Abstract:It is proved that the mapping class group of any closed surface with finitely many marked points is quasiisometric to a CAT(0) cube complex. We provide two distinct proofs, one tailored to mapping class groups, and one applying to a larger class of groups.

Abstract:In this article we study the asymptotically rigid mapping class groups of infinitely-punctured surfaces obtained by thickening planar trees. We present a family of CAT(0) cube complexes on which the latter groups act. Along the way, we determine in which cases the cube complexes introduced earlier by Genvois, Lonjou and Urech are CAT(0).

Abstract:In this paper, we give presentations of the mapping class groups of marked surfaces stabilizing boundaries for any genus. Note that in the existing works, the mapping class groups of marked surfaces were the isotopy classes of homeomorphisms fixing boundaries pointwise. The condition for stabilizing boundaries of mapping class groups makes the requirement for mapping class groups to fix boundaries pointwise to be unnecessary. As an application of presentations of the mapping class groups of marked surfaces stabilizing boundaries, we obtain the presentation of the cluster automorphism group of a cluster algebra from a feasible surface ( S, M ). Lastly, for the case (1) 4-punctured sphere, the cluster automorphism group of a cluster algebra from the surface is characterized. Since cluster automorphism groups of cluster algebras from those surfaces were given in [1] in the cases (2) the once-punctured 4-gon and (3) the twice-punctured digon, we indeed give presentations of cluster automorphism groups of cluster algebras from surfaces which are not feasible. Big mapping class groups are not extremely amenable

Abstract:This paper uses the renowned Kechris-Pestov-Todorčević machinery to show that (big) mapping class groups are not extremely amenable unless the underlying surface is a sphere or a once-punctured sphere, or equivalently when the mapping class group is trivial. The same techniques also show that the pure mapping class groups, as well as compactly supported mapping class groups, of a surface with genus at least one can never be extremely amenable.

Abstract:Let $$1 \to H \to G \to Q \to 1$$ be an exact sequence where $H= \pi_1(S)$ is the fundamental group of a closed surface $S$ of genus greater than one, $G$ is hyperbolic and $Q$ is finitely generated free. The aim of this paper is to provide sufficient conditions to prove that $G$ is cubulable and construct examples satisfying these conditions. The main result may be thought of as a combination theorem for virtually special hyperbolic groups when the amalgamating subgroup is not quasiconvex. Ingredients include the theory of tracks, the quasiconvex hierarchy theorem of Wise, the distance estimates in the mapping class group from subsurface projections due to Masur-Minsky and the model geometry for doubly degenerate Kleinian surface groups used in the proof of the ending lamination theorem. An appendix to this paper by Manning, Mj, and Sageev proves a reduction theorem by showing that cubulability of $G$ follows from the existence of an essential incompressible quasiconvex track in a surface bundle over a graph with fundamental group $G$.

Abstract:We show that the {\it full} mapping class group of any orientable closed surface with punctures admits a cocompact classifying space for proper actions of dimension equal to its virtual cohomological dimension. This was proved for closed orientable surfaces and for {\it pure} mapping class groups by Aramayona and Martínez Pérez. As a consequence of our result we also obtain the proper geometric dimension of {\it full} spherical braid groups.

Abstract:Given any connected compact orientable surface, a pair of mapping classes is said to be procongruently conjugate if it induces a conjugate pair of outer automophisms on the profinite completion of the fundamental group of the surface. For example, this occurs if they induce conjugate outer automorphisms on every characteristic finite quotient of the fundamental group. In this paper, it is shown that every procongruent conjugacy class of mapping classes, as a subset of the surface mapping class group, is the disjoint union of at most finitely many conjugacy classes of mapping classes. For any pseudo-Anosov mapping class of a connected closed orientable surface, several topological features are confirmed to depend only on the procongurent conjugacy class of the mapping class, including the stretching factor, the topological type of the prong singularities, the transverse orientability of the invariant foliations, and the isomorphism type of the symplectic Floer homology.

Abstract:Given a compact orientable surface, the mapping class group is shown to have a presentation so that the generators are the set of all Dehn twists and the relations are supported in subsurfaces homeomorphic to the one-holed torus or the four-holed sphere. It turns out that all the relations were discovered by Dehn in 1938.

Abstract:We prove that many normal subgroups of the extended mapping class group of a surface with punctures are geometric, that is, that their automorphism groups and abstract commensurator groups are isomorphic to the extended mapping class group. In order to apply our theorem to a normal subgroup we require that the "minimal supports" of its elements satisfy a certain complexity condition that is easy to check in practice. The key ingredient is proving that the automorphism groups of many simplicial complexes associated to punctured surfaces are isomorphic to the extended mapping class group. This resolves many cases of a metaconjecture of N. V. Ivanov and extends work of Brendle-Margalit, who prove the result for surfaces without punctures.

Abstract:We classify homomorphisms from mapping class groups by using arguments involving finite subgroups. First, we give a new proof of a result of Aramayona–Souto that all homomorphisms between certain mapping class groups of closed surfaces are trivial. Second, we show that only finitely many mapping class groups of closed surfaces have nontrivial homomorphisms to for any n , where is the n -sphere. We also effectivize this result for small values of n ; for instance, we prove that every homomorphism from to or is trivial if , extending a result of Franks–Handel.

Abstract:We define orbifold mapping class groups (with marked points) and study them using their action on certain orbifold analogs of arcs and simple closed curves. Moreover, we establish a Birman exact sequence for suitable subgroups of orbifold mapping class groups. The short exact sequence allows us to deduce finite presentations of these groups. This is the basis for a similar discussion of orbifold braid groups in [6].

Abstract:We study the action of the mapping class group on the subspace of de Rham classes in the degree-two bounded cohomology of a hyperbolic surface. In particular, we show that the only fixed nontrivial finite-dimensional subspace is the one generated by the Euler class. As a consequence, we get that the action of the mapping class group on the space of de Rham quasimorphisms has no fixed points.

Abstract:A normal subgroup of the (extended) mapping class group of a surface is said to be geometric if its automorphism group is the mapping class group. We prove that in the case of the Cantor tree surface, every normal subgroup is geometric. We note that there is no non-trivial finite-type mapping class group for which this statement is true. We study a generalisation of the curve graph, proving that its automorphism group is again the mapping class group. This strategy is adapted from that of Brendle-Margalit and the author for certain normal subgroups in the finite-type setting.

Abstract:It has been known since the time of Nielsen that the mapping class group $\text{Mod}_{g,1}$ of a surface of genus $g$ and one puncture acts faithfully by homeomorphisms on the circle. In this note, we show that this standard representation of the mapping class group is not rigid, precisely, if $G<\text{Mod}_{g,1}$ is a finite index subgroup then there exist infinitely many non--conjugate faithful representations $G\to \text{Homeo}^+(S^1)$. We thus answer a question of B. Farb.

Finding and Combining Indicable Subgroups of Big Mapping Class Groups

Abstract:We explicitly construct new subgroups of the mapping class groups of an uncountable collection of infinite-type surfaces, including, but not limited to, right-angled Artin groups, free groups, Baumslag-Solitar groups, mapping class groups of other surfaces, and a large collection of wreath products. For each such subgroup $H$ and surface $S$, we show that there are countably many non-conjugate embeddings of $H$ into $\text{Map}(S)$; in certain cases, there are uncountably many such embeddings. The images of each of these embeddings cannot lie in the isometry group of $S$ for any hyperbolic metric and are not contained in the closure of the compactly supported subgroup of $\text{Map}(S)$. In this sense, our construction is new and does not rely on previously known techniques for constructing subgroups of mapping class groups. Notably, our embeddings of $\text{Map}(S')$ into $\text{Map}(S)$ are not induced by embeddings of $S'$ into $S$. Our main tool for all of these constructions is the utilization of special homeomorphisms of $S$ called shift maps, and more generally, multipush maps.

Rigidity Results for large displacement quotients of mapping class groups

Abstract:We consider quotients of mapping class groups of orientable, finite type surfaces by subgroups whose action on the curve graph has large displacement. This class includes quotients by the normal closure of a pseudo-Anosov element, the mapping class group itself, and in view of forthcoming work of Abbott, Berlyne, Ng, and Rasmussen, also random quotients. First, we show that every automorphism of the corresponding quotient of the curve graph is induced by a mapping class, thus generalising Ivanov's Theorem about automorphisms of the curve graph. Then we use this to prove quasi-isometric rigidity under additional assumptions, satisfied by all aforementioned quotients. In the process, we clarify a proof of quasi-isometric rigidity of mapping class groups by Behrstock, Hagen, and Sisto. Finally, we show that the outer automorphisms groups of our quotients, as well as their abstract commensurators, are "the smallest possible".
