Abstract:In this paper, we present a slightly modified version of Fraïssé theory which is used in a paper by Christopher J. Eagle, Ilijas Farah, Bradd Hart, Boris Kadets, Vladyslav Kalashnyk and Martino Lupini (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1411.4066" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1411.4066">arXiv:1411.4066</a>) and another by the author (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1602.00124" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1602.00124">arXiv:1602.00124</a>). Using this version, we also show that every UHF algebra can be recognized as a Fraïssé limit of a class of C*-algebras of matrix-valued continuous functions on cubes with distinguished traces.

Su that the Jiang--Su algebra is the unique monotracial simple C*-algebra among all inductive limits of prime dimension drop algebras. We also partially recover the fact that every unital endomorphism of the Jiang--Su algebra is approximately inner.

Abstract:We define the notions of unital/counital/biunital infinitesimal anti-symmetric bialgebras and coFrobenius bialgebras and discuss their algebraic properties. We also define the notion of a graded 2D open-closed TQFT. These structures arise in Rabinowitz Floer homology, loop space homology, quantum homology, and the homology of finite dimensional manifolds. The underlying vector spaces, which are typically infinite dimensional, belong to a class of topological vector spaces known as Tate vector spaces.

Abstract:We show how the Gelfand spectrum of certain commutative operator algebras can be studied based on the theorem of Stone and von Neumann. The method presented is a natural addition to the tools of quantum spectral synthesis, which were recently used to characterize certain commutative Toeplitz algebras on the Fock space. Our method applies to this setting and also to more general abelian phase spaces. Besides characterizing Gelfand spectra of such commutative operator algebras, we also prove an extension of this result to the operator-valued case.

Abstract:We apply to operator algebra theory a monotone selection principle which apparently escaped attention (of operator algebra theorists) so far. This principle relates to the basic order theoretic characterisation of von Neumann algebras given by Kadison, and the simplified form this result takes in separable Hilbert spaces. In the separable case we need only consider increasing sequences rather than increasing nets. We apply an argument of Klaus Floret to show that, within the realm of commutativity, there exists a general monotone selection principle providing for this simplification. Thereby we obtain a valuable shortcut and a handy tool for related purposes. Actually, a more general selection principle is proved within the framework of vector lattices.

Abstract:In this note we show that the twisted convolution algebra $L^1_{\alpha,\omega}({\sf G},\mathfrak A)$ associated to a twisted action of a locally compact group ${\sf G}$ on a $C^*$-algebra $\mathfrak A$ has the following property: Every quotient by a closed two-sided ideal of finite codimension produces a semisimple algebra. We use this property, together with results of H. Dales and G. Willis, to build up on previous results of the author and produce large classes of examples of algebras with properties of automatic continuity.

Abstract:Motivated by the sharp contrast between classical and quantum physics as probability theories, in these lecture notes I introduce the basic notions of operator algebras that are relevant for the algebraic approach to quantum physics. Aspects of the representation theory of C*-algebras will be motivated and illustrated in physical terms. Particular emphasis will be given to explicit examples from the theory of quantum phase transitions, where concepts coming from strands as diverse as quantum information theory, algebraic quantum physics and statistical mechanics agreeably converge, providing a more complete picture of the physical phenomena involved.

Abstract:We adapt the classical notion of building models by games to the setting of continuous model theory. As an application, we study to what extent canonical operator algebras are enforceable models. For example, we show that the hyperfinite II$_1$ factor is an enforceable II$_1$ factor if and only if the Connes Embedding Problem has a positive solution. We also show that the set of continuous functions on the pseudoarc is an enforceable model of the theory of unital, projectionless, abelian \cstar-algebras and use this to show that it is the prime model of its theory.

On Theories of Superalgebras of Differentiable Functions

Abstract:This is the first in a series of papers laying the foundations for a differential graded approach to derived differential geometry (and other geometries in characteristic zero). In this paper, we study theories of supercommutative algebras for which infinitely differentiable functions can be evaluated on elements. Such a theory is called a super Fermat theory. Any category of superspaces and smooth functions has an associated such theory. This includes both real and complex supermanifolds, as well as algebraic superschemes. In particular, there is a super Fermat theory of C-infinity superalgebras. C-infinity superalgebras are the appropriate notion of supercommutative algebras in the world of C-infinity rings, the latter being of central importance both to synthetic differential geometry and to all existing models of derived smooth manifolds. A super Fermat theory is a natural generalization of the concept of a Fermat theory introduced by E. Dubuc and A. Kock. We show that any Fermat theory admits a canonical superization, however not every super Fermat theory arises in this way. For a fixed super Fermat theory, we go on to study a special subcategory of algebras called near-point determined algebras, and derive many of their algebraic properties.

On the continuity of intertwining operators over generalized convolution algebras

Abstract:Let ${\sf G}$ be a locally compact group, $\mathscr C\overset{q}{\to}{\sf G}$ a Fell bundle and $\mathfrak B=L^1({\sf G}\,\vert\,\mathscr C)$ the algebra of integrable cross-sections associated to the bundle. We give conditions that guarantee the automatic continuity of an intertwining operator $\theta:\mathcal X_1\to\mathcal X_2$, where $\mathcal X_1$ is a Banach $\mathfrak B$-bimodule and $\mathcal X_2$ is a weak Banach $\mathfrak B$-bimodule, in terms of the continuity ideal of $\theta$. We provide examples of algebras where this conditions are met, both in the case of derivations and algebra morphisms. In particular, we show that, if ${\sf G}$ is infinite, finitely-generated, has polynomial growth and $\alpha$ is a free (partial) action of ${\sf G}$ on the compact space $X$, then every homomorphism of $\ell^1_\alpha({\sf G},C(X))$ into a Banach algebra is automatically continuous.

Abstract:This is an introduction to the algebras $A\subset B(H)$ that the linear operators $T:H\to H$ can form, once a complex Hilbert space $H$ is given. Motivated by quantum mechanics, we are mainly interested in the von Neumann algebras, which are stable under taking adjoints, $T\to T^*$, and are weakly closed. When the algebra has a trace $tr:A\to\mathbb C$, we can think of it as being of the form $A=L^\infty(X)$, with $X$ being a quantum measured space. Of particular interest is the free case, where the center of the algebra reduces to the scalars, $Z(A)=\mathbb C$. Following von Neumann, Connes, Jones, Voiculescu and others, we discuss the basic properties of such algebras $A$, and how to do algebra, geometry, analysis and probability on the underlying quantum spaces $X$.

A survey on the model theory of tracial von Neumann algebras

Abstract:We survey the developments in the model theory of tracial von Neumann algebras that have taken place in the last fifteen years. We discuss the appropriate first-order language for axiomatizing this class as well as the subclass of II$_1$ factors. We discuss how model-theoretic ideas were used to settle a variety of questions around isomorphism of ultrapowers of tracial von Neumann algebras with respect to different ultrafilters before moving on to more model-theoretic concerns, such as theories of II$_1$ factors and existentially closed II$_1$ factors. We conclude with two recent applications of model-theoretic ideas to questions around relative commutants.

Variations on a theme of Gelfand and Naimark

Abstract:C*-algebras are widely used in mathematical physics to represent the observables of physical systems, and are sometimes taken as the starting point for rigorous formulations of quantum mechanics and classical statistical mechanics. Nevertheless, in many cases the naive choice of an algebra of observables does not admit a C*-algebra structure, and some massaging is necessary. In this paper we investigate what properties of C*-algebras carry over to more general algebras and what modifications of the Gelfand theory of normed algebras are necessary. We use category theory as a guide and, by replacing the ordinary definition of the Gelfand spectrum with a manifestly functorial definition, we succeed in generalizing the Gelfand-Naimark theorem to locally convex *-algebras. We also recall a little-known but potentially very useful generalization of the Stone-Weierstrass theorem to completely regular, Hausdorff spaces.

Correspondence theory on $p$-Fock spaces with applications to Toeplitz algebras

Abstract:We prove several results concerning the theory of Toeplitz algebras over $p$-Fock spaces using a correspondence theory of translation invariant symbol and operator spaces. The most notable results are: The full Toeplitz algebra is the norm closure of all Toeplitz operators with bounded uniformly continuous symbols. This generalizes a result obtained by J. Xia (J. Funct. Anal. 269:781-814, 2015) in the case $p = 2$, which was proven by different methods. Further, we prove that every Toeplitz algebra which has a translation invariant $C^\ast$ subalgebra of the bounded uniformly continuous functions as its set of symbols is linearly generated by Toeplitz operators with the same space of symbols.

Abstract:We axiomatize in continuous logic for metric structures σ-finite <math>W⁎</math>-probability spaces and preduals of von Neumann algebras jointly with a weak-* dense <math>C⁎</math>-algebra of its dual. This corresponds respectively to the Ocneanu ultrapower and the Groh ultrapower of (σ-finite in the first case) von Neumann algebras. We give various axiomatizability results corresponding to recent results of Ando and Haagerup including axiomatizability of <math>IIIλ</math> factors for <math>0<λ≤1</math> fixed and their preduals. We also strengthen the concrete Groh theory to an axiomatization result for preduals of von Neumann algebras in the language of tracial matrix-ordered operator spaces, a natural language for preduals of dual operator systems. We give an application to the isomorphism of ultrapowers of factors of type III and <math>II∞</math> for different ultrafilters.

Model-theoretic properties of nilpotent groups and Lie algebras

Abstract:We give a systematic study of the model theory of generic nilpotent groups and Lie algebras. We show that the Fraïssé limit of 2-nilpotent groups of exponent $p$ studied by Baudisch is 2-dependent and NSOP$_{1}$. We prove that the class of $c$-nilpotent Lie algebras over an arbitrary field, in a language with predicates for a Lazard series, is closed under free amalgamation. We show that for $2 < c$, the generic $c$-nilpotent Lie algebra over $\mathbb{F}_{p}$ is strictly NSOP$_{4}$ and $c$-dependent. Via the Lazard correspondence, we obtain the same result for $c$-nilpotent groups of exponent $p$, for an odd prime $p > c$.
