Abstract:We consider the covariant gauge field theory of fractons, which describe a new type of quasiparticles exhibiting novel and nontrivial properties. In particular, we focus on the field theoretical peculiarities which characterize this theory, starting from the fact that, if we accept the paradigm that quantum field theories are defined by their symmetries, fractons unavoidably come together with linearized gravity. The standard Faddeev-Popov procedure to gauge fix the theory leads to a scalar gauge condition, which has two important drawbacks: it is frozen in the Landau gauge and linearized gravity cannot be obtained as a limit. In this paper we adopt a tensorially alternative gauge fixing, which avoids both problems. In particular, this allows to show that important physical features, like the counting of the degrees of freedom, do not depend on a particular gauge choice, as expected. Moreover, the resulting gauge fixed theory contains both fractons and linearized gravity as a limit, differently from the standard scalar choice.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
### Problems the paper attempts to solve This paper attempts to solve several key problems in quantum field theory related to **fractons**. Fractons are a class of quasiparticles with unique properties. They cannot move in an isolated state but can move by forming bound states. These properties have attracted wide attention in modern condensed - matter physics theory. Specifically, the paper mainly focuses on the following aspects: 1. **Construction of covariant gauge field theory**: - The paper tries to construct a covariant gauge field theory to describe fractons. This theory involves a symmetric tensor field \( h_{\mu\nu}(x) \), and its transformation law is: \[ \delta h_{\mu\nu} = \partial_\mu \partial_\nu \Phi \] where \( \Phi(x) \) is a scalar local gauge parameter. 2. **Embedding of linearized gravity**: - Since the symmetry of fractons can be regarded as a special case of infinitesimal diffeomorphism (i.e., the defining symmetry of linearized gravity), the paper explores how to naturally embed linearized gravity in the fracton theory. This is achieved through the following relationship: \[ \delta_{\text{diff}} h_{\mu\nu} = \partial_\mu \xi_\nu + \partial_\nu \xi_\mu \] When the vector gauge parameter \( \xi_\mu(x) \) is the derivative of the scalar field \( \Phi(x) \), that is: \[ \xi_\mu = \frac{1}{2} \partial_\mu \Phi \] 3. **Choice of gauge - fixing conditions**: - The paper compares the standard scalar gauge - fixing condition and the alternative tensor gauge - fixing condition. The standard scalar gauge - fixing condition is: \[ \partial_\mu \partial_\nu h^{\mu\nu} + \kappa \partial^2 h = 0 \] while the alternative tensor gauge - fixing condition is: \[ \partial_\nu h^{\mu\nu} + \kappa \partial^\mu h = 0 \] - The scalar gauge - fixing condition has two main drawbacks: one is that it is frozen in the Landau gauge, and the other is that pure linearized gravity cannot be obtained through the limit process. Therefore, the paper proposes to adopt the tensor gauge - fixing condition to avoid these problems. 4. **Counting of degrees of freedom**: - The paper studies in detail the counting of degrees of freedom of the theory under different gauge choices. By analyzing the gauge - fixed Lagrangian equations, the paper verifies that the counting of degrees of freedom does not depend on a specific gauge choice, thus proving the effectiveness of the tensor gauge - fixing condition. 5. **Properties of propagators**: - The paper calculates the propagators of the theory and studies the singular behavior of the propagators in a specific phase. These singular behaviors may indicate mass terms or phase transition points in the theory. ### Summary The main goal of this paper is to construct a covariant gauge field theory to describe fractons and solve the problems existing in the standard methods by choosing appropriate gauge - fixing conditions. Through detailed theoretical analysis, the paper verifies the effectiveness of the tensor gauge - fixing condition and shows the profound connection between the fracton theory and linearized gravity. These results are of great significance for understanding the unique properties of fractons and their applications in modern condensed - matter physics.
