Abstract:The dynamics of a linear dynamical system over a finite field can be described by using the elementary divisors of the corresponding matrix. It is natural to extend the investigation to a general finite commutative ring. In a previous publication, the last two authors developed an efficient algorithm to determine whether a linear dynamical system over a finite commutative ring is a fixed point system or not. The algorithm can also be used to reduce the problem of finding the cycles of such a system to the case where the system is given by an automorphism. Here, we further analyze the cycle structure of such a system and develop a method to determine its cycles.

Abstract:The dynamics by iteration of a function on a compact metric space, sometimes called a cascade, can be extended to the dynamics of a closed relation on such a space. Here we apply this relation dynamics to study semiflows (and their relation extension) as well as hybrid dynamical systems which combine both continuous time and discrete time dynamics. In a unified way we describe the attractor-repeller structure, Conley's chain recurrence relation and the construction of Lyapunov functions for all of these systems.

Abstract:In this paper we study the monomial dynamical systems of dimension one over finite fields from the viewpoints of arithmetic and graph theory. We give formulas for the number of periodic points with period r and cycles with length r. Then we compute the natural distributions of periodic points and cycles. We also define and compute the Dirichlet distributions of periodic points and cycles. Especially, we associate the monomial dynamical systems with function fields to compute distributions.

Abstract:We study the computational complexity theory of smooth, finite-dimensional dynamical systems. Building off of previous work, we give definitions for what it means for a smooth dynamical system to simulate a Turing machine. We then show that 'chaotic' dynamical systems (more precisely, Axiom A systems) and 'integrable' dynamical systems (more generally, measure-preserving systems) cannot robustly simulate universal Turing machines, although such machines can be robustly simulated by other kinds of dynamical systems. Subsequently, we show that any Turing machine that can be encoded into a structurally stable one-dimensional dynamical system must have a decidable halting problem, and moreover an explicit time complexity bound in instances where it does halt. More broadly, our work elucidates what it means for one 'machine' to simulate another, and emphasizes the necessity of defining low-complexity 'encoders' and 'decoders' to translate between the dynamics of the simulation and the system being simulated. We highlight how the notion of a computational dynamical system leads to questions at the intersection of computational complexity theory, dynamical systems theory, and real algebraic geometry.

Abstract:Dynamical compactness with respect to a family as a new concept of chaoticity of a dynamical system was introduced and discussed in [22]. In this paper we continue to investigate this notion. In particular, we prove that all dynamical systems are dynamically compact with respect to a Furstenberg family if and only if this family has the finite intersection property. We investigate weak mixing and weak disjointness by using the concept of dynamical compactness. We also explore further difference between transitive compactness and weak mixing. As a byproduct, we show that the $\omega_{\mathcal{F}}$-limit and the $\omega$-limit sets of a point may have quite different topological structure. Moreover, the equivalence between multi-sensitivity, sensitive compactness and transitive sensitivity is established for a minimal system. Finally, these notions are also explored in the context of linear dynamics.

Abstract:This paper discusses the observability of nonlinear Dynamical Systems over Finite Fields (DSFF) through the Koopman operator framework. In this work, given a nonlinear DSFF, we construct a linear system of the smallest dimension, called the Linear Output Realization (LOR), which can generate all the output sequences of the original nonlinear system through proper choices of initial conditions (of the associated LOR). We provide necessary and sufficient conditions for the observability of a nonlinear system and establish that the maximum number of outputs sufficient for computing the initial condition is precisely equal to the dimension of the LOR. Further, when the system is not known to be observable, we provide necessary and sufficient conditions for the unique reconstruction of initial conditions for specific output sequences.

Abstract:This article investigates the synchronization problem of networks over finite fields. First, based on the finite-field synchronizable property of matrices, a necessary and sufficient condition is derived for finite-field synchronous networks. Then, the inverse recursion subspaces of networks over finite fields are studied. It is revealed that the synchronization of finite-field networks can be determined by a fraction of states. Finally, as an application, the obtained results are generalized to a class of Boolean networks.

Abstract:We consider the formal languages generated from kneading sequences (KS) in unimodal maps on an interval. The usefulness of an equivalence relation R(L) and the Myhill-Nerode theorem in dynamical systems has been explored. A necessary and sufficient condition for the languages being regular is proved. The minimal DFA for periodic KS is determined. A simple proof is provided to show that the language of the Feigenbaum attractor is not regular.

Abstract:In this paper we present an introduction to the area of computability in dynamical systems. This is a fairly new field which has received quite some attention in recent years. One of the central questions in this area is if relevant dynamical objects can be algorithmically presented by a Turing machine. After providing an overview of the relevant objects we discuss recent results concerning the computability of the entropy for symbolic systems and the computability of Julia sets as well as their Brolin-Lyubich measures.

Abstract:We introduce a finite automata model for performing computations over an arbitrary structure $\mathcal S$ . The automaton processes sequences of elements in $\mathcal S$ . While processing the sequence, the automaton tests atomic relations, performs atomic operations of the structure $\mathcal S$ , and makes state transitions. In this setting, we study several problems such as closure properties, validation problem and emptiness problems. We investigate the dependence of deciding these problems on the underlying structures and the number of registers of our model of automata. Our investigation demonstrates that some of these properties are related to the existential first order fragments of the underlying structures.

Abstract:This paper investigates the synchronization problems for general high-dimensional linear networks over finite fields. By using the technique of linear transformations and invariant subspaces for linear spaces over finite fields, several necessary and sufficient conditions for the synchronization of high-dimensional linear networks over finite fields are proposed. This paper not only generalizes the existing results from 1-dimensional to high-dimensional linear networks but also adopts a new approach. Finally, some numerical examples are given to illustrate the effectiveness of our theoretical results.

We give a complete characterization of which dynamical systems over $\mathbb{P}^{1}$ descend to the field of moduli.

Abstract:Discrete models have a long tradition in engineering, including finite state machines, Boolean networks, Petri nets, and agent-based models. Of particular importance is the question of how the model structure constrains its dynamics. This paper discusses an algebraic framework to study such questions. The systems discussed here are given by mappings on an affine space over a finite field, whose coordinate functions are polynomials. They form a general class of models which can represent many discrete model types. Assigning to such a system its dependency graph, that is, the directed graph that indicates the variable dependencies, provides a mapping from systems to graphs. A basic property of this mapping is derived and used to prove that dynamical systems with an acyclic dependency graph can only have a unique fixed point in their phase space and no periodic orbits. This result is then applied to a published model of in vitro virus competition.

Abstract:Starting from a 2-unimodular group, we construct its new Lie algebras for which the positive-order Lax pairs and the negative-order Lax pairs are introduced, respectively. With the help of the resulting structure equation of the group we generate some partial differential equations including the well-known MKdV equation, the sine-Gordon equation, the hyperbolic sine-Gordon equation and other new nonlinear evolution equations. With the aid of the Tu scheme combined with the given Lax pairs, we obtain the isospectral and nonisospectral hierarchies of evolution equations, from which we generate two sets of symmetries of a generalized nonlinear Schrodinger (gNLS) equation. Finally, we discretize the Lax pairs to obtain a set of coupled semi-discrete equations. As their reduction, we produce the semi-discrete MKdV equation and semi-discrete NLS equation.

Abstract:An S-adic system is a symbolic dynamical system generated by iterating an infinite sequence of substitutions or morphisms, called a directive sequence. A finitary S-adic dynamical system is one where the directive sequence consists of morphisms selected from a finite set. We study eigenvalues and coboundaries for finitary recognizable S-adic dynamical systems, i.e., those where points can be uniquely desubstituted using the given sequence of morphisms. To do this we identify the notions of straightness and essential words, and use them to define a coboundary, inspired by of Host's formalism, which allows us to express necessary and sufficient conditions that a complex number must satisfy in order to be a continuous or measurable eigenvalue. We then apply our results to finitary directive sequences of substitutions of constant length, and show how to create constant-length $S$-adic shifts with non-trivial coboundaries. We show that in this case all continuous eigenvalues are rational and we give a complete description of the rationals that can be an eigenvalue, indicating how this leads to a Cobham-style result for these systems.

Abstract:A linear (partial) functional system consists of linear partial differential, difference equations or any mixture thereof. We present an algorithm that determines whether linear functional systems are ∂-finite, and transforms ∂-finite systems to fully integrable ones.
