Abstract:We consider the two-pronged fork frame $F$ and the variety $\mathbf{Eq}(B_F)$ generated by its dual closure algebra $B_F$. We describe the finite projective algebras in $\mathbf{Eq}(B_F)$ and give a purely semantic proof that unification in $\mathbf{Eq}(B_F)$ is finitary and not unitary.

Abstract:This thesis is a contribution to the model theory of valued fields. We study forking in valued fields and some of their reducts. We focus particularly on pseudo-local fields, the ultraproducts of residue characteristic zero of the p-adic valued fields. First, we look at the value groups of the valued fields we are interested in, the regular ordered Abelian groups. We establish for these ordered groups a geometric description of forking, as well as a full classification of the global extensions of a given type which are non-forking or invariant. Then, we prove an Ax-Kochen-Ershov principle for forking and dividing in expansions of pure short exact sequences of Abelian structures, as studied by Aschenbrenner-Chernikov-Gehret-Ziegler in their article about distality. This setting applies in particular to the leading-term structure of (expansions of) valued fields. Lastly, we give various sufficient conditions for a parameter set in a Henselian valued field of residue characteristic zero to be an extension base. In particular, we show that forking equals dividing in pseudo-local fields of residue characteristic zero. Additionally, we discuss results by Ealy-Haskell-Simon on forking in separated extensions of Henselian valued fields of residue characteristic zero. We contribute to the question in the setting of Abhyankar extensions, where we show that, with some additional conditions, if a type in a pseudo-local field does not fork, then there exists some global invariant Keisler measure whose support contains that type. This behavior is well-known in pseudo-finite fields.

Abstract:We prove that, given a sufficiently functorial assignment from rings to big Cohen-Macaulay algebras $R \mapsto B$, that the associated big Cohen-Macaulay closure operation on ideals $I \mapsto I B \cap R$ necessarily satisfies the Briançon-Skoda type property. The proof combines arguments of Lipman-Teissier, Hochster, Ma, and Hochster-Huneke. Specializing to mixed characteristic, and utilizing a result of Bhatt on absolute integral closures, this recovers a slight strengthening of a result of Heitmann.

Abstract:In their article about distality in valued fields, Aschenbrenner, Chernikov, Gehret and Ziegler proved resplendent Ax-Kochen-Ershov principles for quantifier elimination in pure short exact sequences of Abelian structures. We study how their work relates to forking, and we prove Ax-Kochen-Ershov principles for forking and dividing in this setting.

Abstract:In universal algebraic geometry, an algebra is called an equational domain if the union of two algebraic sets is algebraic. We characterize equational domains, with respect to polynomial equations, inside congruence permutable varieties, and with respect to term equations, among all algebras of size two and all algebras of size three with a cyclic automorphism. Furthermore, for each size at least three, we prove that, modulo term equivalence, there is a continuum of equational domains of that size.

Abstract:Frobenius' Theorem states that, besides the fields of real and complex numbers, the algebra of quaternions <math>H</math> is the only finite-dimensional real division algebra. We first give a short elementary proof of this theorem, then characterize finite-dimensional real algebras that contain either a copy of <math>C</math>, a copy of <math>H</math>, or a pair of anticommuting invertible elements through the dimensions of their (left) ideals, and finally consider the problem of lifting algebraic elements modulo ideals.

On the dimension of the Fomin-Kirillov algebra and related algebras

Abstract:In 1999, Fomin-Kirillov introduced the quadratic algebras $\mathcal{E}_m$ in terms of generators and relations which are the universal quadratic cover of the algebra generated by divided difference operators $\partial_{ij}$ acting on the polynomial ring $\mathbf{k}[x_1,\ldots,x_m]$. These algebras are mostly important due to their relations to Schubert calculus and geometry and to the general framework of quantum groups and Nichols algebras. Fomin and Kirillov asked about the dimension of $\mathcal{E}_m$. In this paper, we prove that $\mathcal{E}_m$ is infinite dimensional for all $m\geq 6$ which was a well-known conjecture. The techniques we use rely on braided differential calculus as developed by Liu and Bazlov as well as on the notion of integrals for Hopf algebras as introduced by Sweedler.

Non-forking independence in stable theories

Abstract:We observe that a simple condition suffices to describes non-forking independence over models in a stable theory. Under mild assumptions, this description can be extended to non-forking independence over algebraically closed subsets, without having to use the full strength of the work of the seminal work of Kim and Pillay. The results in this note (which are surely well-known among most model theorists) essentially use that types over models in a stable theory are stationary.

Abstract:We endow twisted tensor products with a natural notion of counit and comultiplication, and we provide sufficient and necessary conditions making the twisted tensor product a counital coassociative coalgebra. We then characterize when the twisted tensor product of bialgebras is a bialgebra, and when the twisted tensor product of Frobenius algebras is a Frobenius algebra. Our methods are purely diagrammatic, so these results hold for (braided) monoidal categories. As an application, we recover that some quantum complete intersections are Frobenius algebras, and we construct families of noncommutative symmetric Frobenius algebras. Along the way, we also characterize when twisted tensor products of separable algebras are separable, and we prove that twisted tensor products of special Frobenius algebras are special Frobenius.

Decomposition and framing of F-bundles and applications to quantum cohomology

Abstract:F-bundle is a formal/non-archimedean version of variation of nc-Hodge structures which plays a crucial role in the theory of atoms as birational invariants from Gromov-Witten theory. In this paper, we establish the spectral decomposition theorem for F-bundles according to the generalized eigenspaces of the Euler vector field action. The proof relies on solving systems of partial differential equations recursively in terms of power series, and on estimating the size of the coefficients for non-archimedean convergence. The same technique allows us to establish the existence and uniqueness of the extension of framing for logarithmic F-bundles. As an application, we prove the uniqueness of the decomposition map for the A-model F-bundle (hence quantum D-module and quantum cohomology) associated to a projective bundle, as well as to a blowup of an algebraic variety. This complements the existence results by Iritani-Koto and Iritani.

Abstract:We present a survey on the latest development in the representation theory of algebras with Frobenius morphisms. This includes a generalization of the graph and root system folding relation to folding relations at the representation level, at the category level, and further at the derived category level. As an application, we use it to approach Kac’s theory for Kac-Moody algebras with symmetrizable Cartan matrices.
A categorical view of varieties and equations

Abstract:We present a common framework to study varieties in great generality from a categorical point of view. The main application of this study is in the setting of algebraic categories, where we introduce Birkhoff varieties which are essentially subvarieties of algebraic categories, and we get a generalization of Birkhoff's variety theorem. In particular, we show that Birkhoff varieties are coreflexive equalizers. The key of this generalization is to give a more general concept of equation for subvarieties of algebraic categories. In order to get our characterization of Birkhoff varieties, we study inserters over algebraic categories, where we generalize some well-known results of algebras for finitary endofunctors over $Set$. By duality, we obtain a characterization of cosubvarieties of coalgebraic categories. Surprisingly, these cosubvarieties turn to be varieties according to our theory of varieties.

Abstract:We study module like objects over categorical quotients of algebras by the action of coalgebras with several objects. These take the form of ``entwined comodules'' and ``entwined contramodules'' over a triple $(\mathscr C,A,\psi)$, where $A$ is an algebra, $\mathscr C$ is a coalgebra with several objects and $\psi$ is a collection of maps that ``entwines'' $\mathscr C$ with $A$. Our objective is to prove Frobenius, separability and Maschke type theorems for functors between categories of entwined comodules and entwined contramodules.

Abstract:Over a non-closed field, it is a common strategy to use separable algebras as invariants to distinguish algebraic and geometric objects. The most famous example is the deep connection between Severi-Brauer varieties and central simple algebras. For more general varieties, one might use endomorphism algebras of line bundles, of indecomposable vector bundles, or of exceptional objects in their derived categories. Using Galois cohomology, we describe a new invariant of reductive algebraic groups that captures precisely when this strategy will fail. Our main result characterizes this invariant in terms of coflasque resolutions of linear algebraic groups introduced by Colliot-Thélène. We determine whether or not this invariant is trivial for many fields. For number fields, we show it agrees with the Tate-Shafarevich group of the linear algebraic group, up to behavior at real places.

Abstract:Firm Frobenius algebras are firm algebras and counital coalgebras such that the comultiplication is a bimodule map. They are investigated by categorical methods based on a study of adjunctions and lifted functors. Their categories of comodules and of firm modules are shown to be isomorphic if and only if a canonical comparison functor from the category of comodules to the category of non-unital modules factorizes through the category of firm modules. This happens for example if the underlying algebra possesses local units, e.g. the firm Frobenius algebra arises from a co-Frobenius coalgebra over a base field; or if the comultiplication splits the multiplication (hence the underlying coalgebra is coseparable).

Abstract:A class of left bialgebroids whose underlying algebra $A\sharp H$ is a smash product of a bialgebra $H$ with a braided commutative Yetter--Drinfeld $H$-algebra $A$ has recently been studied in relation to models of field theories on noncommutative spaces. In [A. Borowiec, A. Pachol, ``Twisted bialgebroids versus bialgebroids from a Drinfeld twist'', J. Phys. A50 (2017) 055205] a proof has been presented that the bialgebroid $A_F\sharp H^F$ where $H^F$ and $A_F$ are the twists of $H$ and $A$ by a Drinfeld 2-cocycle $F = \sum F^1\otimes F^2$ is isomorphic to the twist of the bialgebroid $A\sharp H$ by the bialgebroid 2-cocycle $\sum 1\sharp F^1\otimes 1\sharp F^2$ induced by $F$. They assume $H$ is quasitriangular, which is reasonable for many physical applications. However the proof and the entire paper take for granted that the coaction and the prebraiding are both given by special formulas involving the R-matrix. There are counterexamples of Yetter--Drinfeld modules over quasitriangular Hopf algebras which are not of this special form. Nevertheless, the main result essentially survives. We present a proof with general coaction and the correct prebraiding, and even without the assumption of quasitriangularity.
