Abstract:We describe two-flavor QCD lattice data for the pressure at a nonzero temperature and vanishing chemical potential within a quasiparticle model. Relying only on thermodynamic consistency, the model is extended to nonzero chemical potential. The results agree with lattice calculations in the region of a small chemical potential.

Abstract:This paper is a slightly modified version of the introductory part of a doctoral dissertation that contained also three original articles, <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="hep-ph/0212283" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/hep-ph/0212283">hep-ph/0212283</a>, <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="hep-ph/0305183" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/hep-ph/0305183">hep-ph/0305183</a> and <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="hep-ph/0311323" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/hep-ph/0311323">hep-ph/0311323</a>. Our purpose is to review the history and present status of finite-temperature perturbation theory as applied to the context of determining the equilibrium properties of quark-gluon plasma, most notably the pressure of QCD at finite temperatures and quark chemical potentials. We first introduce the general formalism of finite-temperature field theory and perturbation theory, then follow through the evaluation of the pressure order by order, and finally proceed to analyze the most recent, order g^6ln(g) results by comparing the perturbative predictions with lattice data. In the appendix we provide a somewhat pedagogical introduction to the most important computational techniques used in the perturbative framework, namely the analytic evaluation of multi-loop vacuum diagrams both in full QCD and in its three-dimensional high-T effective theories.

Perturbative QCD meets phase quenching: The pressure of cold quark matter

Abstract:Nonperturbative inequalities constrain the thermodynamic pressure of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) with its phase-quenched version, a Sign-Problem-free theory amenable to lattice treatment. In the perturbative regime with a small QCD coupling constant $\alpha_s$, one of these inequalities manifests as an $O(\alpha_s^3)$ difference between the phase-quenched and QCD pressures at large baryon chemical potential. In this work, we generalize state-of-the-art algorithmic techniques used in collider physics in vacuum quantum field theory to address large-scale multiloop computations at finite chemical potential, by direct numerical integration of Feynman diagrams in momentum space. Using this novel approach, we evaluate this $O(\alpha_s^3)$ difference and show that it is a gauge-independent and small positive number compared to the known perturbative coefficients at this order. This implies that at high baryon densities, phase-quenched lattice simulations can provide a complementary nonperturbative method for accurately determining the pressure of cold quark matter at $O(\alpha_s^3)$.

Bounding the QCD Equation of State with the Lattice

Abstract:The equation of state of QCD matter at high densities is relevant for neutron star structure and for neutron star mergers and has been a focus of recent work. We show how lattice QCD simulations, free of sign problems, can provide an upper bound on the pressure as a function of quark chemical potentials. We show that at large chemical potentials this bound should become quite sharp; the difference between the upper bound on the pressure P-phase-quenched and the true pressure P is of order alpha^3 P. The corrections arise from a single Feynman diagram; its calculation would render remaining corrections of order alpha^4 P.

Abstract:We study the extension of a phenomenologically successful quasiparticle model that describes lattice results of the equation of state of the deconfined phase of QCD for Tc⩽T≲4Tc, to finite quark chemical potential μ. The phase boundary line Tc(μ), the pressure difference Δp(T,μ)=[p(T,μ)−p(T,μ=0)]∕T4, and the quark number density nq(T,μ)∕T3 are calculated and compared to recent lattice results. Good agreement is found up to quark chemical potentials of order μ∼Tc.

Abstract:We propose a quasiparticle approach allowing to compute the equation of state of a generic gauge theory with gauge group SU($N_c$) and quarks in an arbitrary representation. Our formalism relies on the thermal quasiparticle masses (quarks and gluons) computed from Hard-Thermal-Loop techniques, in which the standard two-loop running coupling constant is used. Our model is minimal in the sense that we do not allow any extra ansatz concerning the temperature-dependence of the running coupling. We first show that it is able to reproduce the most recent equations of state computed on the lattice for temperatures higher than 2 $T_c$. In this range of temperatures, an ideal gas framework is indeed expected to be relevant. Then we study the accuracy of various inequivalent large-$N_c$ limits concerning the description of the QCD results, as well as the equivalence between the QCD$_{AS}$ limit and the ${\cal N}=1$ SUSY Yang-Mills theory. Finally, we estimate the dissociation temperature of the $\Upsilon$-meson and comment on the estimations' stability regarding the different considered large-$N_c$ limits.
The Pressure in 2, 2+1 and 3 Flavour QCD

Abstract:We calculate the pressure in QCD with two and three light quarks on a lattice of size 16^3x4 using tree level improved gauge and fermion actions. We argue that for temperatures T > 2T_c systematic effects due to the finite lattice cut-off and non-vanishing quark masses are below 15% in this calculation and give an estimate for the continuum extrapolated pressure in QCD with massless quarks. We find that the flavour dependence of the pressure is dominated by that of the Stefan-Boltzmann constant. Furthermore we perform a calculation of the pressure using 2 light (m_u,d/T=0.4) and one heavier quark (m_s/T = 1). In this case the pressure is reduced relative to that of three flavour QCD. This effect is stronger than expected from the mass dependence of an ideal Fermi gas.

A Model Study of the Equation of State of Qcd

Abstract:In this paper, we give a direct method for calculating the partition function, and hence the equation of state (EOS) of QCD at finite chemical potential and zero temperature. In the EOS derived in this paper, the pressure density is the sum of two terms: the first term [Formula: see text] (the pressure density at μ = 0) is a μ-independent constant; the second term, which is totally determined by G[μ](p) (the dressed quark propagator at finite μ), contains all the nontrivial μ-dependence. By applying a general result in the rainbow-ladder approximation of the Dyson–Schwinger approach obtained in our previous study, Phys. Rev. C71, 015205 (2005), G[μ](p) is calculated from the model quark propagator proposed in Phys. Rev. D20, 2947 (1979). From this the full analytic expression of the EOS of QCD at finite μ and zero T is obtained. A comparison between our EOS and the cold, perturbative EOS of QCD of Fraga, Pisarski and Schaffner-Bielich is made. It is expected that our EOS can provide a possible new approach for the study of neutron stars. In the final part of this paper, our method is generalized to the case of finite temperature and the EOS of QCD at finite μ and T is derived. A comparison is made between the EOS derived in this paper and the EOS obtained in previous literatures by directly generalizing the CJT effective action at μ = 0 and T = 0 to finite μ and finite T.

Abstract:It is shown that the textbook formula for the pressure of free massless fermions leads to negative values of the probability mass function of the distribution of the system of free massless fermions in the fermion number. The ways to resolve this paradox are proposed. A detailed analysis of the corresponding partition function indicates the presence of a Roberge-Weiss transition in the absence of strong interactions.

At small chemical potential we find that the results for the slope of constant pressure from our main model for two massless quark flavors is in good agreement with recent lattice data for 2+1 flavors while it deviates somewhat from lattice data for two flavors from another group. For zero temperature, we obtain an estimate for the critical chemical potential which is close to that obtained from simpler quasiparticle models.

Abstract:In this paper, we generalize the improved quasi-particle model proposed in Cao et al. (Phys. Lett. B 711:65, 2012 ) from finite temperature and zero chemical potential to the case of finite chemical potential and zero temperature, and calculate the equation of state (EOS) for (2+1) flavor Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) at zero temperature and high density. We first calculate the partition function at finite temperature and chemical potential, then go to the limit T =0 and obtain the equation of state (EOS) for cold and dense QCD, which is important for the study of neutron stars. Furthermore, we use this EOS to calculate the quark-number density, the energy density, the quark-number susceptibility and the speed of sound at zero temperature and finite chemical potential and compare our results with the corresponding ones in the existing literature.

Abstract:We show at very high temperature how the behaviour of the spatial 't Hooft loop in the QCD plasma is simply related to the chromo electric flux of the gluons. This simple picture is vindicated by a systematic quasi classical approach. The spatial Wilson loop 's behaviour is computed by a similar nearly free plasma of magnetic quasiparticles. This model predicts unambiguously ratios of multiply charged Wilson loops. Recent simulations confirm these predictions accurately.

Abstract:Generally speaking, the quark propagator is dependent on the quark chemical potential in the dense quantum chromodynamics (QCD). By means of the generating functional method, we prove that the quark propagator actually depends on p(4) + i mu from the first principle of QCD. The relation between quark number density and quark condensate is discussed by analyzing their singularities. It is concluded that the quark number density has some singularities at certain.. when T = 0, and the variations of the quark number density as well as the quark condensate are located at the same point. In other words, at a certain mu the quark number density turns to nonzero, while the quark condensate begins to decrease from its vacuum value.

Abstract:The perturbative three-loop result for the thermodynamic potential of QCD at finite temperature and chemical potential as obtained in the framework of dimensional reduction is compared with the exact result in the limit of large flavor number. The apparent convergence of the former as well as possibilities for optimization are investigated. Corresponding optimized results for full QCD are given for the case of two massless quark flavors.

Abstract:A first application of the equation of state (EoS) in the quark-meson-coupling (QMC) model in thermodynamic scenarios corresponding to stationary and rotating isentropic protoneutron stars (PNS), producing results in agreement with recent observation, was published recently. In addition, a tabulated form of the EoS in the parameter space suitable for use in simulations of cold binary neutron star mergers (BNS) and their time development, has been deposited for public use in the CompOSE database. However, the theoretical background of the QMC EoS of hot hyperonic matter has not yet been presented. In this work, we report, for the first time, details of the QMC theory of dense matter, including nucleons, leptons, and the full hyperon octet, extended to particle number density from nB=0 up to 1.2 fm−3 , over the temperature range 0–100 MeV, with the entropy per particle between S/A=0 and 2kB and lepton fraction from YL=0 to 0.6. The main objective of this work is to explore the effect of the exchange (Fock) terms at finite temperature, when they are self-consistently incorporated in the fully relativistic QMC Lagrangian. As already mentioned above, these terms are missing in most relativistic mean field models of hot dense hyperonic matter. We show that they have a non-negligible effect on observables of astrophysical objects and that it is essential they are included in realistic mean field calculations. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevD.109.083035 © 2024 American Physical Society

Abstract:<p>We introduce a theoretical framework to analyze the thermal properties of a recently proposed "excluded volume" model of quarkyonic matter. This entails proposing finite temperature distribution functions and entropy functionals constrained by internal theoretical consistency. We use the formalism developed here to analyze the effect of temperature on the quark onset as a function of baryon density. We find that the baryon density at which the quarkyonic phase emerges decreases only slightly with temperature, an effect produced by large <span class="math"><math>Nc</math></span>. We furthermore find that a finite temperature increases the density of quarks produced. The framework presented here can be used to compute the equation of state of hot and dense quarkyonic matter which is of relevance to neutron star mergers.</p>

Abstract:The thermodynamic behavior of QCD matter at high temperature is currently studied by lattice QCD theory. The main features are the fast rise of the energy density ϵ around the critical temperature Tc and the large trace anomaly of the energy momentum tensor ⟨Θμμ⟩=ϵ-3P, which hints at a strongly interacting system. Such features can be accounted for by employing a massive quasiparticle model with a temperature-dependent bag constant. Recent lattice QCD calculations with physical quark masses by the Wuppertal-Budapest group show a slower increase of ϵ and a smaller ⟨Θμμ⟩ peak with respect to previous results from the HotQCD Collaboration. We investigate the implications of such differences from the point of view of a quasiparticle model, also discussing light and strange quark number susceptibilities. Furthermore, we predict the impact of these discrepancies on the temperature dependence of the transport properties of matter, like the shear and bulk viscosities.
