Abstract:Fe5-xGeTe2 is a van der Waals material with one of the highest reported bulk Curie temperatures, $T_C$ ~ 310K. In this study, theoretical calculations and experiments are utilized to demonstrate that the magnetic ground state is highly sensitive to local atomic arrangements and the interlayer stacking. Cobalt substitution is found to be an effective way to manipulate the magnetic properties while also increasing the ordering temperature. In particular, cobalt substitution up to 30% enhances $T_C$ and changes the magnetic anisotropy, while approximately 50% cobalt substitution yields an antiferromagnetic state. Single crystal x-ray diffraction evidences a structural change upon increasing the cobalt concentration, with a rhombohedral cell observed in the parent material and a primitive cell observed for ~46% cobalt content relative to iron. First principles calculations demonstrate that it is a combination of high cobalt content and the concomitant change to primitive layer stacking that produces antiferromagnetic order. These results illustrate the sensitivity of magnetism in Fe5-xGeTe2 to composition and structure, and emphasize the important role of structural order/disorder and layer stacking in cleavable magnetic materials.

Structural and magnetic properties of Fe-Co-C alloys with tetragonal deformation: a first-principle study

Abstract:Fe-Co alloys with induced tetragonal strain are promising materials for rare-earth-free permanent magnets. However, as ultrathin-film studies have shown, tetragonal Fe-Co structures tend to a rapid relaxation toward a cubic structure as the thickness of the deposited film increases. One of the main methods of inducing the stable strain in the bulk material is interstitial doping with small atoms, like B, C, or N. In this work, we present a full configuration space analysis in density functional theory approach for (Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_{16}$C supercells with a single C impurity in one of the octahedral interstitial positions and for the full range of Co concentrations $x$. We discuss all assumptions and considerations leading to calculated lattice parameters, mixing enthalpies, magnetic moments, and averaged magnetocrystalline anisotropy energies (MAE). We present a comprehensive qualitative analysis of the structural and magnetic properties' dependence on short- and long-range ordering parameters. We analyzed all unique Fe/Co atoms occupancies at all stoichiometric concentrations possible in 2x2x2 supercell based on 2-atom tetragonal representation. We rely on the thermodynamic averaging method and large sample count to obtain accurate MAE values. We reevaluate several chemical disorder approximation methods, including effective medium methods (virtual crystal approximation and coherent potential approximation) and special quasirandom structures method applied to Fe-Co-based alloys. We observe a structural phase transition from the body-centered tetragonal structure above 70% Co concentration and confirm the structural stability of Fe-Co-C alloys in the tetragonal range. We show the presence of a broad MAE maximum of around 50% Co concentration and notably high MAE values for Co content $x$ as low as 25%. In addition, we show a positive correlation between MAE and mixing enthalpy.

Abstract:We explore an opportunity to induce and control tetragonal distortion in materials. The idea involves formation of a binary alloy from parent compounds having body-centered and face-centered symmetries. The concept is illustrated in the case of FeNi$_{1-x}$Co$_x$ magnetic alloy formed by substitutional doping of the L1$_0$ FeNi magnet with Co. Using electronic structure calculations we demonstrate that the tetragonal strain in this system can be controlled by concentration and it reaches maximum for $x=0.5$. This finding is then applied to create a large magnetocrystalline anisotropy (MAE) in FeNi$_{1-x}$Co$_x$ system by considering an interplay of the tetragonal distortion with electronic concentration and chemical anisotropy. In particular, we identify a new ordered FeNi$_{0.5}$Co$_{0.5}$ system with MAE larger by a factor 4.5 from the L1$_0$ FeNi magnet.

Abstract:The effects of partial substitution of Fe by Co on the thermal behaviors, Curie temperature and magnetic properties of Fe83.2-xCoxB10C6Cu0.8 amorphous alloys were investigated. Thermodynamic analysis revealed that Co doping expands the crystallization window of alloys and inactivates the annealing sensitivity of Fe(Co)–B/C compounds, although the first onset crystallization temperature slightly drops. The doping of Co can effectively regulate the Curie temperature and magnetic properties of alloys. The former increases from 327 to 476 °C and the later shows first increase and then decrease, and the maximum value of 1.77 T is achieved with 6 at.% Co doping, which is higher than that of most as-quenched Fe-based amorphous alloys reported so far. The theoretical calculation is consistent well with the experimental result that the magnetic moment per magnetic atom and exchange stiffness constant support the variation of saturation magnetization. Moreover, the coercivity of alloys was investigated by the magnetic domain structure.

Abstract:Soluting rare earth atoms Tb or Dy into body centered cubic (BCC) Fe-Ga through rapid cooling significantly enhances the magnetostriction due to strong localized magnetocrystalline anisotropy. Origin of the local strong anisotropy, however, awaits comprehensive microstructural investigation. In this letter, formation of tetragonal nanoparticles with c/a similar to 0.979 has been found in the giant magnetostrictive ribbons Fe82.89Ga16.88Tb0.23 due to local symmetry breaking of the BCC lattice using high resolution transmission electronic microscopy. First principal calculations suggest that random replacement of Tb atoms for Fe or Ga in the ordered DO3 superlattice is beneficial in the formation of such tetragonal symmetry. Exchange couplings between the nearest Tb-Fe or Tb-Tb pairs of the tetragonal nanoparticles might generate strong localized magnetocrystalline anisotropy, leading to extraordinary magnetostriction enhancement. Abstract:Fe$_{3}$GeTe$_{2}$ is a two-dimensional van der Waals material with a ferromagnetic ground state and a maximum transition temperature $T_{\mathrm{c}}\sim225$ K. However, when Fe$_{3}$GeTe$_{2}$ is synthesized lower values of $T_{\mathrm{c}}$ are often reported. This is attributed to a deficiency in the Fe at the 2c site in the crystal structure. Here we investigate the effect of Fe deficiency and the substitution of Co for Fe on the magnetic properties of this system. We have synthesized both polycrystalline material and single crystals by chemical vapor transport and the flux method, with the largest crystals obtained using the flux method. Cobalt substitution at the Fe site is found to significantly reduce the magnetic transition temperature. Crystals of Fe$_{3}$GeTe$_{2}$ grown by chemical vapor transport with $\sim 8\%$ excess Fe in the starting materials display an optimum Fe content and magnetic transition temperature.

Abstract:We present a study of the dynamic magnetic properties of TiN-buffered epitaxial thin films of the Heusler alloy Fe$_{1.5}$CoGe. Thickness series annealed at different temperatures are prepared and the magnetic damping is measured, a lowest value of $\alpha=2.18\times 10^{-3}$ is obtained. The perpendicular magnetic anisotropy properties in Fe$_{1.5}$CoGe/MgO are also characterized. The evolution of the interfacial perpendicular anisotropy constant $K^{\perp}_{\rm S}$ with the annealing temperature is shown and compared with the widely used CoFeB/MgO interface. A large volume contribution to the perpendicular anisotropy of $(4.3\pm0.5)\times 10^{5}$ $\rm J/m^3$ is also found, in contrast with vanishing bulk contribution in common Co- and Fe-based Heusler alloys.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) magnetism is an incredibly intriguing phenomenon in condensed matter physics. The exploration of 2D magnets holds great promise for various applications, even though they often exhibit low magnetic transition temperature. Among these materials, Fe5GeTe2 has emerged as a compelling candidate for room-temperature spintronics due to its intrinsic ferromagnetism and high Curie temperature. In this study, we investigate the impact of Co substitution at the Fe sites in Fe5GeTe2, which induces a transition of the magnetic ground state to the antiferromagnetic state when the substitution level exceeds 0.36. Additionally, we observe the coexistence of ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic states in the magnetic transition region of (Fe1−xCox)5GeTe2 crystals. Notably, the interaction between the two magnetic phases results in Néel temperature (TN) up to 374 K, establishing a record among known van der Waals antiferromagnets. Our findings present a strategy for enhancing the magnetic temperature of 2D magnets, paving the way for potential advancements in spintronics applications.

Abstract:As a potential candidate for critical chemical element free permanent magnet, (Fe 0.7 Co 0.3 ) 2 B, shows promising intrinsic magnetic properties, including large magnetization, high Curie temperature and moderate magnetocrystalline anisotropy (MCA). Still, the coercivity that has been achieved is relatively low. To understand and improve coercivity, we study the robustness of MCA related to the fluctuation of chemical composition and the structural distortion and its effect on coercivity in (Fe 0.7 Co 0.3 ) 2 B from first principles DFT (density functional theory) calculation and micromagnetic simulation. A fluctuation of cobalt content of 10%, or 1% isotropic lattice strain, or 2% tetragonal distortion reduces MCA energy up to 30%. By considering randomly distributed local MCA energy reduction up to 30%, the calculated coercivity of anisotropic bulk magnets reduced from 3.6 kOe to 2.2 kOe. Rational microstructure design, such as grain size refinement and development of strong crystal texture of MCA easy-axis (i.e., degree of alignment for (Fe 0.7 Co 0.3 ) 2 B grains), can enhance coercivity and mitigate the effect of local MCA reduction. In addition to acceptable intrinsic magnetic properties, the promising hard magnetic phase needs good MCA robustness to facilitate the development of practical magnets.

Abstract:Tuning the magnetic properties of two-dimensional van der Waals ferromagnet has special important for their practical applications. Using first-principles calculations, we investigate the magnetic properties of Co-doped Fe3GaTe2 with different Co concentrations and different Co atomic sites. Calculation results show that Fe or Co atoms with relatively lower atomic concentrations preferentially occupy Fe1 sites with interlayer coupling, which is more energetically favorable. As doping concentration of Co atoms increases, the total magnetic moment of doped system decreases, while the average atomic magnetic moments of Fe1 and Fe2 increase and decrease, respectively, with Fe1 reaching ~2.08 μB. The spin polarization of the doped model 2Co-2 near Fermi energy level is significantly reduced, while 4Co-3 exhibits an enhanced trend. At some doping level, a phase change from ferromagnetism to antiferromagnetism appears in the high Co concentration. These results provide a theoretical basis for experimental studies and valuable information for the development of Fe3GaTe2-based spintronic devices.

Abstract:In this study, we analyze the effect of Fe substitution with Co on the magnetic properties of Fe80P13C7 amorphous alloy using experimental measurements and first-principle molecular dynamic calculations of the distribution functions, Voronoi polyhedra, and density of states of Fe80-xCoxP13C7 (x = 0, 5, 10, 15 at.%) alloys. The experimental results demonstrate that the saturation magnetization (Ms ) of Fe80-xCoxP13C7 (x = 0, 5, 10, 15 at.%) increases and then decreases with increasing Co content, and that maximum Ms is achieved when the composition of Co is 5 at.%. This trend is consistent with the one determined using simulations. Compared to the other amorphous alloys investigated herein, Fe75Co5P13C7 exhibits the highest local symmetry, which explains why it has the largest exchange splitting energy and largest Ms . In addition, increasing substitution of Fe atoms with Co does not appreciably affect the magnetic moment of Co atoms, but it increases the magnetic moment of Fe atoms, particularly those adjacent to Co. This indicates that Co atoms can induce an increase in the magnetic moment of the Fe atoms surrounding them.

Abstract:(Fe,Co)$_2$B-based compounds with specified 5$d$ substitutions are considered as promising materials for permanent magnets without rare-earth elements. We conducted a combined first-principles and experimental study focused on (Fe$_{0.7}$Co$_{0.3}$)$_2$B alloys doped with W and Re. First, we used full-potential local-orbital scheme to systematically investigate (Fe,Co)$_2$B alloys with 3$d$, 4$d$, and 5$d$ substitutions. Computational analyses showed a significant increase in magnetocrystalline anisotropy only for the Re doped sample. Simultaneously, the structural and magnetic properties of the (Fe$_{0.7-x}$Co$_{0.3-x}$M$_{2x}$)$_2$B ($M$ = W, Re; $x$ = 0, 0.025) alloys were investigated experimentally. The desired (Fe,Co)$_2$B tetragonal phase was synthesized by heat treatment of amorphous precursors. We observed that isothermal annealing increases the coercive field of all samples. However, the obtained values, without further optimization, are well below the threshold for permanent magnet applications. Nevertheless, annealing of substituted samples at 750$^o$C significantly improves saturation magnetization values. Furthermore, M\"{o}ssbauer spectroscopy revealed a reduction of the hyperfine field due to the presence of Co atoms in the (Fe,Co)$_2$B phase, where additional defect positions are formed by Re and W. Radio-frequency M\"{o}ssbauer studies showed that (Fe$_{0.7}$Co$_{0.3}$)$_2$B and the W-substituted sample began to crystallize when exposed to an radio frequency field of 12 Oe, indicating that the amorphous phase is stabilized by Re substitution. Improvement of thermal stability of (Fe$_{0.675}$Co$_{0.275}$Re$_{0.05}$)$_2$B alloy is consistent with the results of differential scanning calorimetry and thermomagnetic measurements.
Tunable dimensional crossover and magnetocrystalline anisotropy in Fe$_2$P-based alloys

Abstract:Electronic structure calculations are used to examine the magnetic properties of Fe$_2$P-based alloys and the mechanisms through which the Curie temperature and magnetocrystalline anisotropy can be optimized for specific applications. It is found that at elevated temperatures the magnetic interaction in pure Fe$_2$P develops a pronounced two-dimensional character due to the suppression of the magnetization in one of the sublattices, but the interlayer coupling is very sensitive to band filling and structural distortions. This feature suggests a natural explanation of the observed sharp enhancement of the Curie temperature by alloying with multiple elements, such as Co, Ni, Si, and B. The magnetocrystalline anisotropy is also tunable by electron doping, reaching a maximum near the electron count of pure Fe$_2$P. These findings enable the optimization of the alloy content, suggesting co-alloying of Fe$_2$P with Co (or Ni) and Si as a strategy for maximizing the magnetocrystalline anisotropy at and above room temperature.

Abstract:CoV2O6, a Brannerite-type material, exists in both monoclinic (α) and triclinic (γ) forms. α- CoV2O6 exhibits quasi-1D ferromagnetic chains of octahedrally-coordinated Co2+ions in the higher spin state. Fe2+ doped α-CoV2O6 (3 mol%) single crystals were synthesized using high temperature melt method. The motivation is to investigate whether disruption of 1D Co2+ ferromagnetic chains by small Fe3+ substitution alters the antiferromagnetic ground state and lead to stronger spin-frustration. In this paper, we report the magnetic and magnetodielectric properties of Fe doped α-CoV2O6 in detail. The strongly anisotropic nature of magnetic and magnetodielectric characteristics were captured well in the data through orientation dependent measurements with H being parallel to a and c axes of the crystal. Relative dielectric permittivity (εr) exhibited sharp peaks coinciding with the plateau edges Hc1 ∼2.2 T and Hc2 ∼4.4 T in the magnetization curves (M-H) for applied H parallel to a-axis. For dielectric measurements under applied H parallel to c-axis, relative dielectric permittivity exhibited sharp peak around Hc2 ∼3.1 T, again coinciding with the M-H behavior. Such closely related magnetic field induced dielectric transitions reflected in both M(H) and εr(H) measurements is a rare phenomenon and representative of strong spin-lattice coupling in this phase.

Abstract:Cr and Mn play intriguing roles in determining the magnetic properties of CoFeNi-based high-entropy alloys (HEA). In this study, we tune the stoichiometric Mn composition to systematically explore the magnetic properties of (CoCrFeNi)1−x Mn x HEAs. We observe a change from ferro-to ferrimagnetism due to the incorporation of Mn atoms into the CoCrFeNi HEA. In addition, we measure an 81% reduction in magnetization with the incorporation of 7.6 (2)% Mn atoms. Such a significant reduction in magnetization cannot be solely explained by the effect of the inversed moments on the Mn atoms. Hence, we propose a mechanism whereby the Mn atoms flip the moments of neighboring atoms, which results in the magnetization reduction observed in the CoFeNi-based HEAs.

Influence of Nb and Mo Substitution on the Structure and Magnetic Properties of a Rapidly Quenched Fe79.4Co5Cu0.6B15 Alloy

Abstract:The importance of amorphous and nanocrystalline Fe-based soft magnetic materials is increasing annually. Thus, characterisation of the chemical compositions, alloying additives, and crystal structures is significant for obtaining the appropriate functional properties. The purpose of this work is to present comparative studies on the influence of Nb (1, 2, 3 at.%) and Mo (1, 2, 3 at.%) in Fe substitution on the thermal stability, crystal structure, and magnetic properties of a rapidly quenched Fe79.4Co5Cu0.6B15 alloy. Additional heat treatments in a vacuum (260-640 °C) were performed for all samples based on the crystallisation kinetics. Substantial improvement in thermal stability was achieved with increasing Nb substitution, while this effect was less noticeable for Mo-containing alloys. The heat treatment optimisation process showed that the least lossy states (with a minimum value of coercivity below 10 A/m and high saturation induction up to 1.7 T) were the intermediate state of the relaxed amorphous state and the nanocomposite state of nanocrystals immersed in the amorphous matrix obtained by annealing in the temperature range of 340-360 °C for 20 min. Only for the alloy with the highest thermal stability (Nb = 3%), the α-Fe(Co) nanograin grows, without the co-participation of the hard magnetic Fe3B, in a relatively wide range of annealing temperatures up to 460 °C, where the second local minimum in coercivity and core power losses exists. For the remaining annealed alloys, due to lower thermal stability than the Nb = 3% alloy, the Fe3B phase starts to crystallise at lower annealing temperatures, making an essential contribution to magneto-crystalline anisotropy, thus the substantial increase in coercivity and induction saturation. The air-annealing process tested on the studied alloys for optimal annealing conditions has potential use for this type of material. Additionally, optimally annealed Mo-containing alloys are less lossy materials than Nb-containing alloys in a frequency range up to 400 kHz and magnetic induction up to 0.8 T.
Magnetic hardness of hexagonal and orthorhombic Fe$_{3}$C, Co$_{3}$C, (Fe-Co)$_{3}$C, and their alloys with boron, nitrogen, and transition metals: A first-principles study

Abstract:In this study, we considered a large set of materials that are closely related to orthorhombic Fe$_3$C (cementite) with the aim of characterizing trends in their intrinsic magnetic properties and identifying alloys that are optimal for applications. A comprehensive analysis was conducted on the full concentration ranges of hexagonal ($\epsilon$) and orthorhombic ($\theta$) phases of (Fe-Co)$_3$C, (Fe-Co)$_3$(B-C), (Fe-Co)$_3$(C-N), and their alloys with 3$d$, 4$d$ and 5$d$ transition metals. The calculations were performed using the density functional theory implemented in the full-potential local-orbital code (FPLO). Calculated properties included formation energies, Curie temperatures, magnetic moments, magnetocrystalline anisotropy energies (MAE), and magnetic hardnesses. The considered compositions exhibit a range of magnetic properties, including soft, semi-hard, and hard magnetic. The materials most promising for hard-magnetic applications are orthorhombic Co$_3$C compound, together with selected Co-rich orthorhombic (Fe,Co)$_3$C and hexagonal (Fe,Co)$_3$C alloys. The calculation results do not indicate that substituting with transition metals increases the potential of the alloys for permanent magnet applications. A significant drawback of alloying orthorhombic $\theta$-Fe$_3$C (cementite) with transition metals is the notable decline in the Curie temperature. We found that a considerable proportion of the orthorhombic Co$_3$(B-C-N) alloys are magnetically hard, of which boron substitution raises the Curie temperature and improves stability. By mapping the dependence of MAE on the concentration of elements covering both the 3$d$ (from Fe to Co) and 2$p$ (from B, through C, to N) positions, we have demonstrated for the first time the near isoelectronic nature of MAE. The latter observation may be particularly useful in designing compositions of new magnetically hard materials.
