As applications we show that the knot versions of Heegaard Floer homology and embedded contact homology are equivalent and that product sutured 3-manifolds are characterized by the fact that they carry an adapted Reeb vector field without periodic orbits.

Abstract:Knot filtered embedded contact homology was first introduced by Hutchings in 2015; it has been computed for the standard transverse unknot in irrational ellipsoids by Hutchings and for the Hopf link in lens spaces L(n,n−1) via a quotient by Weiler. While toric constructions can be used to understand the ECH chain complexes of many contact forms adapted to open books with binding the unknot and Hopf link, they do not readily adapt to general torus knots and links. In this paper, we generalize the definition and invariance of knot filtered embedded contact homology to allow for degenerate knots with rational rotation numbers. We then develop new methods for understanding the embedded contact homology chain complex of positive torus knotted fibrations of the standard tight contact 3‐sphere in terms of their presentation as open books and as Seifert fiber spaces. We provide Morse–Bott methods, using a doubly filtered complex and the energy filtered perturbed Seiberg–Witten Floer theory developed by Hutchings and Taubes, and use them to compute the T(2,q) knot filtered embedded contact homology, for q odd and positive.

Abstract:Given two closed contact three-manifolds, one can form their contact connected sum via the Weinstein one-handle attachment. We study how pseudo-holomorphic curves in the symplectization behave under this operation. As a result, we give a connected sum formula for embedded contact homology.

Abstract:We use the theory of sutured TQFT to classify contact elements in the sutured Floer homology, with $\Z$ coefficients, of certain sutured manifolds of the form $(\Sigma \times S^1, F \times S^1)$ where $\Sigma$ is an annulus or punctured torus. Using this classification, we give a new proof that the contact invariant in sutured Floer homology with $\Z$ coefficients of a contact structure with Giroux torsion vanishes. We also give a new proof of Massot's theorem that the contact invariant vanishes for a contact structure on $(\Sigma \times S^1, F \times S^1)$ described by an isolating dividing set.

Abstract:For Reeb vector fields on closed 3-manifolds, cylindrical contact homology is used to show that the existence of a set of closed Reeb orbit with certain knotting/linking properties implies the existence of other Reeb orbits with other knotting/linking properties relative to the original set. We work out a few examples on the 3-sphere to illustrate the theory, and describe an application to closed geodesics on $S^2$ (a version of a result due to Angenent).

Abstract:We consider contact elements in the sutured Floer homology of solid tori with longitudinal sutures, as part of the (1+1)-dimensional topological quantum field theory defined by Honda--Kazez--Matić in \cite{HKM08}. The $\Z_2$ $SFH$ of these solid tori forms a "categorification of Pascal's triangle", and contact structures correspond bijectively to chord diagrams, or sets of disjoint properly embedded arcs in the disc. Their contact elements are distinct and form distinguished subsets of $SFH$ of order given by the Narayana numbers. We find natural "creation and annihilation operators" which allow us to define a QFT-type basis of $SFH$, consisting of contact elements. Sutured Floer homology in this case reduces to the combinatorics of chord diagrams. We prove that contact elements are in bijective correspondence with comparable pairs of basis elements with respect to a certain partial order. The algebraic and combinatorial structures in this description have intrinsic contact-topological meaning. In particular, the QFT-basis of $SFH$ and its partial order have a natural interpretation in pure contact topology, related to the contact category of a disc: the partial order enables us to tell when the sutured solid cylinder obtained by "stacking" two chord diagrams has a tight contact structure. This leads us to extend Honda's notion of contact category to a "bounded" contact category, containing chord diagrams and contact structures which occur within a given contact solid cylinder. We compute this bounded contact category in certain cases. Moreover, the decomposition of a contact element into basis elements naturally gives a triple of contact structures on solid cylinders which we regard as a type of "distinguished triangle" in the contact category. We also use the algebraic structures arising among contact elements to extend the notion of contact category to a 2-category.

On contact invariants in bordered Floer homology

Abstract:In this paper, we define contact invariants in bordered sutured Floer homology. Given a contact 3-manifold with convex boundary, we apply a result of Zarev (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1010.3496" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1010.3496">arXiv:1010.3496</a>) to derive contact invariants in the bordered sutured modules $\widehat{\mathit{BSA}}$ and $\widehat{\mathit{BSD}}$, as well as in bimodules $\widehat{\mathit{BSAA}},$ $\widehat{\mathit{BSDD}},$ $\widehat{\mathit{BSDA}}$ in the case of two boundary components. In the connected boundary case, our invariants appear to agree with bordered contact invariants defined by Alishahi-Földvári-Hendricks-Licata-Petkova-Vértesi (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2011.08672" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2011.08672">arXiv:2011.08672</a>) whenever the latter are defined, although ours can be defined in broader contexts. We prove that these invariants satisfy a pairing theorem, which is a bordered extension of the Honda-Kazez-Matić gluing map (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="0705.2828" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/0705.2828">arXiv:0705.2828</a>) for sutured Floer homology. We also show that there is a correspondence between certain $\mathcal{A}_{\infty}$ operations in bordered type-$A$ modules and bypass attachment maps in sutured Floer homology. As an application, we characterize the Stipsicz-Vértesi map from $\mathit{SFH}$ to $\widehat{\mathit{HFK}}$ as an $\mathcal{A}_{\infty}$ action on $\widehat{\mathit{CFA}}$. We also apply the immersed curve interpretation of Hanselman-Rasmussen-Watson (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1604.03466" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1604.03466">arXiv:1604.03466</a>) to prove results involving contact surgery.

Abstract:Q-Gorenstein toric contact manifolds provide an interesting class of examples of contact manifolds with torsion first Chern class. They are completely determined by certain rational convex polytopes, called toric diagrams, and arise both as links of toric isolated singularities and as prequantizations of monotone toric symplectic orbifolds. In this paper we show how the cylindrical contact homology invariants of a Q-Gorenstein toric contact manifold are related to (i) the Ehrhart (quasi-)polynomial of its toric diagram; (ii) the Chen-Ruan cohomology of any crepant toric orbifold resolution of its corresponding toric isolated singularity; (iii) the Chen-Ruan cohomology of any monotone toric symplectic orbifold base that gives rise to it through prequantization.

Abstract:We develop the details of a surgery theory for contact manifolds of arbitrary dimension via convex structures, extending the 3-dimensional theory developed by Giroux. The theory is analogous to that of Weinstein manifolds in symplectic geometry, with the key difference that the vector field does not necessarily have positive divergence everywhere. The surgery theory for contact manifolds contains the surgery theory for Weinstein manifolds via a sutured model for attaching critical points of low index. Using this sutured model, we show that the existence of convex structures on closed contact manifolds is guaranteed, a result equivalent to the existence of supporting Weinstein open book decompositions.

Abstract:Nuclear weak interaction rates for fp-shell nuclei in stellar matter and the associated energy losses are calculated using a modified form of proton-neutron quasiparticle RPA model with separable Gamow-Teller forces. The stellar weak rates are calculated over a wide range of densities (10 < \rho Y_{e} (gcm^{-3}) < 10^{11}) and temperatures (10^{7} < T(K) < 30 x 10^{9}). This is the first ever extensive compilation of weak interaction rates in stellar matter calculated over a wide temperature-density grid and over a larger mass range. The calculated capture and decay rates take into consideration the latest experimental energy levels and ft value compilations. We have calculated stellar weak interaction rates for a total of 619 nuclei in the mass range A = 40 to 100. These also include many important neutron-rich nuclei which play an important role in the evolution process of stellar collapse. This is our second paper in a series where we will be presenting our results on an abbreviated scale of temperature and density for the mass range A = 18 to 100. This paper contains the stellar weak rates in the mass range 40 to 60.

Abstract:Active phenomena which involve force generation and motion play a key role in a number of phenomena in living cells such as cell motility, muscle contraction and the active transport of material and organelles. Here we discuss mechanical oscillations generated by active systems in cells. Examples are oscillatory regimes in muscles, the periodic beating of axonemal cilia and flagella and spontaneous oscillations of auditory hair cells which play a role in active amplification of weak sounds in hearing. As a prototype system for oscillation generation by proteins, we discuss a general mechanism by which many coupled active elements such as motor molecules can generate oscillations.

Abstract:We describe the natural gluing map on sutured Floer homology which is induced by the inclusion of one sutured manifold (M',\Gamma') into a larger sutured manifold (M,\Gamma), together with a contact structure on M-M'. As an application of this gluing map, we produce a (1+1)-dimensional TQFT by dimensional reduction and study its properties.

Abstract:Knot contact homology is an ambient isotopy invariant of knots and links in $\mathbb R^3$. The purpose of this paper is to extend this definition to an ambient isotopy invariant of tangles and prove that gluing of tangles gives a gluing formula for knot contact homology. As a consequence of the gluing formula we obtain that the tangle contact homology detects triviality of tangles.

Abstract:We present a topological interpretation of knot and braid contact homology in degree zero, in terms of cords and skein relations. This interpretation allows us to extend the knot invariant to embedded graphs and higher-dimensional knots. We calculate the knot invariant for two-bridge knots and relate it to double branched covers for general knots. In the appendix we show that the cord ring is determined by the fundamental group and peripheral structure of a knot and give applications.
Contact Structures on Folded Sums of Contact Mapping Tori and Surface Bundles

Abstract:We introduce a ''folded sum operation'' which glues two compact mapping tori along their common (diffeomorphic) boundaries. We call the resulting closed manifold a ''folded sum of mapping tori'', and it naturally fibers over the circle. We show that any folded sum $M$ of two ''contact'' mapping tori (their fibers are compact exact symplectic manifolds with contactomorphic convex boundaries) admits a cooriented contact structure which is ''compatible'' (in a certain sense) with the resulting fibration map from $M$ onto the circle. Moreover, we study the tightness of the resulting contact structure on $M$ for certain cases. This gives a new method of constructing closed contact manifolds in any odd dimension. In particular, it recovers some earlier constructions and results. More interestingly, in dimension three, it provides the existence of tight contact structures on a large class of (hyperbolic) surface bundles over the circle.

A contact McKay correspondence for links of simple singularities

Abstract:We compute the cylindrical contact homology of the links of the simple singularities. These manifolds are contactomorphic to $S^3/G$ for finite subgroups $G\subset SU(2)$. We perturb the degenerate contact form on $S^3/G$ with a Morse function, which is invariant under the corresponding $H\subset SO(3)$ action on $S^2$, to achieve nondegeneracy up to an action threshold. The cylindrical contact homology is recovered by taking a direct limit of the action filtered homology groups. The ranks of this homology are given in terms of $|\text{Conj}(G)|$, demonstrating a Floer theoretic McKay correspondence.

We use basic properties of knot groups to prove that knot contact homology detects every torus knot.
