Abstract:Twisted knot theory, introduced by M.O. Bourgoin, is a generalization of virtual knot theory. It naturally yields the notion of a twisted braid, which is closely related to the notion of a virtual braid due to Kauffman. In this paper, we first prove that any twisted link can be described as the closure of a twisted braid, which is unique up to certain basic moves. This is the analogue of the Alexander Theorem and the Markov Theorem for classical braids and links. Then we also give reduced presentations for the twisted braid group and the flat twisted braid group. These reduced presentations are based on the fact that these twisted braid groups on $n$ strands are generated by a single braiding element and a single bar element plus the generators of the symmetric group on $n$ letters.

Abstract:We classify homomorphisms from the braid group on $n$ strands to the pure mapping class group of a nonoriantable surface of genus $g$. For $n\ge 14$ and $g\le 2\lfloor{n/2}\rfloor+1$ every such homomorphism is either cyclic, or it maps standard generators of the braid group to either distinct Dehn twists, or distinct crosscap transpositions, possibly multiplied by the same element of the centralizer of the image.

Abstract:We are interested in the 3-Calabi-Yau categories $\mathcal{D}$ arising from quivers with potential associated to a triangulated marked surface $\mathbf{S}$ (without punctures). We prove that the spherical twist group ST of $\mathcal{D}$ is isomorphic to a subgroup (generated by braid twists) of the mapping class group of the decorated marked surface $\mathbf{S}_{\bigtriangleup}$. Here $\mathbf{S}_{\bigtriangleup}$ is the surface obtained from $\mathbf{S}$ by decorating with a set of decorated points, where the number of points equals the number of triangles in any triangulations of $\mathbf{S}$. For instance, when $\mathbf{S}$ is an annulus, the result implies the corresponding spaces of stability conditions on $\mathcal{D}$ is contractible.

Abstract:Following the completion of the algebraic construction of the Poisson wild character varieties (B.--Yamakawa, 2015) one can consider their natural deformations, generalising both the mapping class group actions on the usual (tame) character varieties, and the G-braid groups already known to occur in the wild/irregular setting. Here we study these wild mapping class groups in the case of arbitrary formal structure in type A. As we will recall, this story is most naturally phrased in terms of admissible deformations of wild Riemann surfaces. The main results are: 1) the construction of configuration spaces containing all possible local deformations, 2) the definition of a combinatorial object, the ``fission forest'', of any wild Riemann surface and a proof that it gives a sharp parameterisation of all the admissible deformation classes. As an application of 1), by considering basic examples, we show that the braid groups of all the complex reflection groups known as the generalised symmetric groups appear as wild mapping class groups. As an application of 2), we compute the dimensions of all the (global) moduli spaces of type A wild Riemann surfaces (in fixed admissible deformation classes), a generalisation of the famous ``Riemann's count'' of the dimensions of the moduli spaces of compact Riemann surfaces.

Abstract:In the present paper, we construct an invariant of braids in the real projective plane which corresponds to an ``action'' of braids on certain graphs in $\R{}P^{2}$ with labels. This paper is a sequel of papers \cite{M},\cite{KM}. It demonstrates once more that solutions to the octagon relation in various forms give rise to invariants of braids.

Abstract:We associate to every positive braid a braid monodromy group, generalizing the geometric monodromy group of an isolated plane curve singularity. If the closure of the braid is a knot, we identify the corresponding group with a framed mapping class group. In particular, this gives a well defined knot invariant. As an application, we obtain that the geometric monodromy group of an irreducible singularity is determined by the genus and the Arf invariant of the associated knot.

Abstract:We unify and generalize several approaches to constructing braid group representations from finite groups, using iterated twisted tensor products. We provide some general characterizations and classification of these representations, focusing on the size of their images, which are typically finite groups. The well-studied Gaussian representations associated with metaplectic modular categories can be understood in this framework, and we give some new examples to illustrate their ubiquity. Our results suggest a relationship between the braiding on the G-gaugings of a pointed modular category $${\mathcal {C}}(A,Q)$$ and that of $${\mathcal {C}}(A,Q)$$ itself.

Abstract:Abstract Let $$g_t$$ g t be a loop in the space of monic complex polynomials in one variable of fixed degree n . If the roots of $$g_t$$ g t are distinct for all t , they form a braid $$B_1$$ B 1 on n strands. Likewise, if the critical points of $$g_t$$ g t are distinct for all t , they form a braid $$B_2$$ B 2 on $$n-1$$ n - 1 strands. In this paper we study the relationship between $$B_1$$ B 1 and $$B_2$$ B 2 . Composing the polynomials $$g_t$$ g t with the argument map defines a pseudo-fibration map on the complement of the closure of $$B_1$$ B 1 in $${\mathbb {C}}\times S^1$$ C × S 1 , whose critical points lie on $$B_2$$ B 2 . We prove that for $$B_1$$ B 1 a T-homogeneous braid and $$B_2$$ B 2 the trivial braid this map can be taken to be a fibration map. In the case of homogeneous braids we present a visualization of this fact. Our work implies that for every pair of links $$L_1$$ L 1 and $$L_2$$ L 2 there is a mixed polynomial $$f:{\mathbb {C}}^2\rightarrow {\mathbb {C}}$$ f : C 2 → C in complex variables u , v and the complex conjugate $$\overline{v}$$ v ̄ such that both f and the derivative $$f_u$$ f u have a weakly isolated singularity at the origin with $$L_1$$ L 1 as the link of the singularity of f and $$L_2$$ L 2 as a sublink of the link of the singularity of $$f_u$$ f u .

Abstract:The $d$-fold ($d \geq 3$) branched coverings on a disk give an infinite family of nongeometric embeddings of braid groups into mapping class groups. We, in this paper, give new explicit expressions of these braid group representations into automorphism groups of free groups in terms of the actions on the generators of free groups. We also give a systematic way of constructing and expressing these braid group representations in terms of a new gadget, called covering groupoid. We prove that each generator $\widetilde{\beta}_i$ of braid group inside mapping class group induced by $d$-fold covering is the product of $d-1$ Dehn twists on the surface.

Abstract:Let $S$ and $S'$ be orientable finite-type surfaces of genus $g\geq 4$ and $g'$, respectively. We prove that every multitwist-preserving map between pure mapping class groups $\text{PMap}(S)\to \text{PMap}(S')$ is induced by a multi-embedding. As an application, we classify all homomorphisms $\text{PMap}(S)\to \text{PMap}(S')$ for $g\geq 4$ and $g' \leq 6\cdot 2^{g-4}$.

Abstract:We characterize the groups of branched twist spins of classical knots in terms of 3-manifold groups, and also give a purely algebraic, conjectural characterization in terms of $PD_3$-groups. We show also that each group is the group of at most finitely many branched twist spins.

Abstract:We prove that the double branched cover of a twist-roll spun knot in $S^4$ is smoothly preserved when four twists are added, and that the double branched cover of a twist-roll spun knot connected sum with a trivial projective plane is preserved after two twists are added. As a consequence, we conclude that a family of homotopy $\mathbb{CP}^2$s recently constructed by Miyazawa are each diffeomorphic to $\mathbb{CP}^2$.

Abstract:Over-then-Under (OU) tangles are oriented tangles whose strands travel through all of their over crossings before any under crossings. In this paper we discuss the idea of gliding: an algorithm by which any tangle diagram could be brought to OU form. Unfortunately, the algorithm is flawed. However, by analyzing cases in which it does succeed we obtain a braid classification result, which we also extend to virtual braids, and provide a Mathematica implementation. We discuss other instances of successful "gliding ideas" which appear in the literature - sometimes in disguise - such as the Drinfel'd double construction, Enriquez's work on quantization of Lie bialgebras, and Audoux and Meilhan's classification of welded homotopy links,

Abstract:We consider a set of toric Calabi–Yau varieties which arise as deformations of the small resolutions of type A surface singularities. By careful analysis of the heuristics of B-brane transport in the associated gauged linear sigma models, we predict the existence of a mixed braid group action on the derived category of each variety, and then prove that this action does indeed exist. This generalizes the braid group action found by Seidel and Thomas for the undeformed resolutions. We also show that the actions for different deformations are related, in a way that is predicted by the physical heuristics.

Other applications include geometric realizations of Amiot's quotient for cluster categories and of simple-projective duality for Ginzburg dg algebras.

Abstract:In this paper we introduce the framed pure braid group on $n$ strands of an oriented surface, a topological generalisation of the pure braid group $P_n$. We give different equivalents definitions for framed pure braid groups and we study exact sequences relating these groups with other generalisations of $P_n$, usually called surface pure braid groups. The notion of surface framed braid groups is also introduced.

Abstract:We establish faithfulness of braid group actions generated by twists along an ADE configuration of $2$-spherical objects in a derived category. Our major tool is the Garside structure on braid groups of type ADE. This faithfulness result provides the missing ingredient in Bridgeland's description of a space of stability conditions associated to a Kleinian singularity.
