Abstract:Classical modular forms on the upper half plane, with respect to the modular group SL(2,Z) and its congruence subgroups, have arisen naturally in number theory, complex analysis, topology, mathematical physics, and many other subjects. The closely related automorphic representations are basic notions in the celebrated Langlands program, which was proposed by Langlands in the late 1960s and has since revolutionized the fields of number theory, arithmetic algebraic geometry, and representation theory. This volume consists of expanded lecture notes from a 2007 international conference in Guangzhou, China, at which several leading experts in number theory presented introductions to, and surveys of, many aspects of automorphic forms and the Langlands program. The concept of weighted tree automata is part of Automata Theory and it touches the area of Universal Algebra. Abstract:Engelfriet and Vereijken have shown that linear graph grammars based on hyperedge replacement generate graph languages that can be considered as interpretations of regular string languages over typed symbols. In this paper we show that finite automata can be lifted from strings to graphs within the same framework. For the efficient recognition of graphs with these automata, we make them deterministic by a modified powerset construction, and state sufficient conditions under which deterministic finite graph automata recognize graphs without the need to use backtracking.

Abstract:A new technique is presented to prove non-termination of term rewriting. The basic idea is to find a non-empty regular language of terms that is closed under rewriting and does not contain normal forms. It is automated by representing the language by a tree automaton with a fixed number of states, and expressing the mentioned requirements in a SAT formula. Satisfiability of this formula implies non-termination. Our approach succeeds for many examples where all earlier techniques fail, for instance for the S-rule from combinatory logic.

Nominal Tree Automata With Name Allocation

Abstract:Data trees serve as an abstraction of structured data, such as XML documents. A number of specification formalisms for languages of data trees have been developed, many of them adhering to the paradigm of register automata, which is based on storing data values encountered on the tree in registers for subsequent comparison with further data values. Already on word languages, the expressiveness of such automata models typically increases with the power of control (e.g. deterministic, non-deterministic, alternating). Language inclusion is typically undecidable for non-deterministic or alternating models unless the number of registers is radically restricted, and even then often remains non-elementary. We present an automaton model for data trees that retains a reasonable level of expressiveness, in particular allows non-determinism and any number of registers, while admitting language inclusion checking in elementary complexity, in fact in parametrized exponential time. We phrase the description of our automaton model in the language of nominal sets, building on the recently introduced paradigm of explicit name allocation in nominal automata.

Abstract:Tree-controlled grammars are context-free grammars where the derivation process is controlled in such a way that every word on a level of the derivation tree must belong to a certain control language. We investigate the generative capacity of such tree-controlled grammars where the control languages are special regular sets, especially strictly locally testable languages or languages restricted by resources of the generation (number of non-terminal symbols or production rules) or acceptance (number of states). Furthermore, the set theoretic inclusion relations of these subregular language families themselves are studied.

Abstract:A lattice Delaunay polytope is known as perfect if the only ellipsoid, that can be circumscribed about it, is its Delaunay sphere. Perfect Delaunay polytopes are in one-to-one correspondence with arithmetic equivalence classes of positive quadratic functions on the n-dimensional integral lattice that can be recovered, up to a scale factor, from the representations of its minimum. We develop a structural theory of such polytopes and describe all known perfect Delaunay polytopes in dimensions one through eight. We suspect that this list is complete.

Regular Grammars for Graph Sets of Tree-Width $\leq2$

Abstract:Regular and context-free languages form a central pillar of formal language theory. This is because a variety of formalisms are known that define these classes of languages. For example, we have that finite automata, monoids, algebraic recognizability, regular expressions, regular grammars, monadic-second order logic, etc., can be used to represent regular word languages. However, the situation is less clear for formal languages over graphs, and open problems persist. This is because generalizing notions from words to graphs has been more successful for some of the cited formalisms than for the other ones. Bruno Courcelle has introduced hyper-edge replacement (\hr) algebras for generalizing the notion of context-free languages from words to graphs. At the same time, \hr-algebras support the generalization of algebraic recognizability from words to graphs, a notion that has been proven to be equivalent to definability in (counting) monadic-second order logic (\cmso) over graphs of bounded tree-width. In this paper, we deal with generalizing regular word grammars to graphs. We propose regular grammars for (unordered and unranked) trees, series-parallel graphs, and graphs of tree-width $\le 2$, where the qualifier regular is justified because these grammars define exactly the recognizable resp. \cmso-definable subsets of the respective graph classes.

Abstract:In this paper we describe an approach to constraint-based syntactic theories in terms of finite tree automata. The solutions to constraints expressed in weak monadic second order (MSO) logic are represented by tree automata recognizing the assignments which make the formulas true. We show that this allows an efficient representation of knowledge about the content of constraints which can be used as a practical tool for grammatical theory verification. We achieve this by using the intertranslatability of formulas of MSO logic and tree automata and the embedding of MSO logic into a constraint logic programming scheme. The usefulness of the approach is discussed with examples from the realm of Principles-and-Parameters based parsing.

Profinite trees, through monads and the lambda-calculus

Abstract:In its simplest form, the theory of regular languages is the study of sets of finite words recognized by finite monoids. The finiteness condition on monoids gives rise to a topological space whose points, called profinite words, encode the limiting behavior of words with respect to finite monoids. Yet, some aspects of the theory of regular languages are not particular to monoids and can be described in a general setting. On the one hand, Bojańczyk has shown how to use monads to generalize the theory of regular languages and has given an abstract definition of the free profinite structure, defined by codensity, given a fixed monad and a notion of finite structure. On the other hand, Salvati has introduced the notion of language of $\lambda$-terms, using denotational semantics, which generalizes the case of words and trees through the Church encoding. In recent work, the author and collaborators defined the notion of profinite $\lambda$-term using semantics in finite sets and functions, which extend the Church encoding to profinite words.

Abstract:This paper grew out of three tutorial lectures on automatic structures given by the first author at the Logic Colloquium 2007. We discuss variants of automatic structures related to several models of computation: word automata, tree automata, Buchi automata, and Rabin automata. Word automata process finite strings, tree automata process finite labeled trees, Buchi automata process infinite strings, and Rabin automata process infinite binary labeled trees. Automatic structures are mathematical objects which can be represented by (word, tree, Buchi, or Rabin) automata. The study of properties of automatic structures is a relatively new and very active area of research.

Abstract:Multiple (simple) context-free tree grammars are investigated, where “simple” means “linear and nondeleting”. Every multiple context-free tree grammar that is finitely ambiguous can be lexicalized; i.e., it can be transformed into an equivalent one (generating the same tree language) in which each rule of the grammar contains a lexical symbol. Due to this transformation, the rank of the nonterminals increases at most by 1, and the multiplicity (or fan-out) of the grammar increases at most by the maximal rank of the lexical symbols; in particular, the multiplicity does not increase when all lexical symbols have rank 0. Multiple context-free tree grammars have the same tree generating power as multi-component tree adjoining grammars (provided the latter can use a root-marker). Moreover, every multi-component tree adjoining grammar that is finitely ambiguous can be lexicalized. Multiple context-free tree grammars have the same string generating power as multiple context-free (string) grammars and polynomial time parsing algorithms. A tree language can be generated by a multiple context-free tree grammar if and only if it is the image of a regular tree language under a deterministic finite-copying macro tree transducer. Multiple context-free tree grammars can be used as a synchronous translation device.

Tree-Verifiable Graph Grammars

Abstract:Hyperedge-Replacement grammars (HR) have been introduced by Courcelle in order to extend the notion of context-free sets from words and trees to graphs of bounded tree-width. While for words and trees the syntactic restrictions that guarantee that the associated languages of words resp. trees are regular - and hence, MSO-definable - are known, the situation is far more complicated for graphs. Here, Courcelle proposed the notion of regular graph grammars, a syntactic restriction of HR grammars that guarantees the definability of the associated languages of graphs in Counting Monadic Second Order Logic (CMSO). However, these grammars are not complete in the sense that not every CMSO-definable set of graphs of bounded tree-width can be generated by a regular graph grammar. In this paper, we introduce a new syntactic restriction of HR grammars, called tree-verifiable graph grammars, and a new notion of bounded tree-width, called embeddable bounded tree-width, where the later restricts the trees of a tree-decomposition to be a subgraph of the analyzed graph. The main property of tree-verifiable graph grammars is that their associated languages are CMSO-definable and that the have bounded embeddable tree-width. We show further that they strictly generalize the regular graph grammars of Courcelle. Finally, we establish a completeness result, showing that every language of graphs that is CMSO-definable and of bounded embeddable tree-width can be generated by a tree-verifiable graph grammar.

Coalgebraic Automata Theory: Basic Results

Abstract:We generalize some of the central results in automata theory to the abstraction level of coalgebras and thus lay out the foundations of a universal theory of automata operating on infinite objects. Let F be any set functor that preserves weak pullbacks. We show that the class of recognizable languages of F-coalgebras is closed under taking unions, intersections, and projections. We also prove that if a nondeterministic F-automaton accepts some coalgebra it accepts a finite one of the size of the automaton. Our main technical result concerns an explicit construction which transforms a given alternating F-automaton into an equivalent nondeterministic one, whose size is exponentially bound by the size of the original automaton.

Using Tree Automata and Regular Expressions to Manipulate Hierarchically Structured Data

Abstract:Information, stored or transmitted in digital form, is often structured. Individual data records are usually represented as hierarchies of their elements. Together, records form larger structures. Information processing applications have to take account of this structuring, which assigns different semantics to different data elements or records. Big variety of structural schemata in use today often requires much flexibility from applications--for example, to process information coming from different sources. To ensure application interoperability, translators are needed that can convert one structure into another. This paper puts forward a formal data model aimed at supporting hierarchical data processing in a simple and flexible way. The model is based on and extends results of two classical theories, studying finite string and tree automata. The concept of finite automata and regular languages is applied to the case of arbitrarily structured tree-like hierarchical data records, represented as "structured strings." These automata are compared with classical string and tree automata; the model is shown to be a superset of the classical models. Regular grammars and expressions over structured strings are introduced. Regular expression matching and substitution has been widely used for efficient unstructured text processing; the model described here brings the power of this proven technique to applications that deal with information trees. A simple generic alternative is offered to replace today's specialised ad-hoc approaches. The model unifies structural and content transformations, providing applications with a single data type. An example scenario of how to build applications based on this theory is discussed. Further research directions are outlined.

Automata-Theoretic Characterisations of Branching-Time Temporal Logics

Abstract:Characterisations theorems serve as important tools in model theory and can be used to assess and compare the expressive power of temporal languages used for the specification and verification of properties in formal methods. While complete connections have been established for the linear-time case between temporal logics, predicate logics, algebraic models, and automata, the situation in the branching-time case remains considerably more fragmented. In this work, we provide an automata-theoretic characterisation of some important branching-time temporal logics, namely CTL* and ECTL* interpreted on arbitrary-branching trees, by identifying two variants of Hesitant Tree Automata that are proved equivalent to those logics. The characterisations also apply to Monadic Path Logic and the bisimulation-invariant fragment of Monadic Chain Logic, again interpreted over trees. These results widen the characterisation landscape of the branching-time case and solve a forty-year-old open question.

Global One-Counter Tree Automata

Abstract:We introduce global one-counter tree automata (GOCTA) which deviate from usual counter tree automata by working on only one counter which is passed through the tree in lexicographical order, rather than duplicating the counter at every branching position. We compare the capabilities of GOCTA to those of counter tree automata and obtain that their classes of recognizable tree languages are incomparable. Moreover, we show that the emptiness problem of GOCTA is undecidable while, in stark contrast, their membership problem is in P.

Abstract:Regular languages - the languages accepted by deterministic finite automata - are known to be precisely the languages recognized by finite monoids. This characterization is the origin of algebraic language theory. In the present paper, we generalize this result to automata with computational effects given by a monad, thereby providing the foundations of an effectful algebraic language theory. Our prime application is a novel algebraic approach to languages computed by probabilistic finite automata, which are shown to coincide with (1) languages recognized by finite monoids via probabilistic monoid morphisms, and (2) languages recognized by convex monoids based on finitely generated convex sets. Further characterizations are derived for nondeterministic probabilistic finite automata, and weighted finite automata over arbitrary semirings.

Arbitrary-arity Tree Automata and QCTL

Abstract:We introduce a new class of automata (which we coin EU-automata) running on infininte trees of arbitrary (finite) arity. We develop and study several algorithms to perform classical operations (union, intersection, complement, projection, alternation removal) for those automata, and precisely characterise their complexities. We also develop algorithms for solving membership and emptiness for the languages of trees accepted by EU-automata. We then use EU-automata to obtain several algorithmic and expressiveness results for the temporal logic QCTL (which extends CTL with quantification over atomic propositions) and for MSO. On the one hand, we obtain decision procedures with optimal complexity for QCTL satisfiability and model checking; on the other hand, we obtain an algorithm for translating any QCTL formula with k quantifier alternations to formulas with at most one quantifier alternation, at the expense of a $(k + 1)$-exponential blow-up in the size of the formulas. Using the same techniques, we prove that any MSO formula can be translated into a formula with at most four quantifier alternations (and only two second-order-quantifier alternations), again with a $(k + 1)$-exponential blow-up in the size of the formula.

Abstract:You might know that the name "tree transducers" refers to various kinds of automata that compute functions on ranked trees, i.e. terms over a first-order signature. But have you ever wondered about how to remember what a macro tree transducer does? Or what are the connections between top-down tree(-to-string) transducers, multi bottom-up tree(-to-string) transducers, tree-walking transducers, (invisible) pebble tree transducers, monadic second-order transductions, unfoldings of rooted directed acyclic graphs (i.e. term graphs) -- and what happens when the functions that they compute are composed?
