Abstract:Gravity is the weakest force in nature, and the gravitational interactions with all standard model (SM) particles can be well described by perturbative expansions of the Einstein-Hilbert action as an effective theory, all the way up to energies below the fundamental Planck scale. We use the Vilkovisky-DeWitt method to derive the first gauge-invariant nonzero gravitational power-law corrections to the Callan-Symanzik beta functions which make both Abel and non-Abel gauge interactions asymptotically free. We further demonstrate that the graviton-induced universal power-law runnings always assist the three SM gauge forces to reach unification around the Planck scale, irrespective of the detail of logarithmic corrections. We further compute the power-law corrections to the SM Higgs sector and derive modified triviality bound on the Higgs boson mass.

Abstract:Setting bounds on a fifth force Some extensions to the Standard Model of particle physics posit the existence of a fifth force to complement the existing four fundamental forces. To set bounds on the strength of such an interaction, experiments on vastly different length scales have been performed. Heacock et al . used an unusual method called Pendellösung interferometry to measure the neutron structure factors of silicon. The momentum dependence of the structure factors enabled the researchers to put more stringent bounds on the strength of a type of fifth force called the Yukawa force, as well as measure the charge radius of the neutron. —JS

Abstract:The thermodynamical potential for dilute solutions is rederived, generalized and applied to defects in solids. It is shown that there are always defects in solids, i.e. there is no perfect solid at any finite temperature. Apart from the temperature- dependent concentration of defects, another case is presented, where the defect concentration does not depend on temperature.

Abstract:We derive the field-dependent masses in Fermi gauges for arbitrary scalar extensions of the Standard Model. These masses can be used to construct the effective potential for various models of new physics. We release a flexible Mathematica notebook ( VefFermi ) which performs these calculations and renders large-scale phenomenological studies of various models possible. Motivated by the debate on the importance of gauge dependence, we show that, even in relatively simple models, there exist points where the global minimum is discontinuous in the gauge parameter. Such points require some care in discovering, indicating that a gauge-dependent treatment might still give reasonable results when examining the global features of a model.

An effective gauge field theory of the nucleon interactions

Abstract:We discuss the possibility of constructing an effective gauge field theory of the nucleon interations based on the ideas of isotopic invariance as well as hypercharge invariance as a local gauge symmetry and spontaneous breaking of this symmetry. The constructed model predicts the structure of interactions of protons and neutrons with $\rho$- and $\sigma$-mesons, with pi-mesons and photons, as well as interactions of these particles with each other. The Lagrangian of the model consists of several parts parts involving dimension 4 and 5 gauge invariant operators. Feynman rules for physical degrees of freedom as follow from the Lagrangian define the structure of diagrams for one-boson exchanges between nucleons predicting the internucleon one-boson exchange potential as well as nucleon scattering amplitudes. The range of applicability of the model is discussed and estimates are made of the resulting coupling constants. The model predicts the mass of the neutral $\rho^0$-meson to be about $1\,MeV$ larger than the mass of the charged mesons $\rho^{\pm}$. The vector $\omega$-meson, which is a sterile particle with respect to the considered gauge group $SU_I(2)\times U_Y(1)$, can be added to the scheme by means of a gauge-invariant operator of dimension 5, as shown in Appendix ~A.

Abstract:Gauge theory underpins the quantum field theories of the standard model, and in a previous paper was shown via a geometric approach to describe classical electromagnetism in a form which approximates QED. Here we formalize and generalize the notion of a geometric gauge theory, then apply this framework to classical physical models, including an improved Lagrangian for matter field electromagnetism. We find a remarkably consistent series of actions, with straightforward limits under which each previous one may be obtained. Ancillary benefits include a gauge-independent Galilean Lagrangian, a geometric interpretation for the unusual metric dependence of four-momentum, a modern treatment of the effects of worldline variation on the four-current, a gauge theory of gravity which includes a matter field, and consistent units for matter field electromagnetism.

Fifth Forces from QCD Axions Scale Differently

Abstract:We reexamine the low-energy potential for a macroscopic fifth force generated from the exchange of two axions. The shift symmetry of the linear axion interactions leads to a potential falling off as V(r)∼1/r5 . We find that in the case of the QCD axion higher-order terms in the Lagrangian break the shift symmetry and lead to the dominant contribution to the potential scaling as V(r)∼1/r3 . These terms are generated by the same physics responsible for the axion mass, and therefore the new contributions to the potential induce a different force for external nucleons and leptons. Abstract:We investigate some general properties of linear gauge fixings and gauge-field correlators in lattice models with noncompact U(1) gauge symmetry. In particular, we show that, even in the presence of a gauge fixing, some gauge-field observables (like the photon-mass operator) are not well-defined, depending on the specific gauge fixing adopted and on its implementation. Numerical tests carried out in the three-dimensional noncompact lattice Abelian Higgs model fully support the analytical results and provide further insights.

Abstract:Based on the principle of reparametrization invariance, the general structure of physically relevant classical matter systems is illuminated within the Lagrangian framework. In a straightforward way, the matter Lagrangian contains background interaction fields, such as a 1-form field analogous to the electromagnetic vector potential and symmetric tensor for gravity. The geometric justification of the interaction field Lagrangians for the electromagnetic and gravitational interactions are emphasized. The generalization to E-dimensional extended objects (p-branes) embedded in a bulk space M is also discussed within the light of some familiar examples. The concept of fictitious accelerations due to un-proper time parametrization is introduced, and its implications are discussed. The framework naturally suggests new classical interaction fields beyond electromagnetism and gravity. The simplest model with such fields is analyzed and its relevance to dark matter and dark energy phenomena on large/cosmological scales is inferred. Unusual pathological behavior in the Newtonian limit is suggested to be a precursor of quantum effects and of inflation-like processes at microscopic scales.

Abstract:We discuss the possibility to obtain a massive Landau gauge, based on the local composite operator effective action framework combined with the Zimmermann reduction of couplings prescription. As a way to deal with the gauge ambiguity, we check that the ghost propagator remains positive, a necessary condition for gluon field configurations beyond the Gribov region to be negligible. We pay attention to the Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin invariance of the construction, allowing for a future generalization to a class of massive linear covariant gauges. As a litmus test, we compare our predictions to the lattice data for the two-point functions in Landau gauge introducing the "dynamically infrared-safe" renormalization scheme, including the renormalization group optimization of both the gap equation and the two-point functions. Gating of a molecular transistor: Electrostatic and Conformational

Abstract:We derive a general result that can be used to evaluate and compare the transconductance of different field-effect mechanisms in molecular transistors, both electrostatic and conformational. The electrostatic component leads to the well-known thermal limit in the absence of tunneling. We show that in a standard three-terminal geometry and in the absence of strong electron-phonon coupling, the conformational component can lead to significant advantages only if the molecular dipole moment \mu is comparable to et_ox, t_ox being the thickness of the oxide. Surprisingly this conclusion is independent of the ``softness'' of the conformational modes involved, or other geometrical factors. Detailed numerical results for specific examples are presented in support of the analytical results.

Abstract:A supersymmetric vector-like standard model without leptons is suggested to investigate the unification between gauge interactions and gravity under two loop approximation for gauge interactions and one loop string correction for gravitation. It is found that two intermediate mass scales are needed where the lower mass scale may be accessible in laboratory in future and the higher mass scale is of the order of 10(16) GeV.

Abstract:A tensor description of perturbative Einsteinian gravity about an arbitrary background spacetime is developed. By analogy with the covariant laws of electromagnetism in spacetime, gravito-electromagnetic potentials and fields are defined to emulate electromagnetic gauge transformations under substitutions belonging to the gauge symmetry group of perturbative gravitation. These definitions have the advantage that on a flat background, with the aid of a covariantly constant timelike vector field, a subset of the linearised gravitational field equations can be written in a form that is fully analogous to Maxwell's equations (without awkward factors of 4 and extraneous tensor fields). It is shown how the remaining equations in the perturbed gravitational system restrict the time dependence of solutions to these equations and thereby prohibit the existence of propagating vector fields. The induced gravito-electromagnetic Lorentz force on a test particle is evaluated in terms of these fields together with the torque on a small gyroscope. It is concluded that the analogy of perturbative gravity to Maxwell's description of electromagnetism can be valuable for (quasi-)stationary gravitational phenomena but that the analogy has its limitations.

Abstract:We consider the covariant gauge field theory of fractons, which describe a new type of quasiparticles exhibiting novel and nontrivial properties. In particular, we focus on the field theoretical peculiarities which characterize this theory, starting from the fact that, if we accept the paradigm that quantum field theories are defined by their symmetries, fractons unavoidably come together with linearized gravity. The standard Faddeev-Popov procedure to gauge fix the theory leads to a scalar gauge condition, which has two important drawbacks: it is frozen in the Landau gauge and linearized gravity cannot be obtained as a limit. In this paper we adopt a tensorially alternative gauge fixing, which avoids both problems. In particular, this allows to show that important physical features, like the counting of the degrees of freedom, do not depend on a particular gauge choice, as expected. Moreover, the resulting gauge fixed theory contains both fractons and linearized gravity as a limit, differently from the standard scalar choice.

Abstract:We review the status of our recent work on the gauge-fixing approach to lattice chiral gauge theories. New numerical results in the reduced version of a model with a U(1) gauge symmetry are presented which strongly indicate that the factorization of the correlation functions of the left-handed neutral and right-handed charged fermion fields, which we established before in perturbation theory, holds also nonperturbatively.

Abstract:Gauge invariance is a powerful tool to determine the dynamical forces among the fundamental constituents of matter. The particle content, structure and symmetries of the Standard Model Lagrangian are discussed. Special emphasis is given to the many phenomenological tests which have established this theoretical framework as the Standard Theory of the electroweak interactions: electroweak precision tests, Higgs searches, quark mixing, neutrino oscillations. The present experimental status is summarized.

Abstract:We construct realistic theories in which the Higgs fields arise from extra dimensional components of higher dimensional gauge fields. In particular, we present a minimal 5D SU(3)_C x SU(3)_W model and a unified 5D SU(6) model. In both cases the theory is reduced to the minimal supersymmetric standard model below the compactification scale, with the two Higgs doublets arising from the 5D gauge multiplet. Quarks and Leptons are introduced in the bulk, giving Yukawa couplings without conflicting with higher dimensional gauge invariance. Despite the fact that they arise from higher dimensional gauge interactions, the sizes of these Yukawa couplings can be different from the 4D gauge couplings due to wave-function profiles of the matter zero modes determined by bulk mass parameters. All unwanted fields are made heavy by introducing appropriate matter and superpotentials on branes, which are also the source of intergenerational mixings in the low-energy Yukawa matrices. The theory can accommodate a realistic structure for the Yukawa couplings as well as small neutrino masses. Scenarios for supersymmetry breaking and the mu-term generation are also discussed.

Realistic model for a fifth force explaining anomaly in ${^8Be^*} \to {^8Be} \;{e^+e^-}$ Decay

Abstract: A $6.8\,\sigma$ anomaly has been reported in the opening angle and invariant mass distributions of $e^+e^-$ pairs produced in ${^8Be}$ nuclear transitions. It has been shown that a protophobic fifth force mediated by a $17\,\textrm{MeV}$ gauge boson $X$ with pure vector current interactions can explain the data through the decay of an excited state to the ground state, ${^8Be^*} \to {^8Be}\, X$, and then the followed saturating decay $X \to e^+e^-$. In this work we propose a renormalizable model to realize this fifth force. Although axial-vector current interactions also exist in our model, their contributions cancel out in the iso-scalar interaction for ${^8Be^*} \to {^8Be} \,X$. Within the allowed parameter space, this model can alleviate the $(g-2)_\mu$ anomaly problem and can be probed by the LHCb experiment. Several other implications are discussed.
