Abstract:We state and prove a form of Bott periodicity (for $U(n)$) in an algebraic setting (so, $GL(n)$) which makes sense over $\mathbb{Z}$, which also specializes to Bott periodicity in the usual sense (hence giving yet another proof of classical Bott periodicity).

Abstract:We give a proof of Bott periodicity for real graded $C^\ast$-algebras in terms of K- theory and E-theory. Guentner and Higson proved a similar result in the complex graded case but we extend this to cover all graded $C^\ast$-algebras. We obtain the 8-fold periodicity in E-theory by constructing two maps that are inverse to each other.

Abstract: We prove a conjecture of Griffiths on simultaneous normalization of all periods which asserts that the image of the lifted period map on the universal cover lies in a bounded domain in a complex Euclidean space. As an application we prove that the Teichm\"uller spaces of a large class of projective manifolds have complex affine structures.

Abstract:We define the geometric complex associated to a Morse-Bott-Smale vector field, cf. [Austin-Braam, 1995], and its associated spectral sequence. We prove an extension of the Bismut-Zhang theorem to Morse-Bott-Smale functions. The proof is based on the Bismut-Zhang theorem for Morse-Smale functions, see [Bismut-Zhang, 1992].

Abstract:In this short note, we use Robert Bruner's $\mathcal{A}(1)$-resolution of $P = \mathbb{F}_2[t]$ to shed light on the Hit Problem. In particular, the reduced syzygies $P_n$ of $P$ occur as direct summands of $\widetilde{P}^{\otimes n}$, where $\widetilde{P}$ is the augmentation ideal of the map $P \to \mathbb{F}_2$. The complement of $P_n$ in $\widetilde{P}^{\otimes n}$ is free, and the modules $P_n$ exhibit a type of "Bott Periodicity" of period $4$: $P_{n+4} = \Sigma^8P_n$. These facts taken together allow one to analyze the module of indecomposables in $\widetilde{P}^{\otimes n}$, that is, to say something about the "$\mathcal{A}(1)$-hit Problem." Our study is essentially in two parts: First, we expound on the approach to the Hit Problem begun by William Singer, in which we compare images of Steenrod Squares to certain kernels of Squares. Using this approach, the author discovered a nontrivial element in bidegree $(5, 9)$ that is neither $\mathcal{A}(1)$-hit nor in $\mathrm{ker} Sq^1 + \mathrm{ker} Sq^3$. Such an element is extremely rare, but Bruner's result shows clearly why these elements exist and detects them in full generality. Second, we describe the graded $\mathbb{F}_2$-space of $\mathcal{A}(1)$-hit elements of $\widetilde{P}^{\otimes n}$ by determining its Hilbert series.

Abstract:We construct an explicit basis for the coordinate ring of the Bott-Samelson variety Z_i associated to G = GL(n) and an arbitrary sequence of simple reflections i. Our basis is parametrized by certain standard tableaux and generalizes the Standard Monomial basis for Schubert varieties. Our standard tableaux have a natural crystal graph structure.

Abstract:In this paper, under some regularity conditions, we prove a period relation between the Betti--Whittaker periods associated to a regular algebraic cuspidal automorphic representation of ${\rm GL}_n(\mathbb{A})$ and its contragredient. As a consequence, we obtain the trivialness of the relative period associated to a regular algebraic cuspidal automorphic representation of ${\rm GL}_{2n}(\mathbb{A})$ of orthogonal type, which implies the algebraicity of the ratios of successive critical $L$-values for ${\rm GSpin}_{2n}^* \times {\rm GL}_{n'}$ by the result of Harder and Raghuram.

Abstract:A bottleneck of a smooth algebraic variety $X \subset \mathbb{C}^n$ is a pair of distinct points $(x,y) \in X$ such that the Euclidean normal spaces at $x$ and $y$ contain the line spanned by $x$ and $y$. The narrowness of bottlenecks is a fundamental complexity measure in the algebraic geometry of data. In this paper we study the number of bottlenecks of affine and projective varieties, which we call the bottleneck degree. The bottleneck degree is a measure of the complexity of computing all bottlenecks of an algebraic variety, using for example numerical homotopy methods. We show that the bottleneck degree is a function of classical invariants such as Chern classes and polar classes. We give the formula explicitly in low dimension and provide an algorithm to compute it in the general case.

Abstract:In this paper, we revise the Bott Vanishing on projective toric varieties by giving it an alternative proof with a condition that is compatible with the condition of Kawamata-Viehweg Vanishing. This proof can also be adapted to generalize Bott Vanishing to the setting using mixed Hodge modules. Lastly, we give a counter-example towards the relative Bott Vanishing for birational morphisms.

Abstract:In this paper we prove a conjecture of Griffiths about vanishing of the zeroth cohomology groups of locally homogeneous vector bundles on compact quotients of non-classical period domains, and construct a new $G_\R$-invariant complex structure on any non-classical period domain $D=G_\R/V$ with $G_\R$ of Hermitian type. Various geometric and algebraic characterizations of non-classical period domains and several geometric applications on their compact quotients are deduced as consequences of our results.

Abstract:In this note, we present a topological proof of the generalized Lelong-Poincaré formula. More precisely, when the zero locus of a section has a pure codimension equal to the rank of a holomorphic vector bundle, the top Chern class of the vector bundle corresponds to the cycle class of the schematic zero locus of the section in complex Bott-Chern cohomology.

Abstract:Thomason's étale descent theorem for Bott periodic algebraic $K$-theory \cite{aktec} is generalized to any $MGL$ module over a regular Noetherian scheme of finite dimension. Over arbitrary Noetherian schemes of finite dimension, this generalizes the analog of Thomason's theorem for Weibel's homotopy $K$-theory. This is achieved by amplifying the effects from the case of motivic cohomology, using the slice spectral sequence in the case of the universal example of algebraic cobordism. We also obtain integral versions of these statements: Bousfield localization at étale motivic cohomology is the universal way to impose étale descent for these theories. As applications, we describe the étale local objects in modules over these spectra and show that they satisfy the full six functor formalism, construct an étale descent spectral sequence converging to Bott-inverted motivic Landweber exact theories, and prove cellularity and effectivity of the étale versions of these motivic spectra.

Closed Form of the Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff Formula for the Generators of Semisimple Complex Lie Algebras

Abstract:Recently it has been introduced an algorithm Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff (BCH) formula, which extends the Van-Brunt and Visser recent results, leading to new closed forms of BCH formula. More recently, it has been shown that there are {\it 13 types} of such commutator algebras. We show, by providing the explicit solutions, that these include the generators of the semisimple complex Lie algebras. More precisely, for any pair, $X$, $Y$ of the Cartan-Weyl basis, we find $W$, linear combination of $X$, $Y$, such that $$ \exp(X) \exp(Y)=\exp(W) $$ The derivation of such closed forms follows, in part, by using the above mentioned recent results. The complete derivation is provided by considering the structure of of the root system. Furthermore, if $X$, $Y$ and $Z$ are three generators of the Cartan-Weyl basis, we find, for a wide class of cases, $W$, linear combination of $X$, $Y$ and $Z$, such that $$ \exp(X) \exp(Y) \exp(Z)=\exp(W) $$ It turns out that the relevant commutator algebras are {\it type 1c-i}, {\it type 4} and {\it type 5}. A key result concerns an iterative application of the algorithm leading to relevant extensions of the cases admitting closed forms of the BCH formula. Here we provide the main steps of such an iteration that will be developed in a forthcoming paper.

Abstract:We prove an existence theorem for dualizing complexes over noncommutative noetherian complete semilocal algebras, which generalizes Van den Bergh's existence theorem in the graded case. Using the dualizing complex, noncommutative versions of Bass theorem and the no-holes theorem are proved. We also prove that noetherian complete semilocal algebras satisfying polynomial identities are catenary.

Abstract:We address the general problem of studying linear stability and bifurcations of periodic orbits for Hamiltonian systems of arbitrary degrees of freedom. We study the topology of the GIT sequence introduced by the first author and Urs frauenfelder, in arbitrary dimension. In particular, we note that the combinatorics encoding the linear stability of periodic orbits is governed by a quotient of the associahedron. Our approach gives a topological/combinatorial proof of the classical Krein--Moser theorem, and refines it for the case of symmetric orbits.

On Bott--Samelson rings for Coxeter groups

Abstract:We study the cohomology ring of the Bott--Samelson variety. We compute an explicit presentation of this ring via Soergel's result, which implies that it is a combinatorial invariant. We use the presentation to introduce the Bott--Samelson ring associated with a word in arbitrary Coxeter system by generators and relations. In general, it is a split quadratic complete intersection algebra with a triangular pattern of relations. By a result of Tate, it follows that it is a Koszul algebra and we provide a quadratic (reduced) Gr{ö}bner basis. Furthermore, we prove that it satisfies the whole Kähler package, including the Poincaré duality, the hard Lefschetz theorem, and the Hodge--Riemann bilinear relations.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce a class of twisted matrix algebras of $M_2(E)$ and twisted direct products of $E\times E$ for an algebra $E$. Let $A$ be a noetherian Koszul Artin-Schelter regular algebra, $z\in A_2$ be a regular central element of $A$ and $B=A_P[y_1,y_2;\sigma]$ be a graded double Ore extension of $A$. We use the Clifford deformation $C_{A^!}(z)$ of Koszul dual $A^!$ to study the noncommutative quadric hypersurface $B/(z+y_1^2+y_2^2)$. We prove that the stable category of graded maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules over $B/(z+y_1^2+y_2^2)$ is equivalent to certain bounded derived categories, which involve a twisted matrix algebra of $M_2(C_{A^!}(z))$ or a twisted direct product of $C_{A^!}(z)\times C_{A^!}(z)$ depending on the values of $P$. These results are presented as skew versions of Knörrer's periodicity theorem. Moreover, we show $B/(z+y_1^2+y_2^2)$ may not be a noncommutative graded isolated singularity even if $A/(z)$ is.
