Abstract:This paper shows how the use of Structural Operational Semantics (SOS) in the style popularized by the process-algebra community can lead to a more succinct and useful construction for building finite automata from regular expressions. Such constructions have been known for decades, and form the basis for the proofs of one direction of Kleene's Theorem. The purpose of the new construction is, on the one hand, to show students how small automata can be constructed, without the need for empty transitions, and on the other hand to show how the construction method admits closure proofs of regular languages with respect to other operators as well. These results, while not theoretically surprising, point to an additional influence of process-algebraic research: in addition to providing fundamental insights into the nature of concurrent computation, it also sheds new light on old, well-known constructions in automata theory.

Abstract:The behavior and architecture of large scale discrete state systems found in computer software and hardware can be specified and analyzed using a particular class of primitive recursive functions. This paper begins with an illustration of the utility of the method via a number of small examples and then via longer specification and verification of the Paxos distributed consensus algorithm. The sequence maps are then shown to provide an alternative representation of deterministic state machines and algebraic products of state machines. Distributed and composite systems, parallel and concurrent computation, and real-time behavior can all be specified naturally with these methods - which require neither extensions to the classical state machine model nor any axiomatic methods or other techniques from formal methods. Compared to state diagrams or tables or the standard set-tuple-transition-maps, sequence maps are more concise and better suited to describing the behavior and compositional architecture of computer systems. Staying strictly within the boundaries of classical deterministic state machines anchors the methods to the algebraic structures of automata and makes the specifications faithful to engineering practice.

Abstract:A process algebra is proposed, whose semantics maps a term to a nondeterministic finite automaton (NFA, for short). We prove a representability theorem: for each NFA $N$, there exists a process algebraic term $p$ such that its semantics is an NFA isomorphic to $N$. Moreover, we provide a concise axiomatization of language equivalence: two NFAs $N_1$ and $N_2$ recognize the same language if and only if the associated terms $p_1$ and $p_2$, respectively, can be equated by means of a set of axioms, comprising 7 axioms plus 3 conditional axioms, only.

Abstract:The paper is devoted to two types of algebraic models of automata. The usual (first type) model leads to the developed decomposition theory (Krohn-Rhodes theory). We introduce another type of automata model and study how these automata are related to cascade connections of automata of the first type. The introduced automata play a significant role in group theory and, hopefully, in the theory of formal languages.

Abstract:Hybrid automata have been proposed as a language for modelling and analysing the interaction of digital and analogue dynamics in embedded computer systems. In the paper, hybrid automata are studied from a dynamical systems perspective. Extending earlier work on conditions for existence and uniqueness of executions of hybrid automata, we characterise a class of hybrid automata whose executions depend continuously on the initial state. The continuity conditions are subsequently used to derive an extension of LaSalle's principle for studying the stability of invariant sets of states of hybrid automata.

Abstract:Process algebras have been developed within computer science and engineering to address complicated computational and manufacturing problems. The process algebra described herein was inspired by the Process Theory of Whitehead and the theory of combinatorial games, and it was developed to explicitly address issues particular to organisms, which exhibit generativity, becoming, emergence, transience, openness, contextuality, locality, and non-Kolmogorov probability as fundamental characteristics. These features are expressed by neurobehavioural regulatory systems, collective intelligence systems (social insect colonies), and quantum systems as well. The process algebra has been utilized to provide an ontological model of non-relativistic quantum mechanics with locally causal information flow. This paper provides a pedagical review of the mathematics of the process algebra.

Abstract:The well-known process algebras, such as CCS, ACP and $\pi$-calculus, capture the interleaving concurrency based on bisimilarity semantics. We did some work on truly concurrent process algebras, such as CTC, APTC and $\pi_{tc}$, capture the true concurrency based on truly concurrent bisimilarities, such as pomset bisimilarity, step bisimilarity, history-preserving (hp-) bisimilarity and hereditary history-preserving (hhp-) bisimilarity. Truly concurrent process algebras are generalizations of the corresponding traditional process algebras. In this book, we introduce localities into truly concurrent process algebras, based on the work on process algebra with localities.

Abstract:This monograph presents an application of concepts and methods from algebraic topology to models of concurrent processes in computer science and their analysis. Taking well-known discrete models for concurrent processes in resource management as a point of departure, the book goes on to refine combinatorial and topological models. In the process, it develops tools and invariants for the new discipline directed algebraic topology, which is driven by fundamental research interests as well as by applications, primarily in the static analysis of concurrent programs. The state space of a concurrent program is described as a higher-dimensional space, the topology of which encodes the essential properties of the system. In order to analyse all possible executions in the state space, more than “just” the topological properties have to be considered: Execution paths need to respect a partial order given by the time flow. As a result, tools and concepts from topology have to be extended to take privileged directions into account. The target audience for this book consists of graduate students, researchers and practitioners in the field, mathematicians and computer scientists alike.

Abstract:In standard process algebra, parallel components do not share a common state and communicate through synchronisation. The advantage of this type of communication is that it facilitates compositional reasoning. For modelling and analysing systems in which parallel components operate on shared memory, however, the communication-through-synchronisation paradigm is sometimes less convenient. In this paper we study a process algebra with a notion of global variable. We also propose an extension of Hennessy-Milner logic with predicates to test and set the values of the global variables, and prove correspondence results between validity of formulas in the extended logic and stateless bisimilarity and between validity of formulas in the extended logic without the set operator and state-based bisimilarity. We shall also present a translation from the process algebra with global variables to a fragment of mCRL2 that preserves the validity of formulas in the extended Hennessy-Milner logic.

Abstract:A supervisory controller controls and coordinates the behavior of different components of a complex machine by observing their discrete behaviour. Supervisory control theory studies automated synthesis of controller models, known as supervisors, based on formal models of the machine components and a formalization of the requirements. Subsequently, code generation can be used to implement this supervisor in software, on a PLC, or embedded microprocessor. In this article, we take a closer look at the control loop that couples the supervisory controller and the machine. We model both event-based and state-based observations using process algebra and bisimulation-based semantics. The main application area of supervisory control that we consider is coordination, referred to as supervisory coordination, and we give an academic and an industrial example, discussing the process-theoretic concepts employed.

Abstract:Studies of issues related to computability and computational complexity involve the use of a model of computation. Central in such a model are computational processes. Processes of this kind can be described using an imperative process algebra based on ACP (Algebra of Communicating Processes). In this paper, it is investigated whether the imperative process algebra concerned can play a role in the field of models of computation. It is demonstrated that the process algebra is suitable to describe in a mathematically precise way models of computation corresponding to existing models based on sequential, asynchronous parallel, and synchronous parallel random access machines as well as time and work complexity measures for those models.

Abstract:The feasibility and efficiency of analyzing concurrent programs mostly relies on the programs' representations. So modeling concurrent programs in a proper and suitable way is very important. Protected objects, which have been introduced in Ada95, are of significant importance in concurrent programming language. In this paper, process algebra is used to model Ada95 protected objects in a neat and tidy way. Because using process algebra can simplify process composition and conveniently hide internal details, it becomes easy to analyze Ada concurrent programs with protected objects and to combat problems of state explosion. In addition, many mechanisms similar to protected objects can be modeled in this way. With these models, many analyses, such as model checking, can be performed.

Abstract:In this paper we introduced an algebraic semantics for process algebra in form of abstract data types. For that purpose, we developed a particular type of algebra, the seed algebra, which describes exactly the behavior of a process within a labeled transition system. We have shown the possibility of characterizing the bisimulation of two processes with the isomorphism of their corresponding seed algebras. We pointed out that the traditional concept of isomorphism of algebra does not apply here, because there is even no one-one correspondence between the elements of two seed algebras. The lack of this one-one correspondence comes from the non-deterministic choice of transitions of a process. We introduce a technique of hidden operations to mask unwanted details of elements of a seed algebra, which only reflect non-determinism or other implicit control mechanism of process transition. Elements of a seed algebra are considered as indistinguishable if they show the same behavior after these unwanted details are masked. Each class of indistinguishable elements is called a non-hidden closure. We proved that bisimulation of two processes is equivalent to isomorphism of non-hidden closures of two seed algebras representing these two processes. We call this kind of isomorphism a deep isomorphism. We get different models of seed algebra by specifying different axiom systems for the same signature. Each model corresponds to a different kind of bisimulation. By proving the relations between these models we also established relations between 10 different bisimulations, which form a acyclic directed graph.

Abstract:Transition systems can be viewed either as process diagrams or as Kripke structures. The first perspective is that of process theory, the second that of modal logic. This paper shows how various formalisms of modal logic can be brought to bear on processes. Notions of bisimulation can not only be motivated by operations on transition systems but can also be suggested by investigations of modal formalisms. To show that the equational view of processes from process algebra is closely related to modal logic, we consider various ways of looking at the relation between the calculus of basic process algebra and propositional dynamic logic. More concretely, the paper contains preservation results for various bisimulation notions, a result on the expressive power of propositional dynamic logic, and a definition of bisimulation which is the proper notion of invariance for concurrent propositional dynamic logic.

Abstract:We present a theory of automata with boundary for designing, modelling and analysing distributed systems. Notions of behaviour, design and simulation appropriate to the theory are defined. The problem of model checking for deadlock detection is discussed, and an algorithm for state space reduction in exhaustive search, based on the theory presented here, is described. Three examples of the application of the theory are given, one in the course of the development of the ideas and two as illustrative examples of the use of the theory.
