Abstract:This work presents a generalized Kirchhoff-Love shell theory that can explicitly capture fiber-induced anisotropy not only in stretching and out-of-plane bending, but also in in-plane bending. This setup is particularly suitable for heterogeneous and fibrous materials such as textiles, biomaterials, composites and pantographic structures. The presented theory is a direct extension of classical Kirchhoff-Love shell theory to incorporate the in-plane bending resistance of fibers. It also extends existing second-gradient Kirchhoff-Love shell theory for initially straight fibers to initially curved fibers. To describe the additional kinematics of multiple fiber families, a so-called in-plane curvature tensor -- which is symmetric and of second order -- is proposed. The effective stress tensor and the in-plane and out-of-plane moment tensors are then identified from the mechanical power balance. These tensors are all second order and symmetric in general. Constitutive equations for hyperelastic materials are derived from different expressions of the mechanical power balance. The weak form is also presented as it is required for computational shell formulations based on rotation-free finite element discretizations.

Abstract:This paper presents a general, nonlinear isogeometric finite element formulation for rotation-free shells with embedded fibers that captures anisotropy in stretching, shearing, twisting and bending -- both in-plane and out-of-plane. These capabilities allow for the simulation of large sheets of heterogeneous and fibrous materials either with or without matrix, such as textiles, composites, and pantographic structures. The work is a computational extension of our earlier theoretical work [1] that extends existing Kirchhoff-Love shell theory to incorporate the in-plane bending resistance of initially straight or curved fibers. The formulation requires only displacement degrees-of-freedom to capture all mentioned modes of deformation. To this end, isogeometric shape functions are used in order to satisfy the required $C^1$-continuity for bending across element boundaries. The proposed formulation can admit a wide range of material models, such as surface hyperelasticity that does not require any explicit thickness integration. To deal with possible material instability due to fiber compression, a stabilization scheme is added. Several benchmark examples are used to demonstrate the robustness and accuracy of the proposed computational formulation.

Abstract:With aid of the Stroh-type formalism and the state-space approach, a simple and elegant method is presented to obtain an exact solution for the time-dependent problem of a simply-supported laminated anisotropic piezothermoelastic plate in cylindrical bending with interfacial diffusion and sliding. The Stroh-type formalism is used to obtain the general solution of the thermoelectroelastic field in a certain layer. The state-space equation is then constructed for a laminated plate. The relaxation times and the transient thermoelectroelastic response of the laminated plate can be determined by solving the state-space equation via an analysis of a generalized eigenvalue problem. By using a similar method, we also derive an exact solution for a simply-supported laminated anisotropic piezothermoelastic cylindrical shell with interfacial diffusion and sliding under cylindrical bending.

Abstract:Stroh-type formalisms for anisotropic thin plates in literature are reviewed and discussed, and two kinds of hybrid Stroh-type formalisms are compared. It is seen that the two Stroh-type formalisms are essentially equivalent. With simple transfer relations, they can be expressed each other. In addition, with properly defined notation systems, the two Stroh-type formalisms can also be written in unified forms, which will be convenient in applications.
Nonlinear static isogeometric analysis of arbitrarily curved Kirchhoff-Love shells

Abstract:The geometrically rigorous nonlinear analysis of elastic shells is considered in the context of finite, but small, strain theory. The research is focused on the introduction of the full shell metric and examination of its influence on the nonlinear structural response. The exact relation between the reference and equidistant strains is employed and the complete analytic elastic constitutive relation between energetically conjugated forces and strains is derived via the reciprocal shift tensor. Utilizing these strict relations, the geometric stiffness matrix is derived explicitly by the variation of the unknown metric. Moreover, a compact form of this matrix is presented. Despite the linear displacement distribution due to the Kirchhoff-Love hypothesis, a nonlinear strain distribution arises along the shell thickness. This fact is sometimes disregarded for the nonlinear analysis of thin shells based on the initial geometry, thereby ignoring the strong curviness of a shell at some subsequent configuration. We show that the curviness of a shell at each configuration determines the appropriate shell formulation. For shells that become strongly curved at some configurations during deformation, the nonlinear distribution of strain throughout the thickness must be considered in order to obtain accurate results. We investigate four computational models: one based on the full analytical constitutive relation, and three simplified ones. Robustness, efficiency and accuracy of the presented formulation are examined via selected numerical experiments. Our main finding is that the employment of the full metric is often required when the complete response of the shells is sought, even for the initially thin shells. Finally, the simplified model that provided the best balance between efficiency and accuracy is suggested for the nonlinear analysis of strongly curved shells.

Abstract:We respond to a Comment on our paper [Physical Review A 80, 023823 (2009)], which appears to have stemmed from a misunderstanding of the various energy-momentum tensors of classical electrodynamics. It is shown that each stress tensor, when used in conjunction with the corresponding force-density and momentum-density expressions, yields results that are consistent with Maxwell's equations and with the conservation laws.

Abstract:This paper investigates the problem of stretching and bending deformations of a Kirchhoff anisotropic thin plate composed of two dissimilar materials bonded along a straight interface containing a crack. Our analysis makes use of the Stroh octet formalism developed recently by Cheng and Reddy (Cheng and Reddy, 2002, “Octet Formalism for Kirchhoff Anisotropic Plates,” Proc. R. Soc. Lond., A458, pp. 1499–1517; Cheng and Reddy, 2003, “Green’s Functions for Infinite and Semi-Infinite Anisotropic Thin Plates,” ASME J. Appl. Mech., 70, pp. 260–267; Cheng and Reddy, 2004, “Laminated Anisotropic Thin Plate With an Elliptic Inhomogeneity,” Mech. Mater., 36, pp. 647–657; Cheng and Reddy, 2005, “Structure and Properties of the Fundamental Elastic Plate Matrix,” J. Appl. Math. Mech., 85, pp. 721–739) for Kirchhoff anisotropic plates. It is found that the interfacial crack-tip field consists of a pair of two-dimensional oscillatory singularities, which are explicitly determined. Two complex intensity factors are proposed to evaluate the two oscillatory singularities.

Abstract:The Kirchhoff-Love hypothesis expresses a kinematic constraint that is assumed to be valid for the deformations of a three-dimensional body when one of its dimensions is much smaller than the other two, as is the case for plates. This hypothesis has a long history checkered with the vicissitudes of life: even its attribution has been questioned, and recent rigorous dimension-reduction tools (based on $\Gamma$-convergence) have proven to be incompatible with it. We find that an appropriately revised version of the Kirchhoff-Love hypothesis is a valuable means to derive a two-dimensional variational model for elastic plates from a three-dimensional nonlinear free-energy functional. The bending energies thus obtained for a number of materials also show to contain measures of stretching of the plate's mid surface (alongside the expected measures of bending). The incompatibility with $\Gamma$-convergence also appears to be removed in the cases where contact with that method and ours can be made.

Abstract:Within the framework of an existing anisotropic thin-walled beam model, a number of non-classical effects are further incorporated and the model thereby developed is validated. Three types of lay-ups, namely, the cross-ply, circumferentially uniform stiffness, and circumferentially asymmetric stiffness are investigated. The solution methodology is based on the Extended Galerkin's Method and the non-classical effects on the static responses and natural frequencies are investigated. Comparisons of the predictions by the present model with experimental data and other analytical as well as numerical results are conducted and pertinent conclusions are drawn. This work is the first attempt to validate a class of refined thin-walled beam model that has been extensively used towards the study, among others, of dynamic response, static aeroelasticity and structural/aeroelastic feedback control.

Abstract:This is Part II of a multipart article on a hyperelastic extended Kirchhoff–Love shell model with out-of-plane normal stress. We introduce an isogeometric discretization method for incompressible materials and present test computations. Accounting for the out-of-plane normal stress distribution in the out-of-plane direction affects the accuracy in calculating the deformed-configuration out-of-plane position, and consequently the nonlinear response of the shell. The return is more than what we get from accounting for the out-of-plane deformation mapping. The traction acting on the shell can be specified on the upper and lower surfaces separately. With that, the model is now free from the "midsurface' location in terms of specifying the traction. In dealing with incompressible materials, we start with an augmented formulation that includes the pressure as a Lagrange multiplier and then eliminate it by using the geometrical representation of the incompressibility constraint. The resulting model is an extended one, in the Kirchhoff–Love category in the degree-of-freedom count, and encompassing all other extensions in the isogeometric subcategory. We include ordered details as a recipe for making the implementation practical. The implementation has two components that will not be obvious but might be critical in boundary integration. The first one is related to the edge-surface moment created by the Kirchhoff–Love assumption. The second one is related to the pressure/traction integrations over all the surfaces of the finite-thickness geometry. The test computations are for dome-shaped inflation of a flat circular shell, rolling of a rectangular plate, pinching of a cylindrical shell, and uniform hydrostatic pressurization of the pinched cylindrical shell. We compute with neo-Hookean and Mooney–Rivlin material models. To understand the effect of the terms added in the extended model, we compare with models that exclude some of those terms.

Abstract:A Stroh-like formalism is developed for the heat conduction and the coupled stretching and bending deformations of a laminated anisotropic thermoelastic thin plate based on Kirchhoff theory. For the heat conduction problem, a Stroh-like quartic formalism is developed. Two-dimensional generalized temperature and heat flux function vectors are introduced. The structure of the introduced 4x4 fundamental plate matrix for heat conduction is the same as that of the 8x8 fundamental elasticity matrix in the Stroh sextic formalism for generalized plane strain elasticity. Consequently, the orthogonality and closure relations for heat conduction in thin plates is established. For the thermoelastic problem, an inhomogeneous particular solution is derived rigorously. We obtain an octet formalism in which the general solution is composed of the well-known homogeneous solution developed by Cheng and Reddy (isothermal case) and the inhomogeneous particular solution arising from the thermal effect.
An essay on deformation measures in isotropic thin shell theories. Bending versus curvature

Abstract:It has become commonplace for the stored energy function of any realistic shell model to align ``within first order" with the classical Koiter membrane-bending (flexural) shell model. In this paper, we assess whether certain extended Cosserat shell models are consistent with the classical linear Koiter model. In doing this, we observe that there are numerous reasons why a modified version of the classical Koiter model should be considered, a consensus reached not only by Koiter himself but also by Sanders and Budiansky, who independently developed the same theory during the same period. To provide a comprehensive overview of the strain measures employed in our Cosserat shell models, this paper presents them in a unified manner and compares them with the strain measures previously utilized in the literature. We show that all our new strain tensors either generalize (in the case of nonlinear constrained or unconstrained models) or coincide (in the case of the linear constrained model) with the strain tensors recognized as the ``best" or those possessing a well-defined geometric interpretation connected to bending or curvature.

Remarks on Analytic Solutions in Nonlinear Elasticity and Anti-Plane Shear Problem

Abstract:This paper revisits a well-studied anti-plane shear deformation problem formulated by Knowles in 1976 and analytical solutions in general nonlinear elasticity proposed by Gao since 1998. Based on minimum potential principle, a well-determined fully nonlinear system is obtained for isochoric deformation, which admits non-trivial states of finite anti-plane shear without ellipticity constraint. By using canonical duality theory, a complete set of analytical solutions are obtained for 3-D finite deformation problems governed by generalized neo-Hookean model. Both global and local extremal solutions to the nonconvex variational problem are identified by a triality theory. Connection between challenges in nonconvex analysis and NP-hard problems in computational science is revealed. It is proved that the ellipticity condition for general fully nonlinear boundary value problems depends not only on differential operators, but also sensitively on the external force field. The homogenous hyper-elasticity for general anti-plane shear deformation must be governed by the generalized neo-Hookean model. Knowles' over-determined system is simply due to a pseudo-Lagrange multiplier and two extra equilibrium conditions in the plane. The constitutive condition in his theorems is naturally satisfied with $b = \lambda/2$. His ellipticity condition is neither necessary nor sufficient for general homogeneous materials to admit nontrivial states of anti-plane shear.

The Effects of Anisotropic Surface Elasticity on the Contact Problem in an Anisotropic Material

Abstract:We study the contribution of surface elasticity to the two-dimensional contact problem in a generally anisotropic material using the Stroh sextic formalism. Surface elasticity is incorporated into the model of deformation using an anisotropic version of the continuum-based surface/interface model of Gurtin and Murdoch. Full-field analytic solutions are obtained in terms of exponential integrals for an anisotropic half-space when the contact surface is subjected to two particular types of loading: first, we consider the case of a uniform load (shearing and pressure) applied to an infinitely long strip of the contact surface and second, by reducing the strip to zero width, we deduce the corresponding result for a concentrated line force acting on the contact surface. The analysis indicates that the surface deformation gradient is finite in the first case of uniform loading of the strip and exhibits a weak logarithmic singularity at the location of the applied concentrated line force in the second case.

Abstract:We discuss a common misunderstanding made by many authors, regarding their data analysis for blunt rigid projectiles perforating thin metallic plates. The problem with their analysis is that they use the empirical relation of Lambert and Jonas (1976), which was suggested for eroding projectiles penetrating thick plates. Instead, they should use the physics-based model of Recht and Ipson (1963) to account for their data. The paper of Wu et al. (2023) is one of these works, and we use their ballistics results to demonstrate the benefits of the R-I model to account for their data.

Abstract:The present article aims to re-derive a (de-)homogenization model for particularly investigating the behavior of thin laminated plates withstanding transverse loads. Instead of starting with Kirchhoff-type of assumptions, we directly apply perturbation analysis, in terms of the small parameter introduced by the thinness of composite plates, to the original three-dimensional governing elastostatic equations. The present article sees its intriguing points in the following three aspects. First, it is shown that transverse loads applied on a thin laminated plate induce an in-plane stress response, which essentially differs from the case of single-layered homogenous plates. A scaling law estimating the magnitude of the in-plane stresses due to transverse loads is then given, and a size effect in such induced in-plane stresses arises. Second, the stress state at any position of interest in the original three-dimensional configuration can be asymptotically estimated following a (de-)homogenization scheme, and the (de-homogenization) accuracy is shown, both theoretically and numerically, to be at a same order of magnitude as the thickness-to-size ratio. Third, the asymptotic analysis here identifies the right order of magnitude for the transverse normal strain, which is often set to vanish, leading to the so-called Poisson’s locking problem in classical thin plate theories.

Abstract:This work presents a numerical formulation to model isotropic viscoelastic material behavior for membranes and thin shells. The surface and the shell theory are formulated within a curvilinear coordinate system, which allows the representation of general surfaces and deformations. The kinematics follow from Kirchhoff-Love theory and the discretization makes use of isogeometric shape functions. A multiplicative split of the surface deformation gradient is employed, such that an intermediate surface configuration is introduced. The surface metric and curvature of this intermediate configuration follow from the solution of nonlinear evolution laws - ordinary differential equations (ODEs) - that stem from a generalized viscoelastic solid model. The evolution laws are integrated numerically with the implicit Euler scheme and linearized within the Newton-Raphson scheme of the nonlinear finite element framework. The implementation of membrane and bending viscosity is verified with the help of analytical solutions and shows ideal convergence behavior. The chosen numerical examples capture large deformations and typical viscoelasticity behavior, such as creep, relaxation, and strain rate dependence. It is also shown that the proposed formulation can be straightforwardly applied to model boundary viscoelasticity of 3D bodies.
