Abstract:This paper solves the first problem of the open problems in topos theory posted by William Lawvere, which asks the existence of a Grothendieck topos that has a proper class many quotient topoi. This paper concretely constructs such Grothendieck topoi, including the presheaf topos of the free monoid generated by countably infinite elements $\mathbf{PSh}(M_\omega)$. Utilizing the combinatorics of the classifying topos of the theory of inhabited objects and considering pairing functions, the problem is reduced to making rigid relational structures. This is accomplished by using Kunen's theorem on elementary embeddings in set theory.

Finite model theory for pseudovarieties and universal algebra: preservation, definability and complexity

Abstract:We explore new interactions between finite model theory and a number of classical streams of universal algebra and semigroup theory. A key result is an example of a finite algebra whose variety is not finitely axiomatisable in first order logic, but which has first order definable finite membership problem. This algebra witnesses the simultaneous failure of the Łos-Tarski Theorem, the SP-preservation theorem and Birkhoff's HSP-preservation theorem at the finite level as well as providing a negative solution to a first order formulation of the long-standing Eilenberg Schützenberger problem. The example also shows that a pseudovariety without any finite pseudo-identity basis may be finitely axiomatisable in first order logic. Other results include the undecidability of deciding first order definability of the pseudovariety of a finite algebra and a mapping from any fixed template constraint satisfaction problem to a first order equivalent variety membership problem, thereby providing examples of variety membership problems complete in each of the classes $\texttt{L}$, $\texttt{NL}$, $\texttt{Mod}_p(\texttt{L})$, $\texttt{P}$, and infinitely many others (depending on complexity-theoretic assumptions).

Abstract:We provide graded extensions of algebraic theories and Lawvere theories that correspond to graded monads. We prove that graded algebraic theories, graded Lawvere theories, and finitary graded monads are equivalent via equivalence of categories, which extends the equivalence for monads. We also give sums and tensor products of graded algebraic theories to combine computational effects as an example of importing techniques based on algebraic theories to graded monads.

Abstract:The paper deals with the theoretical investigation of intrasubband plasmons in an array of quantum wires, consisting of a finite number of quantum wires, arranged at an equal distance from each other and placed into an external magnetic field. Two types of quantum wire array are under consideration: an ordered array of quantum wires with equal electron densities in all quantum wires and weakly disordered array of quantum wires, which is characterized by the fact that the density of electrons of one defect quantum wire was different from that of other quantum wires. For the ordered array of quantum wires, placed into the external magnetic field, the nonmonotonical dependence of plasmon frequency upon the 1D density of electrons in quantum wires is predicted. For high magnetic field the existence of 1D electron density ranges, in which plasmon modes do not exist, is shown. For the weakly disordered array of quantum wires the existence of the local plasmon modes, which properties differ from those of usual modes, is found. At high magnetic field the disappearance of the local plasmon modes at certain ranges of 1D electron density in defect quantum wire is shown.

Some simple theories from a Boolean algebra point of view

Abstract:We find a strong separation between two natural families of simple rank one theories in Keisler's order: the theories $T_\mathfrak{m}$ reflecting graph sequences, which witness that Keisler's order has the maximum number of classes, and the theories $T_{n,k}$, which are the higher-order analogues of the triangle-free random graph. The proof involves building Boolean algebras and ultrafilters "by hand" to satisfy certain model theoretically meaningful chain conditions. This may be seen as advancing a line of work going back through Kunen's construction of good ultrafilters in ZFC using families of independent functions. We conclude with a theorem on flexible ultrafilters, and open questions.

Abstract:We study various characterizations of higher sites over a given $\infty$-category $\mathcal{C}$ which are conceptually in line with their classical ordinary categorical counterparts, and extract some new results about $\infty$-topos theory from them. First, in terms of formal $(\infty,2)$-category theory, we define a notion of higher Lawvere-Tierney operators on $\infty$-toposes which internalizes a parametrized version of the left exact modalities of Anel, Biedermann, Finster and Joyal and the left exact modalities of Rijke, Shulman and Spitters. Second, in the spirit of Lawvere's hyperdoctrines, we describe the $\infty$-toposes embedded in the $\infty$-category $\hat{\mathcal{C}}$ of presheaves over $\mathcal{C}$ as the sheaves of ideals of what we call the logical structure sheaf on $\mathcal{C}$. This naturally induces a notion of ''geometric kernels'' on $\mathcal{C}$ which play the part of higher Grothendieck topologies from the given perspective. Lastly, we study the $\infty$-category of cartesian $(\infty,1)$-sites. We generalize the notion of canonical Grothendieck topologies from Lurie's book appropriately to all geometric kernels and show an according ''Comparison Lemma'' in the best case scenario. However, we show that a corresponding topological version of the lemma in the context of Grothendieck topologies fails.

On topological groupoids that represent theories

Abstract:Grothendieck toposes, and by extension, logical theories, can be represented by topological structures. Butz and Moerdijk showed that every topos with enough points can be represented as the topos of sheaves on an open topological groupoid. This paper tackles a follow-up question: we characterise, in model-theoretic terms, which open topological groupoids can represent the classifying topos of a theory. Intuitively, this characterises which groupoids of models contain enough information to reconstruct the theory. Our treatment subsumes many of the previous approaches found in the literature, such as that of Awodey, Forssell, Butz and Moerdijk.

Propositional Logics for the Lawvere Quantale

Abstract:Lawvere showed that generalised metric spaces are categories enriched over $[0, \infty]$, the quantale of the positive extended reals. The statement of enrichment is a quantitative analogue of being a preorder. Towards seeking a logic for quantitative metric reasoning, we investigate three $[0,\infty]$-valued propositional logics over the Lawvere quantale. The basic logical connectives shared by all three logics are those that can be interpreted in any quantale, viz finite conjunctions and disjunctions, tensor (addition for the Lawvere quantale) and linear implication (here a truncated subtraction); to these we add, in turn, the constant $1$ to express integer values, and scalar multiplication by a non-negative real to express general affine combinations. Quantitative equational logic can be interpreted in the third logic if we allow inference systems instead of axiomatic systems. For each of these logics we develop a natural deduction system which we prove to be decidably complete w.r.t. the quantale-valued semantics. The heart of the completeness proof makes use of the Motzkin transposition theorem. Consistency is also decidable; the proof makes use of Fourier-Motzkin elimination of linear inequalities. Strong completeness does not hold in general, even (as is known) for theories over finitely-many propositional variables; indeed even an approximate form of strong completeness in the sense of Pavelka or Ben Yaacov -- provability up to arbitrary precision -- does not hold. However, we can show it for theories axiomatized by a (not necessarily finite) set of judgements in normal form over a finite set of propositional variables when we restrict to models that do not map variables to $\infty$; the proof uses Hurwicz's general form of the Farkas' Lemma.

An algebraic theory for logarithmic Kazhdan-Lusztig correspondences

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{U}$ be a braided tensor category, typically unknown, complicated and in particular non-semisimple. We characterize $\mathcal{U}$ under the assumption that there exists a commutative algebra $A$ in $\mathcal{U}$ with certain properties: Let $\mathcal{C}$ be the category of local $A$-modules in $\mathcal{U}$ and $\mathcal{B}$ the category of $A$-modules in $\mathcal{U}$, which are in our set-up usually much simpler categories than $\mathcal{U}$. Then we can characterize $\mathcal{U}$ as a relative Drinfeld center $\mathcal{Z}_\mathcal{C}(\mathcal{B})$ and $\mathcal{B}$ as representations of a certain Hopf algebra inside $\mathcal{C}$. In particular this allows us to reduce braided tensor equivalences to the knowledge of abelian equivalences, e.g. if we already know that $\mathcal{U}$ is abelian equivalent to the category of modules of some quantum group $U_q$ or some generalization thereof, and if $\mathcal{C}$ is braided equivalent to a category of graded vector spaces, and if $A$ has a certain form, then we already obtain a braided tensor equivalence between $\mathcal{U}$ and $\mathrm{Rep}(U_q)$. A main application of our theory is to prove logarithmic Kazhdan-Lusztig correspondences, that is, equivalences of braided tensor categories of representations of vertex algebras and of quantum groups. Here, the algebra $A$ and the corresponding category $\mathcal{C}$ are a-priori given by a free-field realization of the vertex algebra and by a Nichols algebra. We illustrate this in those examples where the representation theory of the vertex algebra is well enough understood. In particular we prove the conjectured correspondences between the singlet vertex algebra $\mathcal{M}(p)$ and the unrolled small quantum groups of $\mathfrak{sl}_2$ at $2p$-th root of unity. Another new example is the Kazhdan-Lusztig correspondence for $\mathfrak{gl}_{1|1}$.

Categorified Open Topological Field Theories

Abstract:In this short note, we classify linear categorified open topological field theories in dimension two by pivotal Grothendieck-Verdier categories. In combination with recently developed string-net techniques, this leads to a new description of the spaces of conformal blocks of Drinfeld centers $Z(\mathcal{C})$ of pivotal finite tensor categories $\mathcal{C}$ in terms of the modular envelope of the cyclic associative operad. If $\mathcal{C}$ is unimodular, we prove that the space of conformal blocks inherits the structure of a module over the algebra of class functions of $\mathcal{C}$ for every free boundary component. As a further application, we prove that the sewing along a boundary circle for the modular functor for $Z(\mathcal{C})$ can be decomposed into a sewing procedure along an interval and the application of the partial trace. Finally, we construct mapping class group representations from Grothendieck-Verdier categories that are not necessarily rigid and make precise how these generalize existing constructions.

On the enumeration of finite $L$-algebras

Abstract:We use Constraint Satisfaction Methods to construct and enumerate finite $L$-algebras up to isomorphism. These objects were recently introduced by Rump and appear in Garside theory, algebraic logic, and the study of the combinatorial Yang-Baxter equation. There are 377322225 isomorphism classes of $L$-algebras of size eight. The database constructed suggest the existence of bijections between certain classes of $L$-algebras and well-known combinatorial objects. On the one hand, we prove that Bell numbers enumerate isomorphism classes of finite linear $L$-algebras. On the other hand, we also prove that finite regular $L$-algebras are in bijective correspondence with infinite-dimensional Young diagrams.

Abstract:Lawvere's algebraic theories, or Lawvere theories, underpin a categorical approach to general algebra, and Lawvere's adjunction between semantics and algebraic structure leads to an equivalence between Lawvere theories and finitary monads on the category of sets. Several authors have transported these ideas to a variety of settings, including contexts of category theory enriched in a symmetric monoidal closed category. In this paper, we develop a general axiomatic framework for enriched structure-semantics adjunctions and monad-theory equivalences for subcategories of arities. Not only do we establish a simultaneous generalization of the monad-theory equivalences previously developed in the settings of Lawvere (1963), Linton (1966), Dubuc (1970), Borceux-Day (1980), Power (1999), Nishizawa-Power (2009), Lack-Rosický (2011), Lucyshyn-Wright (2016), and Bourke-Garner (2019), but also we establish a structure-semantics theorem that generalizes those given in the first four of these works while applying also to the remaining five, for which such a result has not previously been developed. Furthermore, we employ our axiomatic framework to establish broad new classes of examples of enriched monad-theory equivalences and structure-semantics adjunctions for subcategories of arities enriched in locally bounded closed categories, including various convenient closed categories that are relevant in topology and analysis and need not be locally presentable.

Abstract:In various subjects including mathematics, one can hope to use mathematical thinking well when the right kinds of algebraic structure to consider can be discovered or spotted. Therefore, it would help to understand kinds of algebraic structure in some great generality. In tradition, certain general kinds of algebraic structure are studied through the theory of operads, of algebraic theories, of properads (possibly with "colours" or "sorts") or of the like. We understand this as use of algebra for studying a certain meta aspect of the subject of algebra, namely, studying kinds of algebraic structure in general (rather than structures of specific kinds themselves). In higher categorical contexts, more various algebraic structures can be considered (starting in fact with operads considered with arbitrarily varying colours) than can be covered with mere higher categorified versions of the traditional tools. In this survey, we develop a systematic view on quite general algebraic structures with high categorical dimensionality. We do this by extending algebra for the meta aspect of algebra, to a higher order, or highly meta, theory of algebra, where the theoretic order turns out to match the categorical dimension. We will discuss some examples including a natural generalization of the notion of topological field theory (TFT) obtained in the resulting new system. It turns out a generalized TFT can have a very different characterization from a conventional TFT does.

Abstract:Simplicial sets generalize many categories of graphs. In this paper, we give a complete characterization of the Lawvere-Tierney topologies on (semi-)simplicial sets, on bicolored graphs, and on fuzzy sets. We apply our results to establish that 'partially simple' simplicial sets and 'partially simple' graphs form quasitoposes.

Abstract:We define a class of monoidal categories whose morphisms are diagrams, and which are enhancements and generalisations of the Brauer category obtained by adjoining infinitesimal braids, "coupons" and poles. Properties of these categories are explored, particularly diagrammatic equations. We construct functors from certain of them to categories of representations of Lie algebras and superalgebras. Applications include a diagrammatic construction of the centre of the universal enveloping superalgebra and certain "characteristic identities", as well as an analysis of certain tensor representations. We show how classical diagram categories arising in invariant theory are special cases of our constructions, placing them in a single unified framework.

Fibered Universal Algebra for First-Order Logics

Abstract:We extend Lawvere-Pitts prop-categories (aka. hyperdoctrines) to develop a general framework for providing "algebraic" semantics for nonclassical first-order logics. This framework includes a natural notion of substitution, which allows first-order logics to be considered as structural closure operators just as propositional logics are in abstract algebraic logic. We then establish an extension of the homomorphism theorem from universal algebra for generalized prop-categories and characterize two natural closure operators on the prop-categorical semantics. The first closes a class of structures (which are interpreted as morphisms of prop-categories) under the satisfaction of their common first-order theory and the second closes a class of prop-categories under their associated first-order consequence. It turns out these closure operators have characterizations that closely mirror Birkhoff's characterization of the closure of a class of algebras under the satisfaction of their common equational theory and Blok and Jónsson's characterization of closure under equational consequence, respectively. These "algebraic" characterizations of the first-order closure operators are unique to the prop-categorical semantics and do not have analogs, for example, in the Tarskian semantics for classical first-order logic. The prop-categories we consider are much more general than traditional intuitionistic prop-categories or triposes (i.e., topos representing indexed partially ordered sets). Nonetheless, to our knowledge, our results are still new even when restricted to these special classes of prop-categories.

Abstract:An algebraic theory, sometimes called an equational theory, is a theory defined by finitary operations and equations, such as the theories of groups and of rings. It is well known that algebraic theories are equivalent to finitary monads on $\mathbf{Set}$. In this paper, we generalize this phenomenon to locally finitely presentable categories using partial Horn logic. For each locally finitely presentable category $\mathscr{A}$, we define an "algebraic concept" relative to $\mathscr{A}$, which will be called an $\mathscr{A}$-relative algebraic theory, and show that $\mathscr{A}$-relative algebraic theories are equivalent to finitary monads on $\mathscr{A}$. In establishing such equivalence, a generalized Birkhoff's variety theorem plays an important role.
