Abstract:We give an example of two JSJ decompositions of a group that are not related by conjugation, conjugation of edge-inclusions, and slide moves. This answers the question of Rips and Sela stated in "Cyclic splittings of finitely presented groups and the canonical JSJ decomposition," Ann. of Math. 146 (1997), 53-109. On the other hand we observe that any two JSJ decompositions of a group are related by an elementary deformation, and that strongly slide-free JSJ decompositions are genuinely unique. These results hold for the decompositions of Rips and Sela, Dunwoody and Sageev, and Fujiwara and Papasoglu, and also for accessible decompositions.

Non-forking independence in stable theories

Abstract:We observe that a simple condition suffices to describes non-forking independence over models in a stable theory. Under mild assumptions, this description can be extended to non-forking independence over algebraically closed subsets, without having to use the full strength of the work of the seminal work of Kim and Pillay. The results in this note (which are surely well-known among most model theorists) essentially use that types over models in a stable theory are stationary.

Abstract:This thesis is a contribution to the model theory of valued fields. We study forking in valued fields and some of their reducts. We focus particularly on pseudo-local fields, the ultraproducts of residue characteristic zero of the p-adic valued fields. First, we look at the value groups of the valued fields we are interested in, the regular ordered Abelian groups. We establish for these ordered groups a geometric description of forking, as well as a full classification of the global extensions of a given type which are non-forking or invariant. Then, we prove an Ax-Kochen-Ershov principle for forking and dividing in expansions of pure short exact sequences of Abelian structures, as studied by Aschenbrenner-Chernikov-Gehret-Ziegler in their article about distality. This setting applies in particular to the leading-term structure of (expansions of) valued fields. Lastly, we give various sufficient conditions for a parameter set in a Henselian valued field of residue characteristic zero to be an extension base. In particular, we show that forking equals dividing in pseudo-local fields of residue characteristic zero. Additionally, we discuss results by Ealy-Haskell-Simon on forking in separated extensions of Henselian valued fields of residue characteristic zero. We contribute to the question in the setting of Abhyankar extensions, where we show that, with some additional conditions, if a type in a pseudo-local field does not fork, then there exists some global invariant Keisler measure whose support contains that type. This behavior is well-known in pseudo-finite fields.

Abstract:We provide a direct connection between the $\mathcal{Z}_{\max}$ (or essential) JSJ decomposition and the Friedl--Tillmann polytope of a hyperbolic two-generator one-relator group with abelianisation of rank $2$. We deduce various structural and algorithmic properties, like the existence of a quadratic-time algorithm computing the \ZC{}-JSJ decomposition of such groups.

On some Fraisse limits with free amalgamation

Abstract:In the first part of this work the notion of stable Kim-forking is discussed and some context on this matter is given. In the second part a general way of building some examples of NSOP1 theories as the limit of some Fraisse class satisfying stronger conditions is given. These limits will satisfy existence, that Kim-independence coincide with algebraic independence, and that forking independence is obtained by forcing base monotonicity on Kim-forking over arbitrary sets. These theories also come with a stationary independence relation. This study is based on the results of Baudisch, Ramsey, Chernikov and Kruckman.

Abstract:A celebrated theorem of Fröberg gives a complete combinatorial classification of quadratic square-free monomial ideals with a linear resolution. A generalization of this theorem to higher degree square-free monomial ideals is an active area of research. The existence of a linear resolution of such ideals often depends on the field over which the polynomial ring is defined. Hence, it is too much to expect that in the higher degree case a linear resolution can be identified purely using a combinatorial feature of an associated combinatorial structure. However, some classes of ideals having linear resolutions have been identified using combinatorial structures. In the present paper, we use the notion of $r$-independence to construct an $r$-uniform hypergraph from the given graph. We then show that when the underlying graph is co-chordal, the corresponding edge ideal is vertex splittable, a condition stronger than having a linear resolution. We use this result to explicitly compute graded Betti numbers for various graph classes. Finally, we give a different proof for the existence of a linear resolution using the topological notion of $r$-collapsibility.

Abstract:We consider the two-pronged fork frame $F$ and the variety $\mathbf{Eq}(B_F)$ generated by its dual closure algebra $B_F$. We describe the finite projective algebras in $\mathbf{Eq}(B_F)$ and give a purely semantic proof that unification in $\mathbf{Eq}(B_F)$ is finitary and not unitary.

Abstract:A group G has property FA if G fixes a point of every tree on which G acts without inversions. We prove that every Coxeter system of finite rank has a visual JSJ decomposition over subgroups with property FA. As an application, we reduce the twist conjecture to Coxeter systems that are indecomposable with respect to amalgamated products over visual subgroups with property FA.

We study how their work relates to forking, and we prove Ax-Kochen-Ershov principles for forking and dividing in this setting.

Abstract:An axiomatic treatment of `independence relations' (notions of independence) for complete first-order theories is presented, the principal examples being forking (due to Shelah) and thorn-forking (due to Onshuus). Thorn-forking is characterised in terms of modular pairs in the lattice of algebraically closed sets. Wherever possible, forking and thorn-forking are treated in a uniform way. They are dual in the sense that forking is the finest (most restrictive) and thorn-forking the coarsest independence relation worth examining. We finish by defining the kernel of a sequence of indiscernibles and studying its relation to canonical bases.

Using conjugation by certain random permutation matrices, we construct random matrix models for graph independence with amalgamation over the diagonal matrices. This yields a new probabilist,ic proof that graph products of sofic groups are sofic.

An algebraic model for the free loop space

Abstract:We describe an algebraic chain level construction that models the passage from an arbitrary topological space to its free loop space. The input of the construction is a categorical coalgebra, i.e. a curved coalgebra satisfying certain properties, and the output is a chain complex. The construction is a modified version of the coHochschild complex of a differential graded (dg) coalgebra. When applied to the chains on an arbitrary simplicial set $X$, appropriately interpreted, it yields a chain complex that is naturally quasi-isomorphic to the singular chains on the free loop space of the geometric realization of $X$. We relate this construction to a twisted tensor product model for the free loop space constructed using the adjoint action of a dg Hopf algebra model for the based loop space.

Abstract:Geometric methods proposed by Stallings for treating finitely generated subgroups of free groups were successfully used by many authors to solve a wide collection of decision problems for free groups and their subgroups. In the present paper we employ our generalized Stallings' folding method to introduce a procedure, which given a subgroup H of a free product of finite groups reads off its Kurosh decomposition from the subgroup graph of H.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with a study of inverse monoids presented by a set X X subject to relations of the form e i = f i {e_i} = {f_i} , i ∈ I i \in I , where e i {e_i} and f i {f_i} are Dyck words, i.e. idempotents of the free inverse monoid on X X . Some general results of Stephen are used to reduce the word problem for such a presentation to the membership problem for a certain subtree of the Cayley graph of the free group on X X . In the finitely presented case the word problem is solved by using Rabin’s theorem on the second order monadic logic of the infinite binary tree. Some connections with the theory of rational subsets of the free group and the theory of context-free languages are explored.

Splittings of One-Ended Groups with One-Ended Halfspaces

Abstract:We introduce the notion of halfspaces associated to a group splitting, and investigate the relationship between the coarse geometry of the halfspaces and the coarse geometry of the group. Roughly speaking, the halfspaces of a group splitting are subgraphs of the Cayley graph obtained by pulling back the halfspaces of the Bass--Serre tree. Our first theorem shows that (under mild conditions) any splitting of a one-ended group can be upgraded to a splitting where all the halfspaces are one-ended. Our second theorem demonstrates that a one-ended group usually has a JSJ splitting where all the halfspaces are one-ended. And our third theorem states that if a one-ended finitely presented group $G$ admits a splitting such that some edge stabilizer has more than one end, but the halfspaces associated to the edge stabilizer are one-ended, then $H^2(G,\mathbb ZG)\ne \{0\}$; in particular $G$ is not simply connected at infinity and $G$ is not an $n$-dimensional duality group for $n\geq3$.

Abstract:Three events in a probability space form a conjunctive fork if they satisfy specific constraints on conditional independence and covariances. Patterns of conjunctive forks within collections of events are characterized by means of systems of linear equations that have positive solutions. This characterization allows patterns of conjunctive forks to be recognized in polynomial time. Relations to previous work on causal betweenness and on patterns of conditional independence among random variables are discussed.

Abstract:Bowditch's JSJ tree for splittings over 2-ended subgroups is a quasi-isometry invariant for 1-ended hyperbolic groups which are not cocompact Fuchsian. Our main result gives an explicit, computable "visual" construction of this tree for certain hyperbolic right-angled Coxeter groups. As an application of our construction we identify a large class of such groups for which the JSJ tree, and hence the visual boundary, is a complete quasi-isometry invariant, and thus the quasi-isometry problem is decidable. We also give a direct proof of the fact that among the Coxeter groups we consider, the cocompact Fuchsian groups form a rigid quasi-isometry class. In an appendix, written jointly with Christopher Cashen, we show that the JSJ tree is not a complete quasi-isometry invariant for the entire class of Coxeter groups we consider.
A Unified Graph-Theoretic Framework for Free-Fermion Solvability

Abstract:We show that a quantum spin system has an exact description by non-interacting fermions if its frustration graph is claw-free and contains a simplicial clique. The frustration graph of a spin model captures the pairwise anticommutation relations between Pauli terms of its Hamiltonian in a given basis. This result captures a vast family of known free-fermion solutions. In previous work, it was shown that a free-fermion solution exists if the frustration graph is either a line graph, or (even-hole, claw)-free. The former case generalizes the celebrated Jordan-Wigner transformation and includes the exact solution to the Kitaev honeycomb model. The latter case generalizes a non-local solution to the four-fermion model given by Fendley. Our characterization unifies these two approaches, extending generalized Jordan-Wigner solutions to the non-local setting and generalizing the four-fermion solution to models of arbitrary spatial dimension. Our key technical insight is the identification of a class of cycle symmetries for all models with claw-free frustration graphs. We prove that these symmetries commute, and this allows us to apply Fendley's solution method to each symmetric subspace independently. Finally, we give a physical description of the fermion modes in terms of operators generated by repeated commutation with the Hamiltonian. This connects our framework to the developing body of work on operator Krylov subspaces. Our results deepen the connection between many-body physics and the mathematical theory of claw-free graphs.
