Abstract:The capabilities of the mechanical resonator-based nanosensors in detecting ultra-small mass or force shifts have driven a continuing exploration of the palette of nanomaterials for such application purpose. Based on large-scale molecular dynamics simulations, we have assessed the applicability of a new class of carbon nanomaterials for the nanoresonator usage, i.e., the single wall carbon nanotube (SWNT) network. It is found that the SWNT networks inherit the excellent mechanical properties from the constituent SWNTs, possessing a high natural frequency. However, although a high quality factor is suggested from the simulation results, it is hard to obtain an unambiguous Q-factor due to the existence of vibration modes in addition to the dominant mode. The nonlinearities resulting from these extra vibration modes are found to exist uniformly under various testing conditions including different initial actuations and temperatures. Further testing shows that these modes can be effectively suppressed through the introduction of axial strain, leading to an extremely high quality factor in the order of 109 estimated from the SWNT network with 2% tensile strain. Additional studies indicate that the carbon rings connecting the SWNTs can also be used to alter the vibrational properties of the resulting network. This study suggests that the SWNT network can be a good candidate for the applications as nanoresonators.

Abstract:In this paper, two methods for reducing the nonlinearities in microelectromechanical systems flexural beams resonators have been demonstrated with established theoretical models and validated experimental results. The first method improves the conventional method of mutual cancellation between nonlinearities, in which the electrical nonlinearity has been decoupled utilizing the tuning capacitors inside a comb-drive DETF resonator to be used to controllably cancel the mechanical nonlinearity, which makes the nonlinearity reduction tunable and, meanwhile, alleviates the discontinuity of frequency spectrum, thus improving the frequency stability. The second method based on a fundamental view to redesign the DETF resonator into a doublefree semicircular beam resonator that can be operated at an elastic mode to eliminate the axial extension existing in the stretch mode of DETF and minimize the A-f effect. The proposed methods can effectively reduce the nonlinearity to achieve resonators with a wide linear regime, high signal-to-noise ratio, and good capability of power handling.
Finite Element-based Nonlinear Dynamic Optimization of Nanomechanical Resonators

Abstract:Nonlinear dynamic simulations of mechanical resonators have been facilitated by the advent of computational techniques that generate nonlinear reduced order models (ROMs) using the finite element (FE) method. However, designing devices with specific nonlinear characteristics remains inefficient since it requires manual adjustment of the design parameters and can result in suboptimal designs. Here, we integrate an FE-based nonlinear ROM technique with a derivative-free optimization algorithm to enable the design of nonlinear mechanical resonators. The resulting methodology is used to optimize the support design of high-stress nanomechanical Si3N4 string resonators, in the presence of conflicting objectives such as simultaneous enhancement of Q-factor and nonlinear Duffing constant. To that end, we generate Pareto frontiers that highlight the trade-offs between optimization objectives and validate the results both numerically and experimentally. To further demonstrate the capability of multi-objective optimization for practical design challenges, we simultaneously optimize the design of nanoresonators for three key figure-of-merits in resonant sensing: power consumption, sensitivity and response time. The presented methodology can facilitate and accelerate designing (nano)mechanical resonators with optimized performance for a wide variety of applications.

Abstract:Although strain engineering and soft-clamping techniques for attaining high Q -factors in nanoresonators have received much attention, their impact on nonlinear dynamics is not fully understood. In this study, we show that nonlinearity of high- Q Si 3 N 4 nanomechanical string resonators can be substantially tuned by support design. Through careful engineering of support geometries, we control both stress and mechanical nonlinearities, effectively tuning nonlinear stiffness of two orders of magnitude. Our approach also allows control over the sign of the Duffing constant resulting in nonlinear softening of the mechanical mode that conventionally exhibits hardening behavior. We elucidate the influence of support design on the magnitude and trend of the nonlinearity using both analytical and finite element-based reduced-order models that validate our experimental findings. Our work provides evidence of the role of soft-clamping on the nonlinear dynamic response of nanoresonators, offering an alternative pathway for nullifying or enhancing nonlinearity in a reproducible and passive manner.

Abstract:Even a relatively weak drive force is enough to push a typical nanomechanical resonator into the nonlinear regime. Consequently, nonlinearities are widespread in nanomechanics and determine the critical characteristics of nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS) resonators. A thorough understanding of the nonlinear dynamics of higher eigenmodes of NEMS resonators would be beneficial for progress, given their use in applications and fundamental studies. Here, we characterize the nonlinearity and the linear dynamic range (LDR) of each eigenmode of two nanomechanical beam resonators with different intrinsic tension values up to eigenmode $n=11$. We find that the modal Duffing constant increases as $n^4$, while the critical amplitude for the onset of nonlinearity decreases as $1/n$. The LDR, determined from the ratio of the critical amplitude to the thermal noise amplitude, increases weakly with $n$. Our findings are consistent with our theory treating the beam as a string, with the nonlinearity emerging from stretching at high amplitudes. These scaling laws, observed in experiments and validated theoretically, can be leveraged for pushing the limits of NEMS-based sensing even further.

Ultra-tuning of nonlinear drumhead MEMS resonators by electro-thermoelastic buckling

Abstract:Nonlinear micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) resonators open new opportunities in sensing and signal manipulation compared to their linear counterparts by enabling frequency tuning and increased bandwidth. Here, we design, fabricate and study drumhead resonators exhibiting strongly nonlinear dynamics and develop a reduced order model (ROM) to capture their response accurately. The resonators undergo electrostatically-mediated thermoelastic buckling which tunes their natural frequency from 4.7 to 11.3 MHz, a factor of 2.4x tunability. Moreover, the imposed buckling switches the nonlinearity of the resonators between purely stiffening, purely softening, and even softening-to-stiffening. Accessing these exotic dynamics requires precise control of the temperature and the DC electrostatic forces near the resonator's critical-buckling point. To explain the observed tunability, we develop a one-dimensional physics-based ROM that predicts the linear and nonlinear response of the fundamental bending mode of these drumhead resonators. The ROM captures the dynamic effects of the internal stresses resulting from three sources: The residual stresses from the fabrication process, the mismatch in thermal expansion between the constituent layers, and lastly, the applied electrostatic forces. The ROM replicates the observed tunability of linear (within 5.5% error) and nonlinear responses even near the states of critical buckling. These remarkable nonlinear and large tunability of the natural frequency are valuable features for on-chip acoustic devices in broad applications such as signal manipulation, filtering, and MEMS waveguides.

Abstract:Pore size and interconnectivity have essential role in different biological applications of synthetic porous biomaterials. Recent improvements in technology make it possible to produce nanoporous materials having pores of controllable dimensions at atomic scale. In the present study, based upon a refined truncated cube lattice structure, the elastic mechanical properties of nanoporous materials have been extracted explicitly in terms of the pore size. Afterwards, the size-dependent nonlinear large-amplitude vibrations of micro/nano-beams made of the nanoporous material are explored. To this purpose, the nonlocal strain gradient elasticity theory is utilized within the framework of the refined hyperbolic shear deformation beam theory to capture the both small-scale effects of hardening-stiffness and softening-stiffness. Finally, the Galerkin method together with an improved perturbation technique is employed to construct explicit analytical expression for the nonlocal strain gradient frequency-deflection response of micro/nano-beams made of nanoporous materials. It is demonstrated that, by increasing the pore size, the nonlinear frequency associated with the large-amplitude vibration of micro/nano-beams made of nanoporous material reduces, but the rate of this reduction becomes lower for higher pore size.
Characterizing multi-mode nonlinear dynamics of nanomechanical resonators

Abstract:Mechanical nonlinearities dominate the motion of nanoresonators already at relatively small oscillation amplitudes. Although single and coupled two-degrees-of-freedom models have been used to account for experimentally observed nonlinear effects, it is shown that these models quickly deviate from experimental findings when multiple modes influence the nonlinear response. Here, we present a nonlinear reduced-order modelling methodology based on FEM simulations for capturing the global nonlinear dynamics of nanomechanical resonators. Our physics-based approach obtains the quadratic and cubic nonlinearities of resonators over a wide frequency range that spans 70 MHz. To qualitatively validate our approach, we perform experiments on a graphene nanodrum driven opto-thermally and show that the model can replicate diverse ranges of nonlinear phenomena, including multi-stability, parametric resonance, and different internal resonances without considering any empirical nonlinear fitting parameters. By providing a direct link between microscopic geometry, material parameters, and nonlinear dynamic response, we clarify the physical significance of nonlinear parameters that are obtained from fitting the dynamics of nanomechanical systems, and provide a route for designing devices with desired nonlinear behaviour.

Abstract:This paper reports a micro-machined clamped-free semicircular beam resonator aiming to eliminate the nonlinearity that widely exists in traditional mechanical resonators. Cubic coefficients over vibration displacement due to axial extension of the beams are analyzed through theoretical modelling, and the corresponding frequency effect is demonstrated. With the device working in the elastic vibration mode, the cubic coefficients are eliminated by using a free end to release the nonlinear extension of beams and thus the inside axial stress. The amplitude-frequency (A-f) effect is overcome in a large region of source power, and the coefficient of frequency softening is linearized in a large region of polarization voltage. As a result, the resonator can be driven at larger vibration amplitude to achieve a high signal to noise ratio and power handling performance.

Abstract:Advances in micro- and nanofabrication technologies have enabled the development of novel micro- and nanomechanical resonators which have attracted significant attention due to their fascinating physical properties and growing potential applications. In this review, we have presented a brief overview of the resonance behavior and frequency tuning principles by varying either the mass or the stiffness of resonators. The progress in micro- and nanomechanical resonators using the tuning electrode, tuning fork, and suspended channel structures and made of graphene have been reviewed. We have also highlighted some major influencing factors such as large-amplitude effect, surface effect and fluid effect on the performances of resonators. More specifically, we have addressed the effects of axial stress/strain, residual surface stress and adsorption-induced surface stress on the sensing and detection applications and discussed the current challenges. We have significantly focused on the active and passive frequency tuning methods and techniques for micro- and nanomechanical resonator applications. On one hand, we have comprehensively evaluated the advantages and disadvantages of each strategy, including active methods such as electrothermal, electrostatic, piezoelectrical, dielectric, magnetomotive, photothermal, mode-coupling as well as tension-based tuning mechanisms, and passive techniques such as post-fabrication and post-packaging tuning processes. On the other hand, the tuning capability and challenges to integrate reliable and customizable frequency tuning methods have been addressed. We have additionally concluded with a discussion of important future directions for further tunable micro- and nanomechanical resonators.

Selective active resonance tuning for multi-mode nonlinear photonic cavities

Abstract:Resonant enhancement of nonlinear photonic processes is critical for the scalability of applications such as long-distance entanglement generation. To implement nonlinear resonant enhancement, multiple resonator modes must be individually tuned onto a precise set of process wavelengths, which requires multiple linearly-independent tuning methods. Using coupled auxiliary resonators to indirectly tune modes in a multi-resonant nonlinear cavity is particularly attractive because it allows the extension of a single physical tuning mechanism, such as thermal tuning, to provide the required independent controls. Here we model and simulate the performance and tradeoffs of a coupled-resonator tuning scheme which uses auxiliary resonators to tune specific modes of a multi-resonant nonlinear process. Our analysis determines the tuning bandwidth for steady-state mode field intensity can significantly exceed the inter-cavity coupling rate if the total quality factor of the auxiliary resonator is higher than the multi-mode main resonator. Consequently, over-coupling a nonlinear resonator mode to improve the maximum efficiency of a frequency conversion process will simultaneously expand the auxiliary resonator tuning bandwidth for that mode, indicating a natural compatibility with this tuning scheme. We apply the model to an existing small-diameter triply-resonant ring resonator design and find that a tuning bandwidth of 136 GHz ~ 1.1 nm can be attained for a mode in the telecom band while limiting excess scattering losses to a quality factor of 10^6. Such range would span the distribution of inhomogeneously broadened quantum emitter ensembles as well as resonator fabrication variations, indicating the potential for the auxiliary resonators to enable not only low-loss telecom conversion but also the generation of indistinguishable photons in a quantum network.

Abstract:In this work, the relationship between nonlinear effects and the signal-to-noise ratio of a resonator is analyzed and the impact of reducing nonlinear effects of the resonator on the performance of a resonant accelerometer is investigated. A theoretical framework is formulated to evaluate the dynamic range of the double clamped-clamped resonator. A reduction of the mechanical nonlinearity is achieved through an external electrostatic force, resulting in an enhancement of the dynamic range from 93.8 dB to 132.6 dB. Experimental findings indicate the nonlinear coefficient is reduced to 2.2% compared to an approach without nonlinearity compensation. The nonlinearity compensation demonstrates a 12.8 dB improvement in the signal-to-noise ratio of the resonator, leading to a 5.5-fold increase in resolution of the accelerometer and an extension of the dynamic range by 15 dB. The proposed technique enables the performance of resonant sensors to be further optimized. [2024-0107]

Abstract:Support loss, as one of the main energy dissipation sources in micro/nano mechanical resonators, is generally evaluated by linear theories without considering mid-plane stretching. Predictions of support loss based on linear elastic theory cannot be applied to resonators working in nonlinear regime with large vibration amplitude. In this regard, we investigate the support loss of a doubly clamped micro/nano beam resonator in in-plane flexural vibration in this study, with both geometric nonlinearity and axial pre-tension considered, aiming to accurately model the support loss for high-performance resonators under large-deflection vibration. The expression of support loss is derived, with both the normal stress induced by the mid-plane stretching and shear stress distributed in the attachment region of the support taken into account. The analytical model proposed in this work is validated by finite element simulations and the experimental data of previous studies. Furthermore, the influence of the axial pre-tension on nonlinear vibration properties and that of the vibration amplitude on the support loss are probed. The effects of the axial pre-tension and the aspect ratio on the support loss are also analyzed. The analytical results demonstrate that the mid-plane stretching effect due to geometric nonlinearity leads to larger support loss, and the support loss increases with vibration amplitude. Hopefully, the nonlinear model of support loss developed in this work may provide guidelines to evaluate the support loss and elucidate the phenomenon of the support loss increasing with vibration amplitude.

Abstract:We report the thermal tuning of the mechanical nonlinearity in GaAs double-clamped MEMS beam resonators for sensitive thermal sensing applications. We have estimated the mechanical nonlinearity in GaAs MEMS beam resonator by measuring its resonance frequency as a function of oscillation amplitude. The MEMS resonator shows a hardening nonlinearity with a small linear oscillation range of ∼30 nm. When electrical heat is applied to the MEMS beam, we have observed a significant reduction in the mechanical nonlinearity of MEMS resonators near the buckling point of the MEMS beam. The decrease in the mechanical nonlinearity originates from the bending of the MEMS beam, which gives a softening nonlinearity term and, hence, compensates the total nonlinearity. With the thermal tuning effect, MEMS resonator can maintain a very large quasi linear oscillation amplitude of ∼300 nm, which is ∼10 times larger than the linear oscillation range without the control of nonlinearity.

Abstract:Nonlinearity in macroscopic mechanical systems may lead to abundant phenomena for fundamental studies and potential applications. However, it is difficult to generate nonlinearity due to the fact that macroscopic mechanical systems follow Hooke’s law and respond linearly to external force, unless strong drive is used. Here we propose and experimentally realize high cubic nonlinear response in a macroscopic mechanical system by exploring the anharmonicity in chemical bonding interactions. We demonstrate the high tunability of nonlinear response by precisely controlling the chemical bonding interaction, and realize, at the single-bond limit, a cubic elastic constant of 1 × 10 20 N m −3 . This enables us to observe the resonator’s vibrational bi-states transitions driven by the weak Brownian thermal noise at 6 K. This method can be flexibly applied to a variety of mechanical systems to improve nonlinear responses, and can be used, with further improvements, to explore macroscopic quantum mechanics.

Abstract:Whispering gallery mode (WGM) microcavities strongly enhance nonlinear optical processes like optical frequency comb, Raman scattering and optomechanics, which nowadays enable cutting-edge applications in microwave synthesis, optical sensing spectroscopy, and integrated photonics. Yet, tunability of their resonances, mostly via coarse and complicated mechanism through temperature, electrical or mechanical means, still poses a major challenge for precision applications as above. Here we introduce a new passive scheme to finely tune resonances of WGMs at MHz precision with an external probe. Such probe remotely transfers heat through a gap from an optical microcavity, effectively tuning its resonances by thermal-optic nonlinearity. Moreover, we explore this unique technique in microcavity nonlinear optics, demonstrating the generation of a tunable optical frequency comb and backward stimulated Brillouin scattering with variable beating frequencies. This new technique addresses the core problem of WGM microcavity's fine-tuning, paving the way for important applications like spectroscopy and frequency synthesis.

Abstract:This paper analyzes the nonlinear vibration of the Micro-machined Resonant Accelerometer (MRA) by system modeling and simulation. The optimization designs to weaken the influence of the nonlinear vibration are proposed. With decreasing the mechanism dimension of the MRA, the effects of the nonlinear vibration become more obviously. The nonlinear vibration affects the precision and system stability of the micro-machined resonant accelerometer. The simulation results of the nonlinear system are well consistent with the experiments, and predict that the optimizing structure will effectively weaken the nonlinear effect.

Abstract:<p>Micro and nanoelectromechanical systems M/NEMS have been extensively investigated and exploited in the past few decades for various applications and for probing fundamental physical phenomena. Understanding the linear and nonlinear dynamical behaviors of the movable structures in these systems is crucial for their successful implementation in various novel technologies and to meet the long list of new sophisticated requirements. This paper presents a review for some of the recent topics pertaining to the dynamical behaviors, linear and nonlinear, of M/NEMS resonating structures. First, an overview is presented of the various used dynamical approaches to enhance the sensitivity of resonators for sensing applications. Then a summary is presented of the recent works on the linear and nonlinear mode coupling in M/NEMS resonator. Next, recent research is reviewed on coupled M/NEMS resonators, mechanically and electrically, leading to collective behaviors like mode localization. The final part of the paper discusses analytical approaches that have been developed to better understand and investigate the dynamical behavior of M/NEMS resonators focusing on the perturbation method the multiple time scales.</p>

Abstract:A locally resonant (LR) thermo-magneto-mechanical phononic crystal (PC) nanobeam by periodically attaching “vertical spring-precompressed spring-mass” resonators onto the surface of base nanobeam is proposed, which the corresponding band structure is calculated by extending surface elasticity theory and thermo-magneto-mechanical coupling constitutive model to plane wave expansion (PWE) method. In addition, the influencing rules of resonator, thermo-magneto-mechanical fields, surface effects and geometric parameters are discussed. Numerical results and further analysis demonstrate that more band gaps with lower starting frequency and wider frequency range can be opened by periodically adding resonators onto the surface of nanobeam. The horizontal springs with larger degree of pre-compression can obtain lower starting frequency of first band gap. The effect of operating temperature on band gaps can be regarded as the relation between operating temperature and Young’s modulus of epoxy. Moreover, a singular pre-stress is existed that makes the band gaps not easily opened, which keeps increasing by increasing operating temperature, magnetic field, the ratio between width and thickness or decreasing the ratio between lengths of Terfenol-D and epoxy. All the researches are expected to be applied to the active control of vibration propagation in the field of nano thermo-magneto-mechanical system.
