Abstract:Lawvere showed that generalised metric spaces are categories enriched over $[0, \infty]$, the quantale of the positive extended reals. The statement of enrichment is a quantitative analogue of being a preorder. Towards seeking a logic for quantitative metric reasoning, we investigate three $[0,\infty]$-valued propositional logics over the Lawvere quantale. The basic logical connectives shared by all three logics are those that can be interpreted in any quantale, viz finite conjunctions and disjunctions, tensor (addition for the Lawvere quantale) and linear implication (here a truncated subtraction); to these we add, in turn, the constant $1$ to express integer values, and scalar multiplication by a non-negative real to express general affine combinations. Quantitative equational logic can be interpreted in the third logic if we allow inference systems instead of axiomatic systems. For each of these logics we develop a natural deduction system which we prove to be decidably complete w.r.t. the quantale-valued semantics. The heart of the completeness proof makes use of the Motzkin transposition theorem. Consistency is also decidable; the proof makes use of Fourier-Motzkin elimination of linear inequalities. Strong completeness does not hold in general, even (as is known) for theories over finitely-many propositional variables; indeed even an approximate form of strong completeness in the sense of Pavelka or Ben Yaacov -- provability up to arbitrary precision -- does not hold. However, we can show it for theories axiomatized by a (not necessarily finite) set of judgements in normal form over a finite set of propositional variables when we restrict to models that do not map variables to $\infty$; the proof uses Hurwicz's general form of the Farkas' Lemma.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
### What problems does this paper attempt to solve? This paper aims to explore and solve the propositional logic problems related to Lawvere quantale algebras, especially to establish an appropriate logical framework for quantitative metric reasoning. Specifically: 1. **Introducing propositional logic based on Lawvere quantale algebras**: - Lawvere showed that generalized metric spaces can be regarded as categories enriched over \([0, \infty]\), where \([0, \infty]\) is the quantale algebra of positive extended real numbers. - The authors proposed three \([0, \infty]\)-valued propositional logics on Lawvere quantale algebras. These logics share some basic logical connectives (such as finite conjunctions, disjunctions, tensors, and linear implications) and gradually add constants expressing integer values and scalar multiplications of non - negative real numbers. 2. **Developing natural deduction systems**: - For each logic, the author developed a set of natural deduction systems and proved its decidable completeness with respect to the quantale - algebra semantics. The core of the completeness proof uses the Motzkin transposition theorem. 3. **Analysis of the properties of logical systems**: - The consistency and decidability of these logical systems are discussed. The consistency is also decidable, and the elimination method of Fourier - Motzkin inequalities is used in the proof. - Strong completeness usually does not hold, even for theories with a finite number of propositional variables. However, for axiomatic theories in a specific form, strong completeness can be proved under certain restrictions. 4. **Applications and significance**: - These logics are variants of \([0, 1]\)-valued logics, transformed by the exponential mapping \(e^{-x}\). The first logic is equivalent to Goguen's product logic, the second logic is a version of the product logic with a fixed constant selection, and the third logic adds exponential operations. - The third logic is natural in the additive context but not in the multiplicative context, because multiplying by a constant becomes an exponential operation. 5. **Innovation in proof methods**: - The authors' proof methods are novel, making use of results in linear algebra, such as Farkas' lemma and its related results, which are usually regarded as some kind of completeness results. This paper puts this view into practice to prove general completeness. In summary, this paper attempts to solve the logical foundation problems in quantitative metric reasoning by constructing and studying propositional logics based on Lawvere quantale algebras, and provides a complete natural deduction system and theoretical analysis for such logics.
