Abstract:Probabilistic game structures combine both nondeterminism and stochasticity, where players repeatedly take actions simultaneously to move to the next state of the concurrent game. Probabilistic alternating simulation is an important tool to compare the behaviour of different probabilistic game structures. In this paper, we present a sound and complete modal characterisation of this simulation relation by proposing a new logic based on probabilistic distributions. The logic enables a player to enforce a property in the next state or distribution. Its extension with fixpoints, which also characterises the simulation relation, can express a lot of interesting properties in practical applications.

Abstract:Scalable and automatic formal verification for concurrent systems is always demanding. In this paper, we propose a verification framework to support automated compositional reasoning for concurrent programs with shared variables. Our framework models concurrent programs as succinct automata and supports the verification of multiple important properties. Safety verification and simulations of succinct automata are parallel compositional, and safety properties of succinct automata are preserved under refinements. We generate succinct automata from infinite state concurrent programs in an automated manner. Furthermore, we propose the first automated approach to checking rely-guarantee based simulations between infinite state concurrent programs. We have prototyped our algorithms and applied our tool to the verification of multiple refinements.

Abstract:Process algebra and temporal logic are two popular paradigms for the specification, verification and systematic development of reactive and concurrent systems. These two approaches take different standpoint for looking at specifications and verifications, and offer complementary advantages. In order to mix algebraic and logic styles of specification in a uniform framework, the notion of a logic labelled transition system (LLTS) has been presented and explored by Luttgen and Vogler. This paper intends to propose a LLTS-oriented process calculus which, in addition to usual process-algebraic operators, involves logic connectives (conjunction and disjunction) and standard temporal operators (always and unless). This calculus preserves usual properties of these logic operators, allows one to freely mix operational and logic operators, and supports compositional reasoning. Moreover, the links between this calculus and Action-based Computation Tree Logic (ACTL) including characteristic formulae of process terms, characteristic processes of ACTL formulae and Galois connection are explored.

Abstract:In standard process algebra, parallel components do not share a common state and communicate through synchronisation. The advantage of this type of communication is that it facilitates compositional reasoning. For modelling and analysing systems in which parallel components operate on shared memory, however, the communication-through-synchronisation paradigm is sometimes less convenient. In this paper we study a process algebra with a notion of global variable. We also propose an extension of Hennessy-Milner logic with predicates to test and set the values of the global variables, and prove correspondence results between validity of formulas in the extended logic and stateless bisimilarity and between validity of formulas in the extended logic without the set operator and state-based bisimilarity. We shall also present a translation from the process algebra with global variables to a fragment of mCRL2 that preserves the validity of formulas in the extended Hennessy-Milner logic.

Abstract:The well-known process algebras, such as CCS, ACP and $\pi$-calculus, capture the interleaving concurrency based on bisimilarity semantics. We did some work on truly concurrent process algebras, such as CTC, APTC and $\pi_{tc}$, capture the true concurrency based on truly concurrent bisimilarities, such as pomset bisimilarity, step bisimilarity, history-preserving (hp-) bisimilarity and hereditary history-preserving (hhp-) bisimilarity. Truly concurrent process algebras are generalizations of the corresponding traditional process algebras. In this book, we introduce localities into truly concurrent process algebras, based on the work on process algebra with localities.

Dependence and Independence for Reversible Process Calculi

Abstract:To refine formal methods for concurrent systems, there are several ways of enriching classical operational semantics of process calculi. One can enable the auditing and undoing of past synchronisations thanks to communication keys, thus easing the study of true concurrency as a by-product. Alternatively, proof labels embed information about the origins of actions in transition labels, facilitating syntactic analysis. Enriching proof labels with keys enables a theory of the relations on transitions and on events based on their labels only. We offer for the first time separate definitions of dependence relation and independence relation, and prove their complementarity on connected transitions instead of postulating it. Leveraging the recent axiomatic approach to reversibility, we prove the canonicity of these relations and provide additional tools to study the relationships between e.g., concurrency and causality on transitions and events. Finally, we make precise the subtle relationship between bisimulations based on both forward and backward transitions, on key ordering, and on dependency preservation, providing a direct definition of History Preserving bisimulation for CCS.

Abstract:Transition systems can be viewed either as process diagrams or as Kripke structures. The first perspective is that of process theory, the second that of modal logic. This paper shows how various formalisms of modal logic can be brought to bear on processes. Notions of bisimulation can not only be motivated by operations on transition systems but can also be suggested by investigations of modal formalisms. To show that the equational view of processes from process algebra is closely related to modal logic, we consider various ways of looking at the relation between the calculus of basic process algebra and propositional dynamic logic. More concretely, the paper contains preservation results for various bisimulation notions, a result on the expressive power of propositional dynamic logic, and a definition of bisimulation which is the proper notion of invariance for concurrent propositional dynamic logic.

Abstract:The concurrent refinement algebra has been developed to support rely/guarantee reasoning about concurrent programs. The algebra supports atomic commands and defines parallel composition as a synchronous operation, as in Milner's SCCS. In order to allow specifications to be combined, the algebra also provides a weak conjunction operation, which is also a synchronous operation that shares many properties with parallel composition. The three main operations, sequential composition, parallel composition and weak conjunction, all respect a (weak) quantale structure over a lattice of commands. Further structure involves combinations of pairs of these operations: sequential/parallel, sequential/weak conjunction and parallel/weak conjunction, each pair satisfying a weak interchange law similar to Concurrent Kleene Algebra. Each of these pairs satisfies a common biquantale structure. Additional structure is added via compatible sets of commands, including tests, atomic commands and pseudo-atomic commands. These allow stronger (equality) interchange and distributive laws. This paper describes the result of restructuring the algebra to better exploit these commonalities. The algebra is implemented in Isabelle/HOL.

Abstract:In this paper we introduced an algebraic semantics for process algebra in form of abstract data types. For that purpose, we developed a particular type of algebra, the seed algebra, which describes exactly the behavior of a process within a labeled transition system. We have shown the possibility of characterizing the bisimulation of two processes with the isomorphism of their corresponding seed algebras. We pointed out that the traditional concept of isomorphism of algebra does not apply here, because there is even no one-one correspondence between the elements of two seed algebras. The lack of this one-one correspondence comes from the non-deterministic choice of transitions of a process. We introduce a technique of hidden operations to mask unwanted details of elements of a seed algebra, which only reflect non-determinism or other implicit control mechanism of process transition. Elements of a seed algebra are considered as indistinguishable if they show the same behavior after these unwanted details are masked. Each class of indistinguishable elements is called a non-hidden closure. We proved that bisimulation of two processes is equivalent to isomorphism of non-hidden closures of two seed algebras representing these two processes. We call this kind of isomorphism a deep isomorphism. We get different models of seed algebra by specifying different axiom systems for the same signature. Each model corresponds to a different kind of bisimulation. By proving the relations between these models we also established relations between 10 different bisimulations, which form a acyclic directed graph.

Reasoning about distributive laws in a concurrent refinement algebra

Abstract:Distributive laws are important for algebraic reasoning in arithmetic and logic. They are equally important for algebraic reasoning about concurrent programs. In existing theories such as Concurrent Kleene Algebra, only partial correctness is handled, and many of its distributive laws are weak, in the sense that they are only refinements in one direction, rather than equalities. The focus of this paper is on strengthening our theory to support the proof of strong distributive laws that are equalities, and in doing so come up with laws that are quite general. Our concurrent refinement algebra supports total correctness by allowing both finite and infinite behaviours. It supports the rely/guarantee approach of Jones by encoding rely and guarantee conditions as rely and guarantee commands. The strong distributive laws may then be used to distribute rely and guarantee commands over sequential compositions and into (and out of) iterations. For handling data refinement of concurrent programs, strong distributive laws are essential.

Abstract:Quantum cryptographic systems have been commercially available, with a striking advantage over classical systems that their security and ability to detect the presence of eavesdropping are provable based on the principles of quantum mechanics. On the other hand, quantum protocol designers may commit much more faults than classical protocol designers since human intuition is much better adapted to the classical world than the quantum world. To offer formal techniques for modeling and verification of quantum protocols, several quantum extensions of process algebra have been proposed. One of the most serious issues in quantum process algebra is to discover a quantum generalization of the notion of bisimulation, which lies in a central position in process algebra, preserved by parallel composition in the presence of quantum entanglement, which has no counterpart in classical computation. Quite a few versions of bisimulation have been defined for quantum processes in the literature, but in the best case they are only proved to be preserved by parallel composition of purely quantum processes where no classical communications are involved. Many quantum cryptographic protocols, however, employ the LOCC (Local Operations and Classical Communications) scheme, where classical communications must be explicitly specified. So, a notion of bisimulation preserved by parallel composition in the circumstance of both classical and quantum communications is crucial for process algebra approach to verification of quantum cryptographic protocols. In this paper we introduce a novel notion of bisimulation for quantum processes and prove that it is congruent with respect to various process algebra combinators including parallel composition even when both classical and quantum communications are present. We also establish some basic algebraic laws for this bisimulation. In particular, we prove uniqueness of the solutions to recursive equations of quantum processes, which provides a powerful proof technique for verifying complex quantum protocols.
Modeling and Verifying Concurrent Programs with Finite Chu Spaces

Abstract:Finite Chu spaces are proposed for the modeling and verification of concurrent programs. In order to model not only typical concurrent behaviors but also modern exception handling and synchronization mechanisms, we design an enriched process algebra of Chu spaces from a practical point of view. To illustrate the power of finite Chu spaces and the process algebra while abstracting away from language-specific details, an imaginary concurrent programming language (ICL) is designed. A denotational semantics of ICL is presented using finite Chu spaces and the enriched process algebra. The valuation functions are fairly straightforward since the carefully designed operators have done much of the job. The enriched process algebra is also used as the specification language for Chu spaces, with which process-algebraic properties can be specified. Verification algorithms are presented with their time complexities discussed.
An Event-based Compositional Reasoning Approach for Concurrent Reactive Systems.

Abstract:Reactive systems are composed of a well defined set of input events that the system reacts with by executing an associated handler to each event. In concurrent environments, event handlers can interact with the execution of other programs such as hardware interruptions in preemptive systems, or other instances of the reactive system in multicore architectures. State of the art rely-guarantee based verification frameworks only focus on imperative programs, being difficult to capture in the rely and guarantee relations interactions with possible infinite sequences of event handlers, and the input arguments to event handlers. In this paper, we propose the formalisation in Isabelle/HOL of an event-based rely-guarantee approach for concurrent reactive systems. We develop a Pi-Core language which incorporates a concurrent imperative and system specification language by `events', and we build a rely-guarantee proof system for Pi-Core and prove its soundness. Our approach can deal with multicore and interruptible concurrency. We use two case studies to show this: an interruptible controller for stepper motors and an ARINC 653 multicore kernel, and prove the functional correctness and preservation of invariants of them in Isabelle/HOL.
