Abstract:We construct a fully faithful functor from the category of graphs to the category of fields. Using this functor, we resolve a longstanding open problem in computable model theory, by showing that for every nontrivial countable structure S, there exists a countable field F with the same essential computable-model-theoretic properties as S. Along the way, we develop a new "computable category theory," and prove that our functor and its partially-defined inverse (restricted to the categories of countable graphs and countable fields) are computable functors.

Abstract:In this paper we show that using implicative algebras one can produce models of set theory generalizing Heyting/Boolean-valued models and realizability models of (I)ZF, both in intuitionistic and classical logic. This has as consequence that any topos which is obtained from a Set-based tripos as the result of the tripos-to-topos construction hosts a model of intuitionistic or classical set theory, provided a large enough strongly inaccessible cardinal exists.

Abstract:We set the foundations of a theory of Grothendieck $(\infty,2)$-topoi based on the notion of fibrational descent, which axiomatizes both the existence of a classifying object for fibrations internal to an $(\infty,2)$-category as well as the exponentiability of these fibrations. As our main result, we prove a 2-dimensional version of Giraud's theorem which characterizes $(\infty,2)$-topoi as those $(\infty, 2)$-categories that appear as localizations of $\mathfrak{C}\!\operatorname{at}$-valued presheaves in which the localization functor preserves certain partially lax finite limits which we call oriented pullbacks. We develop the basics of a theory of partially lax Kan extensions internal to an $(\infty,2)$-topos, and we show that every $(\infty,2)$-topos admits an internal version of the Yoneda embedding. Our general formalism recovers the theory of categories internal to a $(\infty,1)$-topos (as develop by the second author and Sebastian Wolf) as a full sub-$(\infty,2)$-category of the $(\infty,2)$-category of $(\infty,2)$-topoi. As a technical ingredient, we prove general results on the theory of presentable $(\infty,2)$-categories, including lax cocompletions and 2-dimensional versions of the adjoint functor theorem, which might be of independent interest.

Fences, their endpoints, and projective Fraïssé theory

Abstract:We introduce a new class of compact metrizable spaces, which we call fences, and its subclass of smooth fences. We isolate two families $\mathcal F, \mathcal F_0$ of Hasse diagrams of finite partial orders and show that smooth fences are exactly the spaces which are approximated by projective sequences from $\mathcal F_0$. We investigate the combinatorial properties of Hasse diagrams of finite partial orders and show that $\mathcal F, \mathcal F_0$ are projective Fraïssé families with a common projective Fraïssé limit. We study this limit and characterize the smooth fence obtained as its quotient, which we call a Fraïssé fence. We show that the Fraïssé fence is a highly homogeneous space which shares several features with the Lelek fan, and we examine the structure of its spaces of endpoints. Along the way we establish some new facts in projective Fraïssé theory.

Abstract:We propose a construction of a stable category for any pretorsion theory in a lextensive category. We prove the universal property of the stable category, that extends previous results obtained for the stable category of internal preorders in a pretopos. Some examples are provided in the categories of topological spaces and of (small) categories.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a slightly modified version of Fraïssé theory which is used in a paper by Christopher J. Eagle, Ilijas Farah, Bradd Hart, Boris Kadets, Vladyslav Kalashnyk and Martino Lupini (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1411.4066" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1411.4066">arXiv:1411.4066</a>) and another by the author (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1602.00124" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1602.00124">arXiv:1602.00124</a>). Using this version, we also show that every UHF algebra can be recognized as a Fraïssé limit of a class of C*-algebras of matrix-valued continuous functions on cubes with distinguished traces.

Gluing of infinitesimal models of algebraic theories

Abstract:Categories of models of algebraic theories have good categorical properties except for gluing. Building upon insights and examples from Synthetic Differential Geometry, we introduce a generalisation of models of algebraic theories to infinitesimal models. We demonstrate that the category of infinitesimal models retains most of the good categorical properties, but with a stark improvement in the behaviour of gluing. This makes infinitesimal models an interesting natural construction with the ability to interpolate between algebra and geometry.

On local fibrations of $(\infty,2)$-categories

Abstract:In this work we provide a model-independent notion of local fibrations of $(\infty,2)$-categories which generalises the well-known theory of locally coCartesian fibrations of $(\infty,1)$-categories. Based on previous work, we construct a model category which serves as a specific combinatorial model for this type of fibrations. Our main result is a generalisation of the locally coCartesian straightening and unstraightening construction of Lurie, which yields for any scaled simplicial set $S$ an equivalence of $(\infty,2)$-categories between the $(\infty,2)$-category of $(0,1)$-fibrations over $S$ (also known as inner coCartesian fibrations) and the $(\infty,2)$-category of functors $S \to \mathbb{C}\!\operatorname{at}_{(\infty,2)}$ with values in $(\infty,2)$-categories. Given an $(\infty,2)$-category $\mathbb{B}$, our Grothendieck construction can be specialised to produce an equivalence between the $(\infty,2)$-category of local fibrations over $\mathbb{B}$ and the $(\infty,2)$-category of oplax unital functors with values in $\mathbb{C}\!\operatorname{at}_{(\infty,2)}$. Finally, as an application of our results we provide a version of the Yoneda lemma for $(\infty,2)$-categories.

Generic Compacta from Relations between Finite Graphs: Theory Building and Examples

Abstract:In recent work, the authors developed a simple method of constructing topological spaces from certain well-behaved partially ordered sets -- those coming from sequences of relations between finite sets. This method associates a given poset with its spectrum, which is a compact T_1 topological space. In this paper, we focus on the case where such finite sets have a graph structure and the relations belong to a given graph category. We relate topological properties of the spectrum to combinatorial properties of the graph categories involved. We then utilise this to exhibit elementary combinatorial constructions of well-known continua as Fraïssé limits of finite graphs in categories with relational morphisms.

Abstract:Galois categories can be viewed as the combinatorial analog of Tannakian categories. We introduce the notion of pre-Galois category, which can be viewed as the combinatorial analog of pre-Tannakian categories. Given an oligomorphic group $G$, the category $\mathbf{S}(G)$ of finitary smooth $G$-sets is pre-Galois. Our main theorem (approximately) says that these examples are exhaustive; this result is, in a sense, a reformulation of Fraïssé's theorem. We also introduce a more general class of B-categories, and give some examples of B-categories that are not pre-Galois using permutation classes. This work is motivated by certain applications to pre-Tannakian categories.

It turns out that can be described as the nerve of the classifier for discrete fibrations in , where the nerve functor is right adjoint to the so-called "Grothendieck construction" taking a presheaf to its category of elements . We also consider change of base for such universes, as well as universes of structured families, such as fibrations.

Abstract:This is the first part of a project aimed at formalizing Rozansky-Witten models in the functorial field theory framework. Motivated by work of Calaque-Haugseng-Scheimbauer, we construct a family of symmetric monoidal $(\infty,3)$-categories parametrized by an $\infty$-category with finite limits and a functor into symmetric monoidal $\infty$-categories, such that the functor admits pushforwards. This $(\infty,3)$-category contains correspondences in the base $\infty$-category equipped with local systems, which compose via a push-pull formula. We apply this general construction to provide an approximation to the $3$-category of Rozansky-Witten models whose existence was conjectured by Kapustin-Rozansky-Saulina; this approximation behaves like a "commutative" version of the conjectured $3$-category and is related to work of Stefanich on higher quasicoherent sheaves.

Functorial Approach to Graph and Hypergraph Theory

Abstract:We provide a new approach to categorical graph and hypergraph theory by using categorical syntax and semantics. For each monoid $M$ and action on a set $X$, there is an associated presheaf topos of $(X,M)$-graphs where each object can be interpreted as a generalized uniform hypergraph where each edge has cardinality $\#X$ incident vertices (including multiplicity) and where the monoid informs what type of cohesivity the edges possess. One distinguishing feature of $(X,M)$-graphs is the presence of unfixed edges. We prove that unfixed edges are a necessary feature of a category of graphs or uniform hypergraphs if one wants exponentials and effective equivalence relations to exist in the category. The main advantage of separating syntax (the $(X,M)$-graph theories) from semantics (the categories of $(X,M)$-graphs) is the ability to interpret the theory in any cocomplete category. This interpetation functor then yields a nerve-realization adjunction and allows us to transfer structure between the category of $(X,M)$-graphs and the receptive cocomplete category.

Abstract:Grothendieck toposes, and by extension, logical theories, can be represented by topological structures. Butz and Moerdijk showed that every topos with enough points can be represented as the topos of sheaves on an open topological groupoid. This paper tackles a follow-up question: we characterise, in model-theoretic terms, which open topological groupoids can represent the classifying topos of a theory. Intuitively, this characterises which groupoids of models contain enough information to reconstruct the theory. Our treatment subsumes many of the previous approaches found in the literature, such as that of Awodey, Forssell, Butz and Moerdijk.

Abstract:The category of compact Hausdorff locales is a pretopos which is filtral, meaning that every object is covered by one whose subobject lattice is isomorphic to the lattice of filters of complemented elements. We show that any filtral pretopos satisfying some mild additional conditions can be embedded into the category of compact Hausdorff locales. This result is valid in the internal logic of any topos. Assuming the principle of weak excluded middle and the existence of copowers of the terminal object in the pretopos, the image of the embedding contains all spatial compact Hausdorff locales. The notion of filtrality was introduced by V. Marra and L. Reggio (Theory Appl. Categ., 2020) to characterise the category of compact Hausdorff spaces within the class of pretoposes. Our results can be regarded as a constructive extension of the aforementioned characterisation, avoiding reference to points. If the ambient logic is classical, i.e. it satisfies excluded middle, and the prime ideal theorem for Boolean algebras holds, we obtain as a corollary the characterisation of compact Hausdorff spaces in op. cit.
