Abstract:We review the non-linear gauge-fixing for the Standard Model, proposed by F. Boudjema and E. Chopin, and present our implementation of this non-linear gauge-fixing to the Standard Model and to the minimal supersymmetric Standard Model in FeynArts.

Abstract:We analyze how gauge fixing, which is required by any practical continuum approach to gauge systems, can interfere with the physical symmetries of such systems. In principle, the gauge fixing procedure, which deals with the (unphysical) gauge symmetry, should not interfere with the other (physical) symmetries. In practice, however, there can be an interference which takes two different forms. First, depending on the considered gauge, it might not always be simple or possible to devise approximation schemes that preserve the physical symmetry constraints on (gauge-independent) observables. Second, even at an exact level of discussion, the (gauge-dependent) effective action for the gauge field, and thus the related vertex functions, may not reflect the physical symmetries of the problem. We illustrate these difficulties using a very general class of gauge fixings that contains the usual gauge fixings as particular cases. Using background field techniques, we then propose specific gauge choices that allow one to keep the physical symmetries explicit, both at the level of the observables and at the level of the effective action for the gauge field. Our analysis is based on the notion of invariance modulo gauge transformations. This is not only a convenient framework to discuss symmetries in the presence of unphysical degrees of freedom, but it also allows one to reinterpret certain well known phenomena in gauge theories without the need to invoke the conceptually annoying ``breaking of a gauge symmetry''.

Abstract:The concept of gauge field is a cornerstone of modern physics and the synthetic gauge field has emerged as a new way to manipulate particles in many disciplines. In optics, several schemes of Abelian synthetic gauge fields have been proposed. Here, we introduce a new platform for realizing synthetic SU(2) non-Abelian gauge fields acting on two-dimensional optical waves in a wide class of anisotropic materials and discover novel phenomena. We show that a virtual non-Abelian Lorentz force arising from material anisotropy can induce light beams to travel along Zitterbewegung trajectories even in homogeneous media. We further design an optical non-Abelian Aharonov-Bohm system which results in the exotic spin density interference effect. We can extract the Wilson loop of an arbitrary closed optical path from a series of gauge fixed points in the interference fringes. Our scheme offers a new route to study SU(2) gauge field related physics using optics.

Abstract:We review the status of our recent work on the gauge-fixing approach to lattice chiral gauge theories. New numerical results in the reduced version of a model with a U(1) gauge symmetry are presented which strongly indicate that the factorization of the correlation functions of the left-handed neutral and right-handed charged fermion fields, which we established before in perturbation theory, holds also nonperturbatively.

Abstract:We investigate some general properties of linear gauge fixings and gauge-field correlators in lattice models with noncompact U(1) gauge symmetry. In particular, we show that, even in the presence of a gauge fixing, some gauge-field observables (like the photon-mass operator) are not well-defined, depending on the specific gauge fixing adopted and on its implementation. Numerical tests carried out in the three-dimensional noncompact lattice Abelian Higgs model fully support the analytical results and provide further insights.

Exploring gauge-fixing conditions with gradient-based optimization

Abstract:Lattice gauge fixing is required to compute gauge-variant quantities, for example those used in RI-MOM renormalization schemes or as objects of comparison for model calculations. Recently, gauge-variant quantities have also been found to be more amenable to signal-to-noise optimization using contour deformations. These applications motivate systematic parameterization and exploration of gauge-fixing schemes. This work introduces a differentiable parameterization of gauge fixing which is broad enough to cover Landau gauge, Coulomb gauge, and maximal tree gauges. The adjoint state method allows gradient-based optimization to select gauge-fixing schemes that minimize an arbitrary target loss function.

Abstract:The reaction pp -> pf (eta pi pi) ps has been studied at 450 GeV/c. There is clear evidence for an a2(1320)pi decay mode of the eta2(1645) and eta2(1870). In addition, there is evidence for an a0(980)pi$ decay mode of both resonances and an f2(1270)eta decay mode of the eta2(1870). No evidence is found for a JPC = 2++ a2(1320)pi wave.

Abstract:There is solid consensus among physicists and philosophers that, in gauge field theory, for a quantity to be physically meaningful or real, it must be gauge-invariant. Yet, every "elementary" field in the Standard Model of particle physics is actually gauge-variant. This has led a number of researchers to insist that new manifestly gauge-invariant approaches must be established. Indeed, in the foundational literature, dissatisfaction with standard methods for reducing gauge symmetries has been expressed: Spontaneous symmetry breaking is deemed conceptually dubious, while gauge fixing suffers the same limitations and is subject to the same criticisms as coordinate choices in General Relativity. An alternative gauge-invariant proposal was recently introduced in the literature, the so-called "dressing field method" (DFM). It is a mathematically subtle tool, and unfortunately prone to be confused with simple gauge transformations, hence with standard gauge~fixings. As a matter of fact, in the physics literature the two are often conflated, and in the philosophy community some doubts have been raised about whether there is any substantial difference between them. Clarifying this issue is of special significance for anyone interested in both the foundational issues of gauge theories and their invariant formulation. It is thus our objective to establish as precisely as possible the technical and conceptual distinctions between the DFM and gauge fixing.

Abstract:In this paper, we revisit the Dressing Field Method (DFM) in the context of Quantum (Gauge) Field Theories (QFT). In order to adapt this method to the functional path integral formalism of QFT, we depart from the usual differential geometry approach used so far to study the DFM which also allows to tackle the infinite dimension of the field spaces. Our main result is that gauge fixing is an instance of the application of the DFM. The Faddeev-Popov gauge fixing procedure and the so-called unitary gauge are revisited in light of this result.

Abstract:We discuss the possibility to obtain a massive Landau gauge, based on the local composite operator effective action framework combined with the Zimmermann reduction of couplings prescription. As a way to deal with the gauge ambiguity, we check that the ghost propagator remains positive, a necessary condition for gluon field configurations beyond the Gribov region to be negligible. We pay attention to the Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin invariance of the construction, allowing for a future generalization to a class of massive linear covariant gauges. As a litmus test, we compare our predictions to the lattice data for the two-point functions in Landau gauge introducing the "dynamically infrared-safe" renormalization scheme, including the renormalization group optimization of both the gap equation and the two-point functions. Non-linear gauge-Higgs CP violation

Abstract:A critical element of the LHC physics program is the search for an additional source of CP violation. This is largely unexplored in the context of non-linear Higgs physics, which is naturally described in Higgs Effective Field Theory (HEFT). Relevant new higher-dimensional operators modify the production rate and branching ratios of the Higgs boson, de-correlating different Higgs multiplicities. In this work, we consider single Higgs and Higgs pair production via weak boson fusion from the perspective of gauge-Higgs CP violation through the lens of Higgs non-linearity. This generalizes existing rate-based searches and analyses by the ATLAS and CMS experiments. Particular focus is given to the phenomenological differences in the expected BSM sensitivity pattern when comparing HEFT constraints with Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) limits.

Abstract:We present a novel implementation of the Schwinger mechanism in QCD, which fixes uniquely the scale of the effective gluon mass scale and streamlines considerably the procedure of multiplicative renormalization. The key advantage of this method stems from the nonlinear nature of the dynamical equation that generates massless poles in the longitudinal sector of the three-gluon vertex. An exceptional feature of this approach is an extensive cancellation involving the components of the integral expression that determines the gluon mass scale; it is triggered once the Schwinger–Dyson equation of the pole-free part of the three-gluon vertex has been appropriately exploited. It turns out that this cancellation is driven by the so-called Fredholm alternatives theorem, which operates among the set of integral equations describing this system. Quite remarkably, in the linearized approximation this theorem enforces the exact masslessness of the gluon. Instead, the nonlinearity induced by the full treatment of the relevant kernel evades this theorem, allowing for the emergence of a nonvanishing mass scale. The numerical results obtained from the resulting equations are compatible with the lattice findings, and may be further refined through the inclusion of the remaining fundamental vertices of the theory.

Abstract:Gauge symmetries play a central role, both in the mathematical foundations as well as the conceptual construction of modern (particle) physics theories. However, it is yet unclear whether they form a necessary component of theories, or whether they can be eliminated. It is also unclear whether they are merely an auxiliary tool to simplify (and possibly localize) calculations or whether they contain independent information. Therefore their status, both in physics and philosophy of physics, remains to be fully clarified. In this overview we review the current state of affairs on both the philosophy and the physics side. In particular, we focus on the circumstances in which the restriction of gauge theories to gauge invariant information on an observable level is warranted, using the Brout-Englert-Higgs theory as an example of particular current importance. Finally, we determine a set of yet to be answered questions to clarify the status of gauge symmetries.

A Partially Fixed Background Field Gauge

Abstract:We examine the incorporation of gauge symmetries in the modern effective field theory (EFT) matching paradigm with a particular focus on spontaneously broken symmetries. The presence of gauge symmetries entails the introduction of gauge-fixing terms in matching calculations, which may prevent (partial) cancellation between loops from the underlying theory and those of the EFT, thereby preventing the establishment of a hard-region matching formula. While this is not an issue when using the ordinary background field (BF) gauge for unbroken gauge theories, we find ourselves unable to demonstrate the cancellation with the ordinary BF gauge in spontaneously broken gauge theories. As a convenient alternative, we construct a partially fixed BF gauge that, in addition to being simpler than the ordinary BF gauge, allows us to prove a hard-region matching formula.

Abstract:We derive a Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model from a non-local gauge theory and show that it has confining properties at low energies. In particular, we present an extended approach to non-local QCD and a complete revision of the technique of Bender, Milton and Savage applied to non-local theories, providing a set of Dyson--Schwinger equations in differential form. In the local case, we obtain closed form solutions in the simplest case of the scalar field and extend it to the Yang--Mills field. In general, for non-local theories, we use a perturbative technique and a Fourier series and show how higher-order harmonics are heavily damped due to the presence of the non-local factor. The spectrum of the theory is analysed for the non-local Yang--Mills sector and found to be in agreement with the local results on the lattice in the limit of the non-locality mass parameter running to infinity. In the non-local case, we confine ourselves to a non-locality mass that is sufficiently large compared to the mass scale arising from the integration of the Dyson--Schwinger equations. Such a choice results in good agreement, in the proper limit, with the spectrum of the local theory. We derive the gap equation for the fermions in the theory that gives some indication of quark confinement in the non-local NJL case as well. Confinement seems to be a rather ubiquitous effect that removes some degrees of freedom in the original action, favouring the appearance of new observable states, as seen, e.g.,\ for quantum chromodynamics at lower energies.

Spurious gauge-invariance and $γ_5$ in Dimensional Regularization

Abstract:Dimensional regularization is arguably the most popular and efficient scheme for multi-loop calculations. Yet, when applied to chiral (gauge) theories like the Standard Model and its extensions, one is forced to deal with the infamous "$\gamma_5$ problem". The only formulation that has been demonstrated to be consistent at all orders in perturbation theory, known as Breiteinlhoner-Maison-'t Hooft-Veltman scheme, is rather cumbersome because of the lack of manifest chiral gauge-invariance. In this paper we point out that this drawback can be alleviated by the introduction of auxiliary fields that restore a spurious version of gauge-invariance. If combined with the background field method, all 1PI amplitudes and the associated counterterms are formally covariant and thus severely constrained by the symmetries. As an illustration we evaluate the symmetry-restoring counterterms at 1-loop in the most general renormalizable gauge theory with Dirac fermions and scalar fields, the Standard Model representing a particular example.

Gauge Coupling Unification in Superstring Derived Standard--like Models

Abstract:I discuss gauge coupling unification in a class of superstring standard--like models, which are derived in the free fermionic formulation. Recent calculations indicate that the superstring unification scale is at $O(10^{18}GeV)$ while the minimal supersymmetric standard model is consistent with LEP data if the unification scale is at $O(10^{16})GeV$. A generic feature of the superstring standard--like models is the appearance of extra color triplets $(D,{\bar D})$, and electroweak doublets $(\ell,{\bar\ell})$, in vector--like representations, beyond the minimal supersymmetric standard model. I show that gauge coupling unification at $O(10^{18}GeV)$ in the superstring standard--like models can be consistent with LEP data. I present an explicit standard--like model that can realize superstring gauge coupling unification.
