Abstract:The physics of isolated plasma potential structures sustained by a deficit of phase-space density on trapped orbits, commonly known as electron or ion holes, is reviewed. The principles of their equilibria are explained and illustrated, and contrasted with solitons. A literature review mostly prior to 2016 highlights the key historical developments of the field. Progress since, especially in hole acceleration, stability, and multi-dimensional effects, is summarized in more detail.

Abstract: Recently published paper [PRL 114, 147701 (2015)] contains several misleading statements and misinterpretations of known facts. The main massage of the paper [PRL 114, 147701 (2015)] is as follows: "We have shown that explicit symmetry breaking in the structural configuration of charges leads to symmetry breaking of the electric field which results in electromagnetic radiation due to non-conservative current within a localized region of space and time" seems to transcend mere empiricism, touching the theoretical foundations of electromagnetism. Moreover, basic mistakes are numerous in this article and its main claim is wrong. Below we prove it citing the paper and arguing against it.
Broken Symmetry in Neoclassical Transport Theory

Abstract:A formulation of Neoclassical transport theory is given that is consistent with the traditional formulation and yet has broken “Onsager” symmetry1 for conjugate terms involving the electron heat flux and bootstrap currents. This is demonstrated for the electron Lorentz transport model for the purely collisional theory. Such a symmetry breaking has been previously suggested2 but the argument invoked turbulence effects. The terms involved in the present theory are not the ones discussed in the previous work. We show that the symmetry can be mathematically restored by adding certain reactive flow terms to both the Ohmic heating and the electron heat flux, but such an artifice does not represent a clear picture of physical reality (it requires adding non-dissipative terms from the collisionless bootstrap current to the Ohmic heating). We claim that the non-symmetric formulation gives the clearest picture of physical reality, i.e. Neoclassical transport should not be considered an Onsager symmetric theory. The main contribution of the formulation presented is to clarify physically the microscopic processes involved and to distinguish collisionless orbit effects (like the Ware pinch and certain banana-diamagnetic bootstrap current terms), which do not have Onsager symmetry from collisional processes that do. Such understandings are important, we claim, as theory is applied in more complex geometries and extended to include turbulence and collisions in combination. 1L. Onsager, Phys. Plasma electron-hole kinematics: momentum conservation

Abstract:We analyse the kinematic properties of a plasma electron hole: a non-linear self-sustained localized positive electric potential perturbation, trapping electrons, that behaves as a coherent entity. When a hole accelerates or grows in depth, ion and electron plasma momentum is changed both within the hole and outside it, by an energization process we call jetting. We present a comprehensive analytic calculation of the momentum changes of an isolated general one-dimensional hole. The conservation of the total momentum gives the hole's kinematics, determining its velocity evolution. Our results explain many features of the behavior of hole speed observed in numerical simulations, including self-acceleration at formation, and hole pushing and trapping by ion streams.

Electron phase-space hole transverse instability at high magnetic field

Abstract:Analytic treatment is presented of the electrostatic instability of an initially planar electron hole in a plasma of effectively infinite particle magnetization. It is shown that there is an unstable mode consisting of a rigid shift of the hole in the trapping direction. Its low frequency is determined by the real part of the force balance between the Maxwell stress arising from the transverse wavenumber $k$ and the kinematic jetting from the hole’s acceleration. The very low growth rate arises from a delicate balance in the imaginary part of the force between the passing-particle jetting, which is destabilizing, and the resonant response of the trapped particles, which is stabilizing. Nearly universal scalings of the complex frequency and $k$ with hole depth are derived. Particle in cell simulations show that the slow-growing instabilities previously investigated as coupled hole–wave phenomena occur at the predicted frequency, but with growth rates 2 to 4 times greater than the analytic prediction. This higher rate may be caused by a reduced resonant stabilization because of numerical phase-space diffusion in the simulations.

Abstract:In the paper "Andrew D.P. Smith, Peter T. Haugen, Boyd F. Edwards: Hysteretic transition between states of a filled hexagonal magnetic dipole cluster, Journal of Magnetism and Magnetic Materials 549 (2022): 168991" a hysteretic transition between two stable arrangements of a cluster of seven dipoles is presented. The relative strength of the center dipole in a hexagonal arrangement serves as the bifurcation parameter. The authors clearly demonstrate the existence of two instabilities accompanied by discontinuous jumps of the dipole arrangement, but leave the question about the nature of these instabilities unanswered. This comment clarifies the nature of the two instabilities: the first one is a symmetry-breaking sub-critical bifurcation with parabolic scaling of the magnetic potential energy difference between the two branches, and the second one is a fold with its characteristic scaling in the form of a semi-cubic parabola.

Coherent Structures in One-dimensional Buneman Instability Nonlinear Simulations

Abstract:Long-duration one-dimensional PIC simulations are presented of Buneman-unstable, initially Maxwellian, electron and ion distributions shifted with respect to one another, providing detailed phase-space videos of the time-dependence. The final state of high initial ion temperature cases is dominated by fast electron holes, but when initial ion temperature is less than approximately four times the electron temperature, ion density modulation produces potential perturbations of approximately ion-acoustic character, modified by the electron distribution shift. Early in the nonlinear phase, they often have electron holes trapped in them ("coupled hole-solitons": CHS). In high-available-energy cases, when major broadening of the electron distribution occurs, both electron holes and coupled hole-solitons can be reflected, giving persistent counter-propagating potential peaks. Analytical theory is presented of steady nonlinear potential structures in model nonlinear particle distribution plasmas with Buneman unstable parameters. It compares favorably in some respects with the nonlinear simulations, but not with the later phases when the electron velocity distributions are greatly modified.

Abstract:In their comment <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="cond-mat/9710285" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/cond-mat/9710285">cond-mat/9710285</a> [Phys. Rev. Lett. 80, 5024 (1998)] den Hartog and van Wees (HW) raise objections against our analysis of the experimental data presented in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="cond-mat/9708162" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/cond-mat/9708162">cond-mat/9708162</a> [Phys. Rev. Lett. 79, 1547 (1997)]. According to HW, we did not account for the quantum phase incoherence introduced by the Niobium compounds of the investigated Nb/Au hybrid samples. Here we show that and why this criticism is not justified. Some difficulties associated with a precise determination of the coherence lengths are discussed. It is discussed why these uncertainties do not have a qualitative impact on the results reported in our paper.

Theory of electron and ion holes as vortices in the phase-space of collision-less plasmas

Abstract:This article studies the vortical nature and structure of phase-space holes -- nonlinear B.G.K. trapping modes found in the phase-space collision-free plasmas. A fluid-like outlook of the particles' phase-space is explored, which makes it convenient to analytically identify electron and ion holes as vortices -- similar to that of ordinary two-dimensional fluids. A fluid velocity is defined for the phase-space of the electrons and ions, continuity and momentum equations describing the flow of the phase-space fluid representing the particle system are then developed. Pressure formation and associated diffusion in phase-space of such systems is introduced and a vorticity field of the phase-space is then defined. Using these equations, electron holes and ion holes are analytically identified as vortices in the phase-space of the plasma. A relation between Schamel's trapping parameter ($\beta$), hole speed ($M$), hole phase-space depth ($-\Gamma$) and hole potential amplitude ($\chi_0$) is derived. The approach introduces a new technique to study the phase-space holes of collision-less plasmas, allowing fluid-vortex-like treatment to these kinetic structures. Phase-space distribution functions for electron hole regions can then be analytically derived from this model, reproducing the schamel-df equations and thus acting as a precursor to the pseudo-potential approach, avoiding the need to assume a solution to the phase-space density.

Abstract:Using holographic calculations, we examine a key assumption made in Jacobson's recent argument for deriving Einstein's equations from vacuum entanglement entropy. Our results involving relevant operators with low conformal dimensions seem to conflict with Jacobson's assumption. However, we discuss ways to circumvent this problem.
On the linearity and stability of electrostatic structures based on the Schamel equation

Abstract:This paper contributes in the first part to the correct understanding of the linear limit in the Schamel equation (S-equation) from the perspective of structure formation in collisionless plasmas. The corresponding modes near equilibrium turn out to be nonlinear modes of the underlying microscopic Vlasov-Poisson (VP) system for which particle trapping is responsible. A simple shift of the electrostatic potential to a new pedestal leads to non-negativity and thus mitigates the positivity problem of the S-equation. The stability of a solitary electron hole (bright soliton), based on both the S-equation and an earlier transverse but limited VP instability analysis, exhibits marginal stability and linear perturbations in the form of the asymmetric shift eigenmode of a solvable Schrödinger problem. This finding of a dominant shift mode perturbation also seems to have been observed in a numerical PIC simulation, thus providing some confirmation for both theories.

Abstract:In the comment by <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://T.Dauxois" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> et al.,(<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="cond-mat/0605445" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/cond-mat/0605445">cond-mat/0605445</a>), the authors question our application of the nonextensive statistical mechanics proposed by Tsallis, to explain the anomalous dynamics of the Hamiltonian Mean Field (HMF) model. More specifically they claim that the explanation of the metastability found in the out-of-equilibrium dynamics is only a fitting procedure and is also in contrast with a previous application. This criticism mostly relies on recent studies based on the Vlasov approach, where the authors claim to explain the anomalous behaviour of the HMF model in terms of a standard formalism. In order to reply to this comment we want to stress a few numerical facts and conclude with some final considerations. A recent paper by P-H. Chavanis (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="cond-mat/0604234" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/cond-mat/0604234">cond-mat/0604234</a>) is also important to clarify the question here debated.

Abstract:In the above paper (see ibid., vol.37, p.192, 1995) the authors went to great lengths to derive an explicit solution in terms of incomplete Lipschitz-Hankel integrals (ILHI's) to the propagation problem of a double exponential pulse in a homogeneous medium. Technically, He has no doubt on the correctness of their ILHI representation. However, He doubts their claim about the computational efficiency of the ILHI representation. Abstract:We comment on a work by T. Liverpool (Phys. Rev. E 101 (2020)). We show that a theorem stated in that work is not correct. While this is inconsequential to the bulk of the work (and holds asymptotically as we show), it is instructive to highlight the importance of phase space compression in active systems with generalized dynamics.

Abstract:The time evolutions of the Bohm sheath and the related pre-sheath are analyzed as an initial value problem. The standard classical fluid model of a collisionless plasma is used with cold ions and Boltzmann distributed electrons. Numerical solutions of the basic equations show that a stationary plasma sheath itself is established within a few ion plasma periods. It is demonstrated analytically that for infinitely extended homogeneous plasmas in one spatial dimension, the only possible pre-sheath solution is dynamic, giving a steady expansion: no stationary solution exists for this one-dimensional case. The potential and density drops along the dynamic pre-sheath differ notably from the values found for stationary models suggested in the literature. Collisions give only formal changes to the collisionless results, and their substance remains the same in one spatial dimension. Cylindrical and spherical geometries, on the other hand, allow for physically acceptable, fully nonlinear, stationary solutions with analytical results given. These are supported by numerical solutions.

Abstract:Coherent bipolar electric field structures with negative unipolar potentials are widely observed in space plasmas. These bipolar structures are often found to be ion Bernstein Greene Kruskal (BGK) modes or ion holes. Most theoretical models of ion holes assume them to be stationary with respect to the background plasma that follows either Maxwellian or kappa-type distribution. In this paper, we present a new theoretical model of ion holes where the structures are non-stationary, and electrons follow flat-topped distribution. We use the classical BGK approach to derive the inequality separating allowed and forbidden simultaneous values of amplitude and spatial width of ion holes. The model reveals that the parametric space for the existence of ion holes decreases with their speed. We applied the developed model to the largest available dataset of ion holes obtained from the magnetospheric multiscale spacecraft observations in the Earth's bow shock region.
