Abstract: We prove a conjecture of Griffiths on simultaneous normalization of all periods which asserts that the image of the lifted period map on the universal cover lies in a bounded domain in a complex Euclidean space. As an application we prove that the Teichm\"uller spaces of a large class of projective manifolds have complex affine structures.

Abstract:We consider the deformations of complex orbifolds with the underlying smooth structures being fixed. As a corollary, we can prove that the deformations of a Calabi-Yau orbifold is unobstructed by using standard arguments. Then we consider the period map for a family of complex Kähler orbifolds. We prove that the period map is holomorphic, horizontal and consistent with our Kodaira-Spencer map.

Abstract:In this paper, we review our recent results and the methods of proofs in [15] in which it is proved that the Hodge metric completion of the moduli space of polarized and marked Calabi-Yau manifolds, i.e. the Torelli space, is a complex affine manifold. As applications it is proved that the period map from the Torelli space and the extended period map from its completion space, both are injective into the period domain, and that the period map from the moduli space of polarized Calabi-Yau manifolds with level m structure is also injective.

Abstract: We prove the existence of global sections trivializing the Hodge bundles on the Hodge metric completion space of the Torelli space of Calabi--Yau manifolds, a global splitting property of these Hodge bundles. We also prove that a compact Calabi--Yau manifold can not be deformed to its complex conjugate. These results answer certain open questions in the subject. A general result about the period map to be bi-holomorphic from the Hodge metric completion space of the Torelli space of Calabi--Yau type manifolds to their period domains is proved and applied to the cases of K$3$ surfaces, cubic fourfolds, and hyperk\"ahler manifolds.

Abstract:For certain complex projective manifolds (such as K3 surfaces and their higher dimensional analogues, the complex symplectic projective manifolds) the period map takes values in a locally symmetric variety of type IV. It is often an open embedding and in such cases it has been observed that the image is the complement of a locally symmetric divisor. We explain that phenomenon and get our hands on the complementary divisor in terms of geometric data.

Abstract:We study the behavior of the superperiod map near the boundary of the moduli space of stable supercurves and prove that it is similar to the behavior of periods of classical curves. We consider two applications to the geometry of this moduli space in genus $2$, denoted as $\bar{\mathcal S}_2$. First, we characterize the canonical projection of $\bar{\mathcal S}_2$ in terms of its behavior near the boundary, proving in particular that $\bar{\mathcal S}_2$ is not projected. Secondly, we combine the information on superperiods with the explicit calculation of genus $2$ Mumford isomorphism, due to Witten, to study the expansion of the superstring measure for genus $2$ near the boundary. We also present the proof, due to Deligne, of regularity of the superstring measure on $\bar{\mathcal S}_g$ for any genus.

Abstract:In [HLY1], Hosono, Lian, and Yau gave a conjectural characterization of the set of solutions to certain Gelfand-Kapranov-Zelevinsky hypergeometric equations which are realized as periods of Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces in a Gorenstein Fano toric variety X. We prove this conjecture in the case where X is a complex projective space.

Abstract:In this paper we prove a conjecture of Griffiths about vanishing of the zeroth cohomology groups of locally homogeneous vector bundles on compact quotients of non-classical period domains, and construct a new $G_\R$-invariant complex structure on any non-classical period domain $D=G_\R/V$ with $G_\R$ of Hermitian type. Various geometric and algebraic characterizations of non-classical period domains and several geometric applications on their compact quotients are deduced as consequences of our results.

Abstract:We study periods in an integral basis near all possible singularities in one-dimensional complex structure moduli spaces of Calabi-Yau threefolds. Near large complex structure points these asymptotic periods are well understood in terms of the topological data of the mirror Calabi-Yau manifold. The aim of this work is to characterize the period data near other boundaries in moduli space such as conifold and K-points. Using results from Hodge theory, we provide the general form of these periods in a quantized three-cycle basis. Based on these periods we compute the prepotential and related physical couplings of the underlying supergravity theory. Moreover, we elucidate the meaning of the model-dependent coefficients that appear in these expressions: these can be identified with certain topological and arithmetic numbers associated to the singular geometry at the moduli space boundary. We illustrate our findings by studying a wide set of examples.

Abstract:We present a method for computing the generic degree of a period map defined on a quasi-projective surface. As an application, we explicitly compute the generic degree of three period maps underlying families of Calabi-Yau 3-folds coming from toric hypersurfaces. As a consequence, we show that the generic Torelli theorem holds for these cases.

Abstract:The period map for cubic fourfolds takes values in a locally symmetric variety of orthogonal type of dimension 20. We determine the image of this period map (thus confirming a conjecture of Hassett) and give at the same time a new proof of the theorem of Voisin that asserts that this period map is an open embedding. An algebraic version of our main result is an identification of the algebra of SL (6,ℂ)-invariant polynomials on the representation space Sym 3 (ℂ 6 ) * with a certain algebra of meromorphic automorphic forms on a symmetric domain of orthogonal type of dimension 20. We also describe the stratification of the moduli space of semistable cubic fourfolds in terms of a Vinberg-Dynkin diagram.
