Abstract:A commercial AA2618 alloy was treated through melt spinning at rotating speeds of 20 and 40m*s-1. The as-melt spun ribbons were characterized by a combination of optical microscopy (OPM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The microstructural evolution of the ribbons in a continuous heating process was investigated, and the microhardness was also measured under different conditions. It was found that AlxFeNi is prone to precipitate in AA2618 alloy due to the minimal solubility of iron and nickel. Fine AlxFeNi particles appeared along the grain boundaries at the chilling sides of as-melt spun ribbons, and at both the grain boundaries and in the interior of grains at the free sides. On continuous heating AlxFeNi precipitated steadily and uniformly throughout the matrix until melting. The microhardness of as-melt spun ribbons decreased significantly from the chilling surfaces to free surfaces. Precipitation of AlxFeNi lowered the hardness of the alloy.
Characterization of precipitation in Al-Li alloy AA2195 by means of atom probe tomography and transmission electron microscopy

Abstract:The microstructure of the commercial alloy AA2195 was investigated on the nano-scale after conducting a T8 tempering. This particular thermo-mechanical treatment of the specimen resulted in the formation of platelet-shaped $T_{1}$ ($Al_{2}CuLi$)/ $\theta^{'}$($Al_{2}Cu$) within the Al-matrix. The electrochemically prepared samples were analyzed by scanning transmission electron microscopy and atom probe tomography for chemical mapping. The $\theta^{'}$ platelets, which are less than 2 nm thick, have the stoichiometric composition consistent with the expected ($Al_{2}Cu$) equilibrium composition. Additionally, the Li distribution inside the $\theta^{'}$ platelets was found to equal the same value as in the matrix. The equally thin $T_{1}$ platelet deviates from the formula ($Al_{2}Li Cu$) in its stoichiometry and shows Mg enrichment inside the platelet without any indication of a higher segregation level at the precipitate/matrix interface. The deviation from the ($Al_{2}Li Cu$) stoichiometry cannot be simply interpreted as a consequence of artifacts when measuring the Cu and Li concentrations inside the $T_{1}$ platelet. The results show rather a strong hint for a true lower Li and Cu contents and hence, supporting reasonably the hypothesis that the real chemical composition for the thin $T_{1}$ platelet in the T8 tempering condition differs from the equilibrium composition of the thermodynamic stable bulk phase.

Mechanical milling and its influence on microstructure and electric conductivity of high mass fraction TiC / Cu composites

Abstract:The TiC-Cu composites with different mass fraction were prepared by powder metallurgy method. The effect of ball milling time and sintering temperature on the morphology, relative density and electrical conductivity of TiC/Cu composites has been investigated. As-milled sintered compacts were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and conductivity measurements. The results demonstrate that under laboratory conditions with the milling time increasing grains are remarkable refined. Mechanical milling can bring about changes of lattice parameters, the grain size first decrease and then increase as milling time increasing. Relative density showed strong dependency on the milling time. The effect of the grain being refined by ball milling is helpless to improve electrical conductivity of composites. For the composites with TiC content<50wt.%, as milling time prolonging the electric conductivity decreases while for the 50%TiC-Cu the conductivity are not be impacted. © (2013) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

Abstract:The effect of Li on microstructures and properties of Al-3.5Cu-1.5Mg alloy was studied by optical microscopy(OM),transmission electron microscopy(TEM),scanning electron microscopy(SEM),Vickers hardness(HV)and electronic tensile test respectively.The results show that the addition of 1% Li(mass fraction) translates the main precipitation phase S′(Al2CuMg) to S′(Al2CuMg) + δ′(Al3Li) in the alloy,which Cu/Mg atom ratio is about 1.Precipitate free zones(PFZs) are narrowed.Elastic modulus increases by 8GPa.The tensile strength is improved by 21MPa.However,the elongation of the alloy decreases from 20.3% to 15.8%.The form of fracture morphology is changed from ductile fracture to ductile/brittle mixed fracture.
On the fabrication of atom probe tomography specimens of Al alloys at room temperature using focused ion beam milling with liquid Ga ion source

Abstract:In this work, a simple rectangular milling technique was demonstrated to prepare needle shape atom probe tomography (APT) specimens from Al alloys by focused-ion-beam (FIB) milling using Ga+ ions at room temperature. Ga has high miscibility in Al owing to which electropolishing technique is preferred over Ga+ ion FIB instruments for the fabrication of APT specimens. Although, site specific sample preparation is not possible by the electropolishing technique. This led to the motivation to demonstrate a new rectangular milling technique using Ga+ FIB instrument that resulted a significant reduction of Ga+ ion impregnation into the specimens. This is attributed to the reduction of milling time (<30 s at 30 kV acceleration voltage) and the use of lower currents (<0.3 nA) compared to the conventional annular milling method. The yield of specimens during field evaporation in APT was also significantly increased from around 8 million ions to more than 86 million ions due to the avoidance of Ga+ ion embrittlement. Therefore, the currently demonstrated rectangular milling technique can be used to prepare APT specimens from Al-alloys and obtained accurate compositions of matrix, phases, and hetero-phase interfaces with Ga < 0.1 at%. RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS: Feasibility of using Ga+ ions for the preparation of needle shaped specimens at room temperature from aluminum alloys. Demonstration of using a rectangular milling technique instead of annular milling technique that led to a significant reduction in impregnation of Ga+ ions into the specimen needles. Due to very low Ga+ ion damage, the yield of the APT data increased by 10-12 times.
Direct Observation of PFIB-Induced Clustering in Precipitation-Strengthened Al Alloys by Atom Probe Tomography

Abstract:The effect of sample preparation on a pre-aged Al–Mg–Si–Cu alloy has been evaluated using atom probe tomography. Three methods of preparation were investigated: electropolishing (control), Ga+ focused ion beam (FIB) milling, and Xe+ plasma FIB (PFIB) milling. Ga+-based FIB preparation was shown to introduce significant amount of Ga contamination throughout the reconstructed sample (≈1.3 at%), while no Xe contamination was detected in the PFIB-prepared sample. Nevertheless, a significantly higher cluster density was observed in the Xe+ PFIB-prepared sample (≈25.0 × 1023 m−3) as compared to the traditionally produced electropolished sample (≈3.2 × 1023 m−3) and the Ga+ FIB sample (≈5.6 × 1023 m−3). Hence, the absence of the ion milling species does not necessarily mean an absence of specimen preparation defects. Specifically, the FIB and PFIB-prepared samples had more Si-rich clusters as compared to electropolished samples, which is indicative of vacancy stabilization via solute clustering.
Metastable state transformations of Al3Ti-base alloys during mechanical milling and subsequent annealing

Abstract:Developing multi-phase alloy is an effective approach for the strengthening and toughening of the L12 Al3Ti alloy. A Nb-modified AljTi-base alloy which has a L12 matrix and the precipitated second phase has been developed. Since the effect of second phase is strongly influenced by its size and distribution, highenergy ball milling was employed to fabricate the alloy in comparison with the conventional casting process. It was found that structure evolution during mechanical milling is different for DQi2, Lia and L12 + DQ22 twophase alloys. The D0b2 AljTi transformed only to a FCC structure even after long time milling. The ordering of L12 AlTiMris decreased quickly and changed into a FCC structure after short time milling, subsequent milling led to the amorphous transition. The DChi phase in AlsTi-Mn-Nb alloys dissolved into the L12 matrix quickly in the early stage of milling and the matrix changed into a FCC supersaturated solid solution after 10 h milling, further milling led to the amorphous transition. Reordering of the metastable structures occurred during the annealing process. The consolidated materials consisting of fine equiaxed grains with dispersed particles exhibited remarkable improvement of strength and promising ductility.

Abstract:This work describes the micro-and nanostructures of inert gas atomized Al-Cu alloy powder particles over a range of compositions. For cold spray deposition, the microstructure and elemental distribution within the feedstock powder play a critical role in determining the final microstructure and properties of the fabricated material. A series of Al-Cu binary alloy powders, ranging from 2 to 5 wt% Cu, were produced by inert gas atomization and were then thoroughly characterized using electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The gas atomized powder particles, nominally 20 nn in diameter, presented a cellular structure with theta (Al2Cu) phase forming along the cell boundaries. The continuity and phase fraction of the theta phase increased systematically with copper content. No Guinier-Preston zones were observed in the powders, but small, incoherent theta phase particles were observed in the matrix near the cell boundaries. The as-atomized particles were observed to be in a non equilibrium state with a reduced amount of theta phase and altered lattice parameters for the alpha and theta phases. A mild, post-atomization annealing returned the theta phase fraction and lattice parameters to their equilibrium values.

Abstract:A combination of high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM) imaging and three-dimensional atom probe analyses (3DAP) technologies was employed to accurately characterize the composite precipitate structure. Two types of the composite precipitate structure, i.e. δ′/T1 and δ′/T1/δ′ (T1-Al2CuLi and δ′-Al3Li), were observed. 3DAP analysis further confirmed the existence of this structure and solutes distribution was precise determined by concentration profiles. We also found that the coarsening of T1 was achieved by the nucleation of precursor on one side of matured T1 precipitate uncovered by δ′ precipitate and the coarsening of the inward T1 precipitate within the composite structure may would be depressed by the sideward δ′ precipitate.

Abstract:Among the many considerable challenges faced in developing a rational basis for advanced alloy design, establishing accurate atomistic models is one of the most fundamental. Here we demonstrate how advanced imaging techniques in a double-aberration-corrected transmission electron microscope, combined with ab initio modeling, have been used to determine the atomic structure of embedded 1 nm thick T1 precipitates in precipitation-hardened Al–Li–Cu aerospace alloys. The results provide an accurate determination of the controversial T1 structure, and demonstrate how next-generation techniques permit the characterization of embedded nanostructures in alloys and other nanostructured materials.

Abstract:Understanding surface modification of materials by Ga-ion milling has attracted growing research interests. This research reports that ion beam milling can induce rapid formation of θ-phase on the surface of a precipitation-hardening Al-Cu alloy. Atom probe tomography analysis reveals that an Al-Cu alloy tip develops a surface Cu-rich layer after electro-polishing. Cu-rich solute clusters in the 1-week naturally aged alloy sample are effective to assist the nucleation for rapid formation of surface θ-phase under the ion milling. The growth of the surface θ-phase is via a combination reaction of the surface Cu-rich layer with the Al matrix, rather than a simple decomposition of the Al-Cu alloy under the Ga ion irradiation. Partition and segregation behaviours of Ga with respect to the surface θ-phase are addressed by this investigation.

Abstract:The continuous miniaturization of modern electromechanical systems calls for a comprehensive understanding of the mechanical properties of metallic materials specific to micrometer and sub-micrometer scales. At these scales, the nature of dislocation-mediated plasticity changes radically: sub-micrometer metallic samples exhibit high yield strengths, however accompanied by detrimental intermittent strain fluctuations compromising forming processes and endangering structural stability. In this paper, we studied the effects of plate-like $\theta^\prime$-Al$_2$Cu precipitates on the strength, plastic fluctuations and deformation mechanisms of Al-Cu alloys from micro-pillar compression testing. The plate-like precipitates have diameters commensurate with the external size of the Al-Cu micro-pillars. Our results show that these plate-like precipitates can strengthen the materials and suppress plastic fluctuations efficiently at large sample sizes ($\geq 3 \mu m$). However, the breakdown of the mean-field pinning landscape at smaller scales weakens its taming effect on intermittency. Over an intermediate range of sample sizes allowing the precipitates to cross the entire pillar, an enhanced apparent strain hardening and a sharp decrease of jerkiness are observed, in association with the presence of {100}-slip traces along the coherent $\theta^\prime$-Al$_2$Cu precipitate/$\alpha$-Al matrix interface and precipitate shearing. These complex effects of plate-like precipitates on plasticity are analyzed, experimentally and theoretically, in view of the interferences between external and internal sizes, and the related modifications of the underlying plastic mechanisms.

High-quality TEM specimen preparation for lithium-ion conducting solid electrolytes by low-energy ion milling

Abstract:Focused ion beam (FIB) is a widely used method to prepare transmission electron microscopy (TEM) specimen from bulk materials. However, the surface amorphous layer induced by ion beam is an obstacle to obtain high-quality atomic-scale images for quantitative analysis, especially for the analysis of light elements such as lithium in lithium-ion conducting solid electrolytes. Here, taking lithium-ion conducting solid electrolyte materials as an example, the advantages and disadvantages of applying low-energy Ar+ ion for fine milling after FIB are investigated. Combining Monte-Carlo simulations with ion milling experiments, the milling parameters are evaluated and discussed in detail. With optimized parameters, TEM specimens with less beam damage and thinner amorphous layer were prepared, enabling the acquisition of high-quality atomic-scale images. Furthermore, low-energy Ar+ ion milling is also able to remove hydrocarbon contamination formed during the electron beam illumination inside the microscope, making the contaminated TEM specimens reusable.
The effect of major constituents on microstructure and mechanical properties of cast Al-Li-Cu-Zr alloy

Abstract:The effect of major constituents (the Li content increases from 0.5 to 3 wt% and the Cu content decreases from 4.5 to 2 wt%) on microstructure and mechanical properties of cast Al-Li-Cu-Zr alloy were studied to understand a qualitative assessment of sequence and kinetics of multiple precipitations. Increasing the Li content progressively raises the melting temperature from 520 °C in 1# alloy (Al-0.5Li-4.5Cu, wt%) and 2# alloy (Al-1Li-4.5Cu) to 560 °C in 6# alloy (Al-3Li-2Cu). In addition, the variations of the major constituents result in the changes of the type and volume fraction of the inter- and intra-granular intermetallic phases. TEM results indicate that minor modifications to alloy composition greatly alter precipitation behavior during isothermal aging. The Li-poor alloy (2# alloy) presents a much shorter incubation time of T1-Al2CuLi precipitate than the Li-rich alloy (Al-1.5Li-4.5Cu, 3# alloy), while the nucleation of θ'-Al2Cu precipitate is promoted in Li-rich alloy. No typical spherical δ'-Al3Li precipitate is observed in 2# and 3# alloys during isothermal aging, except for the as-quenched 3# alloy. The preferential nucleation of δ' precipitate on the coherent and broad face of θ' precipitate is observed in 2# and 3# alloys, leading to the formation of "sandwich-like" δ'/θ'/δ' phases. Further decreasing Cu content to 2 wt% and increasing Li content to 3 wt% (6# alloy), the predominant phase in the matrix is δ' precipitate, accompanied by a small amount of unevenly distributed θ' and T1 precipitates. The best balance between ductility and strength is obtained by 2# alloy aged for 32 h, but 6# alloy has significant advantages in terms of density (2.437 g/cm3) and elastic modulus (82.65 GPa) over 2# alloy (density: 2.675 g/cm3; elastic modulus: 75.45 GPa).

An evaluation of Ar ion milling in TEM sample preparation by energy-filtered TEM technique

Abstract:Irradiated materials impose unique challenges when it comes to sample preparation for transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis. After the preparation of TEM samples by electrolytic polish, Ar ion milling was usually used to remove the surface contamination, as well as to thin the samples to desired thickness. Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate the advantages and limitations of Ar ion milling technique. In this work, the optimum milling condition with minimal surface artifacts was determined by Ar ion milling with various incident angles and beam energies, and the high-resolution TEM (HR-TEM) examinations confirmed the optimum condition to be 4.0 keV Ar ions with incident angles of ± 4 ° . In addition, Ar ion milling and subsequent thickness measurement by energy-filtered TEM (EF-TEM) were conducted to determine the thinning rate. It is found that electrolytic polished TEM lamella has a wedge-shape structure with a very sharp edge, and the thinning rates varied from 9.7 ± 1.4 nm / minute to 5.0 ± 2.3 nm / minute across the TEM lamella for 4.0 keV Ar ions. However, the thinning rates for 2 keV and 1 keV Ar ions were under the examination limit, and they were supposed not sufficient to thin the tungsten samples. Even though the exact thinning rate varies for different materials, the general trends for the Ar ion milling observed in this study can be used as a guidance.

Abstract:The effect of second-phase particles on the evolution of the deformation microstructure during cold rolling of the particle-containing aluminum alloy AA3104 has been investigated using electron channeling contrast imaging and electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD). The results show that the influence of second-phase particles on the deformation microstructure depends on the particle size. Fine dispersoids present in the microstructure have no clear effect on the grain orientation dependence of the dislocation structures formed in the strain range examined. However, large scale structural heterogeneities, in the form of deformation zones, are formed near coarse constituent particles, leading to significant local distortions of the deformed microstructure. Analysis of EBSD data shows that significant orientation gradients are found in the vicinity of the coarse particles. Within the deformation zones the largest lattice rotations occur at the tips of plate-shaped constituent particles. A symmetrical pattern of TD-rotations of alternating sign is found in the deformation zones, with the magnitude of the lattice rotations increasing with increasing strain.

Abstract:Nanocrystalline FeCoNi and FeCoNiSi powdered alloys were prepared by mechanical milling process (MA). Using X-ray diffraction patterns, we experimentally proved that when MA reached a time of 50 h, it led to a decrease of the crystallite size down to 20 nm and 32 nm for FeCoNiSi and FeCoNi, respectively. However, the dislocation density increased, reaching the highest value for the alloy associated with silicon. Nevertheless, this high energy ball-milling process is not used only for the refining of microstructure, but also to induce either a chemical reaction between the powdered chemical elements or a phase transformation, such as the allotropic transformation of HCP-Co to FCC-Co and the formation of highly disordered Fe-based solid solutions. Thermal stability of the milled mixtures was investigated by DSC from 25 up to 700 °C at a heating rate of 10 °C/min. Various milled samples were first annealed at specific temperatures and then analyzed using X-ray diffraction, which demonstrated the stability of the evolved phases during subsequent heating and the formation of some metallic oxides, such as Fe3O4 Fe2O3 and FeO, particularly for the elevated annealing temperatures.

Abstract:We report here on the microstructure evolution and the strengthening behaviour of the δꞌ/θꞌ/δꞌ precipitates in the aged Al-Cu-Li-Mg aluminium alloy by atomic high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM) and in-situ TEM compression straining. On the chosen zone axis, atomic HAADF-STEM images reveal the in-situ microstructure evolution of the δꞌ/θꞌ/δꞌ precipitates. A monolayer GP(θꞌ) zone, grown on the (001) Al plane, evolves from the Cu-rich region. After the transformation of the GP(θꞌ) zone to θꞌ phase, the boundaries of the θꞌ phase are coated with the δꞌ phases, forming a matured δꞌ/θꞌ/δꞌ precipitate. Additionally, the growth of δꞌ phases on the two sides of θꞌ is not affected by the inclined boundaries of θꞌ and the hard impingement of the thin T 1 precipitate. During the in-situ TEM compression straining on the peak-aged nanopillar, the deviated slip band structures and the large displacement bursts are presumably associated with the dislocation-precipitate interaction of the T 1 and δꞌ/θꞌ/δꞌ precipitates. Abstract:Sample preparation, essential to any analysis, remains an under-documented step. Preparation methods for transmission electron microscopy (TEM) are complex and lead to artifacts that need to be identified to avoid wrong conclusions about the sample's microstructure. Ion milling techniques are increasingly becoming the reference techniques to prepare thin foils. The possibilities of different ion beam processes for milling samples will be shown and compared, using ceramic carbon/carbide fibers, a material applied in many industrial applications, as a test specimen. This overview of ion milling preparation techniques will enable us to identify the advantages, disadvantages and parameters in order to best prepare these thin samples. It will be carried out for the community, and will also highlight a new preparation method for ceramic fibers to minimize the artefacts inherent in these techniques.

Abstract:The impact of the Cu/Li ratio on the sequence and kinetics of solid-state precipitation is studied for two recently developed Al–Cu–Li–Mg–Ag alloys: AA2198 and AA2196. A quantitative evaluation of the alloy microstructure is carried out using small-angle synchrotron X-ray and neutron scattering, conventional and aberration-corrected (scanning) transmission electron microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. It is shown that small modifications to alloy chemistry profoundly change the phases formed during natural ageing: Cu-rich clusters in the Li-lean alloy and the δ′(Al3Li) phase in the Li-rich alloy. Despite this difference in early ageing, the peak aged microstructures of the two alloys are similar, dominated by high-aspect-ratio T1 plates with a thickness of 1.3nm and a diameter up to 50nm. However, the incubation time for nucleation and saturation size after growth of the precipitates is found to be significantly different between the two alloys. Small amounts of other phases from the binary Al–Cu sequence are also observed. Mechanisms of formation of the T1 phase are discussed in view of these experimental results.
