Abstract:Given a compact orientable surface, the mapping class group is shown to have a presentation so that the generators are the set of all Dehn twists and the relations are supported in subsurfaces homeomorphic to the one-holed torus or the four-holed sphere. It turns out that all the relations were discovered by Dehn in 1938.

Abstract:In these lectures, we give the proofs of two basic theorems on surface topology, namely, the work of Dehn and Lickorish on generating the mapping class group of a surface by Dehn-twists; and the work of Dehn and Nielsen on relating self-homeomorphisms of a surface and automorphisms of the fundamental group of the surface. Some of the basic materials on hyperbolic geometry and large scale geometry are introduced.

Abstract:This paper is an exploration of the faithful transitive permutation representations of the orientation-preserving automorphisms groups of highly symmetric toroidal maps and hypermaps. The main theorems of this paper give a list of all possible degrees of these specific groups. This extends prior accomplishments of the authors, wherein their focus was confined to the study of the automorphisms groups of toroidal regular maps and hypermaps. In addition the authors bring out the recently developed {\sc GAP} package {\sc corefreesub} that can be used to find faithful transitive permutation representations of any group. With the aid of this powerful tool, the authors show how Schreier coset graphs of the automorphism groups of toroidal maps and hypermaps can be easily constructed.

Abstract:In this paper, we give presentations of the mapping class groups of marked surfaces stabilizing boundaries for any genus. Note that in the existing works, the mapping class groups of marked surfaces were the isotopy classes of homeomorphisms fixing boundaries pointwise. The condition for stabilizing boundaries of mapping class groups makes the requirement for mapping class groups to fix boundaries pointwise to be unnecessary. As an application of presentations of the mapping class groups of marked surfaces stabilizing boundaries, we obtain the presentation of the cluster automorphism group of a cluster algebra from a feasible surface ( S, M ). Lastly, for the case (1) 4-punctured sphere, the cluster automorphism group of a cluster algebra from the surface is characterized. Since cluster automorphism groups of cluster algebras from those surfaces were given in [1] in the cases (2) the once-punctured 4-gon and (3) the twice-punctured digon, we indeed give presentations of cluster automorphism groups of cluster algebras from surfaces which are not feasible. Abstract:In this paper, we show that the mapping class group of a closed surface can not be geometrically realized as a group of homeomorphisms of that surface. More precisely, let $Pr:\mathcal{H}\textit{omeo}(M)\to\mathcal{M}\mathcal{C}(M)$ denote the standard projection of the group of homeomorphisms to the mapping class group of a closed surface M of genus g>5. We show that there is no homomorphism $\mathcal{E}:\mathcal{M}\mathcal{C}(M)\to\mathcal{H}\textit{omeo}(M)$, such that $Pr\circ\mathcal{E}$ is the identity. This answers a question by Thurston (see [11]).

Abstract:This paper uses the renowned Kechris-Pestov-Todorčević machinery to show that (big) mapping class groups are not extremely amenable unless the underlying surface is a sphere or a once-punctured sphere, or equivalently when the mapping class group is trivial. The same techniques also show that the pure mapping class groups, as well as compactly supported mapping class groups, of a surface with genus at least one can never be extremely amenable.

Abstract:Let $T_{g,n}$ be a compact orientable topological surface of genus $g$ with $n$ marked points and let $M(g,n)$ denote its mapping class group. We study the action on the fundamental group of the surface induced by the self-homeomorphisms of the mapping class group by describing completely the case of positive genus. In order to do so, we use a presentation for the mapping class group with generators the Humphries generators and compute their images as elements of the outer automorphism group of the fundamental group, since the action is defined only up to conjugation.

Abstract:We define orbifold mapping class groups (with marked points) and study them using their action on certain orbifold analogs of arcs and simple closed curves. Moreover, we establish a Birman exact sequence for suitable subgroups of orbifold mapping class groups. The short exact sequence allows us to deduce finite presentations of these groups. This is the basis for a similar discussion of orbifold braid groups in [6].

Abstract:This paper has 3 principal goals: (1) to survey what is know about mapping class and Torelli groups of simply connected compact Kaehler manifolds, (2) supplement these results, and (3) present a list of questions and open problems to stimulate future work. Apart from reviewing general background, the paper focuses on the case of hypersurfaces in projective space. We explain how older results of Carlson--Toledo <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="alg-geom/9708002" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/alg-geom/9708002">arXiv:alg-geom/9708002</a> and recent results of Kreck--Su <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2009.08054" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2009.08054">arXiv:2009.08054</a> imply that the homomorphism from the fundamental group of the moduli space of hypersurfaces in P^4 to the mapping class group of the underlying manifold has a very large kernel (contains a free group of rank 2) and has image of infinite index. This is in contrast to the case of curves, where the homomorphism is an isomorphism.

Abstract:We compute the topological mapping class group of every compact, simply connected, topological 4-manifold. This was previously only known in the closed case. If the 4-manifold is smooth, we deduce an analogous description of the stable smooth mapping class group, extending work of Saeki.

Abstract:Given any connected compact orientable surface, a pair of mapping classes is said to be procongruently conjugate if it induces a conjugate pair of outer automophisms on the profinite completion of the fundamental group of the surface. For example, this occurs if they induce conjugate outer automorphisms on every characteristic finite quotient of the fundamental group. In this paper, it is shown that every procongruent conjugacy class of mapping classes, as a subset of the surface mapping class group, is the disjoint union of at most finitely many conjugacy classes of mapping classes. For any pseudo-Anosov mapping class of a connected closed orientable surface, several topological features are confirmed to depend only on the procongurent conjugacy class of the mapping class, including the stretching factor, the topological type of the prong singularities, the transverse orientability of the invariant foliations, and the isomorphism type of the symplectic Floer homology.
