Abstract:In this paper, we use Aleksandrov's reflection principle to prove symmetry of solutions to F(∇Sn2u+uI)=f(u,u2+|∇Snu|2), where u is the support function of a convex body, and F is a function of principal radii. As a corollary, alongside [Ivaki, arXiv:2307.06252], we provide an alternative proof of the uniqueness of solution to the isotropic Gaussian-Minkowski problem.
Remarks on Analytic Solutions in Nonlinear Elasticity and Anti-Plane Shear Problem

Abstract:This paper revisits a well-studied anti-plane shear deformation problem formulated by Knowles in 1976 and analytical solutions in general nonlinear elasticity proposed by Gao since 1998. Based on minimum potential principle, a well-determined fully nonlinear system is obtained for isochoric deformation, which admits non-trivial states of finite anti-plane shear without ellipticity constraint. By using canonical duality theory, a complete set of analytical solutions are obtained for 3-D finite deformation problems governed by generalized neo-Hookean model. Both global and local extremal solutions to the nonconvex variational problem are identified by a triality theory. Connection between challenges in nonconvex analysis and NP-hard problems in computational science is revealed. It is proved that the ellipticity condition for general fully nonlinear boundary value problems depends not only on differential operators, but also sensitively on the external force field. The homogenous hyper-elasticity for general anti-plane shear deformation must be governed by the generalized neo-Hookean model. Knowles' over-determined system is simply due to a pseudo-Lagrange multiplier and two extra equilibrium conditions in the plane. The constitutive condition in his theorems is naturally satisfied with $b = \lambda/2$. His ellipticity condition is neither necessary nor sufficient for general homogeneous materials to admit nontrivial states of anti-plane shear.

Analytical Solutions to General Anti-Plane Shear Problems In Finite Elasticity

Abstract:This paper presents a pure complementary energy variational method for solving anti-plane shear problem in finite elasticity. Based on the canonical duality-triality theory developed by the author, the nonlinear/nonconex partial differential equation for the large deformation problem is converted into an algebraic equation in dual space, which can, in principle, be solved to obtain a complete set of stress solutions. Therefore, a general analytical solution form of the deformation is obtained subjected to a compatibility condition. Applications are illustrated by examples with both convex and nonconvex stored strain energies governed by quadratic-exponential and power-law material models, respectively. Results show that the nonconvex variational problem could have multiple solutions at each material point, the complementary gap function and the triality theory can be used to identify both global and local extremal solutions, while the popular (poly-, quasi-, and rank-one) convexities provide only local minimal criteria, the Legendre-Hadamard condition does not guarantee uniqueness of solutions. This paper demonstrates again that the pure complementary energy principle and the triality theory play important roles in finite deformation theory and nonconvex analysis.

Duality Arguments in the Analysis of a Viscoelastic Contact Problem

Abstract:We consider a mathematical model which describes the quasistatic frictionless contact of a viscoelastic body with a rigid-plastic foundation. We describe the mechanical assumptions, list the hypotheses on the data and provide three different variational formulations of the model in which the unknowns are the displacement field, the stress field and the strain field, respectively. These formulations have a different structure. Nevertheless, we prove that they are pairwise dual of each other. Then, we deduce the unique weak solvability of the contact problem as well as the Lipschitz continuity of its weak solution with respect to the data. The proofs are based on recent results on history-dependent variational inequalities and inclusions. Finally, we present numerical simulations in the study of the contact problem, together with the corresponding mechanical interpretations.

Analytic Solutions to Large Deformation Problems Governed by Generalized Neo-Hookean Model

Abstract:This paper addresses some fundamental issues in nonconvex analysis. By using pure complementary energy principle proposed by the author, a class of fully nonlinear partial differential equations in nonlinear elasticity is able to convert a unified algebraic equation, a complete set of analytical solutions are obtained in dual space for 3-D finite deformation problems governed by generalized neo-Hookean model. Both global and local extremal solutions to the nonconvex variational problem are identified by a triality theory. Connection between challenges in nonlinear analysis and NP-hard problems in computational science is revealed. Results show that Legendre–Hadamard condition can only guarantee ellipticity for generalized convex problems. For nonconvex systems, the ellipticity depends not only on the stored energy, but also on the external force field. Uniqueness is proved based on a generalized quasiconvexity and a generalized ellipticity condition. Application is illustrated for nonconvex logarithm stored energy.

Singularities Interacting with Interfaces Incorporating Surface Elasticity under Plane Strain Deformations

Abstract:We consider problems involving singularities such as point force, point moment, edge dislocation and a circular Eshelby?s inclusion in isotropic bimaterials in the presence of an interface incorporating surface/interface elasticity under plane strain deformations and derive elementary solutions in terms of exponential integrals. The surface mechanics is incorporated using a version of the continuum-based surface/interface model of Gurtin and Murdoch. The results indicate that the stresses in the two half-planes are dependent on two interface parameters.
A contact problem for viscoelastic bodies with inertial effects and unilateral boundary constraints

Abstract:We consider a viscoelastic body occupying a smooth bounded domain $\Omega\subset \mathbb{R}^3$ under the effect of a volumic traction force g . The macroscopic displacement vector from the equilibrium configuration is denoted by u . Inertial effects are considered; hence, the equation for u contains the second-order term u tt . On a part Γ D of the boundary of Ω, the body is fixed and no displacement may occur; on a second part Γ N ⊂ ∂ Ω , the body can move freely; on a third portion Γ C ⊂ ∂ Ω , the body is in adhesive contact with a solid support. The boundary forces acting on Γ C due to the action of elastic stresses are responsible for delamination, i.e., progressive failure of adhesive bonds. This phenomenon is mathematically represented by a non-linear ordinary differential equation settled on Γ C and describing the evolution of the delamination order parameter z . Following the lines of a new approach outlined in Bonetti et al. (2015, arXiv:1503.01911) and based on duality methods in Sobolev–Bochner spaces, we define a suitable concept of weak solution to the resulting system of partial differential equations. Correspondingly, we prove an existence result on finite-time intervals of arbitrary length.

Abstract:It is still a challenge to clarify the dependence of overall elastic properties of heterogeneous materials on the microstructures of non-elliposodal inhomogeneities (cracks, pores, foreign particles). From the theory of elasticity, the formulation of the perturbance elastic fields, coming from a non-ellipsoidal inhomogeneity embedded in an infinitely extended material with remote constant loading, inevitably involve one or more integral equations. Up to now, due to the mathematical difficulty, there is almost no explicit analytical solution obtained except for the ellipsoidal inhomogeneity. In this paper, we point out the impossibility to transform this inhomogeneity problem into a conventional Eshelby problem by the equivalent inclusion method even if the eigenstrain is chosen to be non-uniform. We also build up an equivalent model, called the second Eshelby problem, to investigate the perturbance stress. It is probably a better template to make use of the profound methods and results of conventional Eshelby problems of non-ellipsoidal inclusions.
The geometry of discombinations and its applications to semi-inverse problems in anelasticity

Abstract:The geometrical formulation of continuum mechanics provides us with a powerful approach to understand and solve problems in anelasticity where an elastic deformation is combined with a non-elastic component arising from defects, thermal stresses, growth effects or other effects leading to residual stresses. The central idea is to assume that the material manifold, prescribing the reference configuration for a body, has an intrinsic, non-Euclidean, geometrical structure. Residual stresses then naturally arise when this configuration is mapped into Euclidean space. Here, we consider the problem of discombinations (a new term that we introduce in this paper), that is, a combined distribution of fields of dislocations, disclinations and point defects. Given a discombination, we compute the geometrical characteristics of the material manifold (curvature, torsion, non-metricity), its Cartan's moving frames and structural equations. This identification provides a powerful algorithm to solve semi-inverse problems with non-elastic components. As an example, we calculate the residual stress field of a cylindrically symmetric distribution of discombinations in an infinite circular cylindrical bar made of an incompressible hyperelastic isotropic elastic solid.
Demonstrating Invalidity of Solution Methods Involved in Solving Compatibility Equations

Abstract:In the theory of elasticity, the constraint of compatibility conditions on displacement field is not equivalent to the property of displacement field. The difference may broaden the possibility of solutions to elasticity problems, which means that the solution methods involved in solving the compatibility equations like stress-based solution method and stress function method may be invalid. The study argues the validity of the solution methods involved in solving the compatibility equations. It is concluded that the absence of constraints on local rigid body rotation causes the non-uniqueness of displacement fields for a rectangular beam purely bent and a cantilever loaded at the end.

Two Circular Inclusions with Arbitrarily Varied Surface Effects

Abstract:We investigate the problem associated with two interacting circular inclusions in a composite subjected to anti-plane shear deformation. A version of the Gurtin–Murdoch model of surface/interface elasticity is incorporated into the description of the two inclusion–matrix interfaces. In contrast to previous investigations, the surface shear moduli are varied arbitrarily along the two circular interfaces. The composite is subjected to various loading mechanisms that include uniform stresses applied at infinity, uniform eigenstrains imposed on the two circular inclusions and a screw dislocation located either in the matrix or inside one of the two inclusions. Complex variable methods are used in conjunction with Fourier series expansions and matrix algebra to derive an analytical solution to the corresponding problem. The unknown coefficients in the ensuing three analytic functions are determined in an elegant manner. The size-dependent material forces acting on the two inclusions and the screw dislocation are also obtained.

Abstract:The Ericksen-Leslie system is a fundamental hydrodynamic model that describes the evolution of incompressible liquid crystal flows of nematic type. In this paper, we prove the uniqueness of global weak solutions to the general Ericksen-Leslie system with a Ginzburg-Landau type approximation in a two dimensional periodic domain. The proof is based on some delicate energy estimates for the difference of two weak solutions within a suitable functional framework that is less regular than the usual one at the natural energy level, combined with the Osgood lemma involving a specific double-logarithmic type modulus of continuity. We overcome the essential mathematical difficulties arising from those highly nonlinear terms in the Leslie stress tensor and in particular, the lack of maximum principle for the director equation due to the stretching effect of the fluid on the director field. Our argument makes full use of the coupling structure as well as the dissipative nature of the system, and relies on some techniques from harmonic analysis and paradifferential calculus in the periodic setting.
Weak solvability of elliptic variational inequalities coupled with a nonlinear differential equation

Abstract:In this paper we establish existence, uniqueness, and boundedness results for an elliptic variational inequality coupled with a nonlinear ordinary differential equation. Under the general framework, we present a new application modelling the antiplane shear deformation of a static frictional adhesive contact problem. The adhesion process has been extensively studied, but it is usual to assume a priori that the intensity of adhesion is bounded by introducing truncation operators. The aim of this article is to remove this restriction. The proof is based on an iterative approximation scheme showing that the problem has a unique solution. A key ingredient is finding uniform a priori bounds for each iterate. These are obtained by adapting versions of the Moser iteration to our system of equations.

A Hidden Convexity of Nonlinear Elasticity

Abstract:A technique for developing convex dual variational principles for the governing PDE of nonlinear elastostatics and elastodynamics is presented. This allows the definition of notions of a variational dual solution and a dual solution corresponding to the PDEs of nonlinear elasticity, even when the latter arise as formal Euler-Lagrange equations corresponding to non-quasiconvex elastic energy functionals whose energy minimizers do not exist. This is demonstrated rigorously in the case of elastostatics for the Saint-Venant Kirchhoff material (in all dimensions), where the existence of variational dual solutions is also proven. The existence of a variational dual solution for the incompressible neo-Hookean material in 2-d is also shown. Stressed and unstressed elastostatic and elastodynamic solutions in 1 space dimension corresponding to a non-convex, double-well energy are computed using the dual methodology. In particular, we show the stability of a dual elastodynamic equilibrium solution for which there are regions of non-vanishing length with negative elastic stiffness, i.e.~non-hyperbolic regions, for which the corresponding primal problem is ill-posed and demonstrates an explosive `Hadamard instability;' this appears to have implications for the modeling of physically observed softening behavior in macroscopic mechanical response.

A Circular Inhomogeneity Incorporating Surface/interface Strain Gradient Elasticity

Abstract:We derive a rigorous solution to the anti-plane shear problem of a circular elastic inhomogeneity with an imperfect interface described by surface strain gradient elasticity. The loadings considered include a uniform remote stress field and a screw dislocation applied either in the matrix or in the inhomogeneity. By using analytical continuation, the problem is reduced to a third-order differential equation for a single analytic function. The analysis indicates that in the absence of the screw dislocation, the internal stress field is uniform and is reliant on two size-dependent parameters arising from surface strain gradient elasticity. The size-dependent image force acting on the screw dislocation is derived. The conditions for the existence of equilibrium positions for the dislocation in the matrix or in the inhomogeneity are obtained. Several numerical examples are presented to illustrate the solution. As an application of the solution, the stabilities of a misfit screw dislocation dipole in the matrix and a screw dislocation pair in the inhomogeneity are also discussed.

Abstract:We are concerned with underlying connections between fluids, elasticity, isometric embedding of Riemannian manifolds, and the existence of wrinkled solutions of the associated nonlinear partial differential equations. In this paper, we develop such connections for the case of two spatial dimensions, and demonstrate that the continuum mechanical equations can be mapped into a corresponding geometric framework and the inherent direct application of the theory of isometric embeddings and the Gauss-Codazzi equations through examples for the Euler equations for fluids and the Euler-Lagrange equations for elastic solids. These results show that the geometric theory provides an avenue for addressing the admissibility criteria for nonlinear conservation laws in continuum mechanics.

Abstract:A new concise proof is given of a duality theorem connecting completely monotone relaxation functions with Bernstein class creep functions in one-dimensional and anisotropic 3D viscoelasticity. The proof makes use of the theory of complete Bernstein functions and Stieltjes functions and is based on a relation between these two function classes.
