Abstract:Let S = S(n) denote the infinite surface with n ends, n \in N, accumulated by genus. For n \geq 6, we show that the mapping class group of S is topologically generated by five involutions. When n \geq 3, it is topologically generated by six involutions.

Abstract:We investigate the problem of when big mapping class groups are generated by involutions. Restricting our attention to the class of self-similar surfaces, which are surfaces with self-similar ends space, as defined by Mann and Rafi, and with 0 or infinite genus, we show that, when the set of maximal ends is infinite, then the mapping class groups of these surfaces are generated by involutions, normally generated by a single involution, and uniformly perfect. In fact, we derive this statement as a corollary of the corresponding statement for the homeomorphism groups of these surfaces. On the other hand, among self-similar surfaces with one maximal end, we produce infinitely many examples in which their big mapping class groups are neither perfect nor generated by torsion elements. These groups also do not have the automatic continuity property.

Abstract:We prove that the mapping class group of a closed connected orientable surface of genus $g$ is generated by two elements of order $g$ for $g\geq 6$. Moreover, for $g\geq 7$ we found a generating set of two elements, of order $g$ and $g'$ which is the least divisor of $g$ such that $g'>2$. Furthermore, we proved that it is generated by two elements of order $g/\gcd (g,k)$ for $g\geq 3k^2+4k+1$ and any positive integer $k$.

Abstract:We study torsion generators for the (extended) mapping class group or the extended mapping class group of a closed connected orientable surface of genus g. We show that for every g is grater than or equal to 14, mapping class group can be generated by two torsion elements of order g+1 if g is even, and of orders g+1 and g+1 if g is odd. Also for g grater than or equal to 16, mapping class group can be generated by two torsion elements of orders g+1 if g+1 is not divisible by 3, and of orders g+1 and g+1 if g+1 is divisible by 3. Similarly, we obtain two torsion elements generating extended mapping class groups.

On generating mapping class groups by pseudo-Anosov elements

Abstract:Wajnryb proved that the mapping class group of a closed oriented surface is generated by two elements. We proved that the mapping class group is generated by two pseudo-Anosov elements. In particular, if the genus is greater than or equal to nine, we can take the generators to two conjugate pseudo-Anosov elements with arbitrarily large dilatations. Another result we prove is that the mapping class group is generated by two conjugate reducible but not periodic elements if the genus is greater than or equal to eight. We also give similar results to the first and third results for the hyperelliptic mapping class group when the genus is greater than or equal to one.

Abstract:The mapping class group ${\Gamma}_g^ 1$ of a closed orientable surface of genus $g \geq 1$ with one marked point can be identified, by the Nielsen action, with a subgroup of the group of orientation preserving homeomorphims of the circle. This inclusion pulls back the powers of the discrete universal Euler class producing classes $\text{E}^n \in H^{2n}({\Gamma}_g^1;\mathbb{Z})$ for all $n\geq 1$. In this paper we study the power $n=g,$ and prove: $\text{E}^g$ is a torsion class which generates a cyclic subgroup of $H^{2g}({\Gamma}_g^1;\mathbb{Z})$ whose order is a positive integer multiple of $4g(2g+1)(2g-1)$.

Abstract:Let $T_{g,n}$ be a compact orientable topological surface of genus $g$ with $n$ marked points and let $M(g,n)$ denote its mapping class group. We study the action on the fundamental group of the surface induced by the self-homeomorphisms of the mapping class group by describing completely the case of positive genus. In order to do so, we use a presentation for the mapping class group with generators the Humphries generators and compute their images as elements of the outer automorphism group of the fundamental group, since the action is defined only up to conjugation.

Abstract:A topological group $G$ is topologically normally generated if there is $g \in G$ such that the normal closure of $g$ is dense in $G$. Suppose $S$ is a tame, infinite type surface whose $\mathrm{Map}(S)$ is CB generated. We prove that if the end space of $S$ is countable, then $\mathrm{Map}(S)$ is topologically normally generated if and only if $S$ is uniquely self-similar. Moreover, if the end space of $S$ is uncountable, we give a sufficient condition for $S$ that $\mathrm{Map}(S)$ is topologically normally generated. As a result, we provide uncountably many examples, each of which is not telescoping and $\mathrm{Map}(S)$ is topologically normally generated. We also proved the semidirect product structure of $\mathrm{FMap}(S)$, which is a subgroup of $\mathrm{Map}(S)$ that fixes all isolated maximal ends pointwise. Finally we show that the minimum number of normal generators of $\mathrm{Map}(S)$ is bounded both below and above by constants, which both depending only on the topology of $S$. The upper bound grows quadratically with respect to the constant.

Abstract:The extended mapping class group of a surface $\Sigma$ is defined to be the group of isotopy classes of (not necessarily orientation-preserving) homeomorphisms of $\Sigma$. We are able to show that the extended mapping class group of an $n$-punctured sphere is generated by two elements of finite order exactly when $n\not=4$. We use this result to prove that the extended mapping class group of a genus 2 surface is generated by two elements of finite order.

Abstract:This paper uses the renowned Kechris-Pestov-Todorčević machinery to show that (big) mapping class groups are not extremely amenable unless the underlying surface is a sphere or a once-punctured sphere, or equivalently when the mapping class group is trivial. The same techniques also show that the pure mapping class groups, as well as compactly supported mapping class groups, of a surface with genus at least one can never be extremely amenable.

Abstract:Let $\mathrm{Mod}(S_g)$ be the mapping class group of the closed orientable surface of genus $g \geq 1$, and let $\mathrm{LMod}_{p}(X)$ be the liftable mapping class group associated with a finite-sheeted branched cover $p:S \to X$, where $X$ is a hyperbolic surface. For $k \geq 2$, let $p_k: S_{k(g-1)+1} \to S_g$ be the standard $k$-sheeted regular cyclic cover. In this paper, we show that $\{\mathrm{LMod}_{p_k}(S_g)\}_{k \geq 2}$ forms an infinite family of self-normalizing subgroups in $\mathrm{Mod}(S_g)$, which are also maximal when $k$ is prime. Furthermore, we derive explicit finite generating sets for $\mathrm{LMod}_{p_k}(S_g)$ for $g \geq 3$ and $k \geq 2$, and $\mathrm{LMod}_{p_2}(S_2)$. For $g \geq 2$, as an application of our main result, we also derive a generating set for $\mathrm{LMod}_{p_2}(S_g) \cap C_{\mathrm{Mod}(S_g)}(\iota)$, where $C_{\mathrm{Mod}(S_g)}(\iota)$ is the centralizer of the hyperelliptic involution $\iota \in \mathrm{Mod}(S_g)$. Let $\mathcal{L}$ be the infinite ladder surface, and let $q_g : \mathcal{L} \to S_g$ be the standard infinite-sheeted cover induced by $\langle h^{g-1} \rangle$ where $h$ is the standard handle shift on $\mathcal{L}$. As a final application, we derive a finite generating set for $\mathrm{LMod}_{q_g}(S_g)$ for $g \geq 3$.

Abstract:For $g\geq 2$, let $\mathrm{Mod}(S_g)$ be the mapping class group of the closed orientable surface $S_g$ of genus $g$. In this paper, we obtain necessary and sufficient conditions under which a given pseudo-periodic mapping class can be a root of another up to conjugacy. Using this characterization, the canonical decomposition of (non-periodic) mapping classes, and some known algorithms, we give an algorithm for determining the conjugacy classes of roots of arbitrary mapping classes. Furthermore, we derive realizable bounds on the degrees of roots of pseudo-periodic mapping classes in $\mathrm{Mod}(S_g)$, the Torelli group, the level-$m$ subgroup of $\mathrm{Mod}(S_g)$, and the commutator subgroup of $\mathrm{Mod}(S_2)$. In particular, we show that the highest possible (realizable) degree of a root of a pseudo-periodic mapping class $F$ is $3q(F)(g+1)(g+2)$, where $q(F)$ is a unique positive integer associated with the conjugacy class of $F$. Moreover, this bound is realized by a root of a power of a Dehn twist about a separating curve of genus $[g/2]$ in $S_g$, where $g\equiv 0,9 \pmod{12}$. Finally, for $g\geq 3$, we show that any pseudo-periodic mapping class having a nontrivial periodic component that is not the hyperelliptic involution, normally generates $\mathrm{Mod}(S_g)$. Consequently, we establish that $\mathrm{Mod}(S_g)$ is normally generated by a root of bounding pair map or a root of a nontrivial power of a Dehn twist.

Abstract:The balanced superelliptic mapping class group is the normalizer of the transformation group of the balanced superelliptic covering in the mapping class group of the total surface. We prove that the balanced superelliptic mapping class groups with either one marked point, one boundary component, or no marked points and boundary are generated by three elements. To prove this, we also show that its liftable mapping class groups are also generated by three elements. These generating sets are minimal except for several cases of closed surfaces.

Abstract:Let $S$ and $S'$ be orientable finite-type surfaces of genus $g\geq 4$ and $g'$, respectively. We prove that every multitwist-preserving map between pure mapping class groups $\text{PMap}(S)\to \text{PMap}(S')$ is induced by a multi-embedding. As an application, we classify all homomorphisms $\text{PMap}(S)\to \text{PMap}(S')$ for $g\geq 4$ and $g' \leq 6\cdot 2^{g-4}$.

Finding and Combining Indicable Subgroups of Big Mapping Class Groups

Abstract:We explicitly construct new subgroups of the mapping class groups of an uncountable collection of infinite-type surfaces, including, but not limited to, right-angled Artin groups, free groups, Baumslag-Solitar groups, mapping class groups of other surfaces, and a large collection of wreath products. For each such subgroup $H$ and surface $S$, we show that there are countably many non-conjugate embeddings of $H$ into $\text{Map}(S)$; in certain cases, there are uncountably many such embeddings. The images of each of these embeddings cannot lie in the isometry group of $S$ for any hyperbolic metric and are not contained in the closure of the compactly supported subgroup of $\text{Map}(S)$. In this sense, our construction is new and does not rely on previously known techniques for constructing subgroups of mapping class groups. Notably, our embeddings of $\text{Map}(S')$ into $\text{Map}(S)$ are not induced by embeddings of $S'$ into $S$. Our main tool for all of these constructions is the utilization of special homeomorphisms of $S$ called shift maps, and more generally, multipush maps.

Abstract:In this paper we compute the mapping class group of closed simply-connected 6-manifolds $M$ which look like complete intersections, i.~e.~ $H_2(M;\mathbb Z) \cong \mathbb Z $ and $x^3 \ne 0$ where $x \in H^2(M; \mathbb Z)$ is a generator. We determine some algebraic properties of the mapping class group; for example we compute its abelianization and its center. We show that modulo the center the mapping class group is residually finite and virtually torsion-free. We also study low dimensional homology groups. The results are very similar to the computation of the mapping class group of Riemann surfaces. We give generators of the mapping class group, and generators and relations for the subgroup acting trivially on $\pi_{3}(M)$.

We show that the torsion elements generate the mapping class group if and only if $(g, r) \neq (2, 5k+4)$ for some integer $k$.
