Abstract:Nb-doped SrTiO3 bulk materials with high quality are fabricated using a facile process. The doping level in SrTiO3 is controlled in a doping range of 0-20 mol%. Thermoelectric response including electrical conductivity sigma, Seebeck coefficient S, and thermal conductivity k has been investigated in a high-temperature regime above 300 K. The ZT values show obvious doping-level dependences, in which the largest value as high as 0.37 at 1000 K and 0.40 at 1100 K is realized in the optimized doping range of 10-15 mol%. This is the first time such a remarkable thermoelectric performance was accomplished in electron-doped SrTiO3 ceramics.

Abstract:Owing to the non-toxicity and low cost, Mg3Sb2-based Zintls are promising candidates for mid-temperature thermoelectric applications. However, the thermoelectric performance of p-type Mg3Sb2 is significantly lower than that of n-type ones. Here, we achieve simultaneous optimization of the band structure and enhanced phonon scattering through the combined doping of Na at the cation site and Bi at the anion site, leading to a competitive figure of merit, ZT of 0.73 at 773 K and a maximum theoretical energy conversion efficiency of 6.5 % at a temperature difference of 450 K. First-principles calculations indicate that Na and Bi co-doping effectively narrows the band gap and shifts the Fermi level into the valence band, thereby increasing the hole carrier concentration. This ensures a relatively high Seebeck coefficient and improved electrical conductivity, resulting in an excellent power factor of 7.5 mu W cm(-1) K-2. Additionally, by adjusting the amount of Bi nanoprecipitates in the matrix, the heterogeneous interfaces significantly enhance phonon scattering and markedly reduce the lattice thermal conductivity (0.52 W m(-1) K-1), collectively leading to the high thermoelectric performance. Furthermore, by pairing n-type Mg3.18Y0.02Sb1.5Bi0.49Se0.01, a double-leg thermoelectric device achieves an energy conversion efficiency of 4.1 % with a temperature difference of 390 K.

Abstract:Recently, α-MgAgSb-based materials have proved to be a kind of potential thermoelectric materials around room temperature. Here, a series of Zn-doped α-MgAgSb have been successfully synthesized by high-temperature milting and spark plasma sintering combined with annealing. Effect of Zn-doping on the microstructure and thermoelectric performance of α-MgAgSb has been investigated. Results show that Zn-doping can enhance the crystallization and carrier concentration, resulting in an increased electrical performance. Simultaneously, multiscales of nanodots, defects, grain boundaries and impurities have been introduced to reduce the lattice thermal performance. Finally, both the optimized electrical and thermal properties significantly promote the thermoelectric performance. A peak ZT of 1.29 has achieved for Mg0.985Zn0.015Ag0.97Sb0.99 at 550 K, about 18% higher than MgAg0.97Sb0.99, which indicates that Zn-doping into Mg-site is beneficial to optimize the performance of α-MgAgSb-based thermoelectric materials.

Abstract:Strontium titanite (SrTiO3), which is an experimentally-friendly thermoelectric material, could be a promising candidate for thermoelectric power generation applications. The theorectical study indicates the co-doping of La and Nb could enhance the thermoelectric performance, however, the thermoelectric figure of merits (ZTs) of SrTiO3 are still low because the co-doping process at nano-scale is experimentally difficult to control. Here we report a high performance SrTiO3 with La-Nb co-doping, which are prepared by a combination of hydrothermal method and high-efficiency sintering. Nano-scale co-doping is successfully modulated by hydrothermal method, and nano-inclusions precipitate during sintering process, to form complex microstructures. In this case, the electrical and thermal transport properties are optimized simultaneously by doping concentration and dopants type, resulting in a record-high ZT >0.6 at 1000−1100K in the 10mol% La and 10mol% Nb doped SrTiO3 bulk materials. The nano-scale modulation doping and microstructure controlling approach validated in the present study should be also applicable for other thermoelectric materials.

Abstract:N-type Mg3Sb2 thermoelectric material has a complex crystal structure and electronic structure, which is a new thermoelectric material with excellent application prospects. The state density and band structure of Mg24Sb16 and Bi/Se/Pr–Se/Nd–Se doped Mg24Sb16 are first-principles calculated. Se/Pr–Se/Nd–Se doped increases the density of states around the Fermi level. Bi-doped does not impact the band structure because the electronic structure between Sb and Bi are similar. The band gap of Pr–Se/Nd–Se doped becomes narrower, which is more conducive to carrier transport and increases carrier concentration than that of single-doped Se. The experimental results show that Pr and Nd replace Mg to provide more electrons for the system. The carrier concentration of the co-doped sample increases significantly, thus improving the power factor and optimizing the samples' electrical properties. The highest ZT value of the Mg3.2Sb1.5Bi0.49Se0.01 sample is 1.21. Pr–Se/Nd–Se co-doped ZT values are 1.67 and 1.74, respectively, 38% and 43% higher than the Mg3.2Sb1.5Bi0.49Se0.01 sample. Multi-element doped is an effective strategy to improve the thermoelectric properties of materials.

Abstract:Bi-based YbMg2Bi1.98 Zintl compounds represent promising thermoelectric materials. Precise composition and appropriate doping are of great importance for this complex semiconductor. Here, the influence of Zn substitution for Mg on the microstructure and thermoelectric properties of p-type YbMg1.85−xZnxBi1.98 (x = 0, 0.05, 0.08, 0.13, 0.23) was investigated. Polycrystalline samples were prepared using induction melting and densified with spark plasma sintering. X-ray diffraction confirmed that the major phase of the samples possesses the trigonal CaAl2Si2-type crystal structure, and SEM/EDS indicated the presence of minor secondary phases. The electrical conductivity increases and the lattice thermal conductivity decreases with more Zn doping in YbMg1.85−xZnxBi1.98, whereas the Seebeck coefficient has a large reduction. The band gap decreases with increasing Zn concentration and leads to bipolar conduction, resulting in an increase in the thermal conductivity at higher temperatures. Figure of merit ZT values of 0.51 and 0.49 were found for the samples with x = 0 and 0.05 at 773 K, respectively. The maximum amount of Zn doping is suggested to be less than x = 0.1.

Abstract:Contributing to the unique structural and chemical characteristics, AM2X2 Zintl compounds with the CaAl2Si2-type structure present advanced thermoelectric properties. In the present work, for YbMg2Bi2 compounds, the impact of Ba substitution on the Yb site is investigated. Owing to the changed electronegativity, the addition of Ba gives rise to the decline of carrier concentration and then induces the depressed power factor. However, fortunately, phonon scattering is dramatically intensified at the same time, which could be attributed to the obvious mass and strain fluctuation that originated from a visibly different mass/size between the Yb and Ba atoms. Typically, the lattice thermal conductivity of Yb0.75Ba0.25Mg2Bi1.98 achieves 1.21 W m–1 K–1 with a decrease of 46% compared to that of pristine YbMg2Bi1.98 at room temperature. Ultimately, for nontoxic Yb0.75Ba0.25Mg2Bi1.98, a significantly improved ZT value of ∼1.04 at 823 K is achieved. More importantly, the ZTeng value noticeably increases to ∼0.64 when Th = 873 K and Tc = 300 K, with an enhancement of ∼46% compared with the initial one. Meanwhile, the characteristic of nontoxicity would also enhance the possibility of YbMg2Bi2 to realize practical application.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Synthesis of Zintl Phase Metal Silicide Thermoelectric Materials in Magnesium/Zinc Flux

Abstract:Zintl phases have potential applications as thermoelectric materials for power generation and cooling owing to their complex crystal structures and unique electronic properties. We carried out reactions of silicon with barium and strontium in excess Mg/Zn flux to synthesize (Ba/Sr)5+xMg19-xSi12 Zintl phases, investigating the effect of varying Ba/Sr ratio on site mixing and thermoelectric properties. (Ba/Sr)5+xMg19-xSi12 compounds with 0 < x < 3 are charge-balanced Zintl phases which adopt the hexagonal Ho5Ni19P12 structure type (space group P6̅2m). Density of states calculations indicate that these materials are semimetals. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction data and elemental analysis for Ba5Mg19Si12, Ba4.86Sr2.94Mg16.20Si12, Ba3.63Sr4.20Mg16.17Si12, Ba1.93Sr5.99Mg16.08Si12, and Sr7.82Mg16.18Si12 show occupation of barium and strontium cations in Ho sites, while strontium mixes with magnesium on a specific Ni site. Powder XRD data of products show that they are single phase throughout the sample. Thermoelectric measurements indicate that increasing strontium content and mixing on three cation sites decreases thermal conductivity; it is hypothesized that improved overall thermoelectric behavior is likely due to the rattling of the Sr cations in their positions.
Synergistic Effect of Band and Nanostructure Engineering on the Boosted Thermoelectric Performance of n‐Type Mg3+δ(Sb, Bi)2 Zintls

Abstract:A new strategy of Y doping and nanostructuring is designed for achieving outstanding thermoelectric performance in Mg3.2Sb1.5Bi0.49Se0.01‐based Zintls with a peak ZT of ≈1.87 at 773 K, a high average ZT of ≈1.2, and a high energy conversion efficiency of ≈13.8% predicted by a temperature gradient of 450 K. Thermoelectric Mg3+δ(Sb, Bi)2 Zintls have attracted significant attention because of their high‐performing, eco‐friendly, and cost‐effective features, but their thermoelectric properties still need improvement for application to practical devices. Here an outstanding ZT of ≈1.87 at 773 K and a high average ZT of ≈1.2 in n‐type Y‐doped Mg3.2Sb1.5Bi0.49Se0.01 are reported, both of which rank as top values among the reported literature. First‐principles calculations indicate that substituting the Mg site with Y shifts the Fermi level into the conduction band and simultaneously narrows the bandgap, both strengthening the n‐type semiconducting feature and boosting the electron carrier density of Mg3.2Sb1.5Bi0.49Se0.01. A high power factor of ≈21.4 μW cm–1 K–2 is achieved at 773 K in Mg3.18Y0.02Sb1.5Bi0.49Se0.01, benefiting from the rationally tuned carrier density of ≈7.7 × 1019 cm–3 at this temperature. In addition, the doped Ys act as point defects to cause significant lattice distortions and strains, confirmed by comprehensive micro/nanostructure characterizations. These lattice imperfections suppress the lattice thermal conductivity to ≈0.41 W m–1 K–1 at 773 K, leading to such a high ZT. Furthermore, a high energy conversion efficiency of ≈13.8% is predicted by a temperature gradient of 450 K, indicating a great potential to be applied to practical devices for mid‐temperature applications.

Abstract:CaAl2Si2 structure Zintl compounds are promising thermoelectric materials and have been extensively studied recently. In this study, Eu0.5Ca0.5Zn2-xMgxSb2 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.3) compounds have been prepared by ball milling and spark plasma sintering. Results show that for Eu0.5Ca0.5Zn2Sb2, ZT has been improved about 20% compared with previously reported thermoelectric properties through the ball milling and hot-pressing preparation process. Moreover, the thermoelectric performance of Eu0.5Ca0.5Zn2Sb2 can be further increased through Mg substitution. Mg replacing Zn has a strong impact on phonon scattering, resulting in low thermal conductivity. A highest ZT about 1.05 is obtained in the Eu0.5Ca0.5Zn1.8Mg0.2Sb2 sample at 773 K. The obtained high thermoelectric performance in our work is comparable with other p-type Zintl thermoelectric materials, and this work provides a reference for the improvement of properties of other CaAl2Si2 structure Zintl thermoelectric materials.

Abstract:Taking an example of CaMg2Bi2 with covalent and ionic bonds, this work reveals the importance of tailoring chemical bonding in materials with multiple bonding mechanism for improving thermoelectric performance. Via manipulating chemical bonding, optimizing carrier concentration and modulating band structure, a high figure‐of‐merit ZT of 1.1 at 823 K in (Ca0.7Ba0.25Zn0.05)0.995Na0.005Mg2Bi1.98 sample is realized. Chemical bonds determine electron and phonon transport in solids. Tailoring chemical bonding in thermoelectric materials causes desirable or compromise thermoelectric transport properties. In this work, taking an example of CaMg2Bi2 with covalent and ionic bonds, density functional theory calculations uncover that element Zn, respectively, replacing Ca and Mg sites cause the weakness of ionic and covalent bonding. Electrically, Zn doping at both Ca and Mg sites increases carrier concentration, while the former leads to higher carrier concentration than that of the latter because of its lower vacancy formation energy. Both doping types increase density‐of‐state effective mass but their mechanisms are different. The Zn doping Ca site induces resonance level in valence band and Zn doping Mg site promotes orbital alignment. Thermally, point defect and the change of phonon dispersion introduced by doping result in pronounced reduction of lattice thermal conductivity. Finally, combining with the further increase of carrier concentration caused by Na doping and the modulation of band structure and the decrease of lattice thermal conductivity caused by Ba doping, a high figure‐of‐merit ZT of 1.1 at 823 K in Zn doping Ca sample is realized, which is competitive in 1–2–2 Zintl phase thermoelectric systems.

Enhancing thermoelectric performance of AB 2 Sb 2 -type Zintl phase through band shaping and lattice distortion

Abstract:AB 2 Sb 2 -type Zintl phases, especially Mg 3 Sb 2 , have garnered widespread attention in virtue of their nontoxic constituent elements and outstanding thermoelectric performance in n-type materials. However, the p-type counterpart of AB 2 Sb 2 still struggles with a low figure of merit zT , primarily because of the limited valence band degeneracy, large band effective mass, and relatively high thermal conductivity. Here we simultaneously optimize the electrical and thermal transports of p-type AB 2 Sb 2 -based materials through shaping the band edge and distorting the crystal lattice. By alloying Zn at Mg2 site and Ca at Mg1 site, we successfully decorate the crystal lattice of Mg 3 Sb 2 in real space and thereby modify the band structure in reciprocal space. Zn alloying promotes the band degeneracy while Ca alloying reduce the single band effective mass, which largely promotes the transport of charge carriers. Moreover, the distorted crystal lattice effectively blocks the heat-carry phonons to reduce the lattice thermal conductivity κ L . A high zT of 0.81 is finally realized at 750 K in our Zn/Ca co-alloyed samples, which is three times larger than that of Mg 3 Sb 2 matrix. Our work opens new possibilities for the synthetic optimization of both electrical and thermal transports in Zintl phase and other thermoelectric systems.

Abstract:A series of new magnesium bismuth Zintl phases, A14MgBi11 (A = Ca, Sr, Eu), have been synthesized, and their thermoelectric properties were systematically evaluated. These novel phases belong to the well-known Yb14MnSb11 family, whose structure adopts the tetragonal space group I41/acd (No. 142) with cell parameters of a = 17.0470(17)/17.854(2)/17.6660(7) Å and c = 22.665(5)/23.580(6)/23.2446(18) Å for Ca14MgBi11, Sr14MgBi11, and Eu14MgBi11, respectively. Without intentional optimization, these materials exhibit high potential as new thermoelectric candidates. Especially for Sr14MgBi11, a high zT value of 0.72 has been approached at 1073 K. The discovery of these new Zintl series is very interesting, which implies the high possibility of extending the 14-1-11 thermoelectric system to the bismuth analogues in the development of highly efficient thermoelectric materials. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were incorporated as well to help better understand the properties of these important compounds.
Extraordinary thermoelectric performance, thermal stability and mechanical properties of n-type Mg3Sb1.5Bi0.5 through multi-dopants at interstitial site

Abstract:Mg3Sb2-based thermoelectric materials have attracted much interest since the discovery of their excellent n-type thermoelectric performance with excess Mg content and proper dopant. Herein, we proposed a doping diagram for Mg3Sb2-based material in a binary parameters space of electronegativity difference and atomic radius difference of extrinsic elements with Mg atom. Based on this doping diagram, we designed a multiple interstitial doped TMx:Mg3Sb1.5Bi0.5 (TM = CrMnFeCoCu) material, and achieved a high dimensionless figure of merit value of 0.76 at room temperature and 1.83 at 500 °C, respectively. The multiple interstitial dopants significantly suppress the formation of Mg vacancy, which is of great importance in protecting the electrical transport channel and improving the thermal stability. Besides, the mechanical properties are also enhanced due to the random distribution of elements in the matrix, impeding the migration of dislocations. Our work verifies the benefits of maximized sub-lattice disordering through the multi-elements doping strategy in the Mg3Sb1.5Bi0.5 material.

Abstract:High‐temperature thermoelectrics are necessary for space applications, and Zintl phases are amongst some of the best materials for these applications. Here, a new Zintl phase, Yb10MgSb9 (with a composition closer to Yb10.5MgSb9) is reported for the first time and demonstrates high thermoelectric performance upon doping due to its high Seebeck coefficient and ultralow thermal conductivity. Yb10MgSb9 is a new Zintl compound (with a composition closer to Yb10.5MgSb9) and a promising thermoelectric material first reported in this work. Undoped Yb10MgSb9 has an ultralow thermal conductivity due to crystallographic complexity and exhibits a relatively high peak p‐type Seebeck coefficient and high electrical resistivity. This is consistent with Zintl counting and density functional theory (DFT) calculations that the composition Yb10.5MgSb9 should be a semiconductor. Na is found experimentally to be an effective p‐type dopant potentially due to the replacement of Na+ for Yb2+, allowing for a significant decrease in electrical resistivity. With doping, a dramatic improvement of electrical conductivity is observed and the glass‐like thermal conductivity remains low, allowing for a significant enhancement of the thermoelectric figure of merit, zT. Doping increases the zT from 0.23 in undoped Yb10MgSb9 to 1.06 in 7 at% Na‐doped Yb10MgSb9 at 873K. This high thermoelectric performance found through Na‐doping places this material amongst the leading p‐type Zintl thermoelectrics, making it a promising candidate for future studies and high‐temperature thermoelectric applications.

Abstract:N-type Mg2Si0.58Sn0.42−xBix (0≤x≤0.015) compounds were prepared by melting the element metals in sealed tantalum tubes followed by hot pressing. The XRD results indicate that all samples are composites containing both major magnesium silicide solution phase and minor magnesium stannide solution phase. The Hall measurements show that the carrier concentrations and electrical conductivities increase with the increase of Bi doping amount. It was found that the intrinsic excitation shifts to high temperature due to Bi doping, which leads to the increase of the peak-temperatures of the Seebeck coefficient. The maximum dimensionless figure of merit is 0.65 at 700K for the sample x=0.015.
Excellent thermoelectric performance of boron-doped n-type Mg3Sb2-based materials via the manipulation of grain boundary scattering and control of Mg content

Abstract:Thermoelectric devices require thermoelectric materials with high figure-of-merit (ZT) values in the operating temperature range. In recent years, the Zintl phase compound, n-Mg3Sb2, has received much attention owing to its rich chemistry and structural complexity. However, it hardly achieves high ZT values throughout the medium temperature range. Herein, by increasing the sintering temperature as much as possible, we successfully increased the average grain size of the compound by 15 times, and the grain boundary scattering was manipulated to obtain high carrier mobility of up to 180 cm2 V−1 s−1. Simultaneously, we optimized the Mg content for ultralow lattice thermal conductivity. We first doped the Mg3Sb2-based materials with boron for higher sintering temperature, good thermal stability, and higher hardness. The synergistic optimization of electrical and thermal transport resulted in excellent ZT values (0.62 at 300 K, 1.81 at 773 K) and an average ZT of 1.4 (from 300 to 773 K), which are higher than the state-of-the-art values for n-type thermoelectric materials, demonstrating a high potential in device applications.

Abstract:Mg3Sb1.5Bi0.5-based Zintl compounds have attracted extensive attention as potential thermoelectric materials due to their earth-abundant elements. However, pure and intrinsic Mg3Sb1.5Bi0.5 manifests a poor thermoelectric performance because of its low electrical conductivity of about 3 × 102 S/m at room temperature. In this work, In and Se co-doping was carried out to optimize the thermoelectric performance of n-type Mg3Sb1.5Bi0.5-based material. The experimental results revealed that the carrier concentration and mobility of Mg3Sb1.5Bi0.5 significantly increased after In and Se co-doping, leading to an improvement of power factor. Simultaneously, lattice thermal conductivity was significantly reduced due to the large mass difference between In and Mg. A maximum zT of 1.64 at 723 K was obtained for the Mg3.17In0.03Sb1.5Bi0.49Se0.01 sample. And an average zT value of about 1.1 between 300 and 723 K was achieved, which insures its possible application at medium temperature range as a non-toxic and low-cost TE material.
