Abstract:The path integral for ghost fermions, which is heuristically made use of in the Batalin- Fradkin-Vilkovisky approach to quantization of constrained systems, is derived from first principles. The derivation turns out to be rather different from that of physical fermions since the definition of Dirac states for ghost fermions is subtle. With these results at hand, it is then shown that the nonminimal extension of the Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin operator must be chosen differently from the notorious choice made in the literature in order to avoid the boundary terms that have always plagued earlier treatments. Furthermore it is pointed out that the elimination of states with nonzero ghost number requires the introduction of a thermodynamic potential for ghosts; the reason is that Schwarz's Lefschetz formula for the partition function of the time- evolution operator is not capable, despite claims to the contrary, to get rid of nonzero ghost number states on its own. Finally, we comment on the problems of global topological nature that one faces in the attempt to obtain the solutions of the Dirac condition for physical states in a configuration space of nontrivial geometry; such complications give rise to anomalies that do not obey the Wess-Zumino consistency conditions.
Quantizable Ghost-ridden theories using Kinetic Positivity Constraints

Abstract:We present a novel way to constrain the ghost field with respect to other physical fields present in a given theory such that the theory becomes quantizable. This is achieved by imposing positivity of the total kinetic energy of the system and performing Lorentz transformations in the field space manifold to arrive at an effective Lagrangian containing only physical degrees of freedom. Since models containing ghost fields such as quintom models are relevant in the cosmological context, this method can help ensure that such theories don't violate unitarity and can be treated as realistic candidates without the need to completely eliminate ghost(s).

Design and Tests of the Silicon Sensors for the ZEUS Micro Vertex Detector

Abstract:To fully exploit the HERA-II upgrade,the ZEUS experiment has installed a Micro Vertex Detector (MVD) using n-type, single-sided, silicon micro-strip sensors with capacitive charge division. The sensors have a readout pitch of 120 micrometers, with five intermediate strips (20 micrometer strip pitch). The designs of the silicon sensors and of the test structures used to verify the technological parameters, are presented. Results on the electrical measurements are discussed. A total of 1123 sensors with three different geometries have been produced by Hamamatsu Photonics K.K. Irradiation tests with reactor neutrons and Co-60 photons have been performed for a small sample of sensors. The results on neutron irradiation (with a fluence of 1 x 10^{13} 1 MeV equivalent neutrons / cm^2) are well described by empirical formulae for bulk damage. The Co-60 photons (with doses up to 2.9 kGy) show the presence of generation currents in the SiO_2-Si interface, a large shift of the flatband voltage and a decrease of the hole mobility.

Abstract:Ghosts have been a stumbling block in the development of a UV complete quantum field theory for gravity. We discuss how difficulties associated with ghosts are overcome in the context of 0+1d QFT. Obtaining a probability interpretation is the key issue, and for this we discuss how an appropriate inner product can be constructed to define a sensible Born rule. Ghost theories are intrinsically unitary and perturbatively stable. They can also display nonperburbative stability even when the corresponding normal theory does not. The spectra and propagators are numerically obtained at both weak and strong coupling. Normalizable wave functions are obtained for the energy eigenstates and they show a violation of normal parity. We discuss connections to PT-symmetric quantum mechanics.

Abstract:We suggest and briefly review a new sort of superrenormalizable models of higher derivative quantum gravity. The higher derivative terms in the action can be introduced in such a way that all the unphysical massive states have complex poles. According to the literature on Lee–Wick quantization, in this case the theory can be formulated as unitary, since all massive ghosts-like degrees of freedom are unstable.

Abstract:We formulate minimal SuperGeometric Quantum Field Theories (SG-QFTs) that allow for scalar-fermion field transformations in a manifestly reparameterisation covariant manner. First, we discuss the issue of uniqueness in defining the field-space supermetric of the underlying supermanifold, and clarify the fact that different supermetric definitions can lead to distinct theories in the off-shell kinematic region. By adopting natural choices for the field-space supermetric, we~then show that scalar fields alone cannot induce a non-trivial field-space Riemannian curvature in the fermionic sector, beyond the one originating from the scalar part of the theory. We~present for the first time minimal SG-QFT models that feature non-zero fermionic curvature both in two and four spacetime dimensions. Physical applications of SG-QFTs are discussed.

Abstract:A higher derivative term is introduced in the kinetic energy of the Higgs lagrangian in the minimal Standard Model. A logically consistent and finite field theory is obtained when some excitations of the Higgs field are quantized with indefinite metric in the Hilbert space. The Landau ghost phenomenon of the conventional triviality problem is replaced by the state vectors of a complex ghost pair at a finite mass scale with observable physical consequences. It is shown that the ghost states exhibit unusual resonance properties and correspond to a complex conjugate pair of Pauli-Villars regulator masses in the euclidean path integral formulation of the theory. An argument is given that microscopic acausality effects associated with the ghost pair remain undetectable in scattering processes with realistic wave packets, and the S-matrix should exhibit unitarity in the observable sector of the Hilbert space.

Abstract:We study the Faddeev-Popov ghost sector of asymptotically safe quantum gravity, which becomes non-perturbative in the ultraviolet. We point out that nonzero matter-ghost couplings and higher-order ghost self-interactions exist at a non-Gaussian fixed point for the gravitational couplings, i.e., in the ultraviolet. Thus the ghost sector in this non-perturbative ultraviolet completion does not keep the structure of a simple Faddeev-Popov determinant. We discuss implications of the new ghost couplings for the Renormalization Group flow in gravity, the form of the ultraviolet completion, and the relevant couplings, i.e., free parameters, of the theory.

Supersymmetric Quantum Fields via Quantum Probability

Abstract:The super version of imprimitivity theorem is available now to describe global supersymmetry of systems using the representations of super Lie groups (SLG). This result uses the equivalence between super Harish- Chandra pairs and super Lie groups at the categorigal level and is applicable to super Poincare group and generalizes a smooth SI to super context. We apply the result to build supersymmetric quantum fields. Towards this end, we set up a super fock space of a disjoint union of super Hilbert spaces which is equivalent to super tensoring of boson (even) part symmetrically and that of fermion (odd) part antisymmetrically of the super particle Hilbert space. This leads to a super fock space that is disjoint union of bosonic and fermionic spaces, that is Z2 graded. We derive covariant Weyl operators for light-like fields, with the massless super spinorial multiplet as an illustrative example. First, we build a representation of a light-like little group in terms of Weyl operators. We then use this construction to induce a representation of Poincare group to construct the fields via super version of imprimitivity theorem.

Normal bound states out of massive complex ghosts degrees of freedom in superrenormalizable quantum gravity theories

Abstract:One of the remarkable differences between renormalizable quantum gravity with four-derivative action and its superrenormalizable polynomial generalizations is that the latter admit a more sophisticated particle mass spectrum. Already in the simplest superrenormalizable case, the theory has a six-derivative Lagrangian, admitting either a real or complex spectrum of masses. In the case of a real spectrum, there are the graviton, massive unphysical ghosts, and normal particles with masses exceeding the ones of the ghosts. It is also possible to have pairs of complex conjugate massive ghost-like particles. We show that in both cases, these theories do not admit a Källén-Lehmann representation and do not satisfy the positivity criterium of consistency. In the main part of the work, using a relatively simple Euclidean scalar toy model, we show that the theory with complex spectrum forms bound states confining unphysical massive excitations into a normal composite particle. Finally, we discuss the cosmological implications of such a ghost confinement.

Nonpropagating ghost in covariant $f(Q)$ gravity

Abstract:$f(Q)$ gravity is an extension of the symmetric teleparallel equivalent to general relativity (STEGR). This work shows that based on the scalar-nonmetricity formulation, a scalar mode in $f(Q)$ gravity has a negative kinetic energy. This conclusion holds regardless of the coincident gauge frequently used in STEGR and $f(Q)$ gravity. To study the scalar mode, we further consider the covariant $f(Q)$ gravity as a special class in higher-order scalar tensor (HOST) theory and rewrite the four scalar fields, which play a role of the Stüeckelberg fields associated with the diffeomorphism, by vector fields. Applying the standard Arnowitt-Deser-Misner (ADM) formulation to the new formulation of the $f(Q)$ gravity, we demonstrate that the ghost scalar mode can be eliminated by the second-class constraints, thus ensuring that $f(Q)$ gravity is a healthy theory.

Quantization of Weyl invariant unimodular gravity with antisymmetric ghost fields

Abstract:The enforcement of the unimodularity condition in a gravity theory by means of a Lagrange multiplier leads, in general, to inconsistencies upon quantization. This is so, in particular, when the classic linear splitting of the metric between the background and quantum fields is used. To avoid the need of introducing such a Lagrange multiplier while using the classic linear splitting, we carry out the quantization of unimodular gravity with extra Weyl symmetry by using Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) techniques. Here, two gauge symmetries are to be gauge-fixed: transverse diffeomorphisms and Weyl transformations. We perform the gauge-fixing of the transverse diffeomorphism invariance by using BRST transformations that involve antisymmetric ghost fields. We show that these BRST transformations are compatible with the BRST transformations needed to gauge-fix the Weyl symmetry, so that they can be combined in a set of transformations generated by a single BRST operator. Newton's law of gravitation is derived within the BRST formalism we put forward as well as the Slavnov-Taylor equation.

Abstract:We explore supersymmetric quantum quenches of the mass and coupling constants in the $ \mathcal{N} $ = 1 supersymmetric vector model using Hartree-Fock approximation. We find that in the case of the free fermionic field, quench of the mass generates singularity localized at the instant of sudden change and we point out the essential role of the parity of spacetime. Focusing on a supersymmetric generalization of the ϕ 6 model and using stationary phase approximation, we demonstrate that supersymmetry is broken in the asymptotic state that emerges at late times after the quench. Finally, we confirm SUSY breaking in the time-dependent setting by integrating numerically the exact equations of motion from the instant of the quench into asymptotic regime. The breaking of supersymmetry cannot be directly attributed to the thermal physics since to leading order in the Hartree-Fock approximation the model is integrable and therefore thermalization does not occur.

Abstract:This work is a generalization of \cite{baldiotti2021} to Grassmann algebras of arbitrary dimensions. Here we present a covariant quantization scheme for pseudoclassical theories focused on non-hermitian quantum mechanics. The quantization maps canonically related pseudoclassical theories to equivalent quantum realizations in arbitrary dimensions. We apply the formalism to the problem of two coupled spins with Heisenberg interaction.

Abstract:Supergeometric Quantum Field Theories (SG-QFTs) are theories that go beyond the standard supersymmetric framework, since they allow for general scalar-fermion field transformations on the configuration space of a supermanifold, without requiring an equality between bosonic and fermionic degrees of freedom. After revisiting previous considerations, we extend them by calculating the one-loop effective action of minimal SG-QFTs that feature non-zero fermionic curvature in two and four spacetime dimensions. By employing an intuitive approach to the Schwinger-DeWitt heat-kernel technique and a novel field-space generalised Clifford algebra, we derive the ultra-violet structure of characteristic effective-field-theory (EFT) operators up to four spacetime derivatives that emerge at the one-loop order and are of physical interest. Upon minimising the impact of potential ambiguities due to the so-called multiplicative anomalies, we find that the EFT interactions resulting from the one-loop supergeometric effective action are manifestly diffeomorphically invariant in configuration space. The extension of our approach to evaluating higher-loops of the supergeometric quantum effective action is described. The emerging landscape of theoretical and phenomenological directions for further research of SG-QFTs is discussed.

Pathological Character of Modifications to Coincident General Relativity: Cosmological Strong Coupling and Ghosts in $f(\Q)$ Theories

Abstract:The intrinsic presence of ghosts in the symmetric teleparallel framework is elucidated. We illustrate our general arguments in $f(\mathbb{Q})$ theories by studying perturbations in the three inequivalent spatially flat cosmologies. Two of these branches exhibit reduced linear spectra, signalling they are infinitely strongly coupled. For the remaining branch we unveil the presence of seven gravitational degrees of freedom and show that at least one of them is a ghost. Our results rule out $f(\mathbb{Q})$ cosmologies and clarify the number of propagating degrees of freedom in these theories.

Abstract:Flux quantization of the C-field in 11d supergravity is arguably necessary for the (UV-)completion of the theory, in that it determines the torsion charges carried by small numbers of M-branes. However, hypotheses about C-field flux-quantization ("models of the C-field") have previously been discussed only in the bosonic sector of 11d supergravity and ignoring the supergravity equations of motion. Here we highlight a duality-symmetric formulation of on-shell 11d supergravity on superspace, observe that this naturally lends itself to completion of the theory by flux quantization, and indeed that 11d super-spacetimes are put on-shell by carrying quantizable duality-symmetric super-C-field flux; the proof of which we present in detail.
