Abstract:This article studies the vortical nature and structure of phase-space holes -- nonlinear B.G.K. trapping modes found in the phase-space collision-free plasmas. A fluid-like outlook of the particles' phase-space is explored, which makes it convenient to analytically identify electron and ion holes as vortices -- similar to that of ordinary two-dimensional fluids. A fluid velocity is defined for the phase-space of the electrons and ions, continuity and momentum equations describing the flow of the phase-space fluid representing the particle system are then developed. Pressure formation and associated diffusion in phase-space of such systems is introduced and a vorticity field of the phase-space is then defined. Using these equations, electron holes and ion holes are analytically identified as vortices in the phase-space of the plasma. A relation between Schamel's trapping parameter ($\beta$), hole speed ($M$), hole phase-space depth ($-\Gamma$) and hole potential amplitude ($\chi_0$) is derived. The approach introduces a new technique to study the phase-space holes of collision-less plasmas, allowing fluid-vortex-like treatment to these kinetic structures. Phase-space distribution functions for electron hole regions can then be analytically derived from this model, reproducing the schamel-df equations and thus acting as a precursor to the pseudo-potential approach, avoiding the need to assume a solution to the phase-space density.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper attempts to solve the following two main problems: 1. **Confirm the vortex nature of electron and ion phase - space holes**: - The main purpose of the paper is to confirm, through theoretical analysis, whether electron and ion phase - space holes (phase - space holes) can be identified as vortex structures in the phase - space. These phase - space holes are kinetic structures formed by the nonlinear particle trapping mechanism in collisionless plasmas. - The author uses the method of hydrodynamic analogy, regards the phase - space as a two - dimensional fluid, and describes these structures by introducing the continuity and momentum equations in the phase - space. 2. **Provide new analysis methods and techniques**: - The author proposes a new technical framework that allows these kinetic structures to be treated in the way of fluid vortices. This not only provides a new understanding of phase - space holes, but also avoids the need to assume the phase - space density solution during the research process. - Specifically, the paper derives the relationships between Schamel's trapping parameter (\(\beta\)), hole velocity (\(M\)), hole phase - space depth (\(-\Gamma\)) and hole potential amplitude (\(\chi_0\)), and shows how to derive the Schamel distribution function (schamel - df equations) from this model, thus serving as a precursor to the pseudo - potential method. ### Key Formulas - **Definition of Trapping Parameter \(\beta\)**: \[ \beta = -\frac{T_e}{T_{tr}} \] where \(T_e\) is the plasma electron temperature and \(T_{tr}\) is the temperature of the trapped electrons. - **Relationship between Hole Velocity \(M\) and Boundary Phase - space Density**: \[ \beta = \sqrt{-\ln(f_{tr,bd})} \] where \(f_{tr,bd}\) is the phase - space density at the hole boundary. - **Relationship between Hole Phase - space Depth \(\Gamma\) and Potential Amplitude \(\chi_0\)**: \[ \beta = \frac{\Gamma}{\chi_0} \] where \(\Gamma=\ln f_{tr,min}-\ln f_{tr,bd}\), representing the depth of the phase - space vortex on the \(\log f(x, v_x)\) surface. ### Summary By introducing the method of hydrodynamic analogy, the paper not only confirms the vortex nature of electron and ion phase - space holes, but also provides a new analytical tool, making the study of these complex structures more intuitive and systematic. This method provides a solid foundation for future research and helps to gain a deeper understanding of the nonlinear dynamic phenomena in collisionless plasmas.
