Abstract:A Raman fiber laser with more than 220 W output at 1.24 μm with phosphorus-doped single-mode fiber as gain medium is reported. The laser consists of a 30 m long piece of fiber and a pair of fiber Bragg gratings with different bandwidth, pumped with a high power 1064 nm Yb fiber laser. The optical conversion efficiency is 64% and the slope efficiency is 71.4%. The full width half-maximum linewidth at the maximum output is 5.6 nm. To the best of our knowledge, the reported power is an order magnitude higher than previous reports in phosphosilicate fiber Raman laser.

Abstract:An over 200 W high-power first-order random Raman fiber laser (RRFL) at 1238 nm is demonstrated. The laser is based on a half-open cavity with a piece of 30 m phosphosilicate fiber. This RRFL is pumped by a conventional 1064 nm Yb-doped fiber laser. After suppressing the silica Raman component, a maximum output power of 206.7 W is obtained with a full width half-maximum linewidth of 7.1 nm at a pump power of 346.3 W, corresponding to an optical-to-optical efficiency of 59.7%. To the best of our knowledge, this is the highest reported output power of RRFL on the basis of phosphosilicate fiber with the shortest cavity length. (C) 2019 Optical Society of America

Abstract:We report a narrow linewidth and low threshold single-frequency distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) fiber laser at 1120 nm based on a short 1.5 cm long Nd-doped silica fiber which, to the best of our knowledge, is the first demonstration of a Nd-doped fiber-based single-frequency fiber laser with a wavelength greater than 1100 nm. A stable single-longitudinal-mode laser operation with a signal-to-noise ratio greater than 67 dB was verified by a scanning Fabry-Perot interferometer. The laser threshold is as low as 10 mW. The DBR fiber laser has a maximum output power of 15 mW and optical-to-optical efficiency for the launched pump power reaches more than 8%. The narrow linewidth of 71.5 kHz is obtained in such a single-frequency fiber laser (SFFL). Our result is expected to offer an exciting new opportunity to realize high-performance SFFLs above 1100 nm.

Abstract:A high-power, high-efficiency single-frequency fiber laser at 1064 nm was demonstrated based on a distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) all-silica-fiber configuration. A single-frequency laser with an output power of 642 mW and slope efficiency of 66.4% with respect to absorbed pump power was achieved from a 1.2-cm-long commercially available Yb3+-doped silica fiber. To the best of our knowledge, this is the highest single-frequency laser power and efficiency obtained from the DBR all-silica fiber laser. The work presented here paves the way for the development of high-power, robust, and cost-effective single-frequency Yb3+-doped all-silica fiber lasers.

Abstract:Based on a 1.8-cm-long heavily Tm3+-doped germanate fiber and being in-band-pumped by a 1610 nm single-mode laser, a high-efficiency and high-power single-frequency distribute Bragg reflector (DBR) fiber laser emitting at 1950 nm is demonstrated. The DBR fiber laser has a maximum output power of ~617 mW and a slope efficiency for the absorbed pump power reaches to more than 42.2%. A stable single-longitudinal-mode laser output with a signal-to-noise ratio of greater than 63 dB is realized. The measured relative intensity-noise of the fiber laser reaches to around -150 dB/Hz at frequencies of over 8.4 MHz. It is beneficial to exploit the sub-watt and high-efficiency single-frequency laser from fiber oscillators directly, especially in the application of multiple paths coherent beam combination and optical medical technology.

Abstract:A distributed feedback (DFB) fiber laser based on a 32-mm long pi-phase-shifted fiber Bragg grating inscribed using the femtosecond point-by-point technique in a single-mode erbium-doped optical fiber (CorActive EDF-L 1500) is demonstrated. The lasing power of the DFB laser reaches 0.7 mW at a wavelength of 1550 nm when pumped with a laser diode at a wavelength of 976 nm and power of 525 mW. The width of the lasing spectrum is 17 kHz. It is shown that the pi-phase-shifted fiber Bragg grating fs-inscribed in a non-PM fiber provides the selection of the single polarization mode of the DFB laser. DFB laser formation in a highly doped non-photosensitive optical fiber (CoreActive SCF-ER60-8/125-12) is also demonstrated.

Abstract:We present experimental results on the lasing of a short distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) Raman fiber laser (RFL) with short cavity length. The high finesse laser cavity with an effective length of 17 cm was realized by direct inscription of two Bragg gratings into a short piece of highly nonlinear polarization maintaining Raman fiber. It is pumped by an Ytterbium fiber laser at 1100 nm with up to 8 W pump power. The Stokes wave at 1151 nm is generated within the DBR RFL with 700-mW output power and a narrow spectral full-width at half-maximum bandwidth of 60 pm. Due to the short cavity length, the number of oscillating longitudinal modes is strongly reduced to less than 24 modes. The short DBR RFL has a low lasing threshold of 4.1 W. Its spectral properties and temporal stability are investigated. Distinct longitudinal cavity modes could be observed within the radio-frequency intermode-beat spectrum detected with a fast photodiode. The measured mode separation of 607 MHz validates the short effective length of 17 cm.

Abstract:<p>A narrow-linewidth erbium-doped fiber laser based on the fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) fabricated was proposed and demonstrated experimentally. A pair of FBGs with reflectivity of 92% and 10%, respectively, at the center wavelength of 1580 nm were inscribed in standard SMF-28 fibers without hydrogen loading by femtosecond laser point-by-point directly writing method, which was used as mirrors for wavelength selection of fiber laser, gratings full width at half maximum (FWHM) was less than 0.15 nm. A simple linear-cavity fiber laser was realized based on gain medium, pump source and FBGs. When gain medium of Er-doped fiber is selected 8 m, a stable single wavelength of 1579 nm laser with a 3 dB linewidth of 0.06 nm was obtained. Its output power is 24.1 mW when the maximum pump power is 600 mA, and its single wavelength of 1579 nm is consistent with the central wavelength of the fabricated FBGs. This type of laser source shows real promise for applications in coherent optical frequency domain reflectometry and high resolution fiber sensor systems.</p>

Abstract:Cascaded Raman lasers enable high powers at various wavelength bands inaccessible with conventional rare-earth doped lasers. The input and output wavelengths of conventional implementations are fixed by the constituent fiber gratings necessary for cascaded Raman conversion. We demonstrate here, a simple architecture for high power, fixed and wavelength tunable, grating-free, cascaded Raman conversion between different wavelength bands. The architecture is based on the recently proposed distributed feedback Raman lasers. Here, we implement a module which converts the Ytterbium band to the eye-safe 1.5micron region. We demonstrate pump-limited output powers of over 30W in fixed and continuously wavelength tunable configurations.

Abstract:A high peak-power and narrow-linewidth all-fiber Raman pulsed laser operating around 1.65 µm is introduced. A 1541 nm laser seed is modulated into pulse trains, which will be used as the Raman pump laser, by driving a reflective semiconductor optical amplifier (RSOA) with a continuous periodic square-wave voltage. A homemade high peak-power 1541 nm pulsed laser is employed to modulate and amplify a 1653.7 nm distributed feedback laser (DFB) seed synchronously in a segment of the 52-meter-long highly germania-doped fiber (HGDF). The repetition-rate and the pulse-width of the 1653.7 nm pulsed laser are 100 kHz and 31 ns, respectively. The peak power is estimated to be as high as about 30.85 W, and a 3-dB linewidth as narrow as less than 0.08 nm is achieved when the average power of 1541 nm pump is 3.1 W. The wavelength of Raman pulsed laser can be tuned from 1652.0 nm to 1654.0 nm continuously with an optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) of more than 35 dB.

Abstract:We demonstrate a new high efficiency architecture for cascaded Raman fiber lasers based on a single pass cascaded amplifier configuration. Conversion is seeded at all intermediate Stokes wavelengths using a multi-wavelength seed source. A lower power Raman laser based on the conventional cascaded Raman resonator architecture provides a convenient seed source providing all the necessary wavelengths simultaneously. In this work we demonstrate a 1480nm laser pumped by an 1117nm Yb-doped fiber laser with maximum output power of 204W and conversion efficiency of 65% (quantum-limited efficiency is ~75%). We believe both the output power and conversion efficiency (relative to quantum-limited efficiency) are the highest reported for cascaded Raman fiber lasers.

Abstract:Hollow-core photonic crystal fibers (HC-PCFs) provide an ideal transmission medium and experimental platform for laser-matter interaction. Here, we report a cascaded all-fiber gas Raman laser based on deuterium (D2)-filled HC-PCFs. D2 is sealed into a gas cavity formed by a 49 m-long HC-PCF and solid-core fibers, and two homemade fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) with the Raman and pump wavelength, respectively, are further introduced. When pumped by a pulsed fiber amplifier at 1540 nm, the pure rotational stimulated Raman scattering of D2 occurs inside the cavity. The first-order Raman laser at 1645 nm can be obtained, realizing a maximum power of ~0.8 W. An all-fiber cascaded gas Raman laser oscillator is achieved by adding another 1645 nm high-reflectivity FBG at the output end of the cavity, reducing the peak power of the cascaded Raman threshold by 11.4%. The maximum cascaded Raman power of ~0.5 W is obtained when the pump source is at its maximum, and the corresponding conversion efficiency inside the cavity is 21.4%, which is 1.8 times that of the previous configuration. Moreover, the characteristics of the second-order Raman lasers at 1695 nm and 1730 nm are also studied thoroughly. This work provides a significant method for realizing all-fiber cascaded gas Raman lasers, which is beneficial for expanding the output wavelength of fiber gas lasers with a good stability and compactivity.

Abstract:Monolithic distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) cavity which directly integrates fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) into the photosensitive RE-doped fibers is a promising configuration in constructing compact and efficient single frequency fiber lasers (SFFLs). Yet, the doping level of rare-earth (RE) ions has generally to be sacrificed in the classical Ge-photosensitized RE-doped silica fibers because of the dramatic refractive index increase caused by the introduction of Ge. Here, we demonstrate an approach to realize the trade-off between photosensitivity and RE doping concentration. We validate that the addition of a small amount of cerium (0.37wt.%) instead of Ge could photosensitize Yb3+-doped silica fiber (YDF), while maintaining fiber numerical aperture (NA) at 0.12 under a high 2.5-wt.% Yb doping level. Based on the short monolithic DBR cavity constructed by this germanium-free photosensitive highly YDF, a 1064 nm fiber laser with a 48.6% slope efficiency and an over 200 mW power on two orthogonally polarized modes could be realized. Further stable and linear-polarized 1064 nm SFFL is also demonstrated in a designed monolithic polarization maintaining cavity with an output power of 119 mW and an efficiency of 26.4%. Our results provide an alternative way to develop photosensitive highly RE-doped fibers towards monolithic laser cavity application.

Abstract:A 1080 nm single-polarization single frequency distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) fiber laser is fabricated by directly inscribing fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) in ytterbium-doped fiber using a femtosecond laser. The high reflectivity FBG with high birefringence is prepared by femtosecond laser overexposure, serving a polarizing element. The low reflectivity FBG is inscribed by scanning axially along the fiber to narrow the FBG bandwidth. This DBR fiber laser avoided the mode hopping as temperature variation and intracavity fusion loss. A single frequency laser with an output power greater than 11 mW, a linewidth of 32 kHz, and a polarization extinction ratio of 10 dB is achieved at a pump power of 517 mW. The influences of the cavity length and LR-FBG reflectivity on the linewidth and output power are further studied. This provides a reference for optimizing the performance of integrated single-frequency DBR fiber laser prepared by a femtosecond laser.

Abstract:We demonstrate a narrow-linewidth high-order-mode (HOM) Brillouin random fiber laser (BRFL) based on a long-period fiber grating (LPFG) and distributed Rayleigh random feedback in a half-open linear cavity. The single-mode operation of the laser radiation with sub-kilohertz linewidth is achieved thanks to distributed Brillouin amplification and Rayleigh scattering along kilometer-long single mode fibers whilst a few mode fiber-based LPFGs enable the transverse mode conversion among a broadband wavelength range. Meanwhile, a dynamic fiber grating (DFG) is embedded and incorporated to manipulate and purify the random modes, which hence suppresses the frequency drift resulting from random mode hopping. Consequently, the random laser emission with either high-order scalar or vector modes can be generated with a high laser efficiency of 25.5% and an ultra-narrow 3-dB linewidth of 230 Hz. Furthermore, the dependence of the laser efficiency and frequency stability on the gain fiber length are also experimentally investigated. It is believed that our approach could provide a promising platform for a wide range of applications such as coherent optical communication, high-resolution imaging, highly sensitive sensing, etc.

Abstract:This research addressed the reduced impact of cues under high processing motivation of persuasion experiments. The results of 3 studies suggested that such reduced impact is due to a relevance override whereby any more subjectively relevant information swamps the effects of any less subjectively relevant information, given the recipient's sufficient motivation to process both. Because, in much persuasion research, cues may have been perceived as less relevant to the attitudinal judgments than message arguments, the relevance override hypothesis provides a general explanation of the reduced cue effect.
Kilowatt-level Yb-Raman fiber amplifier with narrow-linewidth and near-diffraction-limited beam quality

Abstract:By focusing on a typical emitting wavelength of 1120 nm as an example, we present the first demonstration of a high-efficiency, narrow-linewidth kilowatt-level all-fiber amplifier based on hybrid ytterbium-Raman (Yb-Raman) gains. Notably, two temporally stable, phase-modulated single-frequency lasers operating at 1064 nm and 1120nm, respectively, were applied in the fiber amplifier, to alleviate the spectral broadening of the 1120 signal laser and suppress the stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) effect simultaneously. Over 1 kW narrow-linewidth 1120 nm signal laser was obtained with a slope efficiency of ~ 77% and a beam quality of M2~1.21. The amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) noise in the fiber amplifier was effectively suppressed by incorporating an ASE-filtering system between the seed laser and the main amplifier. Further examination of the influence of power ratios between the two seed lasers on the conversion efficiency had proved that the presented amplifier could work efficiently when the power ratio of 1120 nm seed laser ranged from 31% to 61%. Overall, this setup could provide a well reference for obtaining high power narrow-linewidth fiber lasers operating within 1100-1200 nm.

Abstract:We report on a double spaced Brillouin–Raman comb fiber laser covering the spectral range of 1654–1677 nm. A 3 W fiber laser source with center wavelength at 1545 nm is used as the Raman pump for a 2.6 km dispersion compensation fiber to generate peak Raman gain at 13.2 THz away from the Brillouin pump (BP) which is around 1655 nm. A 5 mW narrow linewidth laser diode is utilized as the BP to generate multiwavelength Brillouin–Raman comb fiber laser (MBRCFL). A stable MBRCFL is generated with maximum bandwidth of 23 nm which contains 136 Brillouin Stokes with 0.168 nm spacing between BP and first Stoke corresponding to 18.4 GHz frequency spacing, an average power of 340 mW and optical signal to noise ratio of 26 dB. The output power fluctuation of less than 4% is measured over a period of 4 h. Moreover, the slope efficiency of 34% is achieved while the flat-amplitude bandwidth of about 17 nm is observed.

Abstract:We demonstrated a straightforward approach to generate red and near-infrared laser emissions by a Raman-assisted four wave mixing (FWM) process in a nonlinear Yb-doped fiber amplifier, delivering 342 fs pulses of 241 nJ at 864 nm, 834 fs pulses of 21 nJ at 751 nm, and 1.9 ps pulses of 3.8 μJ at 1030 nm. A pair of gratings was employed as the pre-compressor to promote the intensity of the fundamental wave in the main amplifier. Multiple wavelengths from 751 to 1273 nm resulted due to cascaded-Raman-assisted FWM. The pre-compression also underlay the achievement of 25.1, 701, and 2000 kW peak power for the red (751 nm), near-infrared (864 nm), and fundamental (1030 nm) components respectively, which restrained the gain narrowing effect during the amplification. It finally led to shorter pulse duration under increased power.
