Abstract:The development of magnetic materials with large uniaxial magnetic anisotropy (Ku) and high saturation magnetization has attracted much attention in various areas such as high-density magnetic storage, spintronic devices, and permanent magnets. Although FeCo alloys with the body-centred cubic structure exhibit the highest Ms among all transition metal alloys, their low Ku and coercivity (Hc) make them unsuitable for these applications. However, recent first-principles calculations have predicted large Ku for the FeCo films with the body-centred tetragonal structure. In this work, we experimentally investigated the hard magnetic properties and magnetic domain structures of nanopatterned FeCo alloy thin films. As a result, a relatively large value of the perpendicular uniaxial magnetic anisotropy Ku = 2.1 × 106 J·m−3 was obtained, while the Hc of the nanopatterned FeCo layers increased with decreasing dot pattern size. The maximum Hc measured in this study was 4.8 × 105 A·m−1, and the corresponding value of μ0Hc was 0.60 T, where μ0 represented the vacuum permeability.

Abstract:Total energy and electronic structure calculations for γ′-Fe4N and CoFe3N in the anti-perovskite crystal structure have been performed to understand the structural stability and magnetism using plane-wave pseudopotential method. The virtual crystal approximation (VCA) was used to study order/disorder to examine the effect of the substitution of Co for Fe on the structural stability in CoFe3N alloy. The results show that CoFe3N energetically prefers ordered configuration for Co atoms occupying the corner position. Moreover, the substitution of Co for Fe at corner sites does slightly change the lattice constant, whereas it increases bulk modulus and could hardly changes the ductility. To reveal the role of nitrogen in γ′-Fe4N and CoFe3N, the Mulliken charge and bond population are used as a measure of charge transfers and an analysis of the covalency of these systems, respectively. It turns out that the further distant atoms from the N atom have the larger magnetic moment for γ′-Fe4N and CoFe3N, due to the spin-down electrons transfer from the corner atoms to the face-centered atoms.
Maternal hydration status affects renal pelvic-calyceal diameter in pregnancy.

Abstract:Our objective was to evaluate the effect of maternal hydration status on the maternal renal collecting system during the third trimester of pregnancy. Thirty-five patients with uncomplicated singleton pregnancies were studied between 28 and 40 weeks of gestation. Ultrasound of the maternal kidneys was performed at baseline and after oral hydration with 1 L of water. Renal pelvic dilation was defined as a mean pelvic-calyceal diameter of > 10 mm. Results were analyzed with the Student paired T test and the McNemar test for comparing correlated proportions; P < 0.05 was considered significant. Prior to hydration, 19 patients (54%) had renal pelvic dilation: 7 on the right side, 2 on the left side, and 10 bilateral. Sixty minutes after hydration, 33 patients (94%) had renal pelvic dilation: 7 on the right side, 1 on the left side, and 25 bilateral. Renal pelvic dilation peaked 60 to 90 minutes after oral hydration. We concluded that hydration status substantially affects maternal renal imaging studies during the third trimester of pregnancy.
Effects of Nd and Co on thermal stability of nanocomposite Nd2Fe14B/a-Fe magnets

Abstract:To improve the thermal stability of nanocomposite Nd2Fe14B/α-Fe magnets,the effects of Nd and Co atom fraction on thermal stability of nanocomposite two-phase magnets were investigated.Based on the addition of Zr,vibration sample magnetometer(VSM) and XRD analyse were adopted,and magnetic properties and thermal stabilities of NdxFe93-xB6Zr1(x=9,9.5,10,10.5,11) and Nd10Fe83-xB6CoxZr1(x=2,4,6,8) magnets were studied.Results show that the alloy with 10% Nd atom fraction has the highest remanence of 0.932 T,higher coercivity of 780 kA/m and the best thermal stability in NdxFe93-xB6Zr1 alloys,and that temperature coefficient of remanence is-0.154%/℃ and temperature coefficient of coercivity is-0.39%/℃ at 180 ℃.For the Nd10Fe83-xB6CoxZr1 magnets,the absolute value of remanence temperature coefficient decreases with the increasing Co atom fraction.When Co atom fraction is 4%,the alloy has the best thermal stability with remanence temperature coefficient of-0.100%/℃ and coercivity temperature coefficient of-0.40%/℃ at 180 ℃.
Structural and magnetic properties of Fe-Co-C alloys with tetragonal deformation: a first-principle study

Abstract:Fe-Co alloys with induced tetragonal strain are promising materials for rare-earth-free permanent magnets. However, as ultrathin-film studies have shown, tetragonal Fe-Co structures tend to a rapid relaxation toward a cubic structure as the thickness of the deposited film increases. One of the main methods of inducing the stable strain in the bulk material is interstitial doping with small atoms, like B, C, or N. In this work, we present a full configuration space analysis in density functional theory approach for (Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_{16}$C supercells with a single C impurity in one of the octahedral interstitial positions and for the full range of Co concentrations $x$. We discuss all assumptions and considerations leading to calculated lattice parameters, mixing enthalpies, magnetic moments, and averaged magnetocrystalline anisotropy energies (MAE). We present a comprehensive qualitative analysis of the structural and magnetic properties' dependence on short- and long-range ordering parameters. We analyzed all unique Fe/Co atoms occupancies at all stoichiometric concentrations possible in 2x2x2 supercell based on 2-atom tetragonal representation. We rely on the thermodynamic averaging method and large sample count to obtain accurate MAE values. We reevaluate several chemical disorder approximation methods, including effective medium methods (virtual crystal approximation and coherent potential approximation) and special quasirandom structures method applied to Fe-Co-based alloys. We observe a structural phase transition from the body-centered tetragonal structure above 70% Co concentration and confirm the structural stability of Fe-Co-C alloys in the tetragonal range. We show the presence of a broad MAE maximum of around 50% Co concentration and notably high MAE values for Co content $x$ as low as 25%. In addition, we show a positive correlation between MAE and mixing enthalpy.

Abstract:In this report, glass forming ability, structure and soft magnetic properties of melt spun ribbons of (Fe1-xCox) 88-yVyZr7B4Cu1alloys with compositions x0.1y2, x0.1y4 and x0.1y6 & x0.35y2, x0.35y4 and x0.35y6 have been investigated. All alloys were found to be fully amorphous after melt spinning. Annealing of amorphous ribbons of x0.1 series alloys leads to the formation of bcc α-Fe(Co) phase and Fe2Zr phase in the amorphous matrix, while annealing of amorphous ribbons of x0.35 series alloys, leads to the formation of only bcc α-Fe(Co) phase in the amorphous matrix. High precision lattice parameter calculation revealed that V addition influences the phase formation in low Co containing x0.1 alloys. It leads to low volume fraction of bcc α-Fe(Co) phase and promotes Fe2Zr phase. A higher Co content increases the Curie temperature of amorphous phase, while V addition decreases the TC of amorphous phase in both x0.1 and x0.35 series of alloys. Saturation magnetization (Ms) of x0.35 alloys are higher than of x0.1 alloy due to higher Co content and the Ms decreases with increasing V content due to its non-magnetic nature. Coercivity was found to be increased with annealing in x0.35 alloys due to the low volume fraction formation of bcc α-Fe(Co) phase and Fe2Zr phase. The coercivity decreases with increasing V addition in x0.35 alloys as spun ribbons and a lowest coercivity of 0.13 Oe has been obtained in x0.35y6 alloy which is one of the lowest among FeCoZrBCu alloys reported.

Abstract:(Fe0.7Co0.3-xNix)88Zr7B4Cu1 nanocrystalline alloys were developed with the aim of improving the magnetic properties while keeping high Curie temperature (TC). It was revealed that Ni addition inhibited the precipitation of metastable fcc-(Fe,Co,Ni) phase hence increased thermal stability. Although the saturation magnetic flux density (Bs) showed a slight decrease, uniform nanostructure with small grain size and high volume fraction of crystals was formed with increasing Ni addition. As a result, the (Fe0.7Co0.3-xNix)88Zr7B4Cu1 nanocrystalline alloys exhibited excellent magnetic properties with a high Bs of 1.54-1.79 T, low coercivity (Hc) of 17-20 A/m and low core loss of 9.1-11.1 W/kg at 1 T and 400 Hz. The combination of high TC of 747-972 °C, low core loss as well as low material cost promised this FeCoNiZrBCu alloys broad application prospect at high temperature.

Abstract:Well-dispersed uniform CoFe2O4 nanoparticles were synthesized and then some nanoparticles were reduced in a H2/N2 gas mixture followed by oxidation in a pure O2 ambient to prepare CoFe2/oxide composite. The CoFe2O4 nanoparticles exhibited a high Hc value of 15,731Oe and an approximately theoretical Mr/Ms ratio of 0.83 at T=10K as a consequence of the strong surface anisotropy, which have seldom been obtained previously. The CoFe2/oxide composites exhibited the novel phenomena in their temperature derivative curves of the difference between the field cooling (FC) and zero field cooling (ZFC) magnetization, which presented two peaks at a low temperature T1 and at a high temperature T2. The low-temperature region below T1 corresponds to the completely frozen state. In such completely frozen temperature regime, the virgin magnetization curves exhibited an anomalous behavior that the magnetization decreases with increasing the applied field in the high field region due to the enhanced pinning action of disordered moments in oxides on the moments of CoFe2 alloy. These results revealed that the surface anisotropy and dipolar interaction as well as the pinning effect play a crucial rule in the magnetic properties of CoFe2O4 nanoparticles and CoFe2/oxide composite, and further investigations are in process.

Abstract:The effects of partial substitution of Fe by Co on the thermal behaviors, Curie temperature and magnetic properties of Fe83.2-xCoxB10C6Cu0.8 amorphous alloys were investigated. Thermodynamic analysis revealed that Co doping expands the crystallization window of alloys and inactivates the annealing sensitivity of Fe(Co)–B/C compounds, although the first onset crystallization temperature slightly drops. The doping of Co can effectively regulate the Curie temperature and magnetic properties of alloys. The former increases from 327 to 476 °C and the later shows first increase and then decrease, and the maximum value of 1.77 T is achieved with 6 at.% Co doping, which is higher than that of most as-quenched Fe-based amorphous alloys reported so far. The theoretical calculation is consistent well with the experimental result that the magnetic moment per magnetic atom and exchange stiffness constant support the variation of saturation magnetization. Moreover, the coercivity of alloys was investigated by the magnetic domain structure.

Abstract:Large magnetostriction has been discovered in the FeCo binary alloys at the composition of Fe30Co70. In this paper, a series of (Fe30Co70)100-x(NiMn)x cast alloys is developed. The mechanical properties and magnetostriction of these alloys are intimately related to the crystal structure and phase constituent. The (Fe30Co70)100-x(NiMn)x magnetostrictive alloys keep in the body-centered-cubic (bcc) phase region with the addition of NiMn to 5%, where the strength and ductility are intensively improved simultaneously. The enhancement of the mechanical behaviors is attributed to the generation of fine laminate structure after doping. The tensile strength and magnetostriction drop with increasing NiMn content when the face-centered-cubic (fcc) phase appears. In (Fe30Co70)95(NiMn)5 polycrystalline alloy, a magnetostriction of 114× 10−6 coupled with a yield strength of more than 1200 MPa and a tensile elongation of 5% is achieved.

Abstract:We explore an opportunity to induce and control tetragonal distortion in materials. The idea involves formation of a binary alloy from parent compounds having body-centered and face-centered symmetries. The concept is illustrated in the case of FeNi$_{1-x}$Co$_x$ magnetic alloy formed by substitutional doping of the L1$_0$ FeNi magnet with Co. Using electronic structure calculations we demonstrate that the tetragonal strain in this system can be controlled by concentration and it reaches maximum for $x=0.5$. This finding is then applied to create a large magnetocrystalline anisotropy (MAE) in FeNi$_{1-x}$Co$_x$ system by considering an interplay of the tetragonal distortion with electronic concentration and chemical anisotropy. In particular, we identify a new ordered FeNi$_{0.5}$Co$_{0.5}$ system with MAE larger by a factor 4.5 from the L1$_0$ FeNi magnet.

Abstract:As a potential candidate for critical chemical element free permanent magnet, (Fe 0.7 Co 0.3 ) 2 B, shows promising intrinsic magnetic properties, including large magnetization, high Curie temperature and moderate magnetocrystalline anisotropy (MCA). Still, the coercivity that has been achieved is relatively low. To understand and improve coercivity, we study the robustness of MCA related to the fluctuation of chemical composition and the structural distortion and its effect on coercivity in (Fe 0.7 Co 0.3 ) 2 B from first principles DFT (density functional theory) calculation and micromagnetic simulation. A fluctuation of cobalt content of 10%, or 1% isotropic lattice strain, or 2% tetragonal distortion reduces MCA energy up to 30%. By considering randomly distributed local MCA energy reduction up to 30%, the calculated coercivity of anisotropic bulk magnets reduced from 3.6 kOe to 2.2 kOe. Rational microstructure design, such as grain size refinement and development of strong crystal texture of MCA easy-axis (i.e., degree of alignment for (Fe 0.7 Co 0.3 ) 2 B grains), can enhance coercivity and mitigate the effect of local MCA reduction. In addition to acceptable intrinsic magnetic properties, the promising hard magnetic phase needs good MCA robustness to facilitate the development of practical magnets.

Abstract:Thin film libraries of Fe-Co-V were fabricated by combinatorial sputtering to study magnetic and structural properties over wide ranges of composition and thickness by high-throughput methods: synchrotron X-ray diffraction, magnetometry, composition, and thickness were measured across the Fe-Co-V libraries. In-plane magnetic hysteresis loops were shown to have a coercive field of 23.9 kA m-1 (300 G) and magnetization of 1000 kA m-1. The out-of-plane direction revealed enhanced coercive fields of 207 kA m-1 (2.6 kG) which was attributed to the shape anisotropy of column grains observed with electron microscopy. Angular dependence of the switching field showed that the magnetization reversal mechanism is governed by 180° domain wall pinning. In the thickness-dependent combinatorial study, co-sputtered composition spreads had a thickness ranging from 50 to 500 nm and (Fe70Co30)100-xVx compositions of x = 2-80. Comparison of high-throughput magneto-optical Kerr effect and traditional vibrating sample magnetometer measurements show agreement of trends in coercive fields across large composition and thickness regions.
High Strength and Low Coercivity of Cobalt with Three-Dimensional Nanoscale Stacking Faults

Abstract:Lower coercivity (HC) and magnetic anisotropy (K1) coupled with high mechanical strength are essential properties for Co-based soft magnetic thin films; however, the strength-coercivity trade-off limits their development. Co with face centered cubic structure (fcc) exhibits lower HC and K1 than its grand hexagonal close packed structure (hcp); however, metastable fcc-phase Co is hard to stabilize. Here, by using Cu (100) seed layer, we synthesized micron-thick fcc Co films with self-formed three-dimensional nanoscale stacking faults (3D-nSFs) that could achieve high strengths without sacrificing soft magnetic properties. The 3D-nSFs, induced by the Co/Cu interface, could not only stabilize the metastable fcc Co to yield lower HC but also impede dislocation motion to strengthen Co films. More importantly, we successfully tailored the density of 3D-nSFs and confirmed a large variation in magnetic coercivity (by 100%) and indentation hardness (by 25%). Abstract:In order to develop a multi-principal element alloy with outstanding soft magnetic properties and high thermal stability, a Fe 35 Co 35 Mn 30−x Al x (x = 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24) alloy system was designed. The findings demonstrated that the optimal Al/Mn content ratio contributes to the formation of a BCC and B2 dual-phase structure, which leads to a significant increase in the saturation magnetic flux density ( B s ) and a considerable decrease in the coercivity of the alloy. The as-cast Fe 35 Co 35 Mn 15 Al 15 alloy with a co-lattice structure exhibits exceptional soft magnetic properties, with a resistivity of 324 μΩ·cm, a B s of 1.46 T and a H c of 167.2 A/m. Corresponding soft magnetic powder cores (SMPCs) were fabricated and the impact of heat treatment temperature on the properties of the SMPCs was examined. The SMPCs after annealing at 660 °C exhibits high stable permeability ( μ e ) of 48 up to 10 MHz, a low core loss ( P cv ) of 1208 mW/cm 3 (at 1 MHz, 20 mT), and excellent direct current bias performance. In addition, these SMPCs possess excellent high temperature magnetic stability, and the variation of both μ e and P cv at a high frequency (1 MHz) is less than 2 % over a wide temperature range of 25–150 °C.

Abstract:L10-FeCo has attracted attention as a new, rare-metal-free magnetic material due to its large uniaxial magnetic anisotropy. However, the low stability of the L10 phase hampers its practical application. We here intend to prepare FeCo alloy thin films by utilizing the nitrogen surfactant effect. The enhancement of the out-of-plane magnetization of this thin film was observed by stacking cobalt single atomic layer on bilayer iron nitride and subsequent annealing at 470 K. This study provides an insight into the relationship between structural changes and magnetic properties of the FeCo interface on the atomic scale, and paves the way for the development of rare metal-free magnetic materials.

Abstract:The Co2V2O7 is recently reported to exhibit amazing magnetic field-induced magnetization plateaus and ferroelectricity, but its magnetic ground state remains ambiguous due to its structural complexity. Magnetometry measurements, and time-of-flight neutron powder diffraction (NPD) have been employed to study the structural and magnetic properties of Co2V2O7, which consists of two non-equivalent Co sites. Upon cooling below the Neél temperature TN = 6.3 K, we observe magnetic Bragg peaks at 2K in NPD which indicated the formation of long range magnetic order of Co2+ moments. After symmetry analysis and magnetic structure refinement, we demonstrate that Co2V2O7 possesses a complicated non-collinear magnetic ground state with Co moments mainly located in b-c plane and forming a non-collinear spin-chain-like structure along the c-axis. The ab initio calculations demonstrate that the non-collinear magnetic structure is more stable than various ferromagnetic states at low temperature. The non-collinear magnetic structure with canted up-up-down-down spin configuration is considered as the origin of magnetoelectric coupling in Co2V2O7 because the inequivalent exchange striction induced by the spin-exchange interaction between the neighboring spins is the driving force of ferroelectricity. Besides, it is found that the deviation of lattice parameters a and b is opposite below TN, while the lattice parameter c and stay almost constant below TN, evidencing the anisotropic magnetoelastic coupling in Co2V2O7.

Abstract:In this work, the effect of tunable Ti content on the microstructure, magnetic domain structure, and magnetic properties of as-spun and annealed Nd 9.5 Fe 79- x Co 5 Ti x B 6.5 ( x = 0,1,2,3,4) alloys at the quench speed of 18 m/s were investigated. For the as-spun alloy, augmenting the Ti content enhanced the initial crystallization temperature and the stability of the amorphous phase. Simultaneously, the incorporation of Ti led to augmentation in the quantity of nanocrystals within the amorphous matrix, thereby facilitating the formation of vortex-like magnetic domains with large size but reduced the saturation magnetization M s . For the annealed alloy, the incorporation of Ti inhibited the precipitation of α-Fe phase, refined the grain, enhanced the exchange coupling between the soft and hard magnetic phase and facilitated the formation of smaller, more uniform vortex-like magnetic domains, These alterations were beneficial to improve the comprehensive magnetic properties. Furthermore, the addition of tunable Ti resulted in a remarkable impact on coercivity enhancement. The coercivity value exhibited a significant increase of 54.30%, surging from 374.24 kA/m to 577.51 kA/m. Upon a thorough analysis of the magnetic domains and coercive force mechanisms, it was ascertained that the introduction of Ti substantially augmented the creation of vortex-like domains. These domains effectively impede domain motion, consequently elevating the material's coercivity.
