Abstract:Let $S$ and $S'$ be orientable finite-type surfaces of genus $g\geq 4$ and $g'$, respectively. We prove that every multitwist-preserving map between pure mapping class groups $\text{PMap}(S)\to \text{PMap}(S')$ is induced by a multi-embedding. As an application, we classify all homomorphisms $\text{PMap}(S)\to \text{PMap}(S')$ for $g\geq 4$ and $g' \leq 6\cdot 2^{g-4}$.

Finding and Combining Indicable Subgroups of Big Mapping Class Groups

Abstract:We explicitly construct new subgroups of the mapping class groups of an uncountable collection of infinite-type surfaces, including, but not limited to, right-angled Artin groups, free groups, Baumslag-Solitar groups, mapping class groups of other surfaces, and a large collection of wreath products. For each such subgroup $H$ and surface $S$, we show that there are countably many non-conjugate embeddings of $H$ into $\text{Map}(S)$; in certain cases, there are uncountably many such embeddings. The images of each of these embeddings cannot lie in the isometry group of $S$ for any hyperbolic metric and are not contained in the closure of the compactly supported subgroup of $\text{Map}(S)$. In this sense, our construction is new and does not rely on previously known techniques for constructing subgroups of mapping class groups. Notably, our embeddings of $\text{Map}(S')$ into $\text{Map}(S)$ are not induced by embeddings of $S'$ into $S$. Our main tool for all of these constructions is the utilization of special homeomorphisms of $S$ called shift maps, and more generally, multipush maps.

Abstract:Given a compact orientable surface, the mapping class group is shown to have a presentation so that the generators are the set of all Dehn twists and the relations are supported in subsurfaces homeomorphic to the one-holed torus or the four-holed sphere. It turns out that all the relations were discovered by Dehn in 1938.

Abstract:For any infinite-type surface $S$, a natural question is whether the homology of its mapping class group contains any non-trivial classes that are supported on (i) a compact subsurface or (ii) a finite-type subsurface. Our purpose here is to study this question, in particular giving an almost-complete answer when the genus of $S$ is positive (including infinite) and a partial answer when the genus of $S$ is zero. Our methods involve the notion of shiftable subsurfaces as well as homological stability for mapping class groups of finite-type surfaces.

The Dehn twist coefficient for big and small mapping class groups

Abstract:We study a quasimorphism, which we call the Dehn twist coefficient (DTC), from the mapping class group of a surface (with a chosen compact boundary component) that generalizes the well-studied fractional Dehn twist coefficient (FDTC) to surfaces of infinite type. Indeed, for surfaces of finite type the DTC coincides with the FDTC. We provide a characterization of the DTC (and thus also of the FDTC) as the unique homogeneous quasimorphism satisfying certain positivity conditions. The FDTC has image contained in $\mathbb{Q}$. In contrast to this, we find that for some surfaces of infinite type the DTC has image all of $\mathbb{R}$. To see this we provide a new construction of maps with irrational rotation behavior for some surfaces of infinite type with a countable space of ends or even just one end. In fact, we find that the DTC is the right tool to detect irrational rotation behavior, even for surfaces without boundary.

Abstract:Following the completion of the algebraic construction of the Poisson wild character varieties (B.--Yamakawa, 2015) one can consider their natural deformations, generalising both the mapping class group actions on the usual (tame) character varieties, and the G-braid groups already known to occur in the wild/irregular setting. Here we study these wild mapping class groups in the case of arbitrary formal structure in type A. As we will recall, this story is most naturally phrased in terms of admissible deformations of wild Riemann surfaces. The main results are: 1) the construction of configuration spaces containing all possible local deformations, 2) the definition of a combinatorial object, the ``fission forest'', of any wild Riemann surface and a proof that it gives a sharp parameterisation of all the admissible deformation classes. As an application of 1), by considering basic examples, we show that the braid groups of all the complex reflection groups known as the generalised symmetric groups appear as wild mapping class groups. As an application of 2), we compute the dimensions of all the (global) moduli spaces of type A wild Riemann surfaces (in fixed admissible deformation classes), a generalisation of the famous ``Riemann's count'' of the dimensions of the moduli spaces of compact Riemann surfaces.

Abstract:This paper uses the renowned Kechris-Pestov-Todorčević machinery to show that (big) mapping class groups are not extremely amenable unless the underlying surface is a sphere or a once-punctured sphere, or equivalently when the mapping class group is trivial. The same techniques also show that the pure mapping class groups, as well as compactly supported mapping class groups, of a surface with genus at least one can never be extremely amenable.

Abstract:We study the quotient of the mapping class group $\operatorname{Mod}_g^n$ of a surface of genus $g$ with $n$ punctures, by the subgroup $\operatorname{Mod}_g^n[p]$ generated by the $p$-th powers of Dehn twists. Our first main result is that $\operatorname{Mod}_g^1 /\operatorname{Mod}_g^1[p]$ contains an infinite normal subgroup of infinite index, and in particular is not commensurable to a higher-rank lattice, for all but finitely many explicit values of $p$. Next, we prove that $\operatorname{Mod}_g^0/ \operatorname{Mod}_g^0[p]$ contains a Kähler subgroup of finite index, for every $p\ge 2$ coprime with six. Finally, we observe that the existence of finite-index subgroups of $\operatorname{Mod}_g^0$ with infinite abelianization is equivalent to the analogous problem for $\operatorname{Mod}_g^0/ \operatorname{Mod}_g^0[p]$.

Abstract:Let $\phi \in {\rm Mod}(\Sigma)$ be an arbitrary element of the mapping class group of a closed orientable surface $\Sigma$ of genus at least $2$. For any characteristic cover $\widetilde{\Sigma} \to \Sigma$ one can consider the linear subspace ${\rm H}_1^{f.o.}(\widetilde{\Sigma}, \mathbb{Q})^\phi \subseteq {\rm H}_1(\widetilde{\Sigma}, \mathbb{Q})$ consisting of all homology classes with finite $\phi$-orbit. We prove that $\dim {\rm H}_1^{f.o.}(\widetilde{\Sigma}, \mathbb{Q})^\phi$ can be arbitrary large for any fixed $\phi \in {\rm Mod}(\Sigma)$.

Rigidity Results for large displacement quotients of mapping class groups

Abstract:We consider quotients of mapping class groups of orientable, finite type surfaces by subgroups whose action on the curve graph has large displacement. This class includes quotients by the normal closure of a pseudo-Anosov element, the mapping class group itself, and in view of forthcoming work of Abbott, Berlyne, Ng, and Rasmussen, also random quotients. First, we show that every automorphism of the corresponding quotient of the curve graph is induced by a mapping class, thus generalising Ivanov's Theorem about automorphisms of the curve graph. Then we use this to prove quasi-isometric rigidity under additional assumptions, satisfied by all aforementioned quotients. In the process, we clarify a proof of quasi-isometric rigidity of mapping class groups by Behrstock, Hagen, and Sisto. Finally, we show that the outer automorphisms groups of our quotients, as well as their abstract commensurators, are "the smallest possible".

Abstract:In this note we show that many subgroups of mapping class groups of infinite-type surfaces without boundary have trivial centers, including all normal subgroups. Using similar techniques, we show that every nontrivial normal subgroup of a big mapping class group contains a nonabelian free group. In contrast, we show that no big mapping class group satisfies the strong Tits alternative enjoyed by finite-type mapping class groups. We also give examples of big mapping class groups that fail to satisfy even the classical Tits alternative and give a proof that every countable group appears as a subgroup of some big mapping class group.

Abstract:We completely classify the orientable infinite-type surfaces $S$ such that $\operatorname{PMap}(S)$, the pure mapping class group, has automatic continuity. This classification includes surfaces with noncompact boundary. In the case of surfaces with finitely many ends and no noncompact boundary components, we prove the mapping class group $\operatorname{Map}(S)$ does not have automatic continuity. We also completely classify the surfaces such that $\overline{\operatorname{PMap}_c(S)}$, the subgroup of the pure mapping class group composed of elements with representatives that can be approximated by compactly supported homeomorphisms, has automatic continuity. In some cases when $\overline{\operatorname{PMap}_c(S)}$ has automatic continuity, we show any homomorphism from $\overline{\operatorname{PMap}_c(S)}$ to a countable group is trivial.

Twisted Rokhlin property for mapping class groups

Abstract:In this paper, generalising the idea of the Rokhlin property, we explore the concept of the twisted Rokhlin property of topological groups. A topological group is said to exhibit the twisted Rokhlin property if, for each automorphism $\phi$ of the group, there exists a $\phi$-twisted conjugacy class that is dense in the group. We provide a complete classification of connected orientable infinite-type surfaces without boundaries whose mapping class groups possess the twisted Rokhlin property. Additionally, we prove that the mapping class groups of the remaining surfaces do not admit any dense $\phi$-twisted conjugacy class for any automorphism $\phi$. This supplements the recent work of Lanier and Vlamis on the Rokhlin property of big mapping class groups. We also prove that the mapping class group of each connected orientable infinite-type surface without boundary possesses the $R_\infty$-property.
