Abstract:We propose a framework grounded in Logic Programming for representing and reasoning about business processes from both the procedural and ontological point of views. In particular, our goal is threefold: (1) define a logical language and a formal semantics for process models enriched with ontology-based annotations; (2) provide an effective inference mechanism that supports the combination of reasoning services dealing with the structural definition of a process model, its behavior, and the domain knowledge related to the participating business entities; (3) implement such a theoretical framework into a process modeling and reasoning platform. To this end we define a process ontology coping with a relevant fragment of the popular BPMN modeling notation. The behavioral semantics of a process is defined as a state transition system by following an approach similar to the Fluent Calculus, and allows us to specify state change in terms of preconditions and effects of the enactment of activities. Then we show how the procedural process knowledge can be seamlessly integrated with the domain knowledge specified by using the OWL 2 RL rule-based ontology language. Our framework provides a wide range of reasoning services, including CTL model checking, which can be performed by using standard Logic Programming inference engines through a goal-oriented, efficient, sound and complete evaluation procedure. We also present a software environment implementing the proposed framework, and we report on an experimental evaluation of the system, whose results are encouraging and show the viability of the approach.

Abstract:The existing approaches to formulate the semantics of probabilistic argumentation are based on the notion of possible world. Given a probabilistic argument graph with n nodes, 2(n) subgraphs are constructed and their extensions under a given semantics are computed. Then, the probability of a set of arguments E being an extension is equal to the sum of the probabilities of all subgraphs each of which has the extension E. Since in many cases, computing the extensions of a subgraph is computationally expensive, these approaches are fundamentally inefficient or infeasible. In order to cope with this problem, the present paper proposes a novel approach to formulate the semantics of probabilistic argumentation by charactering subgraphs w.r.t. an extension. The results show that under some semantics (admissible, complete, stable), the probability of a set of arguments E being an extension can be obtained without computing the extensions of subgraphs, while under some other semantics (preferred, grounded), only partial computation of extensions is needed.

Abstract:Reactive systems are composed of a well defined set of input events that the system reacts with by executing an associated handler to each event. In concurrent environments, event handlers can interact with the execution of other programs such as hardware interruptions in preemptive systems, or other instances of the reactive system in multicore architectures. State of the art rely-guarantee based verification frameworks only focus on imperative programs, being difficult to capture in the rely and guarantee relations interactions with possible infinite sequences of event handlers, and the input arguments to event handlers. In this paper, we propose the formalisation in Isabelle/HOL of an event-based rely-guarantee approach for concurrent reactive systems. We develop a Pi-Core language which incorporates a concurrent imperative and system specification language by `events', and we build a rely-guarantee proof system for Pi-Core and prove its soundness. Our approach can deal with multicore and interruptible concurrency. We use two case studies to show this: an interruptible controller for stepper motors and an ARINC 653 multicore kernel, and prove the functional correctness and preservation of invariants of them in Isabelle/HOL.

Abstract:Transition systems can be viewed either as process diagrams or as Kripke structures. The first perspective is that of process theory, the second that of modal logic. This paper shows how various formalisms of modal logic can be brought to bear on processes. Notions of bisimulation can not only be motivated by operations on transition systems but can also be suggested by investigations of modal formalisms. To show that the equational view of processes from process algebra is closely related to modal logic, we consider various ways of looking at the relation between the calculus of basic process algebra and propositional dynamic logic. More concretely, the paper contains preservation results for various bisimulation notions, a result on the expressive power of propositional dynamic logic, and a definition of bisimulation which is the proper notion of invariance for concurrent propositional dynamic logic.

Abstract:Classical Processes (CP) is a calculus where the proof theory of classical linear logic types communicating processes with mobile channels, a la pi-calculus. Its construction builds on a recent propositions as types correspondence between session types and propositions in linear logic. Desirable properties such as type preservation under reductions and progress come for free from the metatheory of linear logic. We contribute to this research line by extending CP with code mobility. We generalise classical linear logic to capture higher-order (linear) reasoning on proofs, which yields a logical reconstruction of (a variant of) the Higher-Order pi-calculus (HOpi). The resulting calculus is called Classical Higher-Order Processes (CHOP). We explore the metatheory of CHOP, proving that its semantics enjoys type preservation and progress (terms do not get stuck). We also illustrate the expressivity of CHOP through examples, derivable syntax sugar, and an extension to multiparty sessions. Lastly, we define a translation from CHOP to CP, which encodes mobility of process code into reference passing.

Abstract:State-based models of concurrent systems are traditionally considered under a variety of notions of process equivalence. In the particular case of labelled transition systems, these equivalences range from trace equivalence to (strong) bisimilarity, and are organized in what is known as the linear time -- branching time spectrum. A combination of universal coalgebra and graded monads provides a generic framework in which the semantics of concurrency can be parametrized both over the branching type of the underlying transition systems and over the granularity of process equivalence. We show in the present paper that this framework of graded semantics does subsume the most important equivalences from the linear time -- branching time spectrum. An important feature of graded semantics is that it allows for the principled extraction of characteristic modal logics. We have established invariance of these graded logics under the given graded semantics in earlier work; in the present paper, we extend the logical framework with an explicit propositional layer and provide a generic expressiveness criterion that generalizes the classical Hennessy-Milner theorem to coarser notions of process equivalence. We extract graded logics for a range of graded semantics on labelled transition systems and probabilistic systems, and give exemplaric proofs of their expressiveness based on our generic criterion.

Abstract:The approach to reasoning about structural operational semantics style specifications supported by the Abella system is discussed. This approach uses lambda tree syntax to treat object language binding and encodes binding related properties in generic judgments. Further, object language specifications are embedded directly into the reasoning framework through recursive definitions. The treatment of binding via generic judgments implicitly enforces distinctness and atomicity in the names used for bound variables. These properties must, however, be made explicit in reasoning tasks. This objective can be achieved by allowing recursive definitions to also specify generic properties of atomic predicates. The utility of these various logical features in the Abella system is demonstrated through actual reasoning tasks. Brief comparisons with a few other logic based approaches are also made.

Abstract:Formal, mathematically rigorous programming language semantics are the essential prerequisite for the design of logics and calculi that permit automated reasoning about concurrent programs. We propose a novel modular semantics designed to align smoothly with program logics used in deductive verification and formal specification of concurrent programs. Our semantics separates local evaluation of expressions and statements performed in an abstract, symbolic environment from their composition into global computations, at which point they are concretised. This makes incremental addition of new language concepts possible, without the need to revise the framework. The basis is a generalisation of the notion of a program trace as a sequence of evolving states that we enrich with event descriptors and trailing continuation markers. This allows to postpone scheduling constraints from the level of local evaluation to the global composition stage, where well-formedness predicates over the event structure declaratively characterise a wide range of concurrency models. We also illustrate how a sound program logic and calculus can be defined for this semantics.

Dependence and Independence for Reversible Process Calculi

Abstract:To refine formal methods for concurrent systems, there are several ways of enriching classical operational semantics of process calculi. One can enable the auditing and undoing of past synchronisations thanks to communication keys, thus easing the study of true concurrency as a by-product. Alternatively, proof labels embed information about the origins of actions in transition labels, facilitating syntactic analysis. Enriching proof labels with keys enables a theory of the relations on transitions and on events based on their labels only. We offer for the first time separate definitions of dependence relation and independence relation, and prove their complementarity on connected transitions instead of postulating it. Leveraging the recent axiomatic approach to reversibility, we prove the canonicity of these relations and provide additional tools to study the relationships between e.g., concurrency and causality on transitions and events. Finally, we make precise the subtle relationship between bisimulations based on both forward and backward transitions, on key ordering, and on dependency preservation, providing a direct definition of History Preserving bisimulation for CCS.

Abstract:This paper combines the classical model of labeled transition systems with the epistemic model for reasoning about knowledge. The result is a unifying framework for modeling and analyzing multi-agent, knowledge-based, dynamic systems. On the modeling side, we propose a process algebraic, agent-oriented specification language that makes such a framework easy to use for practical purposes. On the verification side, we define a modal logic encompassing temporal and epistemic operators.

Abstract:In this paper we introduced an algebraic semantics for process algebra in form of abstract data types. For that purpose, we developed a particular type of algebra, the seed algebra, which describes exactly the behavior of a process within a labeled transition system. We have shown the possibility of characterizing the bisimulation of two processes with the isomorphism of their corresponding seed algebras. We pointed out that the traditional concept of isomorphism of algebra does not apply here, because there is even no one-one correspondence between the elements of two seed algebras. The lack of this one-one correspondence comes from the non-deterministic choice of transitions of a process. We introduce a technique of hidden operations to mask unwanted details of elements of a seed algebra, which only reflect non-determinism or other implicit control mechanism of process transition. Elements of a seed algebra are considered as indistinguishable if they show the same behavior after these unwanted details are masked. Each class of indistinguishable elements is called a non-hidden closure. We proved that bisimulation of two processes is equivalent to isomorphism of non-hidden closures of two seed algebras representing these two processes. We call this kind of isomorphism a deep isomorphism. We get different models of seed algebra by specifying different axiom systems for the same signature. Each model corresponds to a different kind of bisimulation. By proving the relations between these models we also established relations between 10 different bisimulations, which form a acyclic directed graph.

From Compactifying Lambda-Letrec Terms to Recognizing Regular-Expression Processes

Abstract:As a supplement to my talk at the workshop, this extended abstract motivates and summarizes my work with co-authors on problems in two separate areas: first, in the lambda-calculus with letrec, a universal model of computation, and second, on Milner's process interpretation of regular expressions, a proper subclass of the finite-state processes. The aim of my talk was to motivate a transferal of ideas for workable concepts of structure-constrained graphs: from the problem of finding compact graph representations for terms in the lambda-calculus with letrec to the problem of recognizing finite process graphs that can be expressed by regular expressions. In both cases the construction of structure-constrained graphs was expedient in order to enable to go back and forth easily between, in the first case, lambda-terms and term graphs, and in the second case, regular expressions and process graphs. The main focus here is on providing pointers to my work with co-authors, in both areas separately. A secondary focus is on explaining directions of my present projects, and describing research questions of possibly general interest that have developed out of my work in these two areas.
