Abstract:Astrometric detection and mass determination of Earth-mass exoplanets require sub-μas accuracy, which is theoretically possible with an imaging space telescope using field stars as an astrometric reference. The measurement must, however, overcome astrometric distortions, which are much larger than the photon noise limit. To address this issue, we propose to generate faint stellar diffraction spikes using a two-dimensional grid of regularly spaced small dark spots added to the surface of the primary mirror (PM). Accurate astrometric motion of the host star is obtained by comparing the position of the spikes to the background field stars. The spikes do not contribute to scattered light in the central part of the field and therefore allow unperturbed coronagraphic observation of the star's immediate surroundings. Because the diffraction spikes are created on the PM and imaged on the same focal plane detector as the background stars, astrometric distortions affect equally the diffraction spikes and the background stars and are therefore calibrated. We describe the technique, detail how the data collected by the wide-field camera are used to derive astrometric motion, and identify the main sources of astrometric error using numerical simulations and analytical derivations. We find that the 1.4 m diameter telescope, 0.3 deg2 field we adopt as a baseline design achieves 0.2 μas single measurement astrometric accuracy. The diffractive pupil concept thus enables sub-μas astrometry without relying on the accurate pointing, external metrology, or high-stability hardware required with previously proposed high-precision astrometry concepts.

Optimizing the Efficiency of Fabry-Perot Interferometers with Silicon-Substrate Mirrors

Abstract:We present the novel design of microfabricated, silicon-substrate based mirrors for use in cryogenic Fabry-Perot Interferometers (FPIs) for the mid-IR to sub-mm/mm wavelength regime. One side of the silicon substrate will have a double-layer metamaterial anti-reflection coating (ARC) anisotropically etched into it and the other side will be metalized with a reflective mesh pattern. The double-layer ARC ensures a reflectance of less than 1% at the surface substrate over the FPI bandwidth. This low reflectance is required to achieve broadband capability and to mitigate contaminating resonances from the silicon surface. Two silicon substrates with their metalized surfaces facing each other and held parallel with an adjustable separation will compose the FPI. To create an FPI with nearly uniform finesse over the FPI bandwidth, we use a combination of inductive and capacitive gold meshes evaporated onto the silicon substrate. We also consider the use of niobium as a superconducting reflective mesh for long wavelengths to eliminate ohmic losses at each reflection in the resonating cavity of the FPI and thereby increase overall transmission. We develop these silicon-substrate based FPIs for use in ground (e.g. CCAT-prime), air (e.g. HIRMES), and future space-based telescopes (e.g. the Origins Space Telescope concept). Such FPIs are well suited for spectroscopic imaging with the upcoming large IR/sub-mm/mm TES bolometer detector arrays. Here we present the fabrication and performance of multi-layer, plasma-etched, silicon metamaterial ARC, as well as models of the mirrors and FPIs.

Abstract:A partly cryogenic Fabry-Perot interferometer with a spectral resolution of 10(5) for the 10-microm atmospheric window is described. It consists of a series of two etalons with ZnSe plates, one of which is cooled, and a cooled grating spectrometer with a Si:As detector. The logic of its design is discussed, and details are given of the parts which are special for the ir wavelength region. Preliminary data on the performance indicate that the instrument meets the specifications.

Abstract:Recent advances in far-infrared detector technology have led to increases in raw sensitivity of more than an order of magnitude over previous state-of-the-art detectors. With such sensitivity, photon noise becomes the dominant noise component, even when using cryogenically cooled optics, unless a method of restricting the spectral bandpass is employed. The leading instrument concept features reflecting diffraction gratings which post-disperse the light that has been modulated by a polarizing Fourier transform spectrometer (FTS) onto a detector array, thereby reducing the photon noise on each detector. This paper discusses the development of a cryogenic (4 K) diffraction grating spectrometer which operates over the wavelength range from 285 - 500 $\mu$m and was used to post-disperse the output from a room-temperature polarizing FTS. Measurements of the grating spectral response and diffraction efficiency are presented as a function of both wavelength and polarization to characterize the instrumental performance.

Abstract:The scanning Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) - is the oldest method of optical 3D spectroscopy. It is still in use because of the high spectral resolution it provides over a large field of view. The history of the application of this method for the study of extended ob jects (nebulae and galaxies) and the technique of data reduction and analysis are discussed. The paper focuses on the performing observations with the scanning FPI on the 6-m telescope of the Special Astrophysical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences (SAO RAS). The instrument is currently used as a part of the SCORPIO-2 multimode focal reducer. The results of studies of various galactic and extragalactic objects with the scanning FPI on the 6-m telescope - star-forming regions and young stellar objects, spiral, ring, dwarf and interacting galaxies, ionization cones of active galactic nuclei, galactic winds, etc. are briefly discussed. Further prospects for research with the scanning FPI of the SAO RAS are discussed.

Abstract:A space-based far-infrared interferometer could work synergistically with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) and the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) to revolutionize our understanding of the astrophysical processes leading to the formation of habitable planets and the co-evolution of galaxies and their central supermassive black holes. Key to these advances are measurements of water in its frozen and gaseous states, observations of astronomical objects in the spectral range where most of their light is emitted, and access to critical diagnostic spectral lines, all of which point to the need for a far-infrared observatory in space. The objects of interest - circumstellar disks and distant galaxies - typically appear in the sky at sub-arcsecond scales, which rendered all but a few of them unresolvable with the successful and now-defunct 3.5-m Herschel Space Observatory, the largest far-infrared telescope flown to date. A far-infrared interferometer with maximum baseline length in the tens of meters would match the angular resolution of JWST at 10x longer wavelengths and observe water ice and water-vapor emission, which ALMA can barely do through the Earth's atmosphere. Such a facility was conceived and studied two decades ago. Here we revisit the science case for a space-based far-infrared interferometer in the era of JWST and ALMA and summarize the measurement capabilities that will enable the interferometer to achieve a set of compelling scientific objectives. Common to all the science themes we consider is a need for sub-arcsecond image resolution.

Abstract:The activities of L-ornithine decarboxylase (EC 4.1.1.17) and S-adenosyl-L-methionine decarboxylase (EC 4.1.50) fluctuate markedly in rat ovary during the normal oestrous cycle. Ovarian ornithine and adenosylmethionine decarboxylases also showed profound changes during pregnancy of the rat. Both enzyme activities were remarkably low in the ovary through the first 11 days of pregnancy, but sharply increased at the time the placenta is formed in the rat. The enzyme activities remained elevated almost until term. It appears that the stimulated of polyamine synthesis in rat ovary, as reflected by the enhanced decarboxylation of ornithine and adenosylmethionine, is associated with the growth of the ovarian tissue rather than the secretory function of the corpus luteum during pregnancy.

Abstract:Traditional technologies for far-infrared (FIR) spectroscopy generally involve bulky dispersive optics. Integrated filter bank spectrometers promise more compact designs, but implementations using superconducting transmission line networks become lossy at terahertz frequencies. We describe a novel on-chip spectrometer architecture designed to extend this range. A filter bank spectrometer is implemented using vacuum waveguide etched into a silicon wafer stack. A single trunk line feeds an array of resonant cavities, each coupled to a kinetic inductance detector fabricated on an adjacent wafer. We discuss the design and fabrication of a prototype implementation, initial test results at ambient temperature, and prospects for future development.

Abstract:As millimeter-wave cosmology experiments refine their optical chains, precisely characterizing their optical materials under cryogenic conditions becomes increasingly important. For instance, as the aperture sizes and bandwidths of millimeter-wave receivers increase, the design of antireflection coatings becomes progressively more constrained by an accurate measure of material optical properties in order to achieve forecasted performance. Likewise, understanding dielectric and scattering losses is relevant to photon noise modeling in presently-deploying receivers such as BICEP Array and especially to future experiments such as CMB-S4. Additionally, the design of refractive elements such as lenses necessitates an accurate measure of the refractive index. High quality factor Fabry-Pérot open resonant cavities provide an elegant means for measuring these optical properties. Employing a hemispherical resonator that is compatible with a quick-turnaround 4 Kelvin cryostat, we can measure the dielectric and scattering losses of low-loss materials at both ambient and cryogenic temperatures. We review the design, characterization, and metrological applications of quasioptical cavities commissioned for measuring the dielectric materials in the BICEP3 (95 GHz) and BICEP Array mid-frequency (150 GHz) optics. We also discuss the efforts to improve the finesse of said cavities, for better resolution of degenerate higher order modes, which can provide stronger constraints on cavity parameters and sample material thickness.

Abstract:We present a cryogenic configurable slit unit (CSU) for a multi object infrared spectrograph with an effective field of view of 9.1 arcmin x 9.1 arcmin that was completely conceived and designed in the laboratory at TIFR. Several components of the CSU including the controller for the commercially procured piezo-walkers, controlled loop position sensing mechanism using digital slide callipers and a cryogenic test facility for the assembled prototype were also developed in-house. The principle of the CSU involves division of the field of view of the spectrometer into contiguous and parallel spatial bands, each one associated with two opposite sliding metal bars that can be positioned to create a slit needed to make spectroscopic observations of one astronomical object. A three-slit prototype of the newly designed CSU was built and tested extensively at ambient and cryogenic temperatures. The performance of the CSU was found to be as per specifications.

Abstract:The Planet Formation Imager (PFI) is a future world facility that will image the process of planetary formation. It will have an angular resolution and sensitivity sufficient to resolve sub-Hill sphere structures around newly formed giant planets orbiting solar-type stars in nearby star formation regions. We present one concept for this design consisting of twenty-seven or more 4m telescopes with kilometric baselines feeding a mid-infrared spectrograph where starlight is mixed with a frequency-comb laser. Fringe tracking will be undertaken in H-band using a fiber-fed direct detection interferometer, meaning that all beam transport is done by communications band fibers. Although heterodyne interferometry typically has lower signal-to-noise than direct detection interferometry, it has an advantage for imaging fields of view with many resolution elements, because the signal in direct detection has to be split many ways while the signal in heterodyne interferometry can be amplified prior to combining every baseline pair. We compare the performance and cost envelope of this design to a comparable direct-detection design.

Abstract:Direct imaging instruments have the spatial resolution to resolve exoplanets from their host star. This enables direct characterization of the exoplanets atmosphere, but most direct imaging instruments do not have spectrographs with high enough resolving power for detailed atmospheric characterization. We investigate the use of a single-mode diffraction-limited integral-field unit that is compact and easy to integrate into current and future direct imaging instruments for exoplanet characterization. This achieved by making use of recent progress in photonic manufacturing to create a single-mode fiber-fed image reformatter. The fiber-link is created with 3D printed lenses on top of a single-mode multi-core fiber that feeds an ultrafast laser inscribed photonic chip that reformats the fiber into a pseudo-slit. We then couple it to a first-order spectrograph with a triple stacked volume phase holographic grating for a high efficiency over a large bandwidth. The prototype system has had a successful first-light observing run at the 4.2 meter William Herschel Telescope. The measured on-sky resolving power is between 2500 and 3000, depending on the wavelength. With our observations we show that single-mode integral-field spectroscopy is a viable option for current and future exoplanet imaging instruments.

Abstract:We are developing the super broad band interferometer by applying the Fourier Transform Spectrometer(FTS) to aperture synthesis system in mm and sub-mm bands. We have constructed a compact system based on the Martin and Puplett type Fourier Transform spectrometer (MP-FT). We call this equipment Multi-Fourier Transform interferometer (MuFT). The band width of the system can be extended as large as one wants contrary to the severely limited band width of the usual interferometer due to the speed of the AD converter. The direct detectors, e.g. bolometer, SIS video detector, can be used as the focal plane detectors. This type of detectors have a great advantage in FIR band since they are free from the quantum limit of the noise which limits the sensitivity of the heterodyne detectors used in the usual interferometers. Further, the direct detectors are able to make a large format array contrary to the heterodyne detectors for which construction of a large format array is practically difficult. These three characteristics make one be possible to develop high sensitive super broad band FIR interferometer with wide field of view. In the laboratory experiments, we have succeeded in measuring the spectroscopically resolved 2D image of the source in 150GHz-900GHz band. The future application of this technique to the observations from the space could open new interesting possibilities in FIR astronomy.

Apertif - the focal-plane array system for the WSRT

Abstract:We describe a focal plane array (FPA) system, called Apertif, that is being developed for the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope (WSRT). The aim of Apertif is to increase the instantaneous field of view of the WSRT by a factor of 37 and its observing bandwidth to 300 MHz with high spectral resolution. This system will turn the WSRT into an effective survey telescope with scientific applications such as deep imaging surveys of the northern sky of HI and OH emission, of the polarised continuum and efficient searches for pulsars and transients. Such surveys will detect the HI in more than 100,000 galaxies out to z = 0.4, will allow to determine the detailed structure of the magnetic field of the Galaxy, and will discover more than 1,000 pulsars. We present experimental results obtained with a prototype FPA installed in one of the WSRT dishes. These results demonstrate that FPAs do have the performance that is required to make all these surveys possible.

Abstract:The Fresnel Interferometric Imager is a space-based astronomical telescope project yielding milli-arcsecond angular resolution and high contrast images with loose manufacturing constraints. This optical concept involves diffractive focusing and formation flying: a first "primary optics" space module holds a large binary Fresnel array, and a second "focal module" holds optical elements and focal instruments that allow for chromatic dispersion correction. We have designed a reduced-size Fresnel Interferometric Imager prototype and made optical tests in our laboratory in order to validate the concept for future space missions. The primary module of this prototype consists of a square, 8 cm side, 23 m focal length Fresnel array. The focal module is composed of a diaphragmed small telescope used as "field lens," a small cophased diverging Fresnel zone lens that cancels the dispersion, and a detector. An additional module collimates the artificial targets of various shapes, sizes, and dynamic ranges to be imaged. We describe the experimental setup, different designs of the primary Fresnel array, and the cophased Fresnel zone lens that achieves rigorous chromatic correction. We give quantitative measurements of the diffraction limited performances and dynamic range on double sources. The tests have been performed in the visible domain, lambda = 400-700 nm. In addition, we present computer simulations of the prototype optics based on Fresnel propagation that corroborate the optical tests. This numerical tool has been used to simulate the large aperture Fresnel arrays that could be sent to space with diameters of 3 to 30 m, foreseen to operate from Lyman alpha (121 nm) to mid IR (25 microm).

Cryogenic Focus Measurement System for a Wide-Field Infrared Space Telescope

Abstract:We describe a technique for measuring focus errors in a cryogenic, wide-field, near-infrared space telescope. The measurements are made with a collimator looking through a large vacuum window, with a reflective cold filter to reduce background thermal infrared loading on the detectors and optics. The vacuum window and cold filter introduce wavefront error which we characterize using an autocollimating microscope. For the $200\textrm{ mm}$ diameter aperture $f/3$ space telescope, SPHEREx, we achieve a focus position measurement with a $\sim15 \textrm{ }\mu \textrm{m systematic}$ and a $\sim 5\textrm{ }\mu \textrm{m statistical}$ error.

Abstract:The upcoming Extremely Large Telescopes (ELTs) are expected to have the collecting area required to detect potential biosignature gases such as molecular oxygen, $\mathrm{O_2}$, in the atmosphere of terrestrial planets around nearby stars. One of the most promising detection methods is transmission spectroscopy. To maximize our capability to detect $\mathrm{O_2}$ using this method, spectral resolutions $\mathrm{R}\geq 300,000$ are required to fully resolve the absorption lines in an Earth-like exoplanet atmosphere and disentangle the signal from telluric lines. Current high-resolution spectrographs typically achieve a spectral resolution of $\mathrm{R}\sim100,000$. Increasing the resolution in seeing limited observations/instruments requires drastically larger optical components, making these instruments even more expensive and hard to fabricate and assemble. Instead, we demonstrate a new approach to high-resolution spectroscopy. We implemented an ultra-high spectral resolution booster to be coupled in front of a high-resolution spectrograph. The instrument is based on a chained Fabry Perot array which generates a hyperfine spectral profile. We present on-sky telluric observations with a lab demonstrator. Depending on the configuration, this two-arm prototype reaches a resolution of R=250,000-350,000. After carefully modeling the prototype's behavior, we propose a Fabry Perot Interferometer (FPI) design for an eight-arm array configuration aimed at ELTs capable of exceeding R=300,000. The novel FPI resolution booster can be plugged in at the front end of an existing R=100,000 spectrograph to overwrite the spectral profile with a higher resolution for exoplanet atmosphere studies.

Eosinophil infiltration of nasal polyps in patients with nasal polyposis: role in clinical evolution after medical and surgical treatment.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE In patients with severe nasal polyposis resistant to strict medical treatment, surgery is indicated, but no prognostic factors for surgery efficacy have yet been determined. Some authors suggest that eosinophilic infiltration of nasal polyps could indicate a risk of surgical ineffectiveness. METHODS Surgical plus medical treatment was evaluated over a mean follow-up period of 64 months. One hundred and forty-four subjects were separated into two groups: those with eosinophilic infiltration of >50 per cent (n = 73); and those with <or=50 per cent infiltration (n = 71). RESULTS Combined surgery and corticosteroid therapy was effective in the treatment of severe nasal polyposis. No significant difference was found between the two groups in terms of control of nasal obstruction and sense of smell loss. However, a significant difference was found in terms of control of posterior rhinorrhoea (p = 0.01). CONCLUSION Eosinophilic infiltration influences the outcome of nasal polyposis surgery, mainly regarding control of posterior rhinorrhoea. It could be considered as a risk factor for surgery in patients with nasal polyposis.

Abstract:We present a progress report on the design and construction of the Field-Imaging Far-Infrared Line Spectrometer (FIFI LS) for the SOFIA airborne observatory. The design of the instrument is driven by the goal of maximizing observing efficiency, especially for observations of faint, extragalactic objects. Thus, FIFI LS utilizes an integral field technique that uses slicer mirrors to optically re-arrange the two-dimensional field into a single slit for a long slit spectrometer. Effectively, a 5x5 pixel spatial field of view is imaged to a 25x1 pixel slit and dispersed to a 25x16 pixel, two-dimensional detector array, providing diffraction-limited spatial and spectral multiplexing. In this manner, the instrument employs two parallel, medium resolution (R~2000) grating spectrometers for simultaneous observations in two bands: a short wavelength band (42 to 110 micron) and a long wavelength band (110 to 210 micron). Overall, for each of the 25 spatial pixels, the instrument can cover a velocity range of ~1500 km/s around selected far-infrared lines with an estimated sensitivity of 2x10^-15 W Hz^1/2 per pixel.
