Abstract:Omori and the author have given an infinite presentation for the mapping class group of a compact non-orientable surface. In this paper, we give more simple infinite presentations for this group.

Abstract:Given a compact orientable surface, the mapping class group is shown to have a presentation so that the generators are the set of all Dehn twists and the relations are supported in subsurfaces homeomorphic to the one-holed torus or the four-holed sphere. It turns out that all the relations were discovered by Dehn in 1938.

Abstract:In this paper, we give presentations of the mapping class groups of marked surfaces stabilizing boundaries for any genus. Note that in the existing works, the mapping class groups of marked surfaces were the isotopy classes of homeomorphisms fixing boundaries pointwise. The condition for stabilizing boundaries of mapping class groups makes the requirement for mapping class groups to fix boundaries pointwise to be unnecessary. As an application of presentations of the mapping class groups of marked surfaces stabilizing boundaries, we obtain the presentation of the cluster automorphism group of a cluster algebra from a feasible surface ( S, M ). Lastly, for the case (1) 4-punctured sphere, the cluster automorphism group of a cluster algebra from the surface is characterized. Since cluster automorphism groups of cluster algebras from those surfaces were given in [1] in the cases (2) the once-punctured 4-gon and (3) the twice-punctured digon, we indeed give presentations of cluster automorphism groups of cluster algebras from surfaces which are not feasible. Abstract:We completely classify the orientable infinite-type surfaces $S$ such that $\operatorname{PMap}(S)$, the pure mapping class group, has automatic continuity. This classification includes surfaces with noncompact boundary. In the case of surfaces with finitely many ends and no noncompact boundary components, we prove the mapping class group $\operatorname{Map}(S)$ does not have automatic continuity. We also completely classify the surfaces such that $\overline{\operatorname{PMap}_c(S)}$, the subgroup of the pure mapping class group composed of elements with representatives that can be approximated by compactly supported homeomorphisms, has automatic continuity. In some cases when $\overline{\operatorname{PMap}_c(S)}$ has automatic continuity, we show any homomorphism from $\overline{\operatorname{PMap}_c(S)}$ to a countable group is trivial.

Abstract:Let $T_{g,n}$ be a compact orientable topological surface of genus $g$ with $n$ marked points and let $M(g,n)$ denote its mapping class group. We study the action on the fundamental group of the surface induced by the self-homeomorphisms of the mapping class group by describing completely the case of positive genus. In order to do so, we use a presentation for the mapping class group with generators the Humphries generators and compute their images as elements of the outer automorphism group of the fundamental group, since the action is defined only up to conjugation.

Abstract:We explicitly construct new subgroups of the mapping class groups of an uncountable collection of infinite-type surfaces, including, but not limited to, right-angled Artin groups, free groups, Baumslag-Solitar groups, mapping class groups of other surfaces, and a large collection of wreath products. For each such subgroup $H$ and surface $S$, we show that there are countably many non-conjugate embeddings of $H$ into $\text{Map}(S)$; in certain cases, there are uncountably many such embeddings. The images of each of these embeddings cannot lie in the isometry group of $S$ for any hyperbolic metric and are not contained in the closure of the compactly supported subgroup of $\text{Map}(S)$. In this sense, our construction is new and does not rely on previously known techniques for constructing subgroups of mapping class groups. Notably, our embeddings of $\text{Map}(S')$ into $\text{Map}(S)$ are not induced by embeddings of $S'$ into $S$. Our main tool for all of these constructions is the utilization of special homeomorphisms of $S$ called shift maps, and more generally, multipush maps.

Abstract:We classify homomorphisms from mapping class groups by using arguments involving finite subgroups. First, we give a new proof of a result of Aramayona–Souto that all homomorphisms between certain mapping class groups of closed surfaces are trivial. Second, we show that only finitely many mapping class groups of closed surfaces have nontrivial homomorphisms to for any n , where is the n -sphere. We also effectivize this result for small values of n ; for instance, we prove that every homomorphism from to or is trivial if , extending a result of Franks–Handel.

Abstract:We introduce a semi-algebraic structure on the set  of all isotopy classes of non-separating simple closed curves in any compact oriented surface and show that the structure is finitely generated. As a consequence, we produce a natural finite dimensional linear representation of the mapping class group of the surface. Applications to the Teichmüller space, Thurston's measured lamination space, the harmonic Beltrami differentials, and the first cohomology groups of the surface are discussed.

Abstract:We define orbifold mapping class groups (with marked points) and study them using their action on certain orbifold analogs of arcs and simple closed curves. Moreover, we establish a Birman exact sequence for suitable subgroups of orbifold mapping class groups. The short exact sequence allows us to deduce finite presentations of these groups. This is the basis for a similar discussion of orbifold braid groups in [6].

Abstract:An infinite-type surface $\Sigma$ is of type $\mathcal{S}$ if it has an isolated puncture $p$ and admits shift maps. This includes all infinite-type surfaces with an isolated puncture outside of two sporadic classes. Given such a surface, we construct an infinite family of intrinsically infinite-type mapping classes that act loxodromically on the relative arc graph $\mathcal{A}(\Sigma, p)$. J. Bavard produced such an element for the plane minus a Cantor set, and our result gives the first examples of such mapping classes for all other surfaces of type $\mathcal{S}$. The elements we construct are the composition of three shift maps on $\Sigma$, and we give an alternate characterization of these elements as a composition of a pseudo-Anosov on a finite-type subsurface of $\Sigma$ and a standard shift map. We then explicitly find their limit points on the boundary of $\mathcal{A}(\Sigma,p)$ and their limiting geodesic laminations. Finally, we show that these infinite-type elements can be used to prove that Map$(\Sigma,p)$ has an infinite-dimensional space of quasimorphisms.
Mapping Class Groups of Simply Connected Kähler Manifolds

Abstract:This paper has 3 principal goals: (1) to survey what is know about mapping class and Torelli groups of simply connected compact Kaehler manifolds, (2) supplement these results, and (3) present a list of questions and open problems to stimulate future work. Apart from reviewing general background, the paper focuses on the case of hypersurfaces in projective space. We explain how older results of Carlson--Toledo <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="alg-geom/9708002" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/alg-geom/9708002">arXiv:alg-geom/9708002</a> and recent results of Kreck--Su <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2009.08054" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2009.08054">arXiv:2009.08054</a> imply that the homomorphism from the fundamental group of the moduli space of hypersurfaces in P^4 to the mapping class group of the underlying manifold has a very large kernel (contains a free group of rank 2) and has image of infinite index. This is in contrast to the case of curves, where the homomorphism is an isomorphism.
