Abstract:A graph is a ``$k$-Kuratowski graph'' if it has exactly $k$ components, each isomorphic to $K_5$ or to $K_{3,3}$. We prove that if a graph $G$ contains no $k$-Kuratowski graph as a minor,then there is a set $X$ of boundedly many vertices such that $G\setminus X$ can be drawn in a (possibly disconnected) surface in which no $k$-Kuratowski graph can be drawn.

Abstract:The graph minor structure theorem by Robertson and Seymour shows that every graph that excludes a fixed minor can be constructed by a combination of four ingredients: graphs embedded in a surface of bounded genus, a bounded number of vortices of bounded width, a bounded number of apex vertices, and the clique-sum operation. This paper studies the converse question: What is the maximum order of a complete graph minor in a graph constructed using these four ingredients? Our main result answers this question up to a constant factor.

Abstract:The generalized Turán number ex(n,Ks,F) denotes the maximum number of copies of Ks in an n -vertex F -free graph. Let kF denote k disjoint copies of F . Gerbner et al. (2019) [8] gave a lower bound for ex(n,K3,2C5) and obtained the magnitude of ex(n,Ks,kKr) . In this paper, we determine the exact value of ex(n,K3,2C5) and described the unique extremal graph for large n . Moreover, we also determine the exact value of ex(n,Kr,(k+1)Kr) which generalizes some known results.

Bipartite graphs with no K6 minor

Abstract:A theorem of Mader shows that every graph with average degree at least eight has a K 6 minor, and this is false if we replace eight by any smaller constant. Replacing average degree by minimum degree seems to make little difference: we do not know whether all graphs with minimum degree at least seven have K 6 minors, but minimum degree six is certainly not enough. For every ε > 0 there are arbitrarily large graphs with average degree at least 8 − ε and minimum degree at least six, with no K 6 minor. But what if we restrict ourselves to bipartite graphs? The first statement remains true: for every ε > 0 there are arbitrarily large bipartite graphs with average degree at least 8 − ε and no K 6 minor. But surprisingly, going to minimum degree now makes a significant difference. We will show that every bipartite graph with minimum degree at least six has a K 6 minor. Indeed, it is enough that every vertex in the larger part of the bipartition has degree at least six.

Abstract:A parallel minor is obtained from a graph by any sequence of edge contractions and parallel edge deletions. We prove that, for any positive integer k, every internally 4‐connected graph of sufficiently high order contains a parallel minor isomorphic to a variation of K4,k with a complete graph on the vertices of degree k, the k‐partition triple fan with a complete graph on the vertices of degree k, the k‐spoke double wheel, the k‐spoke double wheel with axle, the (2k+1)‐rung Möbius zigzag ladder, the (2k)‐rung zigzag ladder, or Kk. Abstract:In 1971, Tomescu conjectured [Le nombre des graphes connexes $k$-chromatiques minimaux aux sommets étiquetés, C. R. Acad. Sci. Paris 273 (1971), 1124--1126] that every connected graph $G$ on $n$ vertices with $\chi(G) = k \geq 4$ has at most $k!(k-1)^{n-k}$ $k$-colourings, where equality holds if and only if the graph is formed from $K_k$ by repeatedly adding leaves. In this note we prove (a strengthening of) the conjecture of Tomescu when $k=5$.

The planar Turán number of $\{K_4,C_5\}$ and $\{K_4,C_6\}$

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{H}$ be a set of graphs. The planar Turán number, $ex_\mathcal{P}(n,\mathcal{H})$, is the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex planar graph which does not contain any member of $\mathcal{H}$ as a subgraph. When $\mathcal{H}=\{H\}$ has only one element, we usually write $ex_\mathcal{P}(n,H)$ instead. The topic of extremal planar graphs was initiated by Dowden (2016). He obtained sharp upper bound for both $ex_\mathcal{P}(n,C_5)$ and $ex_\mathcal{P}(n,K_4)$. Later on, we obtained sharper bound for $ex_\mathcal{P}(n,\{K_4,C_7\})$. In this paper, we give upper bounds of $ex_\mathcal{P}(n,\{K_4,C_5\})\leq {15\over 7}(n-2)$ and $ex_\mathcal{P}(n,\{K_4,C_6\})\leq {7\over 3}(n-2)$. We also give constructions which show the bounds are tight for infinitely many graphs.

A note on highly connected $K_{2,\ell}$-minor free graphs

Abstract:We show that every $3$-connected $K_{2,\ell}$-minor free graph with minimum degree at least $4$ has maximum degree at most $7\ell$. As a consequence, we show that every 3-connected $K_{2,\ell}$-minor free graph with minimum degree at least $5$ and no twins of degree $5$ has bounded size. Our proofs use Steiner trees and nested cuts; in particular, they do not rely on Ding's characterization of $K_{2,\ell}$-minor free graphs.

Excluding Surfaces as Minors in Graphs

Abstract:We introduce an annotated extension of treewidth that measures the contribution of a vertex set $X$ to the treewidth of a graph $G.$ This notion provides a graph distance measure to some graph property $\mathcal{P}$: A vertex set $X$ is a $k$-treewidth modulator of $G$ to $\mathcal{P}$ if the treewidth of $X$ in $G$ is at most $k$ and its removal gives a graph in $\mathcal{P}.$This notion allows for a version of the Graph Minors Structure Theorem (GMST) that has no need for apices and vortices: $K_k$-minor free graphs are those that admit tree-decompositions whose torsos have $c_{k}$-treewidth modulators to some surface of Euler-genus $c_{k}.$ This reveals that minor-exclusion is essentially tree-decomposability to a ``modulator-target scheme'' where the modulator is measured by its treewidth and the target is surface embeddability. We then fix the target condition by demanding that $\Sigma$ is some particular surface and define a ``surface extension'' of treewidth, where $\Sigma\mbox{-}\mathsf{tw}(G)$ is the minimum $k$ for which $G$ admits a tree-decomposition whose torsos have a $k$-treewidth modulator to being embeddable in $\Sigma.$We identify a finite collection $\mathfrak{D}_{\Sigma}$ of parametric graphs and prove that the minor-exclusion of the graphs in $\mathfrak{D}_{\Sigma}$ precisely determines the asymptotic behavior of ${\Sigma}\mbox{-}\mathsf{tw},$ for every surface $\Sigma.$ It follows that the collection $\mathfrak{D}_{\Sigma}$ bijectively corresponds to the ``surface obstructions'' for $\Sigma,$ i.e., surfaces that are minimally non-contained in $\Sigma.$

Abstract:The well known Wagner's theorem states that a graph is a planar graph if and only if it is $K_5$-minor-free and $K_{3,3}$-minor-free. Denote by $AT(G)$ the Alon-Tarsi number of a graph $G$. We show that for any $K_{3,3}$-minor-free graph $G$, $AT(G)\le 5$, there exists a matching $M$ and a forest $F$ such that $AT(G-M)\le 4$ and $AT(G-E(F))\le 3$, extending the result on the Alon-Tarsi number of $K_5$-minor-free graphs due to Abe, Kim and Ozeki.

Abstract:Graphs that are critical (minimal excluded minors) for embeddability in surfaces are studied. In Part I, it was shown that graphs that are critical for embeddings into surfaces of Euler genus k or for embeddings into nonorientable surface of genus k are built from 3-connected components, called hoppers and cascades. In Part II, all cascades for Euler genus 2 are classified. As a consequence, the complete list of obstructions of connectivity 2 for embedding graphs into the Klein bottle is obtained.

On multicolor Turán numbers

Abstract:We address a problem which is a generalization of Turán-type problems recently introduced by Imolay, Karl, Nagy and Váli. Let $F$ be a fixed graph and let $G$ be the union of $k$ edge-disjoint copies of $F$, namely $G = \mathbin{\dot{\cup}}_{i=1}^{k} F_i$, where each $F_i$ is isomorphic to a fixed graph $F$ and $E(F_i)\cap E(F_j)=\emptyset$ for all $i \neq j$. We call a subgraph $H\subseteq G$ multicolored if $H$ and $F_i$ share at most one edge for all $i$. Define $\text{ex}_F(H,n)$ to be the maximum value $k$ such that there exists $G = \mathbin{\dot{\cup}}_{i=1}^{k} F_i$ on $n$ vertices without a multicolored copy of $H$. We show that $\text{ex}_{C_5}(C_3,n) \le n^2/25 + 3n/25+o(n)$ and that all extremal graphs are close to a blow-up of the 5-cycle. This bound is tight up to the linear error term.

Abstract:An equivalent version of the Borodin-Kostochka Conjecture, due to Cranston and Rabern, says that any graph with $\chi = \Delta = 9$ contains $K_3 \lor E_6$ as a subgraph. Here we prove several results in support of this conjecture, where vertex-criticality and forbidden substructure conditions get us either close or all the way to containing $K_3 \lor E_6$.

Abstract:We prove that for every tree $T$ of radius $h$, there is an integer $c$ such that every $T$-minor-free graph is contained in $H\boxtimes K_c$ for some graph $H$ with pathwidth at most $2h-1$. This is a qualitative strengthening of the Excluded Tree Minor Theorem of Robertson and Seymour (GM I). We show that radius is the right parameter to consider in this setting, and $2h-1$ is the best possible bound.

Abstract:The Turán problem asks for the largest number of edges in an $n$-vertex graph not containing a fixed forbidden subgraph $F$. We construct a new family of graphs not containing $K_{s,t}$, for $t= C^s$, with $\Omega(n^{2-1/s})$ edges matching the upper bound of Kövári, Sós and Turán.

Abstract:The classic extremal problem is that of computing the maximum number of edges in an $F$-free graph. In the case where $F=K_{r+1}$, the extremal number was determined by Turán. Later results, known as supersaturation theorems, proved that in a graph containing more edges than the extremal number, there must also be many copies of $K_{r+1}$. Alon and Shikhelman introduced a broader class of problems asking for the maximum number of copies of a graph $T$ in an $F$-free graph. In this paper, we determine some of these generalized extremal numbers and prove supersaturation results for them.

Abstract:We show that any minimal Cayley graph of a (finitely generated) generalized dihedral or nilpotent group has chromatic number at most 3, while 4 colors are sometimes necessary for soluble groups. On the other hand we construct graphs of unbounded chromatic number that admit a proper edge coloring such that each cycle has some color at least twice. The latter disproves a conjecture of Babai'78 that would have implied that all minimal Cayley graphs have bounded chromatic number -- a problem that remains open.

Abstract:Combining Ky Fan's theorem with ideas of Greene and Matousek we prove a generalization of Dol'nikov's theorem. Using another variant of the Borsuk-Ulam theorem due to Bacon and Tucker, we also prove the presence of all possible completely multicolored t-vertex complete bipartite graphs in t-colored t-chromatic Kneser graphs and in several of their relatives. In particular, this implies a generalization of a recent result of G. Spencer and F. E. Su.

Basis number of bounded genus graphs

Abstract:The basis number of a graph $G$ is the smallest integer $k$ such that $G$ admits a basis $B$ for its cycle space, where each edge of $G$ belongs to at most $k$ members of $B$. In this note, we show that every non-planar graph that can be embedded on a surface with Euler characteristic $0$ has a basis number of exactly $3$, proving a conjecture of Schmeichel from 1981. Additionally, we show that any graph embedded on a surface $\Sigma$ (whether orientable or non-orientable) of genus $g$ has a basis number of $O(\log^2 g)$.
