Abstract:Carbon fiber reinforced aluminum matrix (C f /Al) composites have long been regarded as lightweight materials for both industrial and commercial uses, and they are anticipated to take the place of traditional Al alloys in industrial manufacturing. In the current study, a continuous Cu coating was applied to the C f using an ultrasonic vibration-assisted plating technique in order to improve wettability between C f and Al matrix. Analysis was done on the impact of plating time on coating micromorphology and thickness. It investigated how the thickness of the Cu coating affected the microstructure and mechanical properties of C f /Al composites. The results show that the C f was coated with a consistent and smooth Cu coating using the current technique. The time required for electroplating was linearly linked to the thickness of the Cu coating. The Cu coating significantly promoted the infiltration of the Al melt into C f bundles between C f and Al melt. When Cu coating thickness was 1.5 μm, the mechanical properties of C f /Al composites were relatively improved with a tensile strength of 169 MPa, an elastic modulus of 80 GPa, and an elongation of 4.2%.
