Abstract:By focusing on a typical emitting wavelength of 1120 nm as an example, we present the first demonstration of a high-efficiency, narrow-linewidth kilowatt-level all-fiber amplifier based on hybrid ytterbium-Raman (Yb-Raman) gains. Notably, two temporally stable, phase-modulated single-frequency lasers operating at 1064 nm and 1120nm, respectively, were applied in the fiber amplifier, to alleviate the spectral broadening of the 1120 signal laser and suppress the stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) effect simultaneously. Over 1 kW narrow-linewidth 1120 nm signal laser was obtained with a slope efficiency of ~ 77% and a beam quality of M2~1.21. The amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) noise in the fiber amplifier was effectively suppressed by incorporating an ASE-filtering system between the seed laser and the main amplifier. Further examination of the influence of power ratios between the two seed lasers on the conversion efficiency had proved that the presented amplifier could work efficiently when the power ratio of 1120 nm seed laser ranged from 31% to 61%. Overall, this setup could provide a well reference for obtaining high power narrow-linewidth fiber lasers operating within 1100-1200 nm.

Abstract:Abstract In this paper, an all-fiberized and narrow-linewidth 5 kW power-level fiber amplifier is presented. The laser is achieved based on the master oscillator power amplification configuration, in which the phase-modulated single-frequency laser is applied as the seed laser and a bidirectional pumping configuration is applied in the power amplifier. The stimulated Brillouin scattering, stimulated Raman scattering, and transverse mode instability effects are all effectively suppressed in the experiment. Consequently, the output power is scaled up to 4.92 kW with a slope efficiency of as high as approximately 80%. The 3-dB spectral width is about 0.59 nm, and the beam quality is measured to be M 2 ∼1.22 at maximum output power. Furthermore, we have also conducted a detailed spectral analysis on the spectral width of the signal laser, which reveals that the spectral wing broadening phenomenon could lead to the obvious decrease of the spectral purity at certain output power. Overall, this work could provide a reference for obtaining and optimizing high-power narrow-linewidth fiber lasers.

Abstract:To overcome Yb lasing, a kilowatt-level 1535 nm fiber laser is utilized to in-band pump an Er:Yb co-doped fiber (EYDF) amplifier. The output power of a 301 W narrow-linewidth EYDF amplifier operating at 1585 nm, with 3 dB bandwidth of 150 pm and M-2 < 1.4, is experimentally demonstrated. To the best of our knowledge, it is the highest output power achieved in L-band narrow-linewidth fiber amplifiers with good beam quality. Theoretically, a new ion transition behavior among energy levels for in-band pumping EYDF is uncovered, and a spatial-mode-resolved nonlinearity-assisted theoretical model is developed to understand its internal dynamics. Numerical simulations reveal that the reduction in slope efficiency is significantly related to excited-state absorption (ESA). ESA has a nonlinear hindering effect on power scaling. It can drastically lower the pump absorption and slope efficiency with increasing pump power for in-band pumped EYDF amplifiers. Meanwhile, optimized approaches are proposed to improve its power to the kilowatt level via in-band pumping.

Abstract:In this manuscript, a narrow linewidth fiber amplifier based on confined-doped fiber is established, and the power scaling and beam quality maintaining capabilities of this amplifier are investigated. Benefitted from the large mode area of the confined-doped fiber and precisely controlling the Yb-doped region in the fiber core, the stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) and transverse mode instability (TMI) effects are effectively balanced. As a result, a 1007 W signal laser with just 1.28 GHz linewidth is obtained by combining the advantages of confined-doped fiber, near-rectangular spectral injection, and 915 nm pump manner. As far as we know, this result is the first beyond kilowatt-level demonstration of all-fiber lasers with GHz-level linewidth, which could provide a well reference for simultaneously controlling spectral linewidth, suppressing the SBS and TMI effects in high-power, narrow-linewidth fiber lasers.

Abstract:In this work, a single-frequency fiber amplifier with output power of 703 W was demonstrated at 1,064.4 nm in an all-fiber configuration. Cascaded Yb 3+ -doped fiber structure with different dopant concentration and hybrid 915/976 nm pump scheme were employed in power scaling stage to improve the gain saturation for higher transverse mode instability threshold. An overall optical efficiency of 67.5% was achieved at the maximum output power and the M 2 was measured to be ∼1.4. A spectral linewidth of 2 kHz was obtained from the 703-W single-frequency laser. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that a single-frequency all-fiber amplifier with kHz-level spectral linewidth is achieved at such high output power.

Abstract:A theoretical model is established to simulate the stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) effect in fiber amplifiers using white noise signal (WNS) phase-modulated seed. Based on the theoretical model, the influences of amplifier structure and cut-off frequency of WNS on SBS threshold are discussed in detail. Through theoretical analysis, optimized amplifier structure and phase modulation signal are achieved to suppress SBS, and a fiber laser based on a main oscillator power amplifier with counter-pumped scheme is established. The oscillator, with 3 dB spectral linewidth of 48 GHz, is produced by a WNS phase-modulated single-frequency seed. The amplifier uses a 915 nm diode laser pump and 25/400 Yb-doped optical fiber. The output power reaches 3.02 kW at 1064 nm, with 3 dB root-mean-square linewidth of 48 GHz. Amplified quality is obtained with M, M at maximum power.

Abstract:Hundreds of picosecond pulses amplifier based on Yb-doped tapered fiber can serve as the primary power amplifier stage for an all-fiber and polarization-maintained picosecond pulse laser system. Here, we report a high-power narrow-linewidth amplifier stage by using the Yb-doped tapered fiber. In the regime, we have demonstrated amplification of 201.4 ps pulses centered at 1031.4 nm with a spectral width of 0.54 nm to 105 W average power at a repetition rate of 29.3 MHz. The picosecond pulses had a high beam quality with a measured M2 value of 1.36 ∼ 1.51, and the optical-to-optical conversion efficiency reached 56 %. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of a high-power amplifier based on Yb-doped tapered fiber, capable of amplifying hundreds of picosecond pulses beyond the hectowatt-level average power, while maintaining high beam quality. This achievement highlights the immense potential of Yb-doped tapered fiber in the field of picosecond pulse power amplification. At last, we have refined the model for the transmission and amplification of picosecond pulses in Yb-doped tapered optical fibers, thereby enhancing simulation accuracy by 8 % and providing valuable references for the in-depth research of tapered fiber pulse amplifiers.

Abstract:In this letter, a narrow line-width ytterbium-doped fiber ring laser with a fiber Bragg grating inside the cavity is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. In order to realize single longitudinal mode (SLM) output, an un-pumped ytterbium-doped fiber is used as an SLM selector. First, the effect of the coupler output ratio on the output power and the threshold power is discussed in this proposed laser, and the coupler output ratio of 30% is adopted at last. Furthermore, the spectrum and frequency spectra are analyzed to obtain the line width and frequency stability. Finally, the output power with fluctuation in half an hour is measured to evaluate the power stability. The results show that the output power of 7 mW, signal-to-noise ratio greater than 65 dB at 1069 nm, line width less than 500 Hz, and power stability below 1.5% can be achieved for the laser.

Abstract:We demonstrate an all-fiber high-power narrow-linewidth fiber laser based on a homemade tapered Yb-doped fiber (T-YDF). The laser performance is investigated and systematically compared with different seed powers and pump manners. The experimental results reveal that the injected seed power requires a trade-off designed to take into account the impact of spectral broadening, nonlinear effects, and transverse mode instability (TMI). Compared with the co-pump manner, the counter-pump manner performs well in inhibiting nonlinearities, spectral broadening, and improving the TMI threshold. Under the counter-pump manner, this narrow-linewidth T-YDF amplifier realized a 2.09 kW output power with a 3 dB spectral linewidth of ∼0.34 nm, a beam quality of M<sup>2</sup>∼1.28 and a high Raman suppression ratio over 53.5 dB, the highest reported power for such a T-YDF-based narrow-linewidth single-mode laser, to the best of our knowledge. This work provides a promising pathway towards implementing monolithic high-power narrow-linewidth single-mode fiber lasers.

Abstract:To achieve a high spectral purity Raman laser in a wide range of pump power, we propose the adjustable Raman threshold method and experimentally demonstrate a 6.85 kW ytterbium-Raman (Yb-Raman) fiber amplifier in this paper. The Raman threshold is adjusted to coordinate with pump power level via manipulating the Raman proportion from the master oscillator. The spectral purity of Raman laser at 1120 nm reaches 86.0 $\%$ at the highest output power and keeps over 65 $\%$ throughout. And the 3 dB bandwidth is maintained within 2.5 nm. The system shows potential in further power scaling-up because the four-wave-mixing-induced high-order Raman noise is circumvented by designing wavelengths of the seeders. This work not only reports the highest output power of the Yb-Raman fiber lasers (to the best of our knowledge), but also provides an approach to achieve an agile lasing threshold in the Yb-Raman fiber amplifiers without any structural adjustments. The Yb-Raman fiber amplifiers with high spectral purity over a broad range of power will have promising applications in communications, industry and scientific researches.

Abstract:We demonstrate a high repetition rate, high average power narrow-linewidth fiber amplifier at 1.55 μm eye-safe waveband by using a very-large-mode-area active fiber doping Er and Yb, having a 60-μm-diameter core and a 600-μm-diameter inner cladding. A maximum average power reaches 16 W at a 10 kHz repetition rate for 600 ns pulses in the stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) free operation, which calculates to a 1.6 mJ pulse energy and 2.7 kW peak power. In addition, the peak power rises to 4.9 kW with 148 ns pulses at the onset of SBS. The signal peak is located at 1,551.15 nm with a 36 dB signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). In order to eliminate the pulse steepening, the pulse shaping technology using a triangular-like wave with a slower rising edge is applied on the input pulses. The half-width of the frequency-intensity spectrum from high-average-power fiber amplifier is about 1.02 MHz, approaching the Fourier transform limit.

Abstract:In this fast track communication, we realized a high energy and peak power broadband (Δλ = 10 nm) all-fiber Yb fiber amplifier chain for the generation of pulses at a wavelength near 1.064 μm, which can possibly be applied in high peak power systems such as high power fiber-laser-driven extreme-ultraviolet lithography or fiber-based inertial confinement fusion (ICF). This system is capable of yielding 31 mJ, 12 ns pulses with peak power above a megawatt at a repetition rate of 20 Hz. Also, to make this system more applicable, a large mode combiner is made to realize an all-fiber structure. Since the system is operated at a low repetition rate, in order to suppress the ASE built between pulse intervals, multi-stage pulse pump technology is applied. Amplification characteristics in the condition of different pump widths were measured.

Abstract:By amplifying the cascaded random Raman fiber laser (RRFL) oscillator and ytterbium fiber laser oscillator, we present the first, to the best of our knowledge, demonstration of a 10-kW-level high-spectral-purity all-fiber ytterbium-Raman fiber amplifier (Yb-RFA). With a carefully designed backward-pumped RRFL oscillator structure, the parasitic oscillation between the cascaded seeds is avoided. Leveraging the RRFL with full-open-cavity as the Raman seed, the Yb-RFA realizes 10.7-kW Raman lasing at 1125 nm, which is beyond the operating wavelengths of all the reflection components used in the system. The spectral purity of the Raman lasing reaches 94.7% and the 3-dB bandwidth is 3.9 nm. This work paves a way to combine the temporal stability of the RRFL seed and the power scaling of Yb-RFA, enabling the wavelength extension of high-power fiber lasers with high spectral purity.
Pure passive fiber enabled highly efficient Raman fiber amplifier with record kilowatt power

Abstract:Kilowatt-level high efficiency all-fiberized Raman fiber amplifier based on pure passive fiber is proposed for the first time in this paper. The laser system is established on master oscillator power amplification configuration while a piece of graded-index passive fiber is utilized as stokes shifting as well as gain medium, which is entirely irrelevant to rare-earth-doped gain mechanism. When the pump power is 1368.8 W, we obtained 1002.3 W continuous-wave laser power at 1060 nm with the corresponding optical-to-optical efficiency of 84%. The beam parameter M2 improves from 9.17 of the pump laser to 5.11 of the signal laser through the amplification process, and the brightness enhancement is about 2.57 at maximum output power as a consequence of the beam clean-up process in the graded-index fiber. To the best of our knowledge, we have demonstrated the first kilowatt-level high efficiency Raman fiber amplifier based on pure passive fiber with brightness enhancement.

Abstract:We demonstrated a 414.9 W large-mode-area Er/Yb co-doped fiber amplifier with a good time-domain stability, seeded by a 1568 nm random fiber laser (RFL) seed with a half-open cavity. We believe this to be the highest output power of the RFL in a 1.5 µm band to date. At the maximum output power, the optical efficiency was 36.9% and the 3 dB linewidth was 0.69 nm. The 1535 nm fiber lasers were used as the pumping source of the main amplifier to avoid the parasitic lasing of Yb ions. The spectral linewidth broadening was suppressed during the amplification process due to the stable temporal output of the RFL seed. The M2 factor increased from 2.28 at 145.7 W to 2.83 at 280.8 W. Our research provides a robust approach for achieving high-power and high-spectral-purity RFLs in the 1.5 µm band.

Abstract:In this study, a kilowatt-level high-efficiency narrow-linewidth all-fiber Tm3+-doped continuous-wave laser operating at 1.95 μm is demonstrated. Benefitting from an advanced boost design of a two-stage main amplifier, it not only effectively manages heat dissipation resulting from the high pump-induced quantum defect but also realizes the controlled extraction of optical gain and improves the optical conversion efficiency. Finally, this laser system has realized an output power of 1018 W, a linewidth of 3.8 GHz, and a slope efficiency of 60.0% simultaneously. Moreover, a high optical signal-to-noise ratio of over 45 dB and excellent beam quality of M2 factors 1.19 are obtained. To the best of our knowledge, this represents the narrowest linewidth and highest slope efficiency achieved in a kilowatt-level Tm3+-doped fiber laser. Such a high-performance laser is ideally suited for mid-infrared generation and remote sensing applications.

Abstract:We demonstrate a broadband fiber amplifier system emitting 10nm pulses with 33mJ pulse energy at repetition rates between 1 and 20Hz. In combination with a pulse width of 10ns, a corresponding peak output power over than 3MW was achieved. This record performance was enabled by fiber with core diameter of 200μm. Furthermore, in order to suppress amplified spontaneous emission (ASE), multi-stage pulse pump technology was applied and different pumping characteristics had been measured. Finally, 15% extraction efficiency was obtained when output energy reached 33mJ. Output capability of the amplifier was not limited by SBS and ASE but the pump peak power.

Abstract:The power scaling of ytterbium-doped fiber (YDF) lasers emitting at the wavelength range of 1030 nm–1060 nm has been limited by amplified spontaneous emission (ASE), stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) effect, and transverse mode instability (TMI). These effects pose challenges in achieving a high-output power laser within the range of 1030 nm–1060 nm while maintaining a high signal-to-noise ratio. Based on a counter-pumped fiber laser amplifier utilizing our self-developed ytterbium-doped fiber, we have successfully showcased a 4.8-kW laser output at 1050 nm, accompanied by an 85.3% slope efficiency and nearly diffraction-limited beam quality. By effectively applying ASE and TMI, and controlling the Raman Stokes at ∼17 dB below the primary signal wavelength, we have achieved optimal performance at the maximum power level. This high efficiency has been attained through a pump-sharing structure combined with cost-effective, non-wavelength-stabilized 976-nm laser diodes.

Abstract:kW-level 1030 nm polarization-maintained fiber laser with narrow linewidth and near-diffraction-limited beam quality is demonstrated. Theoretical simulations based on the power balance equation are first performed to optimize the system parameters of the 1030 nm ytterbium-doped fiber laser for the maximum suppression of amplified spontaneous emission (ASE). With the optimized parameters, both the copumped and counterpumped MOPA lasers are implemented to obtain an output power of >1 kW. In both cases, the ASE suppression ratio reaches 40 dB with a 3 dB linewidth of about 0.14 nm, and the polarization extinction ratio is about 12 dB at 1 kW of output power.
