Abstract:We show that the {\it full} mapping class group of any orientable closed surface with punctures admits a cocompact classifying space for proper actions of dimension equal to its virtual cohomological dimension. This was proved for closed orientable surfaces and for {\it pure} mapping class groups by Aramayona and Martínez Pérez. As a consequence of our result we also obtain the proper geometric dimension of {\it full} spherical braid groups.

Abstract:We study the action of the mapping class group on the subspace of de Rham classes in the degree-two bounded cohomology of a hyperbolic surface. In particular, we show that the only fixed nontrivial finite-dimensional subspace is the one generated by the Euler class. As a consequence, we get that the action of the mapping class group on the space of de Rham quasimorphisms has no fixed points.

Abstract:We first introduce an invariant index for G-equivariant elliptic differential operators on a locally compact manifold M admitting a proper cocompact action of a locally compact group G. It generalizes the Kawasaki index for orbifolds to the case of proper cocompact actions. Our invariant index is used to show that an analog of the Guillemin–Sternberg geometric quantization conjecture holds if M is symplectic with a Hamiltonian action of G that is proper and cocompact. This essentially solves a conjecture of Hochs and Landsman.

Abstract:In this paper, we show that the mapping class group of a closed surface can not be geometrically realized as a group of homeomorphisms of that surface. More precisely, let $Pr:\mathcal{H}\textit{omeo}(M)\to\mathcal{M}\mathcal{C}(M)$ denote the standard projection of the group of homeomorphisms to the mapping class group of a closed surface M of genus g>5. Abstract:Let M be a surface (possibly nonorientable) with punctures and/or boundary components. The paper is a study of ``geometric subgroups'' of the mapping class group of M, that is subgroups corresponding to inclusions of subsurfaces (possibly disconnected). We characterise the subsurfaces which lead to virtually abelian geometric subgroups. We provide algebraic and geometric conditions under which two geometric subgroups are commensurable. We also describe the commensurator of a geometric subgroup in terms of the stabiliser of the underlying subsurface. Finally, we show some applications of our analysis to the theory of irreducible unitary representations of mapping class groups.

Abstract:By studying commensurators of virtually cyclic groups, we prove that every elementary amenable group of finite Hirsch length h and cardinality aleph-n admits a finite dimensional classifying space with virtually cyclic stabilizers of dimension n+h+2. We also provide a criterion for groups that fit into an extension with torsion-free quotient to admit a finite dimensional classifying space with virtually cyclic stabilizers. Finally, we exhibit examples of integral linear groups of type F whose geometric dimension for the family of virtually cyclic subgroups is finite but arbitrarily larger than the geometric dimension for proper actions. This answers a question posed by W. Lueck.
