Abstract:Diatomic nitrogen is an archetypal molecular system known for its exceptional stability and complex behavior at high pressures and temperatures, including rich solid polymorphism, formation of energetic states, and an insulator-to-metal transformation coupled to a change in chemical bonding. However, the thermobaric conditions of the fluid molecular-polymer phase boundary and associated metallization have not been experimentally established. Here, by applying dynamic laser heating of compressed nitrogen and using fast optical spectroscopy to study electronic properties, we observe a transformation from insulating (molecular) to conducting dense fluid nitrogen at temperatures that decrease with pressure, and establish that metallization, and presumably fluid polymerization, occurs above 125 GPa at 2500 K. Our observations create a better understanding of the interplay between molecular dissociation, melting, and metallization revealing features that are common in simple molecular systems.

Abstract:In their comment <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="cond-mat/9710285" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/cond-mat/9710285">cond-mat/9710285</a> [Phys. Rev. Lett. 80, 5024 (1998)] den Hartog and van Wees (HW) raise objections against our analysis of the experimental data presented in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="cond-mat/9708162" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/cond-mat/9708162">cond-mat/9708162</a> [Phys. Rev. Lett. 79, 1547 (1997)]. According to HW, we did not account for the quantum phase incoherence introduced by the Niobium compounds of the investigated Nb/Au hybrid samples. Here we show that and why this criticism is not justified. Some difficulties associated with a precise determination of the coherence lengths are discussed. It is discussed why these uncertainties do not have a qualitative impact on the results reported in our paper.

Abstract:In a recent paper, Phys. Rev. E 67, 012201 (2003)] proposed a new interpretation of the collective dynamics in liquid metals and, in particular, of the relaxation mechanisms ruling density fluctuations propagation. At variance with both the predictions of the current literature and the results of recent inelastic x-ray scattering experiments, ST associate the quasielastic component of the S (Q,omega ) to the thermal relaxation, as it holds in ordinary adiabatic hydrodynamics valid for nonconductive liquids and in the Q-->0 limit. We show here that this interpretation leads to a nonphysical behavior of different thermodynamic and transport parameters.
Distinct Metallization and Atomization Transitions in Dense Liquid Hydrogen

Abstract:We perform molecular dynamics simulations driven by accurate quantum Monte Carlo forces on dense liquid hydrogen. There is a recent report of a complete atomization transition between a mixed molecular-atomic liquid and a completely dissociated fluid in an almost unaccessible pressure range [Nat. Commun. 5, 3487 (2014)]. Here, instead, we identify a different transition between the fully molecular liquid and the mixed-atomic fluid at ∼400 GPa, i.e., in a much more interesting pressure range. We provide numerical evidence supporting the metallic behavior of this intermediate phase. Therefore, we predict that the metallization at finite temperature occurs in this partially dissociated molecular fluid, well before the complete atomization of the liquid. At high temperature this first-order transition becomes a crossover, in very good agreement with the experimental observation. Several systematic tests supporting the quality of our large scale calculations are also reported.

Abstract:In a recent comment by A.A. Zvyagin to our Letter [Phys. Rev. Lett. 89, 47202 (2002)] it was pointed out that the bosonization treatment of the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain is only valid in the low temperature and long length limit. We support this statement and quantify the limits of validity by explicitly showing the crossover to the high temperature and/or short length limit using a combination of bosonization formulas and numerical results.

Abstract:Quantum effects in condensed matter normally only occur at low temperatures. Here we show a large quantum effect in high-pressure liquid hydrogen at thousands of Kelvins. We show that the metallization transition in hydrogen is subject to a very large isotope effect, occurring hundreds of degrees lower than the equivalent transition in deuterium. We examined this using path integral molecular dynamics simulations which identify a liquid-liquid transition involving atomization, metallization, and changes in viscosity, specific heat, and compressibility. The difference between H2 and D2 is a quantum mechanical effect that can be associated with the larger zero-point energy in H2 weakening the covalent bond. Our results mean that experimental results on deuterium must be corrected before they are relevant to understanding hydrogen at planetary conditions. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevLett.126.225701 © 2021 American Physical Society

Abstract:A reply is made to Comment by <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://D.P.Sheehan" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> in which he takes notice that the quantum force introduced in my earlier paper <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://A.V.Nikulov" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>, Phys. Rev. B 64, 012505 (2001) challenges to the absolute status of the second law of thermodynamics. It is shown that the introduction of the quantum force explains only an experimental challenge to the second law. The observation of the persistent current at non-zero resistance R > 0 is experimental evidence of violation of the postulate saving the second law in the beginning of the 20 century. According to this postulate any Brownian motion is absolutely random whereas the persistent current at R > 0 is a regulated Brownian motion.

Abstract:Superfluidity is a well-characterized quantum phenomenon which entails frictionless-motion of mesoscopic particles through a superfluid, such as $^4$He or dilute atomic-gases at very low temperatures. As shown by Landau, the incompatibility between energy- and momentum-conservation, which ultimately stems from the spectrum of the elementary excitations of the superfluid, forbids quantum-scattering between the superfluid and the moving mesoscopic particle, below a critical speed-threshold. Here we predict that frictionless-motion can also occur in the absence of a standard superfluid, i.e. when a He atom travels through a narrow (5,5) carbon-nanotube (CNT). Due to the quasi-linear dispersion of the plasmon and phonon modes that could interact with He, the (5,5) CNT embodies a solid-state analog of the superfluid, thereby enabling straightforward transfer of Landau's criterion of superfluidity. As a result, Landau's equations acquire broader generality, and may be applicable to other nanoscale friction phenomena, whose description has been so far purely classical.
