Abstract:We develop a steady-state analytical and numerical model of the optical response of power-recycled Fabry-Perot Michelson laser gravitational-wave detectors to thermal focusing in optical substrates. We assume that the thermal distortions are small enough that we can represent the unperturbed intracavity field anywhere in the detector as a linear combination of basis functions related to the eigenmodes of one of the Fabry-Perot arm cavities, and we take great care to preserve numerically the nearly ideal longitudinal phase resonance conditions that would otherwise be provided by an external servo-locking control system. We have included the effects of nonlinear thermal focusing due to power absorption in both the substrates and coatings of the mirrors and beamsplitter, the effects of a finite mismatch between the curvatures of the laser wavefront and the mirror surface, and the diffraction by the mirror aperture at each instance of reflection and transmission. We demonstrate a detailed numerical example of this model using the MATLAB program Melody for the initial LIGO detector in the Hermite-Gauss basis, and compare the resulting computations of intracavity fields in two special cases with those of a fast Fourier transform field propagation model. Additional systematic perturbations (e.g., mirror tilt, thermoelastic surface deformations, and other optical imperfections) can be included easily by incorporating the appropriate operators into the transfer matrices describing reflection and transmission for the mirrors and beamsplitter.

Abstract:We study projective structures on a surface having poles of prescribed orders. We obtain a monodromy map from a complex manifold parameterising such structures to the stack of framed $\mathrm{PGL}_2(\mathbb{C})$ local systems on the associated marked bordered surface. We prove that the image of this map is contained in the union of the domains of the cluster charts. We discuss a number of open questions concerning this monodromy map.

Abstract:We explore the enumerative problem of finding lines on cubic surfaces defined by symmetric polynomials. We prove that the moduli space of symmetric cubic surfaces is an arithmetic quotient of the complex hyperbolic line, and determine constraints on the monodromy group of lines on symmetric cubic surfaces arising from Hodge theory and geometry of the associated cover. This interestingly fails to pin down the entire Galois group. Leveraging computations in equivariant line geometry and homotopy continuation, we prove that the Galois group is the Klein 4-group. This is the first computation in what promises to be an interesting direction of research: studying monodromy in classical enumerative problems restricted by a finite group of symmetries.

Monodromy of elliptic logarithms: some topological methods and effective results

Abstract:We present some effective approaches in studying the relative monodromy group of elliptic logarithms with respect to periods of elliptic schemes. We provide explicit ways of constructing explicit loops which leave periods unchanged but along which logarithms have non-trivial variations. We also get some topological methods and effective results which allow to manage the ramification locus of sections. The paper was inspired by a theorem of Corvaja and Zannier which abstractly determine the relative monodromy group of non-torsion sections.

Abstract:We determine the relative monodromy group of abelian logarithms with respect to periods in the cases of fibered products of elliptic schemes. This gives rise to a result stronger than a theorem due to Y. André and implies in particular the algebraic independence of the logarithm of any non-torsion section and the periods. We then conjecture an analogous result for the general case of an abelian scheme of arbitrary relative dimension. This generalizes a theorem of Corvaja and Zannier which determines the said group in the case of a single elliptic scheme.

Abstract:We determine the image of the monodromy map for meromorphic projective structures with poles of orders greater than two. This proves the analogue of a theorem of Gallo-Kapovich-Marden, and answers a question of Allegretti and Bridgeland. Our proof uses coordinates on the moduli space of framed representations arising from the work of Fock and Goncharov.

Abstract:The space of monic squarefree polynomials has a stratification according to the multiplicities of the critical points, called the equicritical stratification. Tracking the positions of roots and critical points, there is a map from the fundamental group of a stratum into a braid group. We give a complete determination of this map. It turns out to be characterized by the geometry of the translation surface structure on $\mathbb{CP}^1$ induced by the logarithmic derivative $df/f$ of a polynomial in the stratum.

Abstract:For a punctured surface $S$, we characterize the representations of its fundamental group into $\mathrm{PSL}_2 (\mathbb{C})$ that arise as the monodromy of a meromorphic projective structure on $S$ with poles of order at most two and no apparent singularities. This proves the analogue of a theorem of Gallo-Kapovich-Marden concerning $\mathbb{C}\mathrm{P}^1$-structures on closed surfaces, and settles a long-standing question about characterizing monodromy groups for the Schwarzian equation on punctured spheres. The proof involves a geometric interpretation of the Fock-Goncharov coordinates of the moduli space of framed $\mathrm{PSL}_2 (\mathbb{C})$-representations, following ideas of Thurston and some recent results of Allegretti-Bridgeland.

Abstract:This paper is to investigate an elliptic fibration over $\mathbb{CP}^2$ arising from the Lagrange top from the viewpoint of complex algebraic geometry. The description of the discriminant locus of this elliptic fibration is given in detail. Moreover, the concrete description of the discriminant locus and the complete classification of singular fibres of the elliptic fibration are obtained according to Miranda's theory of elliptic threefolds after suitable modifications of the base and total spaces. Furthermore, the monodromy of the elliptic fibration is described.

Abstract:The combination of this paper and its companion complete the classification of monodromy groups of indecomposable coverings of complex curves $f:X\rightarrow \mathbb P^1$ of sufficiently large degree in comparison to the genus of $X$. In this paper we determine all such coverings with monodromy group $G\leq S_\ell\wr S_t$ of product type for $t\ge 2$.

Abstract:The Shafarevich conjecture for a class of varieties over a number field posits the finitude of those with good reduction outside a finite set of primes. In the case of hypersurfaces in the torus $\mathbb{G}_m^n$, a natural class to consider are those with a fixed Newton polyhedron that are nondegenerate with respect to it. Using an approach similar to that of Lawrence-Sawin for abelian varieties (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2004.09046" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2004.09046">arXiv:2004.09046</a>), we prove the Shafarevich conjecture for certain classes of Newton polyhedra. In the course of our proof we construct a fiber functor for the Tannakian category of perverse sheaves on the torus in positive characteristic and compute the weights of the Frobenius on it, which leads to the big monodromy results which are key to this method.

On Positive Braids, Monodromy Groups and Framings

Abstract:We associate to every positive braid a braid monodromy group, generalizing the geometric monodromy group of an isolated plane curve singularity. If the closure of the braid is a knot, we identify the corresponding group with a framed mapping class group. In particular, this gives a well defined knot invariant. As an application, we obtain that the geometric monodromy group of an irreducible singularity is determined by the genus and the Arf invariant of the associated knot.

Abstract:We study the monodromy diffeomorphism of Milnor fibrations of isolated complex surface singularities, by computing the family Seiberg--Witten invariant of Seifert-fibered Dehn twists using recent advances in monopole Floer homology. More precisely, we establish infinite order non-triviality results for boundary Dehn twists on indefinite symplectic fillings of links of minimally elliptic surface singularities. Using this, we exhibit a wide variety of new phenomena in dimension four: (1) smoothings of isolated complex surface singularities whose Milnor fibration has monodromy with infinite order as a diffeomorphism but with finite order as a homeomorphism, (2) robust Torelli symplectomorphisms that do not factor as products of Dehn--Seidel twists, (3) compactly supported exotic diffeomorphisms of exotic $\mathbb{R}^4$'s and contractible manifolds.

Abstract:We compute the topological monodromy of every family of complete intersection curves. Like in the case of plane curves previously treated by the second-named author, we find the answer is given by the $r$-spin mapping class group associated to the maximal root of the adjoint line bundle. Our main innovation is a suite of tools for studying the monodromy of sections of a tensor product of very ample line bundles in terms of the monodromy of sections of the factors, allowing for an induction on (multi-)degree.

Singular fibers in algebraic fibrations of genus 2 and their monodromy factorizations

Abstract:Kodaira's classification of singular fibers in elliptic fibrations and its translation into the language of monodromies and Lefschetz fibrations has been a boon to the study of 4-manifolds. In this article, we begin the work of translating between singular fibers of genus 2 families of algebraic curves and the positive Dehn twist factorizations of Lefschetz fibrations for a certain subset of the singularities described by Namikawa and Ueno in the 70s. We look at four families of hypersurface singularities in $\mathbb{C}^3$. Each hypersurface comes equipped with a fibration by genus 2 algebraic curves which degenerate into a single singular fiber. We determine the resolution of each of the singularities in the family and find a flat deformation of the resolution into simpler pieces, resulting in a fibration of Lefschetz type. We then record the description of the Lefschetz as a positive factorization in Dehn twists. This gives us a dictionary between configurations of curves and monodromy factorizations for some singularities of genus 2 fibrations.

Topological monodromy kernels for fundamental groups of discriminant complements

Abstract:A linear system on a smooth complex algebraic surface gives rise to a family of smooth curves in the surface. Such a family has a topological monodromy representation valued in the mapping class group of a fiber. Extending arguments of Kuno, we show that if the image of this representation is of finite index, then the kernel is infinite. This applies in particular to linear systems on smooth toric surfaces and on smooth complete intersections. In the case of plane curves, we extend the techniques of Carlson-Toledo to show that the kernel is quite rich (e.g. it contains a nonabelian free group).
