Abstract:A gravitational gauge theory with a spin–affine connection (Lorentz connection) as a rotational gauge potential (fundamental dynamical variable) is suggested for reformulating the theory of Stephenson–Kilmister–Yang gravity, in which the Einstein field equation of gravity is a first-integral solution of a spin-connection gravitational gauge field equation. A heavy intermediate field $\phi $ that accompanies a matter field $\varphi $ is introduced in order to remove the conventional dimensionful gravitational coupling. Such a $\varphi $–$\phi $ coupling can lead to dimensionless gravitational coupling (i.e., the gravitational constant is dimensionless) in the present gravitational gauge field theory. A low-energy effective Lagrangian density for the matter field can be obtained by integrating out the accompanying heavy field in generating functional of path integral formalism, and therefore, a dimensionful gravitational coupling coefficient (Einstein gravitational constant) emerges. Such a dimensionless coupling of gravity, where the dimensionful coupling is emergent at low energies, is considered for scalar and spinor fields, which serve as gravitating matter fields (gravitational source). Though there are higher derivatives (e.g., third- and fourth-order partial derivatives) of the scalar and spinor fields in the low-energy effective Lagrangian densities, the ordinary equations of motion of the scalar and spinor fields can also be emergent from the present gravitational gauge theory. Therefore, the Einstein gravity can be recovered from the present gravitational gauge theory. In addition to the gravitational Lagrangian of the spacetime-rotational gauge potential (i.e., spin–affine connection), the Lagrangian of a spacetime-translational gauge potential (i.e., vierbein) is also constructed. Thus, the present dimensionless gravitational gauge coupling preserves local rotational and translational gauge symmetries. Since the spin-connection gravitational gauge field equation is a third-order differential equation of metric (the Einstein field equation of gravity is a first-integral solution), it could provide a new route to the vacuum energy cosmological constant problem.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to investigate the gauge symmetry of classicalfield theories in integral formalism. A gauge invariant theory is defined interms of the invariance of the physical observables under the coordinatetransformations in principal bundle space. Through the detailed study on theproperty of non-Abelian parallel transportor under gauge transformations, weshow that it is not generally a two-point spinor, i.e. an operator to beaffected only by the gauge group elements at the two end points of the paralleltransport path, except for the pure gauge situation, and therefore the localgauge symmetry for non-Abelian models is found to be broken in non-perturbativedomain. However, an Abelian gauge theory is proved to be strictly invariantunder local gauge transformation, as it is illustrated by the invariance of theinterference pattern of electrons in Aharonov-Bohm effect. The related issuesof the phenomenon are discussed.
Unified Lagrangians for gravity and gauge theory

Abstract:We present a new Lagrangian formulation of General Relativity with cosmological constant, coupled to Yang-Mills gauge theory. The formulation has a manifest color/kinematics-dual structure, both in the choice of fundamental fields and in the way they appear in the Lagrangian. The color/kinematics duality is between gauge and Lorentz generators. The fundamental fields consists of 1-form connections and 0-form curvatures -- a structure inspired by higher-spin gravity. The new formulation can be arrived at by combining appropriate versions of the Plebanski and Chalmers-Siegel Lagrangians, and integrating out the Plebanski 2-form. The construction comes in chiral and non-chiral versions. The chiral version is slightly simpler, and highlights the self-dual sector. The non-chiral one makes parity manifest, and doesn't force us to complexify the theory.

Abstract:Over two hundred years ago Capt. James Cook sailed up Whitsunday Passage, just a few miles where we now sit, on a voyage of astronomical observation and discovery that remains an inspiration to us all. Since the prospects of our visiting planets beyond our solar system are slim, we will have to content ourselves with searching for life using remote sensing, not sailing ships. Fortunately, a recently completed NASA study has concluded that a Terrestrial Planet Finder could be launched within a decade to detect terrestrial planets around nearby stars. A visible light coronagraph using an 8-10 m telescope, or an infrared nulling interferometer, operated on either a $\sim40$ m structure or separated spacecraft, could survey over 150 stars, looking for habitable planets and signs of primitive life. Such a mission, complemented by projects (Kepler and Eddington) that will provide statistical information on the frequency of Earth-sized planets in the habitable zone, will determine key terms in the ``Drake equation'' that describes the number of intelligent civilizations in the Universe.

New Formalism of Quantum Field Theory

Abstract:In recent years, theoretical calculations of scattering amplitudes face a huge challenge because experiment data coming from colliders, such as Large Hadron Collider (LHC), become more and more accurate. The traditional Feynman diagram technique can not deal with the problem because the difficulties involving gauge interaction. To solve the problem, theorists have made many studies. Through investigations of last fourteen years, we have achieved many important progresses, such as on-shell recursion relation, the Cachazo-He-Yuan framework for scattering amplitudes of massless particles, the geometric Grassmannian and Amplituhedron frameworks for N =4 SYM planar amplitudes, etc. These new methods can calculate tree-level and loop scattering amplitudes much faster than the traditional method, so have improved our ability to analyze background contributions from Standard Model and find possible signals of new physics by comparing with experiment data. These breakthroughs have some common features. These features, such as the focus of on-shell properties, the right choice of prescription variables and the emphasize of the analytic properties of scattering amplitudes, hint a possible new formalism of quantum field theory, which is very different from traditional Lagrangian formalism. In this article, we give a brief discussion of this topic.

Abstract:Gauge theory underpins the quantum field theories of the standard model, and in a previous paper was shown via a geometric approach to describe classical electromagnetism in a form which approximates QED. Here we formalize and generalize the notion of a geometric gauge theory, then apply this framework to classical physical models, including an improved Lagrangian for matter field electromagnetism. We find a remarkably consistent series of actions, with straightforward limits under which each previous one may be obtained. Ancillary benefits include a gauge-independent Galilean Lagrangian, a geometric interpretation for the unusual metric dependence of four-momentum, a modern treatment of the effects of worldline variation on the four-current, a gauge theory of gravity which includes a matter field, and consistent units for matter field electromagnetism.

Extended Phase Space in General Gauge Theories

Abstract:In a recent paper, it was shown that in diffeomorphism-invariant theories, Noether charges associated with a given codimension-2 surface become integrable if one introduces an extended phase space. In this paper we extend the notion of extended phase space to all gauge theories with arbitrary combinations of internal and spacetime local symmetries. We formulate this in terms of a corresponding Atiyah Lie algebroid, a geometric object derived from a principal bundle which features internal symmetries and diffeomorphisms on an equal footing. In this language, gauge transformations are understood as morphisms between Atiyah Lie algebroids that preserve the geometric structures encoded therein. The extended configuration space of a gauge theory can subsequently be understood as the space of pairs $(\varphi, \Phi)$, where $\varphi$ is a Lie algebroid morphism and $\Phi$ is a field configuration in the non-extended sense. Starting from this data, we outline a very powerful, manifestly geometric approach to the extended phase space. Using this approach, we find that the action of the group of gauge transformations and diffeomorphisms on the symplectic geometry of any covariant theory is integrable. We motivate our construction by carefully examining the need for extended phase space in Chern-Simons gauge theories and display its usefulness by re-computing the charge algebra. We also describe the implementation of the configuration algebroid in Einstein-Yang-Mills theories.

Abstract:Élie Cartan's invariant integral formalism is extended to gauge field theory, including general relativity. This constitutes an alternative procedure, as shown in several examples, that is equivalent when no second class constraints are present to the Rosenfeld, Bergmann, Dirac algorithm. In addition, a Hamilton–Jacobi formalism is developed for constructing explicit phase space functions in general relativity that are invariant under the full four-dimensional diffeomorphism group. These identify equivalence classes of classical solutions of Einstein's equations. Each member is dependent on intrinsic spatial coordinates and also undergoes non-trivial evolution in intrinsic time. Furthermore, the construction yields series expansion solutions of the field equations for all of the components of the metric tensor, including lapse and shift, in the intrinsic temporal and spatial coordinates. The intrinsic coordinates are determined by the spacetime geometry in terms of Weyl scalars. The implications of this analysis for an eventual quantum theory of gravity are profound.

Integrating curved Yang-Mills gauge theories

Abstract:We construct a gauge theory based on principal bundles $\mathcal{P}$ equipped with a right $\mathcal{G}$-action, where $\mathcal{G}$ is a Lie group bundle. Due to the fact that a $\mathcal{G}$-action acts fibre by fibre, pushforwards of tangent vectors via a right-translation act now only on the vertical structure of $\mathcal{P}$. Thus, we generalize pushforwards using sections of $\mathcal{G}$, and in order to provide a definition independent of the choice of section we fix a connection on $\mathcal{G}$, which will modify the pushforward by subtracting the fundamental vector field generated by a generalized Darboux derivative of the chosen section. A horizontal distribution on $\mathcal{P}$ invariant under such a modified pushforward leads to a parallel transport on $\mathcal{P}$ which is a homomorphism w.r.t. the $\mathcal{G}$-action and the parallel transport on $\mathcal{G}$. For achieving gauge invariance we impose conditions on the connection 1-form $\mu$ on $\mathcal{G}$: $\mu$ has to be a multiplicative form, (i.e.) closed w.r.t. a certain simplicial differential $\delta$ on $\mathcal{G}$, and the curvature $R_\mu$ of $\mu$ has to be $\delta$-exact with primitive $\zeta$; $\mu$ will be the generalization of the Maurer-Cartan form of the classical gauge theory, while the $\delta$-exactness of $R_\mu$ will generalize the role of the Maurer-Cartan equation. For allowing curved connections on $\mathcal{G}$ we will need to generalize the typical definition of the curvature/field strength $F$ on $\mathcal{P}$, that is, we add $\zeta$ to $F$. This leads to a generalized gauge theory with many similar, but generalized, statements, including Bianchi identity, gauge transformations and Darboux derivatives. An example for a gauge theory with a curved Maurer-Cartan form $\mu$ will be provided by the inner group bundle of the Hopf fibration $\mathbb{S}^7 \to \mathbb{S}^4$.

A Note On The Canonical Formalism for Gravity

Abstract:We describe a simple gauge-fixing that leads to a construction of a quantum Hilbert space for quantum gravity in an asymptotically Anti de Sitter spacetime, valid to all orders of perturbation theory. The construction is motivated by a relationship of the phase space of gravity in asymptotically Anti de Sitter spacetime to a cotangent bundle. We describe what is known about this relationship and some extensions that might plausibly be true. A key fact is that, under certain conditions, the Einstein Hamiltonian constraint equation can be viewed as a way to gauge fix the group of conformal rescalings of the metric of a Cauchy hypersurface. An analog of the procedure that we follow for Anti de Sitter gravity leads to standard results for a Klein-Gordon particle.

Abstract:Gravity is commonly thought of as one of the four force fields in nature. However, in standard formulations its mathematical structure is rather different from the Yang–Mills fields of particle physics that govern the electromagnetic, weak, and strong interactions. This paper explores this dissonance with particular focus on how gravity couples to matter from the perspective of the Cartan-geometric formulation of gravity. There the gravitational field is represented by a pair of variables: (1) a ‘contact vector’ VA which is geometrically visualized as the contact point between the spacetime manifold and a model spacetime being ‘rolled’ on top of it, and (2) a gauge connection AμAB, here taken to be valued in the Lie algebra of SO(2,3) or SO(1,4), which mathematically determines how much the model spacetime is rotated when rolled. By insisting on two principles, the gauge principle and polynomial simplicity, we shall show how one can reformulate matter field actions in a way that is harmonious with Cartan’s geometric construction. This yields a formulation of all matter fields in terms of first order partial differential equations. We show in detail how the standard second order formulation can be recovered. In particular, the Hodge dual, which characterizes the structure of bosonic field equations, pops up automatically. Furthermore, the energy–momentum and spin-density three-forms are naturally combined into a single object here denoted the spin-energy–momentum three-form. Finally, we highlight a peculiarity in the mathematical structure of our first-order formulation of Yang–Mills fields. This suggests a way to unify a U(1) gauge field with gravity into a SO(1,5)-valued gauge field using a natural generalization of Cartan geometry in which the larger symmetry group is spontaneously broken down to SO(1,3)×U(1). The coupling of this unified theory to matter fields and possible extensions to non-Abelian gauge fields are left as open questions.

Abstract:The relation between four dimensional $SO(4)$ pure Yang-Mills theory and the gravity is discussed. The functional integral for Yang-Mills theory is rewritten in terms of the gravity metric and Riemann tensors. This relation is shown to provide also a simple way to derive the linear potential resulting from the average Wilson loop in the pure Yang-Mills theory.

Abstract:We reformulate gauge theories in analogy with the vierbein formalism of general relativity. More specifically, we reformulate gauge theories such that their gauge dynamical degrees of freedom are local fields that transform linearly under the dual representation of the charged matter field. These local fields, which naively have the interpretation of non-local operators similar to Wilson lines, satisfy constraint equations. A set of basis tensor fields are used to solve these constraint equations, and their field theory is constructed. A new local symmetry in terms of the basis tensor fields is used to make this field theory local and maintain a Hamiltonian that is bounded from below. The field theory of the basis tensor fields is what we call the basis tensor gauge theory.

Abstract:Classical motion of a charged particle in an electromagnetic field is described by the Lorentz equation in terms of the field components. The field is defined by the infinitesimal gauge group elements associated with closed curves. The Lorentz equation may be derived from the action principle with an appropriate Lagrangian. The Lagrangian may also be used to associate group elements with curves in the space-time manifold. The action principle is shown here to be an equivalence relation between the infinitesimal elements so defined for a collection of closed curves and the identity element. This suggests a natural extension to require the equivalence of global elements with the identity and by considering all curves. The resulting equation, in addition to providing an extension of the Lorentz equation, also admits a straightforward generalization to non-Abelian gauge fields. The extended equation has an infinite number of trajectories as solutions. The properties of these paths are shown to impart wavelike properties to the particles in motion. In view of these results, the motion of a particle is formulated within the framework of the path integral formalism that yields a generalized Schrödinger type equation in a general gauge field. As a further implication of the properties of the trajectories assigned to a particle, this equation is shown to reduce to a set of equations, one of them being the Klein–Gordon equation.

Abstract:We formulate gauge theories on noncompact Lorentzian manifolds. For definiteness we choose an SO(1,4) gauge theory -- the isometry group of the five dimensional Minkowski space. We make use of the natural inner product to construct the Yang-Mills gauge action on four dimensional spacetime, on which the natural tetrad and metric are induced, thus breaking the symmetry to that of general relativity. In the low energy limit -- if a suitable gauge field condensate develops -- the theory reduces to the Cartan-Einstein gravity, which harbors nondynamical torsion, and is consistent with all observations. We also discuss how to couple our gauge theory of gravity to scalar and vector matter. The Hamiltonian analysis shows that the theory possesses no Ostrogradsky instabilities, however it harbors a kinetic instability. We conjecture that such a kinetic instability can be removed either by generalizing the theory to the nonlinear Born-Infeld theory, or by constraining the kinetic instability. This work is an attempt to formulate gravity as a unitary, renormalizable gauge theory without instabilities, in which the fundamental propagating degrees of freedom are in the spin-one tetrad connection.

Abstract:We consider the covariant gauge field theory of fractons, which describe a new type of quasiparticles exhibiting novel and nontrivial properties. In particular, we focus on the field theoretical peculiarities which characterize this theory, starting from the fact that, if we accept the paradigm that quantum field theories are defined by their symmetries, fractons unavoidably come together with linearized gravity. The standard Faddeev-Popov procedure to gauge fix the theory leads to a scalar gauge condition, which has two important drawbacks: it is frozen in the Landau gauge and linearized gravity cannot be obtained as a limit. In this paper we adopt a tensorially alternative gauge fixing, which avoids both problems. In particular, this allows to show that important physical features, like the counting of the degrees of freedom, do not depend on a particular gauge choice, as expected. Moreover, the resulting gauge fixed theory contains both fractons and linearized gravity as a limit, differently from the standard scalar choice.

Abstract:A number of approaches to gravitation have much in common with the gauge theories of the standard model of particle physics. In this paper, we develop the Hamiltonian formulation of a class of gravitational theories that may be regarded as spontaneously-broken gauge theories of the complexified Lorentz group with the gravitational field described entirely by a gauge field valued in the Lie algebra of and a `Higgs field' valued in the group's fundamental representation. The theories have one free parameter which appears in a similar role to the inverse of the Barbero-Immirzi parameter of Einstein-Cartan theory. However, contrary to that parameter, it is shown that the number of degrees of freedom crucially depends on the value of . For non-zero values of , it is shown the theories possesses three complex degrees of freedom, and for the specific values an extension to General Relativity is recovered in a symmetry-broken regime. For the value , the theory possesses no local degrees of freedom. A non-zero value of corresponds to the self-dual and anti-self-dual gauge fields appearing asymmetrically in the action, therefore in these models, the existence of gravitational degrees of freedom is tied to chiral asymmetry in the gravitational sector.

Abstract:We develop a Lagrangian quantization formalism for a class of theories obtained by the restriction of the configuration space of gauge fields from a wider (parental) gauge theory. This formalism is based on application of the Batalin-Vilkovisky technique for quantization of theories with linearly dependent generators, their linear dependence originating from a special type of projection from the originally irreducible gauge generators of the parental theory. The algebra of these projected generators is shown to be closed for parental gauge algebras closed off shell. We demonstrate that new physics of the restricted theory, as compared to its parental theory, is associated with the rank deficiency of a special gauge-restriction operator reflecting the gauge transformations of the restriction constraints functions -- this distinguishes the restricted theory from its partial gauge fixing. As a byproduct of this technique a workable algorithm for the one-loop effective action in generic first-stage reducible theory was constructed, along with the explicit set of tree-level Ward identities for gauge field, ghost, and ghosts-for-ghosts propagators. The formalism is applied to unimodular gravity theory, and its one-loop effective action is obtained in terms of functional determinants of minimal second-order operators, calculable on generic backgrounds by Schwinger-DeWitt technique of local curvature expansion. The result is shown to be equivalent to Einstein gravity theory with a cosmological term up to a special contribution of the global degree of freedom associated with the variable value of the cosmological constant. The role of this degree of freedom in a special duality relation between Einstein theory and unimodular gravity is briefly discussed.
