Abstract:Given two closed contact three-manifolds, one can form their contact connected sum via the Weinstein one-handle attachment. We study how pseudo-holomorphic curves in the symplectization behave under this operation. As a result, we give a connected sum formula for embedded contact homology.

Abstract:We define and study the contact cut graph which is an analogue of Hatcher and Thurston's cut graph for contact geometry, inspired by contact Heegaard splittings. We show how oriented paths in the contact cut graph correspond to Lefschetz fibrations and multisection with divides diagrams. We also give a correspondence for achiral Lefschetz fibrations. We use these correspondences to define a new invariant of Weinstein domains, the Weinstein $\mathcal{L}$-invariant, that is a symplectic analogue of the Kirby-Thompson's $\mathcal{L}$-invariant of smooth $4$-manifolds. We discuss the relation of Lefschetz stabilization with the Weinstein $\mathcal{L}$-invariant. We present topological and geometric constraints of Weinstein domains with $\mathcal{L}=0$. We also give two families of examples of multisections with divides that have arbitrarily large $\mathcal{L}$-invariant.

Abstract:The goal of this paper is to set up the general framework of higher‐dimensional Heegaard Floer homology, define the contact class, and use it to give an obstruction to the Liouville fillability of a contact manifold and a sufficient condition for the Weinstein conjecture to hold. We discuss several classes of examples including those coming from analyzing a close cousin of symplectic Khovanov homology and the analog of the Plamenevskaya invariant of transverse links.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce the notions of an iterated planar Lefschetz fibration and an iterated planar open book decomposition and prove the Weinstein conjecture for contact manifolds supporting an open book that has iterated planar pages. For $n\geq 1$, we show that a $(2n+1)$-dimensional contact manifold $M$ supporting an iterated planar open book decomposition satisfies the Weinstein conjecture.

Abstract:We compute the connected Heegaard Floer homology (defined by Hendricks, Hom, and Lidman) for a large class of 3-manifolds, including all linear combinations of Seifert fibered homology spheres. We show that for such manifolds, the connected Floer homology completely determines the local equivalence class of the associated $\iota$-complex. Some identities relating the rank of the connected Floer homology to the Rokhlin invariant and the Neumann-Siebenmann invariant are also derived. Our computations are based on combinatorial models inspired by the work of Némethi on lattice homology.

Exotic Dehn twists on sums of two contact 3-manifolds

Abstract:We exhibit the first examples of exotic contactomorphisms with infinite order as elements of the contact mapping class group. These are given by certain Dehn twists on the separating sphere in a connected sum of two closed contact 3-manifolds. We detect these by a combination of hard and soft techniques. On the one hand, we make essential use of an invariant for families of contact structures which generalises the Kronheimer--Mrowka contact invariant in monopole Floer homology. We then exploit an h-principle for families of convex spheres in tight contact 3-manifolds, from which we establish a parametric version of Colin's decomposition theorem. As a further application, we also exhibit new exotic 1-parametric phenomena in overtwisted contact 3-manifolds.

Abstract:For Reeb vector fields on closed 3-manifolds, cylindrical contact homology is used to show that the existence of a set of closed Reeb orbit with certain knotting/linking properties implies the existence of other Reeb orbits with other knotting/linking properties relative to the original set. We work out a few examples on the 3-sphere to illustrate the theory, and describe an application to closed geodesics on $S^2$ (a version of a result due to Angenent).

Abstract:How does one measure the failure of Hochschild homology to commute with colimits? Here, I relate this question to a major open problem about dynamics in contact manifolds—the assertion that Reeb orbits exist and are detected by symplectic homology. More precisely, I show that for polarizably Weinstein fillable contact manifolds, said property is equivalent to the failure of Hochschild homology to commute with certain colimits of representation categories of tree quivers. So as to be intelligible to algebraists, I try to include or black-box as much of the geometric background as possible.

Contact Structures on Folded Sums of Contact Mapping Tori and Surface Bundles

Abstract:We introduce a ''folded sum operation'' which glues two compact mapping tori along their common (diffeomorphic) boundaries. We call the resulting closed manifold a ''folded sum of mapping tori'', and it naturally fibers over the circle. We show that any folded sum $M$ of two ''contact'' mapping tori (their fibers are compact exact symplectic manifolds with contactomorphic convex boundaries) admits a cooriented contact structure which is ''compatible'' (in a certain sense) with the resulting fibration map from $M$ onto the circle. Moreover, we study the tightness of the resulting contact structure on $M$ for certain cases. This gives a new method of constructing closed contact manifolds in any odd dimension. In particular, it recovers some earlier constructions and results. More interestingly, in dimension three, it provides the existence of tight contact structures on a large class of (hyperbolic) surface bundles over the circle.

Abstract:We prove a number of fundamental properties about instanton knot Floer homology. Our arguments rely on general properties of sutured Floer theories and apply also in the Heegaard Floer and monopole Floer settings, where many of our results were already known. Our main result is the connected sum formula for instanton knot Floer homology. An extension of this result proves the oriented skein exact triangle for the minus version of instanton knot Floer homology. Finally, we derive a new model of the minus version of instanton knot Floer homology, which takes the form of a free, finitely generated chain complex over a polynomial ring, as opposed to a direct limit. This construction is new to all of the Floer theories. We explore these results also in the context of Heegaard Floer theory as well.

Abstract:We prove the equivalence of the sutured versions of Heegaard Floer homology, monopole Floer homology, and embedded contact homology. As applications we show that the knot versions of Heegaard Floer homology and embedded contact homology are equivalent and that product sutured 3-manifolds are characterized by the fact that they carry an adapted Reeb vector field without periodic orbits.

Abstract:In this paper we are interested in characterizing the standard contact sphere in terms of dynamically convex contact manifolds which admit a Liouville filling with vanishing symplectic homology. We first observe that if the filling is flexible, then those contact manifolds are contactomorphic to the standard contact sphere. We then investigate quantitative geometry of those contact manifolds focusing on similarities with the standard contact sphere in filtered symplectic homology.

Abstract:It is well-known that the Heegaard genus is additive under connected sum of 3-manifolds. We show that the Heegaard genus of contact 3-manifolds is not necessarily additive under contact connected sum. We also prove some basic properties of the contact genus (a.k.a. open book genus [Rubinstein J.H., Comparing open book and Heegaard decompositions of 3-manifolds, Turkish J. Math., 2003, 27(1), 189–196]) of 3-manifolds, and compute this invariant for some 3-manifolds.

Abstract:We propose the study of some kind of monopole equations directly associated with a contact structure. Through a rudimentary analysis about the solutions, we show that a closed contact 3-manifold with positive Tanaka-Webster curvature and vanishing torsion must be either not symplectically semifillable or having torsion Euler class of the contact structure.

Abstract:We establish the relationship between folded symplectic forms and convex hypersurface theory in contact topology. As an application, we use convex hypersurface theory to reprove and strengthen the existence result for folded symplectic forms due to Cannas da Silva, and we generalize to all even dimensions Baykur's 4-dimensional existence result of folded Weinstein structures and folded Lefschetz fibrations.

Abstract:Let $\widehat{\mathcal{C}}_\mathbb{Z}$ be the group consists of manifold-knot pairs $(Y,K)$ modulo homology concordance, where $Y$ is an integer homology sphere bounding an integer homology ball, and let $\mathcal{C}_\mathbb{Z}$ be the subgroup consisting of pairs $(S^3,K)$. Dai-Hom-Stoffregen-Truong show that the quotient group ${\widehat{\mathcal{C}}_\mathbb{Z}}/{\mathcal{C}_\mathbb{Z}}$ admits a $\mathbb{Z}^\infty$-summand. In this paper, we improve the result by showing that there exists a family $\{(Y,K_m)\}_{m>1 }$ generating the $\mathbb{Z}^\infty$-summand where $Y$ is the boundary of a smooth contractible $4$-manifold. In fact, we give a $\mathbb{Z}$-count of such families. The examples are constructed using a family of knots obtained by blowing down a component of a two-bridge link. They are studied in Jonathan Hales's thesis. Using the algorithm due to Ozsváth, Szabó and Hales we give a classification of the knot Floer homology of a larger family of such knots, that might be of independent interest.
