Abstract:Given a compact orientable surface, the mapping class group is shown to have a presentation so that the generators are the set of all Dehn twists and the relations are supported in subsurfaces homeomorphic to the one-holed torus or the four-holed sphere. It turns out that all the relations were discovered by Dehn in 1938.

Abstract:We study projective structures on a surface having poles of prescribed orders. We obtain a monodromy map from a complex manifold parameterising such structures to the stack of framed $\mathrm{PGL}_2(\mathbb{C})$ local systems on the associated marked bordered surface. We prove that the image of this map is contained in the union of the domains of the cluster charts. We discuss a number of open questions concerning this monodromy map.

Abstract:Abstract The non-hyperelliptic connected components of the strata of translation surfaces are conjectured to be orbifold classifying spaces for some groups commensurable to some mapping class groups. The topological monodromy map of the non-hyperelliptic components projects naturally to the mapping class group of the underlying punctured surface and is an obvious candidate to test commensurability. In the present article, we prove that for the components $\mathcal {H}(3,1)$ and $\mathcal {H}^{nh}(4)$ in genus 3 the monodromy map fails to demonstrate the conjectured commensurability. In particular, building on the work of Wajnryb, we prove that the kernels of the monodromy maps for $\mathcal {H}(3,1)$ and $\mathcal {H}^{nh}(4)$ are large, as they contain a non-abelian free group of rank $2$.

Abstract:We study irreducible surfaces of degree d in $\mathbb{P}^3$ that contain a line of multiplicity d-1 (monoidal surfaces) or d-2 (submonoidal surfaces). We relate them to congruences of lines and Cremona transformations. Many of our results are not new and can be found in the classical literature, we give them modern proofs. In the last section, we extend some of our results to hypersurfaces of arbitrary dimension. We define two commuting Cremona involutions in the ambient space associated to a linear subspace of multiplicity d-2 contained in the hypersurface. Both leave the hypersurface invariant, but one acts as the identity on the hypersurface.

Monodromy in the space of symmetric cubic surfaces with a line

Abstract:We explore the enumerative problem of finding lines on cubic surfaces defined by symmetric polynomials. We prove that the moduli space of symmetric cubic surfaces is an arithmetic quotient of the complex hyperbolic line, and determine constraints on the monodromy group of lines on symmetric cubic surfaces arising from Hodge theory and geometry of the associated cover. This interestingly fails to pin down the entire Galois group. Leveraging computations in equivariant line geometry and homotopy continuation, we prove that the Galois group is the Klein 4-group. This is the first computation in what promises to be an interesting direction of research: studying monodromy in classical enumerative problems restricted by a finite group of symmetries.

Mapping Class Groups of Simply Connected Kähler Manifolds

Abstract:This paper has 3 principal goals: (1) to survey what is know about mapping class and Torelli groups of simply connected compact Kaehler manifolds, (2) supplement these results, and (3) present a list of questions and open problems to stimulate future work. Apart from reviewing general background, the paper focuses on the case of hypersurfaces in projective space. We explain how older results of Carlson--Toledo <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="alg-geom/9708002" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/alg-geom/9708002">arXiv:alg-geom/9708002</a> and recent results of Kreck--Su <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2009.08054" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2009.08054">arXiv:2009.08054</a> imply that the homomorphism from the fundamental group of the moduli space of hypersurfaces in P^4 to the mapping class group of the underlying manifold has a very large kernel (contains a free group of rank 2) and has image of infinite index. This is in contrast to the case of curves, where the homomorphism is an isomorphism.

Abstract:We classify, up to few exceptions, the orbit closures of the Mod(Σ)$${\mathrm {Mod}}(\Sigma )$$-action on the affine character variety χ(Aff(C))$$\chi ( \mathrm {Aff}({\mathbb {C}}))$$. We obtain from this classification that the only obstruction for a non-abelian representation ρ:π1Σ⟶Aff(C)$$\rho : \pi _1 \Sigma \longrightarrow \mathrm {Aff}({\mathbb {C}})$$ to be the holonomy of a branched affine structure on Σ$$\Sigma $$ is to be Euclidean and not to have positive volume, where Σ$$\Sigma $$ is a closed oriented surface of genus g≥2$$g \ge 2$$.

Abstract:For a punctured surface $S$, we characterize the representations of its fundamental group into $\mathrm{PSL}_2 (\mathbb{C})$ that arise as the monodromy of a meromorphic projective structure on $S$ with poles of order at most two and no apparent singularities. This proves the analogue of a theorem of Gallo-Kapovich-Marden concerning $\mathbb{C}\mathrm{P}^1$-structures on closed surfaces, and settles a long-standing question about characterizing monodromy groups for the Schwarzian equation on punctured spheres. The proof involves a geometric interpretation of the Fock-Goncharov coordinates of the moduli space of framed $\mathrm{PSL}_2 (\mathbb{C})$-representations, following ideas of Thurston and some recent results of Allegretti-Bridgeland.

There is the tautological family of plane curves defined over , which has an associated monodromy representation into the mapping class group of the fiber. For , classical algebraic geometry implies the surjectivity of . For , the existence of a root of the canonical bundle implies that cannot be surjective. The main result of this paper is that for , the image of is as large as possible, subject to this constraint. This requires combining the algebro-geometric work of Lönne with Johnson's theory of the Torelli subgroup of .

Abstract:In this paper, we give presentations of the mapping class groups of marked surfaces stabilizing boundaries for any genus. Note that in the existing works, the mapping class groups of marked surfaces were the isotopy classes of homeomorphisms fixing boundaries pointwise. The condition for stabilizing boundaries of mapping class groups makes the requirement for mapping class groups to fix boundaries pointwise to be unnecessary. As an application of presentations of the mapping class groups of marked surfaces stabilizing boundaries, we obtain the presentation of the cluster automorphism group of a cluster algebra from a feasible surface ( S, M ). Lastly, for the case (1) 4-punctured sphere, the cluster automorphism group of a cluster algebra from the surface is characterized. Since cluster automorphism groups of cluster algebras from those surfaces were given in [1] in the cases (2) the once-punctured 4-gon and (3) the twice-punctured digon, we indeed give presentations of cluster automorphism groups of cluster algebras from surfaces which are not feasible. Mapping class group of manifolds which look like $3$-dimensional complete intersections

Abstract:In this paper we compute the mapping class group of closed simply-connected 6-manifolds $M$ which look like complete intersections, i.~e.~ $H_2(M;\mathbb Z) \cong \mathbb Z $ and $x^3 \ne 0$ where $x \in H^2(M; \mathbb Z)$ is a generator. We determine some algebraic properties of the mapping class group; for example we compute its abelianization and its center. We show that modulo the center the mapping class group is residually finite and virtually torsion-free. We also study low dimensional homology groups. The results are very similar to the computation of the mapping class group of Riemann surfaces. We give generators of the mapping class group, and generators and relations for the subgroup acting trivially on $\pi_{3}(M)$.

Abstract:We survey some recent developments at the interface of algebraic geometry, surface topology, and the theory of ordinary differential equations. Motivated by "non-abelian" analogues of standard conjectures on the cohomology of algebraic varieties, we study mapping class group actions on character varieties and their algebro-geometric avatar -- isomonodromy differential equations -- from the point of view of both complex and arithmetic geometry. We then collect some open questions and conjectures on these topics. These notes are an extended version of my talk at the April 2024 Current Developments in Mathematics conference at Harvard.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a connected reductive affine algebraic group defined over $\mathbb C$ and $\mathfrak g$ its Lie algebra. We study the monodromy map from the space of $\mathfrak g$-differential systems on a compact connected Riemann surface $\Sigma$ of genus $g \,\geq\, 2$ to the character variety of $G$-representations of the fundamental group of $\Sigma$. If the complex dimension of $G$ is at least three, we show that the monodromy map is an immersion at the generic point.

Abstract:Assuming that every hyperbolic group is residually finite, we prove the congruence subgroup property for mapping class groups of hyperbolic surfaces of finite type. Under the same assumption, it follows that profinitely equivalent hyperbolic 3-manifolds are commensurable.

Abstract:Let X be a complex submanifold of projective space. Schnell showed that the middle-dimensional primitive cohomology of X is generated by tube classes, which arise from the monodromy of the vanishing homology on hyperplane sections. Clemens asks if the theorem is still true when we restrict the generating set to the tube classes over the class of a single vanishing sphere of nodal degeneration. We prove this is true for hypersurfaces in CP^4. The proof is based on the degeneration of a hypersurface to the union of hypersurfaces of lower degrees.
