Abstract:We present a theory of automata with boundary for designing, modelling and analysing distributed systems. Notions of behaviour, design and simulation appropriate to the theory are defined. The problem of model checking for deadlock detection is discussed, and an algorithm for state space reduction in exhaustive search, based on the theory presented here, is described. Three examples of the application of the theory are given, one in the course of the development of the ideas and two as illustrative examples of the use of the theory.

Abstract:The paper is devoted to two types of algebraic models of automata. The usual (first type) model leads to the developed decomposition theory (Krohn-Rhodes theory). We introduce another type of automata model and study how these automata are related to cascade connections of automata of the first type. The introduced automata play a significant role in group theory and, hopefully, in the theory of formal languages.

Abstract:This set of notes re-proves known results on weighted automata (over a field, also known as multiplicity automata). The text offers a unified view on theorems and proofs that have appeared in the literature over decades and were written in different styles and contexts. None of the results reported here are claimed to be new. The content centres around fundamentals of equivalence and minimization, with an emphasis on algorithmic aspects. The presentation is minimalistic. No attempt has been made to motivate the material. Weighted automata are viewed from a linear-algebra angle. As a consequence, the proofs, which are meant to be succinct, but complete and almost self-contained, rely mainly on elementary linear algebra.

Abstract:Stable chaos is a generalization of the chaotic behaviour exhibited by cellular automata to continuous-variable systems and it owes its name to an underlying irregular and yet linearly stable dynamics. In this review we discuss analogies and differences with the usual deterministic chaos and introduce several tools for its characterization. Some examples of transitions from ordered behavior to stable chaos are also analyzed to further clarify the underlying dynamical properties. Finally, two models are specifically discussed: the diatomic hard-point gas chain and a network of globally coupled neurons.

Abstract:Algebraic state space theory (ASST) of logical systems, developed based on the semi-tensor product (STP) which is a new matrix analysis tool built in recent ten years, provides an algebraic analysis approach for many fields of science, such as logical dynamical systems, finite-valued systems, discrete event dynamic systems, and networked game systems. This study focuses on comprehensively surveying the applications of the ASST method to the field of finite state machines (FSMs). Some necessary preliminaries on the method are first reviewed. Then the applications of the method in the FSM field are reviewed, including deterministic FSMs, nondeterministic FSMs, probabilistic FSMs, networked FSMs, and controlled and combined FSMs. In addition, other applications related to both STP and FSMs are surveyed, such as the application of FSM to Boolean control networks and the application of graph theory to FSMs. Finally, some potential research directions with respect to the ASST method in the FSM field are predicted.

Abstract:John Conway proved that every audioactive sequence (a.k.a. look-and-say) decays into a compound of 94~elements, a statement he termed the cosmological theorem. The underlying audioactive process can be modeled by a finite-state machine, mapping one sequence of integers to another. Leveraging automata theory, we propose a new proof of Conway's theorem based on a few simple machines, using a computer to compose and minimize them.

Abstract:An automata network (AN) is a finite graph where each node holds a state from a finite alphabet and is equipped with a local map defining the evolution of the state of the node depending on its neighbors. They are studied both from the dynamical and the computational complexity point of view. Inspired from well-established notions in the context of cellular automata, we develop a theory of intrinsic simulations and universality for families of automata networks. We establish many consequences of intrinsic universality in terms of complexity of orbits (periods of attractors, transients, etc) as well as hardness of the standard well-studied decision problems for automata networks (short/long term prediction, reachability, etc). In the way, we prove orthogonality results for these problems: the hardness of a single one does not imply hardness of the others, while intrinsic universality implies hardness of all of them. We also compare our notions of universality to intrinsic universality of cellular automata. This paper is the first of a series of three: in the second one, we develop a proof technique to establish intrinsic universality based on an operation of glueing; in the third one we study the effect of update schedules on intrinsic universality for concrete symmetric families of automata networks.

Abstract:An introductory formal languages course exposes advanced undergraduate and early graduate students to automata theory, grammars, constructive proofs, computability, and decidability. Programming students find these topics to be challenging or, in many cases, overwhelming and on the fringe of Computer Science. The existence of this perception is not completely absurd since students are asked to design and prove correct machines and grammars without being able to experiment nor get immediate feedback, which is essential in a learning context. This article puts forth the thesis that the theory of computation ought to be taught using tools for actually building computations. It describes the implementation and the classroom use of a library, FSM, designed to provide students with the opportunity to experiment and test their designs using state machines, grammars, and regular expressions. Students are able to perform random testing before proceeding with a formal proof of correctness. That is, students can test their designs much like they do in a programming course. In addition, the library easily allows students to implement the algorithms they develop as part of the constructive proofs they write. Providing students with this ability ought to be a new trend in the formal languages classroom.

Abstract:Many methods for the verification of complex computer systems require the existence of a tractable mathematical abstraction of the system, often in the form of an automaton. In reality, however, such a model is hard to come up with, in particular manually. Automata learning is a technique that can automatically infer an automaton model from a system -- by observing its behaviour. The majority of automata learning algorithms is based on the so-called L* algorithm. The acceptor learned by L* has an important property: it is canonical, in the sense that, it is, up to isomorphism, the unique deterministic finite automaton of minimal size accepting a given regular language. Establishing a similar result for other classes of acceptors, often with side-effects, is of great practical importance. Non-deterministic finite automata, for instance, can be exponentially more succinct than deterministic ones, allowing verification to scale. Unfortunately, identifying a canonical size-minimal non-deterministic acceptor of a given regular language is in general not possible: it can happen that a regular language is accepted by two non-isomorphic non-deterministic finite automata of minimal size. In particular, it thus is unclear which one of the automata should be targeted by a learning algorithm. In this thesis, we further explore the issue and identify (sub-)classes of acceptors that admit canonical size-minimal representatives.

Abstract:This paper shows how the use of Structural Operational Semantics (SOS) in the style popularized by the process-algebra community can lead to a more succinct and useful construction for building finite automata from regular expressions. Such constructions have been known for decades, and form the basis for the proofs of one direction of Kleene's Theorem. The purpose of the new construction is, on the one hand, to show students how small automata can be constructed, without the need for empty transitions, and on the other hand to show how the construction method admits closure proofs of regular languages with respect to other operators as well. These results, while not theoretically surprising, point to an additional influence of process-algebraic research: in addition to providing fundamental insights into the nature of concurrent computation, it also sheds new light on old, well-known constructions in automata theory.

Abstract:We prove the equivalence of two classes of counter machines and one class of distributed automata. Our counter machines operate on finite words, which they read from left to right while incrementing or decrementing a fixed number of counters. The two classes differ in the extra features they offer: one allows to copy counter values, whereas the other allows to compute copyless sums of counters. Our distributed automata, on the other hand, operate on directed path graphs that represent words. All nodes of a path synchronously execute the same finite-state machine, whose state diagram must be acyclic except for self-loops, and each node receives as input the state of its direct predecessor. These devices form a subclass of linear-time one-way cellular automata.

Abstract:Regular languages - the languages accepted by deterministic finite automata - are known to be precisely the languages recognized by finite monoids. This characterization is the origin of algebraic language theory. In the present paper, we generalize this result to automata with computational effects given by a monad, thereby providing the foundations of an effectful algebraic language theory. Our prime application is a novel algebraic approach to languages computed by probabilistic finite automata, which are shown to coincide with (1) languages recognized by finite monoids via probabilistic monoid morphisms, and (2) languages recognized by convex monoids based on finitely generated convex sets. Further characterizations are derived for nondeterministic probabilistic finite automata, and weighted finite automata over arbitrary semirings.

A Unified Automata-Theoretic Approach to LTLf Modulo Theories (Extended Version)

Abstract:We present a novel automata-based approach to address linear temporal logic modulo theory (LTL-MT) as a specification language for data words. LTL-MT extends LTL_f by replacing atomic propositions with quantifier-free multi-sorted first-order formulas interpreted over arbitrary theories. While standard LTL_f is reduced to finite automata, we reduce LTL-MT to symbolic data-word automata (SDWAs), whose transitions are guarded by constraints from underlying theories. Both the satisfiability of LTL-MT and the emptiness of SDWAs are undecidable, but the latter can be reduced to a system of constrained Horn clauses, which are supported by efficient solvers and ongoing research efforts. We discuss multiple applications of our approach beyond satisfiability, including model checking and runtime monitoring. Finally, a set of empirical experiments shows that our approach to satisfiability works at least as well as a previous custom solution.

We discuss variants of automatic structures related to several models of computation: word automata, tree automata, Buchi automata, and Rabin automata. Word automata process finite strings, tree automata process finite labeled trees, Buchi automata process infinite strings, and Rabin automata process infinite binary labeled trees. Automatic structures are mathematical objects which can be represented by (word, tree, Buchi, or Rabin) automata. The study of properties of automatic structures is a relatively new and very active area of research.

Abstract:In this work, we shall present some arithmetical and topological properties of Ising automata. More precisely, we shall study many different notions, such as faithful and strictly faithful automata, factor and product automata, irreducible and weakly irreducible automata, prime automata, homogeneous automata, minimal automata, invertible automata, etc., and discuss their related properties. We shall also define and study three different topologies over the set of all minimal automata, and discuss the topological closure property of automatic sequences. As application, we shall use the obtained results to give a somewhat detailed analysis of Ising automata.
