Abstract:Strontium titanite (SrTiO3), which is an experimentally-friendly thermoelectric material, could be a promising candidate for thermoelectric power generation applications. The theorectical study indicates the co-doping of La and Nb could enhance the thermoelectric performance, however, the thermoelectric figure of merits (ZTs) of SrTiO3 are still low because the co-doping process at nano-scale is experimentally difficult to control. Here we report a high performance SrTiO3 with La-Nb co-doping, which are prepared by a combination of hydrothermal method and high-efficiency sintering. Nano-scale co-doping is successfully modulated by hydrothermal method, and nano-inclusions precipitate during sintering process, to form complex microstructures. In this case, the electrical and thermal transport properties are optimized simultaneously by doping concentration and dopants type, resulting in a record-high ZT >0.6 at 1000−1100K in the 10mol% La and 10mol% Nb doped SrTiO3 bulk materials. The nano-scale modulation doping and microstructure controlling approach validated in the present study should be also applicable for other thermoelectric materials.

Abstract:Nb-doped SrTiO3 bulk materials with high quality are fabricated using a facile process. The doping level in SrTiO3 is controlled in a doping range of 0-20 mol%. Thermoelectric response including electrical conductivity sigma, Seebeck coefficient S, and thermal conductivity k has been investigated in a high-temperature regime above 300 K. The ZT values show obvious doping-level dependences, in which the largest value as high as 0.37 at 1000 K and 0.40 at 1100 K is realized in the optimized doping range of 10-15 mol%. This is the first time such a remarkable thermoelectric performance was accomplished in electron-doped SrTiO3 ceramics.

Abstract:Strontium titanate (STO) is an n-type oxide thermoelectric material, which has shown great prospects in recent years. The doping of La and Nb into STO can improve its power factor, whereas its thermal conductivity is still very high. Thus, in order to obtain a high thermoelectric figure-of-merit zT, it is very important to reduce its thermal conductivity. In this paper, using a combination of a hydrothermal method and a high-efficiency sintering method, we succeed in preparing a composite of pure STO and LaNb-doped STO, which simultaneously realizes lower thermal conductivity and higher Seebeck coefficient, therefore, the thermoelectric properties of STO are significantly improved. In the SrTiO3/LaNb-SrTiO3 bulk samples, the lowest thermal conductivity is 2.57 W.m(-1).K-1 and the highest zT is 0.35 at 1000 K for the STO/La10Nb20-STO sample.

Abstract:SrTiO3 is a high temperature thermoelectric material with calcium titanite structure that is environmentally friendly and affordable, but the high thermal conductivity at high temperatures limits its development, so how to maintain high electrical properties while reducing thermal conductivity is the most important problem facing SrTiO3. SiGe and SrTiO3 are both thermoelectric materials in the intermediate and high temperature region and have a lot of commonalities, and it is likely to obtain high thermoelectric properties through the interfacial effect of both, however, there is not any study on the compound regulation of the two. Therefore, in this study, phosphorus (P)-doped SiGe was compounded with Zr, La and Nb co-doped SrTiO3. 3 mol.%SiGe(C)/97 mol.% Sr0.9La0.1Ti0.89Zr0.01Nb0.1O3(Zr1Si3(C)) obtained by sintering under carbon reducing atmosphere shows a relatively large power factor of and low thermal conductivity of 2.88 Wm-1K-1 at 1000 K, achieve a ZT value to 0.42 at 1000 K. This is at a high level in this study of SrTiO3 composite thermoelectric materials and provides a new idea for the subsequent study of composite modulation.

Abstract:The large thermal conductivity of SrTiO3 bulk material limits its potential application for high-temperature thermoelectricity. The effects of all-scale grain boundaries and inclusions on the thermoelectric performance of Nb-doped bulk SrTiO3 materials are investigated in this study. Nano- to microscale grain boundaries and inclusions reduce the thermal conductivity by 30%. As a result, the ZT value is enhanced 2.6 times by a combination of all-sized crystals, energy filtering effect, multilevel scattering behaviors of nano/microscale grain boundaries and inclusions. Effect of La3+, Ag+ and Bi3+ doping on thermoelectric properties of SrTiO3: First-principles investigation

Abstract:First principles calculations were applied to study the thermoelectric properties of La3+-, Ag+- and Bi3+- doped SrTiO3. With the exception of Sr0.9La0.1TiO3, the band gaps of Sr0.8La0.1Ag0.1TiO3, Sr0.8La0.1Bi0.1TiO3 and Sr0.7La0.1Ag0.1Bi0.1TiO3 were higher than that of SrTiO3. La3+, Ag+, and Bi3+ doping can cause an increase in electrical conductivity and power factor, and a decrease in thermal conductivity, which improves the ZT. The thermal conductivities of SrTiO3, Sr0.9La0.1TiO3, Sr0.8La0.1Ag0.1TiO3, Sr0.8La0.1Bi0.1TiO3 and Sr0.7La0.1Ag0.1Bi0.1TiO3 successively decreased, while power factor and ZT increased. Sr0.7La0.1Ag0.1Bi0.1TiO3, in particular, has the smallest thermal conductivity (2.237 W/m/K), the highest power factor (1.18 mW/(mK2)) and ZT (0.597) at 1200 K, 2.195 times larger than that of SrTiO3 (0.272). In addition, the solid state reaction method was applied to prepare dense ceramics of 10 wt% Bi-doped and (Bi, Ag)-codoped Sr0.9La0.1TiO3. It is demonstrated that (Bi, Ag)-codoped Sr0.9La0.1TiO3 have improved power factors, thermal conductivities and ZT values. The calculations and experimental results are consistent. This work demonstrates a method of co-doping Bi3+, Ag+, and La3+ to enhance the thermoelectric performance of SrTiO3.

Abstract:La-doped strontium titanite (Sr0.9La0.1TiO3) is a promising candidate for n-type oxide thermoelectric materials. However, the ZT values of this material are low, leading to low conversion efficiency. Improvements in this efficiency are required. In this work, a high ZT value of 0.50 was obtained for Sr0.9La0.1TiO3 ceramic samples by adding 10 wt % Bi2O3 sintering aids and 20 wt % nanosized Ti powders to the matrix material. Although Ti was oxidized to TiO2 during the sintering process, nanoscale phase interfaces were beneficial for phonon scattering and thermal conductivity reduction. Nanosized metallic Bi and Bi2O3 particles were observed. These two factors played an important role in reducing the thermal conductivity from 2.5 W/(m K) at room temperature to 1.31 W/(m K) at 1073 K. Abstract:Thermoelectric and infrared radiation effects are extensively applied in the energy and aerospace sectors; however, the underlying physical mechanisms remain unclear. While numerous studies have been conducted on these effects individually, few have explored their commonalities and intrinsic connections. Thus, investigating the relationship between infrared radiation and thermoelectric performance presents an opportunity for innovative interdisciplinary research. This study focuses on how heat and light influence electrons by examining the relationship between the thermoelectric performance and the infrared radiation properties of rutile Ti1-xNbxO2 (x = 0.01, 0.05, 0.14, 0.20) materials synthesized using a solid-state method. First-principles calculations and doping optimization effectively controlled the Seebeck coefficient and electrical conductivity. Consequently, the Ti0.8Nb0.2O2 sample exhibited a high power factor and low thermal conductivity, resulting in a ZT value of 0.23. The sample absorbs infrared light in the 8-14 μm range, demonstrating a negative correlation between the ZT value and infrared emissivity. This finding offers a novel perspective on the interrelationship between infrared radiation and thermoelectric properties, providing theoretical guidance for the development of multifunctional materials.

Abstract:As a well-known n-type perovskite thermoelectric oxides, SrTiO3 has always captured attention to find strategies for achieving high thermoelectric performance. In this paper, a series of reduced Sr0.9La0.1TiO3/TiO2 biphase composite ceramics were prepared via the solid-state reaction method. The effects of TiO2 on the microstructure and thermoelectric properties of the ceramics were investigated. The addition of TiO2 enhanced the carrier mobility via the formation of A-site cation vacancies and increased the carrier concentration probably through introducing oxygen vacancies in rutile TiO2 during the reduction process. Moreover, the additional phonon scattering provided by the interface between the second phase and matrix and oxygen vacancies decreased the thermal conductivity. When the TiO2 addition ratio was optimized to 25 wt%, a large power factor of 1.66 mW/K2/m and the ZT value of 0.24 were achieved at 447 K. The present strategy in this work may be feasible to broaden the range of operating temperature of SrTiO3-based oxide thermoelectric materials.

Abstract:Crystal structure and thermoelectric properties of Nb5+- and Ln3+-(rare earth: La3+, Nd3+, Sm3+, and Gd3+) doped SrO(SrTiO3)n (n=1,2) ceramics, which were fabricated by conventional hot-pressing, were measured to clarify the effects of Ti4+- and Sr2+-site substitution on the thermoelectric properties. The thermal conductivities are very close between the n=1 and 2 phases either doped with Nb5+ or Ln3+ and decreased by ∼60% at room temperature and ∼30% at 1000 K as compared to that of SrTiO3, which is likely due to an enhanced phonon scattering at the SrO/(SrTiO3)n (n=1,2) interfaces. The density of states effective mass md∗ (1.8–2.4 m0) and consequently the Seebeck coefficient |S| in Nb5+-doped samples are fairly smaller than those reported for SrTiO3, which probably resulted from a deterioration of DOS due to the formation of the singly degenerate a1g (Ti 3dxy) orbital as the conduction band bottom, which should be induced by the distortion of TiO6 octahedra in (SrTiO3)n layers. However, in the Ln3+-doped SrO(SrTiO3)2, the TiO6 octahedra were found to be restored, in contrast to the Nb5+-doped, with a gradually increasing O–Ti–O bond angle in the (100) plane at high temperatures, which would lead to the formation of triply degenerate Ti 3d-t2g (dxy, dyz, and dxz) orbitals to cause a significant enhancement in md∗ (∼7.5 m0 at 1000 K) and consequently in |S|. Accordingly, the maximum dimensionless figure of merit ZT∼0.24 obtained in 5%-Gd3+-doped SrO(SrTiO3)2 at 1000 K is about 70% larger than that of Nb-doped SrO(SrTiO3)2 (ZT1000 K∼0.14).

Abstract:Effect of crystal size distribution on thermoelectric performance of Lanthanum-doped strontium titanate (La-SrTiO3) ceramics are investigated in this study. Thermoelectric performance measurement, coupled with microstructure studies, shows that the electrical conductivity strongly depends on the crystal size, potential barrier on the grain boundary and porosity. Meantime, because the average potential barriers height are increased along with the reduction of crystal size, the Seebeck coefficients are increased by energy filtering effect at the large number of grain boundaries. As a result, by controlling of crystal size distribution, ZT value of La-SrTiO3 is improved.
Stable cubic crystal structure and optimized thermoelectric performance of SrTiO3 based ceramics driven by entropy engineering

Abstract:SrTiO3 based perovskites show great potential as n-type thermoelectric (TE) materials, but maintaining the good electrical properties while reducing lattice thermal conductivity is challenging. Entropy engineering could be a promising way to synergistically regulate the electrical and thermal transport in order to improve the thermoelectric performance of SrTiO3 based ceramics. In this work, the single cubic structured Sr0.9-xBaxLa0.1Ti0.9Nb0.1O3-δ (x = 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5) is designed by the calculations of Goldschmidt's tolerance factor, ionic radius difference and detailed thermodynamic process and successfully synthesized by solid state reaction. The single cubic structure and homogenous element distribution are confirmed by Rietveld refinement of XRD and EDS mapping. Oxygen deficiency and high crystal symmetry lead to good electrical properties derived by the effect of configurational entropy, which results to high power factor, PF = 602.1μW‧m-1K-2. The enhanced point defect and local disorder scattering is the dominant factor to significantly reduce the lattice thermal conductivity, especially for large mass fluctuation driven by increasing of point defects, which is a typical result of entropy effects. As the result, the lowest lattice thermal conductivity of 2.93 W‧m-1K-1 at 923 K is achieved for the Sr0.4Ba0.5La0.1Ti0.9Nb0.1O3-δ sample. By the synergistic optimization of entropy engineering, a highest zT value, 0.15, is achieved for x = 0.2 sample at 973 K. The estimated corresponding optimized configurational entropy ranges 9-10 J mol-1K-1. Besides, Vickers hardness of 7-11GPa is also measured for all samples. Henceforth, entropy engineering is a promising method for optimizing thermoelectric and mechanical performance for SrTiO3 based ceramics, which opens a new way to design thermoelectric oxide materials with good electrical properties and low lattice thermal conductivity.

Abstract:Donor-doped strontium titanate (SrTiO3) is one of the most promising n-type oxide thermoelectric materials. Routine doping of La at Sr site can change the charge scattering mechanism, and meanwhile can significantly increase the power factor in the temperature range of 423–773 K. In addition, the introduction of Sc partially substitutes Sr, thus further increasing the electron concentration and optimizing the electrical transport properties. Moreover, the excess Sc in the form of Sc2O3 composite suppresses multifrequency phonon transport, leading to low thermal conductivity of κ = 3.78 W·m−1·K−1 at 773 K for sample Sr0.88La0.06Sc0.06TiO3 with the highest doping content. Thus, the thermoelectric performance of SrTiO3 can be significantly enhanced by synergistic optimization of electrical transport and thermal transport properties via cation doping and composite engineering.

Abstract:A series of Sr0.7Ba0.3Nb2O6−δ/x wt. % Ti (x = 1, 3, 5, and 10) composite ceramic thermoelectric materials were prepared, and the mechanism for improving their thermoelectric properties was explored. The experimental results demonstrate that nano-additive titanium powder undergoes oxidation to form TiO2 during sintering. However, under annealing in a reducing atmosphere, oxidation reactions further deplete the lattice oxygen, leading to an increased generation of oxygen vacancies and enhanced carrier concentration, ultimately leading to successful resistivity reduction. The samples consistently exhibit low thermal conductivity values below 2.0 W m−1 K−1 due to crystal defects, complex structure, and phonon scattering at the grain boundaries. The sample doped with 5 wt. %. Ti exhibits the lowest resistivity and highest PF value (409.3 μW/m K2 at 1073 K). Consequently, the figure of merit of Sr0.7Ba0.3Nb2O6−δ with 5 wt. % Ti attains its maximum value of 0.30 at 1073 K, representing a 50% increase compared to that of the undoped sample Sr0.7Ba0.3Nb2O6−δ (0.20 at 1073 K).

Abstract:We report the thermoelectric properties of Nb-doped (Nd0.55Li0.36)TiO3 bulk ceramics prepared by the conventional sintering method. Superlattice structure present throughout the crystalline grain was observed and a glass-like thermal conductivity (similar to 2 W/m.K) was obtained. The electrical properties of (Nd0.55Li0.36)TiO3 were improved due to the Ti-site-Nb-doping. The low solid solubility of Nb and the distortion of TiO6 octahedron impaired the electrical performance of Nb-doped (Nd0.55Li0.36)TiO3. The sample with 5 at% Nb gave the maximum ZT value of 0.05 at 650 K. This work is helpful for the design of novel oxide thermoelectric materials. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The development of new high-performance thermoelectric (TE) materials has been garnering significant attention from both the academic communities and industrial fields. Owing to its abundance, eco-friendliness, low cost, and non-toxicity, the oxide CaTiO3 can be considered as a promising high-temperature TE material for large-scale applications. In this regard, this study successfully transformed the insulating CaTiO3 ceramic into a TE material with outstanding TE properties by substituting Ca2+ with La3+ and generating stable oxygen vacancies. The excellent performance of the La-doped samples is mainly attributed to the synergistic effect of La doping and stable oxygen vacancies, which lead to a deeper Fermi energy level and increased density of states. As a result, the power factor was significantly enhanced over a broad temperature range. Coupled with the decreased thermal conductivity resulting from the generated point defects and nano-precipitates to scatter phonons, the desired zT value of 0.4 at 1011 K for bulk Ca0.8La0.2TiO3 was achieved, which was 470% higher than that of pristine bulk CaTiO3. Therefore, our discovery can spark new routes to obtain high-performance TE ceramics and improve their TE performance by introducing dopants and oxygen vacancies.

Abstract:Silicon germanium (SiGe) alloys hold promise for thermoelectric power generation at high temperatures and have been applied in deep-space missions. However, enhancement of the dimensionless thermoelectric figure-of-merit (ZT) is still needed for practical civil applications of SiGe. In this work, we report high-performance oxide/SiGe bulk composites, that were obtained via hot- pressing sintering of mixed powder composed of phosphorus (P) doped SiGe prepared via mechanical alloying, using a ball milling technique and La-Nb-doped SrTiO3 (La-Nb-STO). The La-Nb-STO powder was obtained from ball milling of a bulk La-Nb-STO sample that was sintered via hot pressing of hydrothermally synthesized La-Nb-STO powder. Controlling the amount of La-Nb-STO nanoparticles added to SiGe matrix increased the power factor by optimizing the electron concentration and mobility in the composite. In addition, compared with single-phase P-doped SiGe, the second phase decreased the thermal conductivity because of additional phonon scattering at the interface. As a result, a high ZT of 0.91 was realized in the n-type oxide/SiGe bulk composite at 1000 K, which was 18% larger than for the typical materials used in space flight missions, and 5% higher than the single-phase SiGe alloys obtained in present study. The strategy used in this study could also be viable to further enhance the ZT of nanostructured n-type SiGe and SrTiO3-based oxide materials.

Abstract:Single-phase polycrystalline La x Sr 1− x TiO 3 ( x = 0, 0.04, 0.06, 0.08, and 0.12) ceramics were prepared by the conventional solid-state reaction method using high-activity hydroxides as the raw materials. The electrical conductivity of all the samples increased with increasing x value and decreased with measurement temperature, while the thermal conductivity decreased with increasing x value and measurement temperature. The La 0.12 Sr 0.88 TiO 3 sample showed the lowest thermal conductivity of 2.45 W m −1 K −1 at 873 K and the largest ZT of 0.28 at 773 K. The present work revealed that hydroxides with high activity as raw materials are beneficial to improve the thermoelectric properties, especially to decrease the thermal conductivity.

Abstract:Herein, ZnO is used as the matrix while La as the doping element, and the band structure of the oxide system is calculated by first-principles. The La doped series oxides are synthesized by powder-metallurgy method. The first-principles calculation results show that La doping can converge the energy band and significantly increase the density of states near the Fermi level, enhanced by the hybridization between d-orbits of La atoms and d-orbits of Zn atoms and p-orbits of O atoms. With the increase of La element content, the electrical conductivity of the oxide gradually increases, and the Seebeck coefficient decreases to a certain extent, which is consistent with the first - principle calculation. As the doping of La element increases, the thermal conductivity of the oxide has been greatly reduced, resulting in a substantial improvement in the thermoelectric properties of the oxide. The best ZT value of ∼ 0.401 (873 K) can be obtained through proper amount of La doping ( x = 0.04), which is ∼ 4.09 times as ∼ 0.098 of the pristine oxide ZnO at the same temperature.

Abstract:The electronic structure and thermoelectric properties of Bi3+-doped (Sr0.889-xLa0.111Bix)TiO2.963 were studied by the first principles method. Doping Bi3+ can increase the cell parameters, cell asymmetry and band gap. With increasing Bi3+ content, the asymmetry of DOS relative to the Fermi level increases, which results in an enhanced Seebeck coefficient, increasing carrier mobility and decreasing carrier concentration. An appropriate Bi3+-doping concentration (7.4–14.8%) can increase the lattice distortion and reduce the lattice thermal conductivity of the material. An appropriate Bi3+-doping concentration (7.4%) can effectively optimize the electrical transport performance and improve the thermoelectric properties of strontium titanate. The optimal Bi3+-doping concentration is 7.4%, and Sr0.815La0.111Bi0.074TiO2.963 obtains a maximum ZT of 0.48. This work shows the mechanism of Bi3+ doping in enhancing the thermoelectric properties of strontium titanate.
