Abstract:In their Letter, Haziot et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 110 (2013) 035301] report a novel phenomenon of giant plasticity for hcp Helium-4 quantum crystals. They assert that Helium-4 exhibits mechanical properties not found in classical plasticity theory. Specifically, they examine high-quality crystals as a function of temperature and applied strain, where the shear modulus reaches a plateau and dissipation becomes close to zero; both quantities are reported to be independent of stress and strain, implying a reversible dissipation process and quantum tunneling. In this Comment, we show that these signatures can be explained with a classical model of thermally activated dislocation glide without the need to invoke quantum tunneling or dissipationless motion. Recently, we proposed a dislocation glide model in solid Helium-4 containing the dissipation contribution in the presence of other dislocations with qualitatively similar behavior [Zhou et al., Philos. Mag. Lett. 92 (2012) 608].

Abstract:The mechanism of the roughening induced partial depinning of gliding dislocations from Helium-3 impurities is proposed as an alternative to the standard "boiling off". We give a strong argument that Helium-3 remains bound to dislocations even at large temperatures due to very long equilibration times. A scenario leading to the similarity between elastic and superfluid responses of solid Helium-4 is also discussed. Its main ingredient is a strong suppression of the superfluidity along dislocation cores by dislocation kinks (D. Aleinikava, et. al., arXiv:0812.0983). These kinks, on one hand, determine the temperature and Helium-3 dependencies of the generalized shear modulus and, on the other hand, control the superfluid response. Several proposals for theoretical and experimental studies of solid Helium-4 are suggested.

Abstract:Recently, Chuanying Li, Tao Fu, Xule Li, Hao Hu, and Xianghe Peng in [Phys. Rev. B 107, 224106] investigated the mechanical behavior of cubic HfC and TaC under simple shear (SS) and pure shear (PS) using first-principles calculations. Unfortunately, the paper contains some serious and fundamental flaws in the field of continuum mechanics and nanomechanics. The results presented appear to be qualitatively and quantitatively incorrect, they would be correct if we were in the small/linear deformation/strain regime, which we are not. A correct description therefore requires a finite/nonlinear deformation/strain apparatus.

Abstract:In their comment <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="cond-mat/9710285" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/cond-mat/9710285">cond-mat/9710285</a> [Phys. Rev. Lett. 80, 5024 (1998)] den Hartog and van Wees (HW) raise objections against our analysis of the experimental data presented in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="cond-mat/9708162" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/cond-mat/9708162">cond-mat/9708162</a> [Phys. Rev. Lett. 79, 1547 (1997)]. According to HW, we did not account for the quantum phase incoherence introduced by the Niobium compounds of the investigated Nb/Au hybrid samples. Here we show that and why this criticism is not justified. Some difficulties associated with a precise determination of the coherence lengths are discussed. It is discussed why these uncertainties do not have a qualitative impact on the results reported in our paper.

Coarse-graining microscopic strains in a harmonic, two-dimensional solid and its implications for elasticity: non-local susceptibilities and non-affine noise

Abstract:In soft matter systems the local displacement field can be accessed directly by video microscopy enabling one to compute local strain fields and hence the elastic moduli using a coarse-graining procedure. We study this process for a simple triangular lattice of particles connected by harmonic springs in two-dimensions. Coarse-graining local strains obtained from particle configurations in a Monte Carlo simulation generates non-trivial, non-local strain correlations (susceptibilities), which may be understood within a generalized, Landau type elastic Hamiltonian containing up to quartic terms in strain gradients (K. Franzrahe et al., Phys. Rev. E 78, 026106 (2008)). In order to demonstrate the versatility of the analysis of these correlations and to make our calculations directly relevant for experiments on colloidal solids, we systematically study various parameters such as the choice of statistical ensemble, presence of external pressure and boundary conditions. We show that special care needs to be taken for an accurate application of our results to actual experiments, where the analyzed area is embedded within a larger system, to which it is mechanically coupled. Apart from the smooth, affine strain fields, the coarse-graining procedure also gives rise to a noise field made up of non-affine displacements. Several properties of this noise field may be rationalized for the harmonic solid using a simple "cell model" calculation. Furthermore the scaling behavior of the probability distribution of the noise field is studied and a master curve is obtained.

Abstract:This study presents a comprehensive analysis of hyperelastic thin cylindrical shells exhibiting initial geometrical imperfections. The nonlinear equations of motion are derived using an improved formulation of Donnell's nonlinear shallow-shell theory and Lagrange's equations, incorporating the small strain hypothesis. Mooney–Rivlin constitutive model is employed to capture the hyperelastic behavior of the material. The coupled nonlinear equations of motion are analytically solved using Multiple-Scale method, which effectively accounts for the inherent nonlinearity of the system. To ensure the model's accuracy, the linear model is verified by comparing the results with those obtained through hybrid finite element method. Subsequently, the model with only geometrical nonlinearity is evaluated against other research works existing in the open literature to ensure its reliability and precision. Finally, the results of the model, considering both geometrical and physical nonlinearity, are verified against the results obtained from Abaqus software. The main objective of this research is to provide a detailed understanding of the response of hyperelastic thin cylindrical shells in the presence of initial geometric imperfections. In this order, the impact of three distinct geometric imperfections—axisymmetric, asymmetric, and a combination of driven and companion modes—on the natural frequency is examined. The behavior of each of these geometric imperfections is investigated by varying their respective coefficients. The numerical results indicate that geometric imperfections enhance the natural frequency, and employing different models for imperfections leads to a variation in this trend. In the amplitude response of hyperelastic cylindrical shells, two peaks coexist, reflecting the softening and hardening responses of the system. Distinct initial geometric imperfections influence these two peaks.

Abstract:We propose a microscopic picture for understanding the nonlinear rheology of supercooled liquids with soft repulsive potentials. Based on Brownian dynamics simulations of supercooled charge-stabilized colloidal suspensions, our analysis shows that the shear thinning of viscosity ( η ) at large enough shear rates ( γ ̇ ), expressed as η∼γ ̇−λ , originates from the evolution of the localized elastic region (LER). An LER is a transient zone composed of the first several coordination shells of a reference particle. In response to the external shear, particles within the LER undergo nearly affine displacement before the yielding of the LER. The characteristic strain ( γ ) and size ( ξ ) of the LER, respectively, depend on the shear rate by γ∼γ ̇ε and ξ∼γ ̇−ν . Three exponents, λ , ε , and ν , are related by λ=1−ε=4ν . This simple relation connects the nonlinear rheology to the elastic properties and the microscopic configurational distortion of the system. The relaxation of the LER is promoted by the large-step nonaffine particle displacement along the extensional direction of the shear geometry with the step length of 0.4 particle diameter. The elastic deformation and relaxation of the LER are ubiquitous and successive in the flow, which compose the fundamental process governing the bulk nonlinear viscoelasticity. We apply this model to analyze the rheo-small-angle neutron scattering data of sheared charge-stabilized colloidal suspensions. Abstract:We contend that the arguments provided in Phys. Rev. Lett. 130, 016001 (2023), purporting to show the absence of off-diagonal long-range order in hcp $^4$He dislocation cores are misleading and incorrect. In particular, the one-body density matrix averaged over the whole crystalline sample provides no useful information on the possible superfluid behavior inside the quasi-one-dimensional core of a dislocation in the crystal.

Abstract:Thermal fluctuations, geometric exclusion, and external driving all govern the mechanical response of dense particulate suspensions. Here, we measure the stress-strain response of quasi-two-dimensional flow-stabilized microsphere heaps in a regime in which all three effects are present using a microfluidic device. We observe that the elastic modulus and the mean interparticle separation of the heaps are tunable via the confining stress provided by the fluid flow. Furthermore, the measured stress-strain curves exhibit a universal nonlinear shape which can be predicted from a thermal van der Waals equation of state with excluded volume. This analysis indicates that many-body interactions contribute a significant fraction of the stress supported by the heap.

Abstract:This paper presents a critical review of the nonlinear dynamics of hyperelastic structures. Hyperelastic structures often undergo large strains when subjected to external time-dependent forces. Hyperelasticity requires specific constitutive laws to describe the mechanical properties of different materials, which are characterised by a nonlinear relationship between stress and strain. Due to recent recognition of the high potential of hyperelastic structures in soft robots and other applications, and the capability of hyperelasticity to model soft biological tissues, the number of studies on hyperelastic structures and materials has grown significantly. Thus, a comprehensive explanation of hyperelastic constitutive laws is presented, and different techniques of continuum mechanics, which are suitable to model these materials, are discussed in this literature review. Furthermore, the sensitivity of each hyperelastic strain energy density function to coefficient variation is shown for some well-known hyperelastic models. Alongside this, the application of hyperelasticity to model the nonlinear dynamics of polymeric structures (e.g., beams, plates, shells, membranes and balloons) is discussed in detail with the assistance of previous studies in this field. The advantages and disadvantages of hyperelastic models are discussed in detail. This present review can stimulate the development of more accurate and reliable models.
