Abstract:Cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) is an anion channel, mutations of which cause cystic fibrosis, a disease characterized by defective Cl− and HCO3− transport. Although >95% of all CF male patients are infertile because of congenital bilateral absence of the vas deferens (CBAVD), the question whether CFTR mutations are involved in other forms of male infertility is under intense debates. Here we report that CFTR is detected in both human and mouse sperm. CFTR inhibitor or antibody significantly reduces the sperm capacitation, and the associated HCO3−-dependent events, including increases in intracellular pH, cAMP production and membrane hyperpolarization. The fertilizing capacity of the sperm obtained from heterozygous CFTR mutant mice is also significantly lower compared with that of the wild-type. These results suggest that CFTR in sperm may be involved in the transport of HCO3− important for sperm capacitation and that CFTR mutations with impaired CFTR function may lead to reduced sperm fertilizing capacity and male infertility other than CBAVD.

Abstract:Engineered fluid HFE-7100 is an outstanding detergent and coolant with excellent thermal and chemical stability. Electrohydrodynamic jet disintegration and subsequent droplet formation of HFE-7100 dielectric liquid mixed with ethanol were experimentally investigated in this study. Contact-type charging was employed with the capillary nozzle directly connected to a negative high-voltage power supply, while the counter electrode was grounded. High-speed photography was utilized to capture the liquid breakup and droplet formation behaviors. The results showed that an ethanol content of 8% by volume visibly improved the charging performance of HFE-7100 due to the increase in the liquid electrical conductivity. In addition, with the increase in the applied voltage, the jet breakup was found to transform from the dripping/jetting mode to the ramified mode, which is characterized by a steady liquid sheet with fine droplets forming at the edge. Two distinct ramified breakup configurations, called the pudgy-ramified and lanky-ramified modes, are proposed, and their detailed structural parameters and droplet size distributions are discussed. The diameters of the droplets produced under the permanent ramified configuration could be as small as a few micrometers. Finally, a jet breakup regime map based on the Reynolds number Re and electric bond number BoE was established. Overall, the electrospray technique has shown promise for spray cooling enhancement, and the main results of this paper may be useful for the development of electrospray cooling with a dielectric coolant.

Abstract:Dielectrophoresis (DEP), widely used to generate body forces on suspended particles, is investigated to provide surface forces at the liquid-medium interfaces and pump a high-permittivity liquid in a low-permittivity medium along a virtual microchannel defined by an electric field between parallel plates. Because the pumping pressure is proportional to the square of the intensity of the electric field and independent of the channel width, DEP pumping is advantageous as the dimension of the microchannel shrinks down. The absence of the channel walls simplifies the fabrication processes and further increases its feasibility in nanofluidic applications. We demonstrate water pumping in an immiscible silicone oil medium at adjustable velocities by applying voltages above the threshold value whose square is linearly proportional to the cross-sectional aspect ratio (AR), i.e., the height to width ratio, of the microchannel. With a properly designed AR, liquid valve is achieved by appropriate voltage applications. Without the barriers of channel walls, merging multiple streams and capillary filling of the spacing between electric-field-defined virtual microchannels are observed and studied. Moreover, in situ reconfigurable liquid pumping is demonstrated by a four way switching valve on a programmable crossing electrode set.

Abstract:This article explores ways to further improve the performance of an electrohydrodynamic (EHD) gas pump operating in a square channel. To this end, the present pump uses electrode assemblies that are grouped in two and are mounted on the two opposite walls facing each other. The emitting electrodes are flush mounted on the channel walls so that the air flow produced is similar to that of a wall jet. The electrode configuration with three emitting electrodes on each wall is investigated for its effectiveness in enhancing the volume flow rate as well as reducing the power requirement. The results obtained are compared with those reported in the previous studies with various electrode configurations to determine which performs the best. Through the performance assessment of various pump designs, the present results have provided important information for practical applications of EHD technology.

Abstract:The conventional electrohydrodynamic (EHD) pump is limited to pumping functional and dielectric liquids, which restricts its applications in fields like microfluidics, food safety, and materials production. In this study, we present a flexible water pump driven by EHD fluid, achieved by integrating valveless elements into the fluidic channel. Our approach leverages the water–EHD interface to propel the immiscible aqueous liquid and reciprocate this process using the nozzle–diffuser system. All components of the water pump are digitally fabricated and assembled. The valveless parts are created using a laser cutting machine. Additionally, we develop a model for the EHD pump and nozzle–diffuser system to predict the generated flow rate, considering factors such as the asymmetrical performance of the EHD pump, pulse frequency, applied voltage, and structural parameters. Finally, we experimentally characterize the flow rates of both the EHD pump and water pump and apply the newly developed device to air bubble manipulation and droplet generation. This research broadens the range of specialized liquids pumped by EHD pumps to include other aqueous liquids or mixtures.

Abstract:A commercially available, polybenzimidazole (PBI) membrane based electrochemical hydrogen pump (EHP) platform was thoroughly evaluated to generate a benchmark set of performance. A primary gas mixture of CO 2 and H 2 with a ratio of 4:1 was selected to demonstrate the performance of EHP s while addressing concerns of CO 2 poisoning effect. There is no indication of significant CO poisoning as a result of reverse water gas shift reaction (RWGS), and nearly Faradaic current efficiencies were successfully achieved. It was found that humidification of the feed gas at room temperature improved polarization performance while also improving energy efficiency, thus reducing the need for tightly controlled relative humidity of feed gas. A new perspective on EHP energy efficiency calculation methodology is also provided by inclusion of the cell heating requirement into the calculation. In this manner, an overall improvement to energy efficiency nearing 20% was realized by dropping the cell temperature to 120°C while paying no significant penalty to electrochemical performance. Nearly 99.99% pure H 2 and 99.93% pure CO 2 were produced with a hydrogen yield of 99.34%.

Abstract:Redox-magnetohydrodynamics (R-MHD) microfluidics precisely manipulates fluid flow through strategic placement/activation of electrodes and magnetic fields. This paper evaluates various conditions of potentiodynamic electrodeposition of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) films on chip-based, gold electrodes to attain maximum current and charge density, which correlate directly to R-MHD pumping speed and duration in a single direction, respectively. Electrodeposition of PEDOT was controlled by cyclic voltammetry (CV) (5, 50, and 100 mV/s) in propylene carbonate (PC) solutions of monomer and TBAPF6 or LiClO4 electrolyte. The maximum charge is directly proportional to cycle number and inversely proportional to scan rate (i.e. time spent oxidizing monomer). Thicker and rougher films formed from PC:TBAPF6, compared to PC:LiClO4. CV, chronoamperometry (CA), chronopotentiometry, and impedance spectroscopy assessed the electrochemical performance of films in aqueous electrolytes. The maximum current during CA in a given aqueous electrolyte for PEDOT films was independent of electrodeposition parameters and thickness and increased linearly with ionic strength. A three-stage model describes the oxidative response of thick PEDOT films. R-MHD fluid speeds and pumping durations at 0.37 T in 780-μm-deep phosphate-buffered saline were 50 μm/s and 210 s at 50 μA and 820 μm/s and 9 s at 800 μA, respectively, between parallel-band-electrodes, modified with the thickest films.

Abstract:A novel designed electro-osmotic pump (EOP) with simple structure was assembled using three 20cm×530μm i.d. fused-silica capillaries packed with 20±5nm silica grains for capillary liquid chromatography. It was found that the pump could generate pressures over 20MPa and several μL/min flow rate for most of the liquids being delivered with the applied voltage less than 10kV. By increasing the pressure, decreasing the applied voltage and the electrical current, the thermodynamic efficiency was about 1–4%. A practical application of the EOP in a 20cm×150μm i.d. 3μm C18 fused-silica analytical capillary column demonstrated the applicability of the pump.

Abstract:Dielectrophoresis works on the dipoles through entire dielectric liquid through a non-uniform electric field, reversibly changing the droplet contact angle, and overcoming the contact angle saturation limit of electrowetting to affect the surface wettability as a volume force. However, it is difficult to realize useful three-dimensional tunable optical devices because most of the driving electrodes need to be patterned. This paper proposes a model of double flexible electrodes simulating planar interdigitated pattern electrodes based on the dielectrophoresis. Double flexible electrodes wrapped with an insulation layer and disconnected, arranged at close intervals, and wound along the plane substrate to form a two-dimensional plane line wall. A hydrophobic layer is applied to fill the gap and increase the initial contact angle. Ultimately, the "dropletinterdigitated planar line wall" dielectrophoresis driven-droplet model is formed after the dielectric droplets are deposited on the line wall's surface. Firstly, considering the influence of penetration depth and electrode gap area, Young's equation is theoretically modified to adapt to this model. Then, the potential distribution of this model and the planar interdigitated pattern electrode model is compared and analyzed by finite element algorithm simulation. The field strength distribution of the electrode with different wire diameters and insulating layer thicknesses is analyzed. It can be found that with the increase of the diameter of the electrode wire and the thickness of the insulating layer, the morphology of the model changes from the tip electrode to the planar electrode, the surface field strength attenuates exponentially and the peak value decreases. This shows that the electrode structure in this model is superior to the planar electrode. After that, the contact angle of the model is measured experimentally in the range of[58°, 90°] under a 0-250 Vrms voltage, which is in line with the theoretical expectation. At the same time, no obvious contact angle lag or saturation were observed in the experiment. Finally, the new electrophoretic driving droplet model constructed in this paper transforms the dielectric electrophoretic driving mode from a twodimensional planar electrode to a one-dimensional flexible linear electrode. Because of its flexibility and plasticity, it is convenient to form a three-dimensional cavity and can be applied to more complex device structures.

Abstract:Electrochemical hydrogen pump is expected to play an important role in, e.g., H 2 extraction from natural gas pipelines, by-product hydrogen purification. The influence of typical concomitant CH 4 and CO 2 on electrochemical hydrogen pump is systematically investigated in this study over a wide range of gas content (CH 4 or CO 2 : 10-80 %) and temperature (26-60 °C), with the focus on two main inhibition effects, i.e., concentration polarization and chemical interaction. An Faradaic efficiency of 86–96 %, i.e., below 100 %, is obtained as to the H 2 /CH 4 mixture separation due to concentration polarization effect, which is even lower in case of H 2 /CO 2 , due to additional chemical interactions between CO 2 and Pt anode catalysts. The inhibition of concentration polarization is more significant than that of chemical interactions, and the former can be suppressed by increasing the operating temperature and pressure due to enhance catalytic activity and proton conductivity. As to these two gas mixtures, the energy consumption ranged from 0.2 to 2.0 kWh/m 3 with the increase of applied current from 125 to 1250 mA. The electrochemical pump exhibits limited H 2 purity of 98.6 %–99.7 % due to the existence of nafion membrane defects, which requires to be further improved.

Abstract:One class of modern pulse power generators use deionized water as an energy storage, switching and transmission dielectric. Water is chosen for its high dielectric constant and relatively high resistivity, which allows reasonably sized and efficient low-impedance high-voltage pulse lines where pulse durations are less than 100 µs. Water/ethylene glycol mixtures are being researched, so that rotating machinery, rather than the usual Marx generator, can be used as the primary energy store. The high resistivity and high dielectric constant of these mixtures at low temperature permit low-loss operation on millisecond time scales. Simple design criteria linking load parameters and charging circuit characteristics to the liquid dielectric are developed which show that the dielectric constant, breakdown strength, and relaxation time are the primary properties of interest to the pulse power engineer. On time scales greater than 100 µs, injection of space charge, with density q and mobility µ, affects the charging and discharging circuit characteristics, introduces the time constant of the time of flight for injected charge to migrate between electrodes, and increases the effective ohmic conductivity σ to σ + qµ. A drift-dominated conduction model is used to describe measured space-charge effects. Kerr electrooptic field mapping measurements show strong space-charge effects with significant distortions in the electric field distribution a few hundred microseconds after high voltage is applied. The injected charge magnitude and sign depends on the electrode material. Thus by appropriate choice of electrode material combinations and voltage polarity, it is possible to have uncharged liquid, unipolar-charged negative or positive, or bipolar-charged liquid. An important case is that of bipolar injection, which has allowed up to a 40 percent higher applied voltage without breakdown than with no charge injection, and thus a doubling of stored energy due to the space-charge shielding which lowers the electric field strengths at both electrodes. Although injected space charge increases the stored electric energy over the capacitive space-charge-free energy, (1/2)CV2, more energy is required from a source during charging and the energy delivered to a resistive load is reduced because of internal dissipation in the capacitor as the charge is conducted to the electrodes. However, it appears that this extra dissipation due to injected charge can be made negligibly small and well worth the price if the space charge allows higher voltage operation for long charging time or repetitively operated machines.

Abstract:In this study, we develop a nondimensional physical model to demonstrate fluid flow at the micrometer dimension driven by traveling-wave induction electrohydrodynamics (EHD) through direct numerical simulation. In order to realize an enhancement in the pump flow rate as well as a flexible adjustment of anisotropy of flow behavior generated by induction EHD in microchannels, while not adding the risk of causing dielectric breakdown of working solution and material for insulation, a pair of synchronized traveling-wave voltage signals are imposed on double-sided electrode arrays that are mounted on the top and bottom insulating substrate, respectively. Accordingly, we present a model evidence, that not only the pump performance is improved evidently, but a variety of flow profiles, including the symmetrical and parabolic curve, plug-like shape and even biased flow behavior of quite high anisotropy are produced by the device design of "mix-type", "superimposition-type" and "adjustable-type" proposed herein as well, with the resulting controllable fluid motion being able to greatly facilitate an on-demand transportation mode of on-chip bio-microfluidic samples. Besides, automatic conversion in the direction of pump flow is achievable by switching on and off a second voltage wave. Our results provide utilitarian guidelines for constructing flexible electrokinetic framework useful in controllable transportation of particle and fluid samples in modern microfluidic systems.

A Performance-enhanced Electroosmotic Pump with Track-etched Polycarbonate Membrane by Allylhydridopolycarbosilane Coating

Abstract:Nanochannel plastic membranes are excellent materials for electroosmotic pump (EOP) elements owing to their surface charge properties, flexibility and cost-effectiveness. However, the surface charge properties of plastics are inferior to those of silicate-based materials. This paper reports a performance-enhanced EOP equipped with a glassified track-etch polycarbonate membrane (PC), which has a nanochannel surface covered by allylhydridopolycarbosilane (AHPCS). The effects of applied voltage, pH and membrane pore size on the electroosmotic flow velocity, along with a comparative study of the EOP with coated and pure membranes were investigated. It was found that when low DC voltage (10 - 40 V) was applied to both ends of the pump, the magnitude of the electroosmotic flow was linearly proportional to the voltage when the pore size of the membrane was less than 600 nm. A higher flow rate was obtained with larger pore size membranes. Compared with the uncoated film, the coated one showed faster electroosmosis velocity, with higher stability under the same conditions. For pH 10.0 buffer solution, a flow rate of 89.13 μL/min was obtained in the modified membrane-based EOP with excellent repeatability and durability, while the flow rate was only 37.89 μL/min in the bare PC membrane under 20 V. In order to demonstrate the performance of the developed EOP, the EOP was used for microcomplexometric titration to determine actual tap water hardness. The measured results were highly consistent with the results of a conventional complexometric titration methed. The EOP with an AHPCS-coated plastic membrane expanded the application range to harsh condition solutions, such as high-concentration acids or bases.
Replaceable Dielectric Film for Low-Voltage and High-Performance Electrowetting-Based Digital Microfluidics

Abstract:Electrowetting-on-dielectric (EWOD) technology has been considered as a promising candidate for digital microfluidic (DMF) applications due to its outstanding flexibility and integrability. The dielectric layer with a hydrophobic surface is the key element of an EWOD device, determining its driving voltage, reliability, and lifetime. Hereby, inspired by the ionic-liquid-filled structuring polymer with high capacitance independent on thickness, namely ion gel (IG), we develop a polymer (P)-ion gel-amorphous fluoropolymer, namely, PIGAF, composite film as a replaceable hydrophobic dielectric layer for fabrication of a high-efficiency and stable EWOD-DMF device at relatively low voltage. The results show that the proposed EWOD devices using the PIGAF-based dielectric layer can achieve a large contact angle (θ) change of ∼50° and excellent reversibility with a contact angle hysteresis of ≤5° at a relatively low voltage of 30 Vrms. More importantly, the EWOD actuation voltage did not change obviously with the PIGAF film thickness in the range of several to tens of microns, enabling the thickness of the film to be adjusted according to the demand within a certain range while keeping the actuation voltage low. An EWOD-DMF device can be prepared by simply stacking a PIGAF film onto a PCB board, demonstrating stable droplet actuation (motion) at 30 Vrms and 1 kHz as well as a maximum moving velocity of 69 mm/s at 140 Vrms and 1 kHz. The PIGAF film was highly stable and reliable, maintaining excellent EWOD performance after multiple droplet manipulations (≥50 cycles) or long-term storage of 1 year. The proposed EWOD-DMF device has been demonstrated for digital chemical reactions and biomedical sensing applications.

Abstract:Droplet manipulation on a substrate by electrical signals is instrumental to the automation and miniaturization of labor-intensive assays in life science and chemistry. Current techniques are primarily based on either electrowetting or a more recent ionic-surfactant-mediated electro-dewetting effect. Here, we report that the two effects can occur simultaneously on the same substrate. Using a dope silicon substrate and an aqueous droplet with a cationic surfactant, the surface exhibits dewetting at positive biases and wetting at negative. Such a polarity-dependent wetting–dewetting transition enables a more significant wettability change (>60° contact angle change between ±3 V), which preserves after multiple wetting–dewetting cycles. We also find that the transition does not experience contact angle hysteresis that sole electrowetting commonly suffers from. Benefitting from these features, we experimentally show that droplet manipulation on a digital microfluidic device is more efficient and robust using this joint mechanism.

Compression tests using four kinds of electrodes, namely the smooth, hole array patterned by laser pulse, nylon net covered, and acid etched column patterned electrodes, have been done, respectively. Results show that laser patterned and nylon net covered electrodes significantly enhanced the compressive stress of the ER fluid. The enhancement is ascribed to the increase of local electric field near electrodes after patterning, which increased the interfacial strength between ER fluid and electrodes, and effectively suppressed the slip of solidified ER fluid from electrode. The tests of current density during compression and the finite element analysis of the electric field distribution of patterned electrodes supported this slip suppression effect. The results raised a fundamental question of what is the real strength of ER fluids, since the slip of highly solidified ER fluid are usually not considered during various tests. This investigation also shows that patterning electrodes is a good way to improve mechanical performances of ER fluids.
Behavior of Humidity Sensors Attached With Anisotropic Electrically Conductive Adhesives in Corrosive Environment

Abstract:Sensors are used increasingly in different applications. In some of these applications, they need to be able to tolerate harsh environments and also operate for long periods of time. One of the most challenging environments is corrosive media which may be present in many applications. In this paper, the reliability of humidity sensors attached to an FR-4 substrate was studied using a salt spray test to determine their tolerance for corrosion. Because of their structure, the attachment methods for the sensor components were restricted. Consequently, the sensor components were attached using flip chip technology with two different anisotropic conductive adhesives (ACAs). Afterward, the reliability of the sensor components was investigated using the salt spray test. During testing resistance of the ACA interconnection was measured in real time. To extract the failure mechanism, an extensive failure analysis was performed with scanning electron microscopy. The main failure mechanism was found to be corrosion of a polymer film in the sensor component. The results showed that ACA is promising material for sensor attachments, as most of the sensor components were able to withstand a considerable period of time under the salt spray test without failures.
Ultrafast high-pressure AC electro-osmotic pumps for portable biomedical microfluidics

Abstract:This paper details the development of an integrated AC electro-osmotic (ACEO) microfluidic pump for dilute electrolytes consisting of a long serpentine microchannel lined with three dimensional (3D) stepped electrode arrays. Using low AC voltage (1 V rms, 1 kHz), power (5 mW) and current (4.5 mA) in water, the pump is capable of generating a 1.3 kPa head pressure, a 100-fold increase over prior ACEO pumps, and a 1.3 mm/s effective slip velocity over the electrodes without flow reversal. The integrated ACEO pump can utilize low ionic strength solutions such as distilled water as the working solution to pump physiological strength (100 mM) biological solutions in separate microfluidic devices, with potential applications in portable or implantable biomedical microfluidic devices. As a proof-of-concept experiment, the use of the ACEO pumps for DNA hybridization in a microfluidic microarray is demonstrated.
