Abstract:The fork is the tree obtained from the claw $K_{1,3}$ by subdividing one of its edges once, and the antifork is its complement graph. We give a complete description of all graphs that do not contain the fork or antifork as induced subgraphs.

Abstract:A hole is an induced cycle of length at least four, and an odd hole is a hole of odd length. A fork is a graph obtained from K1,3 by subdividing an edge once. An odd balloon is a graph obtained from an odd hole by identifying respectively two consecutive vertices with two leaves of K1,3 . A gem is a graph that consists of a P4 plus a vertex adjacent to all vertices of the P4 . A butterfly is a graph obtained from two triangles by sharing exactly one vertex. A graph G is perfectly divisible if for each induced subgraph H of G , V(H) can be partitioned into A and B such that H[A] is perfect and ω(H[B])<ω(H) . In this paper, we show that (fork, odd balloon)-free graphs are perfectly divisible (this generalizes some results of Karthick et al. [11] ). As an application, we show that χ(G)≤(ω(G)+12) if G is (fork, gem)-free or (fork, butterfly)-free.

Abstract:A graph is a ``$k$-Kuratowski graph'' if it has exactly $k$ components, each isomorphic to $K_5$ or to $K_{3,3}$. We prove that if a graph $G$ contains no $k$-Kuratowski graph as a minor,then there is a set $X$ of boundedly many vertices such that $G\setminus X$ can be drawn in a (possibly disconnected) surface in which no $k$-Kuratowski graph can be drawn.

Abstract:We consider the two-pronged fork frame $F$ and the variety $\mathbf{Eq}(B_F)$ generated by its dual closure algebra $B_F$. We describe the finite projective algebras in $\mathbf{Eq}(B_F)$ and give a purely semantic proof that unification in $\mathbf{Eq}(B_F)$ is finitary and not unitary.

Abstract:The long-standing Erdős-Hajnal conjecture states that for every $n$-vertex undirected graph $H$ there exists $\epsilon(H)>0$ such that every graph $G$ that does not contain $H$ as an induced subgraph contains a clique or an independent set of size at least $n^{\epsilon(H)}$. A natural weakening of the conjecture states that the polynomial-size clique/independent set phenomenon occurs if one excludes both $H$ and its complement $H^\mathrm{c}$. These conjectures have been shown to hold for only a handful of graphs: it is not even known if they hold for all graphs on $5$ vertices.In a recent breakthrough, the symmetrized version of the Erdős-Hajnal conjecture was shown to hold for all paths. The goal of this paper is to show that the symmetrized conjecture holds for all trees on $6$ (or fewer) vertices. In fact this is a consequence of showing that the symmetrized conjecture holds for any path with a pendant edge at its third vertex; thus we also give a new infinite family of graphs for which the symmetrized conjecture holds.

Abstract:This thesis is a contribution to the model theory of valued fields. We study forking in valued fields and some of their reducts. We focus particularly on pseudo-local fields, the ultraproducts of residue characteristic zero of the p-adic valued fields. First, we look at the value groups of the valued fields we are interested in, the regular ordered Abelian groups. We establish for these ordered groups a geometric description of forking, as well as a full classification of the global extensions of a given type which are non-forking or invariant. Then, we prove an Ax-Kochen-Ershov principle for forking and dividing in expansions of pure short exact sequences of Abelian structures, as studied by Aschenbrenner-Chernikov-Gehret-Ziegler in their article about distality. This setting applies in particular to the leading-term structure of (expansions of) valued fields. Lastly, we give various sufficient conditions for a parameter set in a Henselian valued field of residue characteristic zero to be an extension base. In particular, we show that forking equals dividing in pseudo-local fields of residue characteristic zero. Additionally, we discuss results by Ealy-Haskell-Simon on forking in separated extensions of Henselian valued fields of residue characteristic zero. We contribute to the question in the setting of Abhyankar extensions, where we show that, with some additional conditions, if a type in a pseudo-local field does not fork, then there exists some global invariant Keisler measure whose support contains that type. This behavior is well-known in pseudo-finite fields.

Abstract:This paper studies the structure of graphs with given tree-width and excluding a fixed complete bipartite subgraph, which generalises the bounded degree setting. We give a new structural description of such graphs in terms of so-called quasi-tree-partitions. We demonstrate the utility of this result through applications to (fractional) clustered colouring. Further generalisations of these structural and colouring results are presented.

Abstract:A parallel minor is obtained from a graph by any sequence of edge contractions and parallel edge deletions. We prove that, for any positive integer k, every internally 4‐connected graph of sufficiently high order contains a parallel minor isomorphic to a variation of K4,k with a complete graph on the vertices of degree k, the k‐partition triple fan with a complete graph on the vertices of degree k, the k‐spoke double wheel, the k‐spoke double wheel with axle, the (2k+1)‐rung Möbius zigzag ladder, the (2k)‐rung zigzag ladder, or Kk. Abstract:An even hole is an induced chordless cycle of even length at least four. A diamond is an induced subgraph isomorphic to K_4-e. We show that graphs without even holes and without diamonds can be decomposed via clique-separators into graphs that have uniformly bounded cliquewidth.

Abstract:Ding (1992) proved that for each integer ${m} \geqslant 0$, and every infinite sequence of finite simple graphs $G_1, G_2, \ldots$, if none of these graphs contains a path of length ${m}$ as a subgraph, then there are indices $i < j$ such that $G_i$ is isomorphic to an induced subgraph of $G_j$. We generalise this result to infinite graphs, possibly with parallel edges and loops.

Abstract:We observe that a simple condition suffices to describes non-forking independence over models in a stable theory. Under mild assumptions, this description can be extended to non-forking independence over algebraically closed subsets, without having to use the full strength of the work of the seminal work of Kim and Pillay. The results in this note (which are surely well-known among most model theorists) essentially use that types over models in a stable theory are stationary.

Abstract:Tutte has described in the book "Connectivity in graphs" a canonical decomposition of any graph into 3-connected components. In this article we translate (using the language of symbolic combinatorics) Tutte's decomposition into a general grammar expressing any family ${\cal G}$ of graphs (with some stability conditions) in terms of the subfamily ${\cal G}_3$ of graphs in ${\cal G}$ that are 3-connected (until now, such a general grammar was only known for the decomposition into $2$-connected components). As a byproduct, our grammar yields an explicit system of equations to express the series counting a (labelled) family of graphs in terms of the series counting the subfamily of $3$-connected graphs. A key ingredient we use is an extension of the so-called dissymmetry theorem, which yields negative signs in the grammar and associated equation system, but has the considerable advantage of avoiding the difficult integration steps that appear with other approaches, in particular in recent work by Giménez and Noy on counting planar graphs. As a main application we recover in a purely combinatorial way the analytic expression found by Giménez and Noy for the series counting labelled planar graphs (such an expression is crucial to do asymptotic enumeration and to obtain limit laws of various parameters on random planar graphs). Besides the grammar, an important ingredient of our method is a recent bijective construction of planar maps by Bouttier, Di Francesco and Guitter. Finally, our grammar applies also to the case of unlabelled structures, since the dissymetry theorem takes symmetries into account. Even if there are still difficulties in counting unlabelled 3-connected planar graphs, we think that our grammar is a promising tool toward the asymptotic enumeration of unlabelled planar graphs, since it circumvents some difficult integral calculations.
